News From Holland - FOUR Stallions Approved After the Central Stallion Proving harness exams in November, the KFPS approved four more stallions for breeding. The judges were very pleased with this fine foursome. All four bring in size, good conformation and promising marks in their proving.
Last year, one of them, Bart van de Kilsdonk (Onne 376 Sport x Tsjerk 328P Sport), could not quite live up to the expectations yet. He now set the record straight, scoring a convincing 84.5 points in harness. As a fouryear , he apparently handles his somewhat shorter frame better, especially in trot and canter. Bart has typical Friesian expression, with his beautiful head and that rich front. Through his dam, a Ster mare by Tsjerk 328P Sport, and his Ster Preferent granddam by Anton 343 Sport, he originates from the well-known Boszorg family (Stam 50), that boasts a lot of predicates. Bart will now be known as Bartele 472. The second stallion Aernold van Marksathe (Wikke 404 Sport x Jakob 302 Sport) has the lowest kinship percentage of the four: 16.8. Following in the footsteps of Wybren 464, Alke 468 and Alwin 469, Aernold is the fourth stallion with the relatively free Jakob 302 Sport in his dam line to be approved within the year, consequently marking the
register ’s focus on genetic diversity. Aernold really improved as the test progressed, the judges commented. His upgrading is not limited to his performance, leading to 84.5 and 85 points for his driving and harness test. He also made a positive change where his conformation is concerned. From a big (1.70 metres), somewhat heavylooking stallion, he transformed into a sharper, modern stallion with more uphill tendency. Inspection spokesman Bauke de Boer: ‘There’s some discussion whether or not the proving should be shortened. Stallions such as Aernold prove it’s better if we don’t.’ Aernold will go by the name of Aarnold 471.
Djarin (Beart 411 Sport x Anton 343 Sport) is an extremely goodlooking stallion, with an opulent, correct conformation and a near perfect forehand. The stallion entered the test two weeks later than the others and took the saddle exam two weeks after the other stallions had. He
nonetheless entered the harness exam simultaneously. Djarin is more of a riding and driving horse than he is a harness horse. He showed excellent walk and ample trot and canter. If his massive body (1.71 metres) becomes even stronger, he might even get further than his scores already suggest: 83 and 81 points as a riding and driving horse. Djarin’s new name is Epke 474.
After Maurus 441 in 2007, once again a herkeuring stallion got himself approved. Djoerd van Stal Linde (Jerke 434 Sport x Bonne 341) was selected for the Central Stallion Proving during the herkeuring of the Second and Third Viewing in the 2012 KFPS Stallion Show. Already during the extensive preparation trajectory in which KFPS instructed the trainers, the stallion showed remarkable progress, which he continued in his test. Djoerd shows lots of space and rhythm in all three basic gaits, gaining him 80 plus points in the riding and driving tests. The stallion also has a lot of breed expression. He’s the first approved son of Jerke 434 Sport, who passed last year’s offspring test with flying colours. His dam is a six-time Preferent Bonne 341 daughter that produces excellent offspring. Djoerd will now be known as Djoerd 473. Source: KFPS website

Tash’s Training Tip - When Things Go Wrong Firstly ... Merry Christmas!!!! How exciting! I wish you all a sensationally super festive season!!! As I was sitting here thinking of what I should write for this month, I looked back on the articles I have written over the year, and I felt I needed to write about overcoming adversity. Most of my articles are very positive and focused on the upside, but what about the downside? What about when things go ‘wrong’? It’s easy to be positive when things are going right. It’s easy to have a great attitude when everything is falling into place. What about when everything is going wrong from every angle in every area of your life? What if no matter what you do, the hits keep coming? A couple of months ago I had a ‘challenging’ time. I didn’t call it ‘challenging’ though—I used a stronger word than that! However, unless you are VERY close to me, no one knows about it. I didn’t talk about it, I didn’t bitch about it, I didn’t complain about it, I didn’t make excuses for it. I didn’t do anything about it. This is because I try and embrace the following principles: NEVER A DRAMA WILL BE SPOKE. That is the first key. Take note of everything you said today. Did
you talk about things that went right? Did you focus on the good? Do you know the type of people that complain all the time? ... Certainly this is not you of course! ... But you know those people? ... You ask ‘how are you?” and you hear the whole story from the headache, to the car that wouldn't start, to bad things at work etc. Ahhh!!! You don't like talking to these people so don’t be that person. Don’t give energy or power to
