Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Iodine There are many different vitamins and minerals that need to be present in your horses diet in order for your horse to be healthy and happy. Although before they were domesticated, grazing was enough, simply feeding your horse hay and grass is generally not adequate, as our horses now carry us on their back, are worked differently and are restricted to much smaller areas than they would naturally be in! So this month, I thought I would talk about one of the important nutrients that needs to be a part of your horses diet - iodine - as well as some common misconceptions about how you can supplement vitamins and minerals such as iodine in your horses diet.
Why Do Horses Need Iodine? Iodine is an important trace mineral in every horses diets, as it aids in the synthesis of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. The thyroid hormones that it aids to produce are responsible to telling all the other glands making up the endocrine system what to do. Therefore, iodine is an essential nutrient for normal physiological function in the horse! In adult horses, the thyroid hormones are necessary for reproduction, as they help to control: • Normal oestrus cycles in mares • Development and survival of the foetus • Growth of foals after birth
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine May 2014
Requirements for Iodine So now that you know that iodine is so important for your horse, how much iodine is needed in a horses diet? Although it is not an ironclad figure, generally your horse needs around 0.1mg/ kg of diet. Even though this only works out to be 1-2mg of iodine per day for a 500kg horse, it is important that your horse has enough. However, having said that, toxic levels for your horse are at around 5mg/kg feed per day, so there really isn’t a whole lot of room for error!! :)
Utilisation of Iodine As mentioned above, iodine is important for thyroid function - 75% of the body’s iodine is found here. It is also important for reproduction, and is taken up by the mammary gland (so that it can be distributed into the milk for the foal. The other place it is commonly found is the placenta - again for the benefit of the foal.
6
Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Iodine DEFICIENCIES AND EXCESS
It is important to note that pregnant and lactating mares are particularly at risk of iodine toxicity.
So now that you know how much iodine your horse needs, what happens if he doesn’t get enough, or is being given too much?
In part this is due to the fact that iodine is concentrated across the placenta and in the mammary glands.
With both deficiencies and excess of iodine in your horses diet, there are similar symptoms.
Symptoms Feeding the wrong amount of iodine in your young horses diet is the primary cause of goitre in foals (less common in adult horses). This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and can cause a number of other symptoms! In foals these symptoms may be: • Slowed skeletal growth •
Rough coat
• Delayed shedding of hair • Muscular weakness The mothers of these foals may or may not also exhibit hair loss and an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre).
Deficiencies and excesses of iodine can cause goitre in foals (check out the lump on the neck of this foal)
Causes Of course the main cause of this occurrence is either over or underfeeding iodine by humans in the diet of your horse!!! There are also certain plants that horses may consume that interfere with iodine uptake by the body of the horse, and hence and thyroid function. These include: • Kale • Cabbage • Brassica • Lupins
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine May 2014
Although the mare may not show obvious signs of the toxicity, the foal may be born dead or with an iodine toxicity.
Effects Deficiencies and excess can cause hypothyroidism (this is where the thyroid gland is functioning on a much smaller scale than normal), which results in the hypertrophy (increase in the tissue mass) of the thyroid gland - this is where a goitre is formed. If there is a deficiency, not enough iodine is available for thyroid hormone production, and if there is an excess, this inhibits thyroid hormone release therefore not enough thyroid hormone is being produced!
7
Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Iodine Diagnosis
of these vitamins minerals in seaweed is very, very low (so there is not much point in feeding it to your horse) and iodine generally waaaay too high!!
As you can imagine, because both excess and deficiency show the same signs, diagnosis needs to be carefully made - you might know that your horse has an iodine problem, but you might not know in which direction! Therefore, to determine the problem you need to evaluate the diet and determine how much iodine the horse is actually getting. Unfortunately, a blood analysis is not particularly useful, as iodine is not really carried around in the blood - it is concentrated in the thyroid gland.
If there are levels that are too high in the diet, then any iodine supplementation you are already giving need to be reduced or ceased, and if you are not giving an iodine supplement that you know of, your horses diet may need to be reevaluated or changed.
SEAWEED MEAL
Treatment The most important factor in treating an iodine deficiency or toxicity is to correct the dietary imbalance - it is important to determine whether your horse is consuming too much or too little iodine. If your horse has a deficiency, it is easy to add more iodine, such as in the form of iodized salt.
Is it a Good Supplement?
The iodine levels in seaweed are highly variable. For example, the concentration of iodine in 12 different seaweeds was tested, and varied from 16mg/kg to 8165mg/kg If you were to feed the seaweed meal produced from these seaweeds, this is around 81.65mg for a 500kg horse being fed 2% body weight dry matter – toxic levels!!
Seaweed meal is a “natural” vitamin and mineral supplement that is promoted as containing every nutrient needed by the horse, including: • 48 minerals • 16 amino acids • 11 vitamins This might be true, however generally the concentration