what you don’t want. Talk about and give energy and power to what you do want. The phrase I say to myself is: “Either change it, or accept it but for goodness sake stop whinging about it.” So if it wasn’t in my power to change I had to accept it and let it go. Sounds easy ... three words ... “LET IT GO”. This can be sometimes challenging to do. If all you’re going to do is complain about it, obsess about it, stress about it, cry about it, then LET IT GO! It has no purpose! In my case I had to let
go of a whole heap of things, including goals that were very important to me. I felt like I had ‘failed’. I felt powerless, depressed, and as if there was no point to it all. But I also knew I was CHOOSING to feel those things. I knew I wasn’t feeling very good thinking and feeling like that so I changed it. It was challenging but there was a choice, and I chose to take responsibility and change my thoughts, so I could change my reality. This leads to … REFRAME Reframing is a concept of NLP (Neuro L i n g u i s t i c Programming) and it basically advocates reframing your situation, so you see it from a different perspective. You can use a context or a content reframe. So for instance if my horse bolted on me I could say - “Wouldn’t that have been SUPER if I was racing in the Melbourne Cup? I wonder if I would have won?” Or “Isn’t it good my horse reacts so well to the lightest of leg aids?” I CONSTANTLY reframe to make my world a happier place. Delusional??? .... Well maybe, but because we can’t experience reality and we can only experience a perception of it, why don’t we make the ‘reality’ as happy as possible.
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine August 2012
6
Tash’s Training Tip - When Things Go Wrong Some reframes I have used are: “Fabulous! I have so much more time to work on my website” - to my arena not being useable and my horse too ill to ride “I am the luckiest rider/trainer in the world to be presented with the most amazing training challenge I have ever come across” - in response to my horse being ‘hard’ to train TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR CHOSEN EMOTION Say this after me ... “Emotions are a choice, emotions are a choice”. Very good! Emotions are a choice! So I’m not saying don’t be human and don’t have emotions, but I am saying take responsibility for the choice. I will say to my husband I am choosing to have puddles on the floor, or I am choosing no responsibility, or I am choosing anger. All choices but by saying I have a choice, that presupposes I also have a choice to ‘stop’ doing them, & choose a different more resourceful emotion in the future. GROWTH Why do problems exist? What is their higher purpose? If you’re not ripe and growing, you’re dead and rotting. Growing means you will be forced out of your comfort zone,. You will make mistakes and you will have setbacks. Nothing worth doing was ever easy! My mentor says “I have an amazing
opportunity to grow right now” to any problem that just presents itself. The things is w h e n problems arise how do you view them? Do you think “oh oh”, or do you get excited?!? Someone pointed out to me this exercise and I encourage all of you to try it. Think of the worst time in your life. Say three events that really got you down and depressed, where you thought your world had ended. Looking back on those times though, it was the best thing that could have happened. For example…. • Getting fired led you to your dream job • A fall from a horse led you to the best dressage test ever • A failed relationship led you to your new spouse Whatever it is, when our world crashes we feel it is just that - a crash! Looking back however, it was the crash we needed to change something in our life in order to grow and become more. So there are some keys to managing adversity. But guess what? Sometimes you don’t want to look at the bright side, you don’t want to control your emotions and you don’t want to
grow. You just want to yell, cry, scream or crawl into a ball and not face the world. And you know what - that’s ok. People say to me, “oh you’re a positive success coach you don’t understand!” Hey I have challenges too! I am human, and bad things happen to me the same as other people. The only thing is .... how long do I stay in ‘pity land’? How long can I have a ‘pity party’? My personal rule is 1 hour. Really what a waste of time— just get on with it. But ok if you want to shut out the world, have a cry and feel sorry for yourself. Do it! Do it really well! After that hour, get up and get on with it. As they say “Cry a river, build a bridge and ... GET OVER IT!” To Your Success,
Natasha

Lovely Loes and Delightful Danielle!! Hello Everybody!!
on your stirrups -it’s all about seat!
This month we wanted to talk to you about your balance and your seat - and give you a couple of exercises you can use to improve these in your riding!!
This helps to strengthen your legs to keep your toes in and heels down - a lot of riders have a bad habit of pointing their toes out and heels on the stomach of the horse (Loes included!)
We are always dreaming about being awesome horse riders, and finding ways to improve on your riding!!! =) In order to make this dream a reality, it takes a lot of hard work and commitment - but also a whole lot of fun!! This month we would like to show you our training around seat and balance, because this is one of the most important things you need to work on in order to sit correctly on the horse and allow the horse to move underneath us like a star!!
$ anie%e riding wi&out s'rrup(
There are a couple of exercises that you can use - t h e fi r s t i s r i d i n g withoutstirrups... now why would your ride without stirrups? We do this because it helps you to learn more about balance and what muscles you need to engage and relax to keep your balance on the horse - without relying
So for everyone with this habit I would recommend riding without stirrups for a month and see how much your improve! The next exercise we use to help with balance and seat is riding without reins!
We had a lot of fun making a video showing you how we do it, and some exercises that you can use in your riding to improve these skills - click here to watch it now! Ebony Park Friesian Magazine August 2012

Lovely Loes and Delightful Danielle
because you now don’t have them you have to work on getting stronger and sitting deeper in the saddle! Have heaps of fun with your horse playing around with this exercises!
)oes - no s'rrups OR reins!! (above and below)
We usually ride on the lunge when we are riding with no reins, just so that the horse keeps on the circle and we don’t have to worry about what direction the horse is going in - we can focus solely on seat and balance!
hands move - and realise that if you don’t have steady hands, this is what your horse is feeling on his mouth all the time when you are riding! That’s another reason why seat and balance are so important!
When you ride without reins, you need to completely rely on your body and especially your seat for balance.
So this exercise is really great as you really have to use your stomach t o balance, and you c a n actually feel when you would normally grab the reins - but
Danielle has a habit is that if she gets off balance, she leans forward and hangs onto the reins! It’s really good to watch when you are riding with no reins how much your
We would love to hear how this helps with your riding!! Good luck and have an awesome Christmas with your horses! We would also like to thank Georgette who spent the whole week doing work experience with us!! See you next month!! =) Loes and Danielle!!!

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Diarrhoea in Foals Hey guys! Since we have so many foals on the ground, I thought it best to cover a topic relating to foal health! Scouring or diarrhoea in foals is r e a l l y, r e a l l y c o m m o n apparently it is the most commonly treated condition in foals! But it’s nothing to be scared of - we generally get a couple of foals a year with diarrhoea, it’s a pretty normal thing!
effect!) as well as an inability to digest fibre when foals start trying out grass at around 1-2 weeks of age. If this is the cause of your foals diarrhoea, then you just need to treat it with something like peptosil or scourban, which helps to bind your foal up... because it will generally get better really fast, and the foal will be none the worse for wear!