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Iodine Before Feeding Seaweed and Other Iodine Supplements
• It is essential for normal function of the thyroid gland
So what we really need to consider if you are thinking about feeding a seaweed meal is why you want to feed it. If you do end up deciding that you want to feed it - make sure any product bought has a full iodine (and other mineral) analysis, so that you know exactly how much to give your horse, so that you can make sure they are not getting toxic levels of iodine. Never give free access to seaweed meal – this is just an iodine toxicity waiting to happen!
• Deficiency and toxic levels cause similar symptoms
Is It Necessary to Supplement with Iodine? Evaluate your horses diet if he is deficient in iodine, this is when you can consider supplementation, however you need to be very careful not to oversupplement
• Seaweed meal is generally too high in iodine to be of any use • It is crucial to evaluate your horses diet before supplementation of iodine Many types of commercially available feeds contain enough iodine for your horses everyday needs – always look at the label!!!
If you have any questions about feeding your horse in the summer months, make sure you email me at info@ebonyparkstud.com.a u

Tash’s Training Tip - Why Do We Say “No” to Ourselves? You know when you set the alarm clock at 6am to get up and ….. you don’t. When you say you will ride after work and ….. you don’t.
Since the birth of my gorgeous baby girl, I have been thinking a lot about my health and fitness getting myself back to my pre-baby body, so that I can take my riding above and beyond what I have already done with Abe and the other horses.
When you use the weather, the day, the life challenges in the way, to mean when you should ride ….. you don’t. And that means you don’t get to ride as often as you would like. You don’t get to compete as often as you like.
you love and what you are prepared to do. People say to me I would love to ride like you – ok then get up, every day ride four horses a day for the next 15 years and you can ride like me. My husband plays exquisite piano – people say I would love to be able to play like you – ok, get up every day and play paino 3-4 hours a day for the next 15 years and you can. I hate to ruin the party, or burst the bubble so to speak but here it is: …….. Success takes time.
We all know - eat less, do more, but yet we don’t do it. We stand in our own way, we stop us getting results, we say no to our potential what we could really be and have.
You don’t get to get the results in your riding as often as you like.
Why is that!?!?!?!
Right now you have the results you want. You do! I know you are screaming at me going – I most definitely do not! ... but at some level you simply must, because if you wanted different results you would do different actions.
Stop looking for the ‘quick’ fix, the red pill, the ‘easy’ way to get AMAZING results. If I want to be lean and slim and have a six pack – then I better work hard, exercise a lot, be very careful with my eating, and oh get a spray tan if I want to look like the girl on the bottle. I won’t look like her by popping a pill.
There is a world of difference between what
If you want riding results you will have to... oh my
And of course we don’t just do it in the area of health do we? How many times in our riding do we selfsabotage and stand in our own way of our goals? Not you I’m sure! … But you have friends that do it. You know of others that do it.
And you don’t get to progress as fast or as easily as you would like.

Success takes hard work. Success takes commitment.

Tash’s Training Tip - Why Do We Say “No” to Ourselves god... wait for it... Ride! And push through fears and mental blocks holding you back, and find a way to get results. I’m the rider I am today, because I was willing to do what it takes, the tears, the pain, the disappointments, the hurt, the fear, the worry. All of it, bring it on! I can take it and it makes be better and it makes me hungrier and it makes it worth it all the more when the success comes. All my results I deserve. I earned them and I appreciate them. So what about you? What are you prepared to do? Not prepared to have some
sad moments, that’s cool, that’s your choice … but that also means; prepare for no great, amazing moments either. If you don’t put anything in, you can’t expect anything out. I am a huge believer in action, don’t talk about it – do it. Don’t tell me what you are going to do – tell me when you have done it. And I don’t do any excuses, shut up! No such things, the minute someone gives me a reason why something wasn’t done … myself included! I say exactly the same thing – then don’t say you wanted it, because you are lying, the truth is if this was truly important to you – you would have found a way. A n d y Roddick says it best: "At one point in your life you either have the thing you want or the reasons why you don't."
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine May 2014
All anyone can ever want or expect is to give your best. Give everything your best. Now, people often say to me they did give their best, when in actual fact there is still a lot left in the tank. Dig deeper, try harder, be more, do more, there is always more to give and your job every day is to bring all of you, the best of you, to everything you do. So that’s your challenge for this month when you are riding – make sure you are doing your best, give it everything you have got. That’s all anyone can do, and when you are focused on doing your best, you won’t allow such things as excuses or anything else stand in your way. To Your Success,
Natasha

Tash's Training Tip! When you are riding the sitting trot - smile!! If you are tense in any part of your body, you resist the movement and stop going with the horse. You must be loose and supple to go with the horses back. Smiling helps you loosen the face muscles, which has a carryon effect to the rest of the body...

Kate’s Kickass Tips! Start small, park your horse and take a 1 metre step forwards while holding onto the lead rope, if your horse has never done this he/she’s first response will be to walk forward – which is totally normal. Simply give a backwards aid on the lead rope or with

This month I thought I would discuss with you a training technique called “Ground Tie” or “Park”. Park is simply the ability to lead your horse to a position and leave him/her there unattended without any movement. This training technique will not only teach your horse to stand still wherever you may choose, but it is a proven method of relaxation. Before beginning to teach your horse to park, it is important that he/she knows how to back up as the first response of park will be a forwards movement from the horse. Have your horse in a halter and a long lead rope and hold a long whip as it is easier for quick adjustments.
Start beside your horse in your leading position, then walk away - it will test if your horse is moving off your leading aid or follows your feet.
this area as it’s noisy and has loads of distractions! Start with getting him to park for 10 seconds at a time and increase your time and distance away slowly, the key is to reward at the right time.
Kate’s Kickass Tips! Once you think you have mastered park, then you can really start to test your horse by standing in the leading position and try running forwards to see if he/she follows. Always do 3 repetitions in one place then walk away and do it in another area as horses will often forget the task they were just doing! I hope you guys have enjoyed this
Testing at a further distance
Just remember always feed your horse AWAY from you so he/she doesn’t learn any food aggressive behaviours. I have spoken to a lot of people who have had issues with their horses being impatient or attention demanding when tied up – the most common

issues is pawing. But this isn’t an matter of attention seeking horses, it’s mostly because over time horses have become accustomed to following us wherever we go – in other words they have been trained to follow our legs, not our aids. To ensure that park works remember to ALWAYS lead your horses off an aid, never walk first and allow your horses to follow, as you will be teaching them to follow your legs and not the hand aid, therefore park will never work!
Correcting Milo’s mistake by stepping him back to his original position
Invest in Breeding Shares with your very own breeding permitted imported Dressage Friesian Stallion!
This means a fantastic opportunity has opened up for people who would like to breed with a KFPS foalbook Friesian Ster stallion, imported from Holland, who holds a current breeding permit, without having to purchase and house one of your own.
We had some marvellous people looking to purchase Jorrit a few months ago. But when it came to making the decision we couldn’t bear to part with this stallion. He is so friendly, and everyone’s favourite in the stable - we just couldn’t let him go. However, Ebony Park isn’t using him as much as a breeding stallion, as many of our young fillies are related to him, and thus unable to be bred back to him.
Ebony Park is offering the use of Jorrit to you, to use on your website, and to breed to your mares, as if he were your own stallion! This means you will have your very own stallion to breed your mares to, and produce outstanding foals to excel in the dressage arena... or just to have as your Dream Friesian!! :)
Invest in Breeding Shares with a Friesian Stallion! There are three levels of package available, which depend on your breeding needs and aspirations of your breeding and/or business in the future. This opportunity is via application only and is subject to an in depth conversation, analyzing your goals, to determine what breeding package will ideally suit you and your breeding needs.
Places are strictly limited with a limit placed on packages available, so get in quick otherwise you will miss out. So contact the office on 0422 227 364 or email info@ebonyparkstud.com.au to register your interest and confirm your place. Click here for more information! :)

Fabulous Fabienne’s Friesian Fables Park Jantje (she’s Dante’s 1/2 sister!).
Hi guys, For those of you who haven't met me my name is Fabienne, I’m from Germany. I will be working at Ebony Park for the next 3 months learning all about riding and training Friesians. I have been here for about 4 weeks and have been helping train some of the young horses, including Helena of Ebony Park who is a 3yo purebred mare by Ebony Park Elko, out of Ebony
I had my second ride on her last week and wow is she powerful, with massive movement! While on her back I am constantly talking to her and reassuring her that everything is okay, always trying to get her more relaxed and comfortable with her having me on her back (she’s going to learn to understand german!). With a few more rides I will be off the lunge and riding around the arena by myself. I look forward to riding her and many other horses over my time here at Ebony Park. If you have any questions about Helena, please email them through to info@ebonyparkstud.com.au Until next time,
Fabienne

Ebony Park Rockstar of the Month Paris of Ebony Park and Joanne going to do it for me, so I began my Friesian journey... now all I had to do was wait for my foal to be born! I will never forget the phone call I gotcongratulations, you have a filly! Paris was born 26/8/13 on the day she was due (isn’t Deja Vu a good girl!! It was her first foal and everything). I got to see her in the first 24hrs, which was so exciting! On my first visit to Ebony Park, I was able to meet all the amazing stallions... I was really drawn to Jorrit. He was everything I wanted in a horse looks, presence and a beautiful temperament. I found out that Deja Vu was in foal to Jorrit, and that her foal was available! I didn’t want anything too big, and Deja Vu was absolutely stunning... and pocket sized! I really wanted to make my friesian dreams come true, and this was the foal that was
She was beautiful. I couldn't stop smiling and showing my baby (foal) photos to everyone. Now 7 months have passed and I have her home. She is so friendly and curious, always following me around. It is a delight to watch her grow and see so many of her firsts. My favorite ‘first’ so far is when she discovered carrots. It took two weeks of presenting her with carrots before she finally bit into one. Now of course she loves them, and can spot them a mile away. Owning a Friesian really is a dream come true. A big thank you to the team at Ebony Park for breeding such wonderful horses. - Joanne