So what do you need to know if your foal has diarrhoea, and how do you treat it or prevent it from happening in the first place? The first thing you need to know is that there are many causes of diarrhoea - some which you need to worry about, and others which you will just need keep an eye on your foal for... but the most important thing to realise is that foals dehydrate really, really easily and quickly - so if they are losing fluid from diarrhoea, then they are probably getting dehydrated! If your foal has prolonged diarrhoea, no matter the cause, it is a good idea to call out the vet - even the most innocent cause can have bigger problems the longer it goes on such as secondary infection and dehydration. There are some ‘physical’ causes of diarrhoea - which include an increased flow of food/milk through the gut of the foal - are common in really young foals due to milk overload (milk has a laxative
The best thing to do in these cases is to treat the foal as soon as you see it scouring this prevents secondary infections and dehydration, and continue to treat the foal until it is all cleared up - and make sure you keep a close eye on your foal, to make sure it is still drinking, still bright and happy as soon as it starts to seem dull and lethargic, or not suckling very often, you can assume that your foal is getting sicker and call the vet, as foals can go downhill REALLY fast! Diarrhoea is really irritating to your foals skin, and tends to burn all of the skin (and make the hair fall out) where it has stuck to your foals rump... so if you can manage it, clean the
area gently with warm water your foal will feel so much better for it! There are also infectious causes of diarrhoea, with the most common one being Rotavirus, with pathogenic bacteria often becoming a problem once a foal’s gut immunity is weakened. The important thing to remember when trying to prevent infectious causes of diarrhoea, and to also prevent it’s spread, is to make sure your paddocks are not too populated with mares and foals - it’s best to keep them in small groups and to make sure your paddocks are kept fairly clean (picking up poo or rotating paddocks really helps). If you are unsure about whether your foal has an infectious or a physical cause of diarrhoea, the best thing to do is to take it’s temperature - a physical cause of diarrhoea such as milk overload will see the foal at a normal temperature, and the foal will remain bright and happy! If the temperature is above 38.4 C, then it could be an infectious cause, and the best thing to do is to call out your vet for further treatment. Until next time - to your dreams becoming reality,

5 Minutes with Rafael Soto Natasha attended a clinic with Rafael Soto towards the end of November with Abe... so this month’s “5 minutes with...” just had to be about him so you can have an idea what he is all about! :) Rafael Soto was born in 1957 in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), where horse tradition is very strong. Rafael is a dedicated horseman who has been training horses and riders all his life, following in his father’s footsteps and commencing his riding career at a tender age when his father bought and ran an equitation centre in Palma de Mallorca. It was there that he had his first important dressage success, becoming Balearic Regional Champion in 1982. In 1987, he obtained his Spanish Instructor’s Qualification, and returned to his native city to pursue his equestrian career. After winning his first National Championship in 1994, with ‘Flamenco‘, he was chosen to form part of the National Dressage Team, representing Spain in the 1995 European Championships. From that date on, he has continued on the Spanish Team, going from strength to strength with his two partners, first ‘Flamenco’ then ‘Invasor’, both purebred Andalusian stallions. His most important successes in Dressage competitions are: National Championship: 5 times gold medallist, four with ‘Invasor’, one with ‘Flamenco’.
3ource: www.eqtalk.com
European Championship: Team Silver Medallist in Hickstead in 2003 with ‘Invasor’, plus two other 4th places. Top ten individual qualifications in the last three European Championships in which he has participated, 1999, 2001 and 2003. World Championship: 1998 Team 6th Place 2002 Team Bronze Medal, Individual 6th Place Olympic Games: Atlanta 1996 Team 7th Place Sydney 2000 Team 5th Place, Individual 12th Athens 2004 Team SILVER MEDAL, Individual 8th Place Rafael is the Chief Instructor at the Royal Riding School in Jerez, and he travels around the world conducting clinics, where he especially likes working horses in hand and taking it back to basics. “The most indispensable principle of work in hand, is control of the balance of the horse and his relationship with the ground - this will permit you to develop collected airs, piaffe and passage, especially piaffe.”
3ource: www.silverbookandalusians.co4
Rafael says: “My method for training both rider and horse can be summarized with two phrases. Firstly, "the theory is the knowledge, and the practise is the doing, but the knowledge must always precede the action." This phrase was coined by Colonel Podhajsky of the Vienna Riding School. The second phrase belongs to my father. "The most important thing is knowing when to stop." A sound basis for an exercise is more important than the exercise itself. Knowing and being able to explain the basis of balance for the horse and rider at all levels is my method.” Source: www.eqtalk.com; www.eurodressage.com; Chris Hector article.

Make Y!r F"esian Dream Come True $% Ch"&mas
Hello Friesian lovers!!!!
I am so excited to bring you our F r i e s i a n D r e a m C o m e Tr u e Christmas Sale!!!!! :):):):)
He is truly first class quality and will be a huge asset to anyone’s Friesian breeding program.
We have had an amazing 9 foals born this year at Ebony Park, and every single one of them are wonderful, unique and special in their own way. Unfortunately, I don't have time to ride them all, and the decision has to be made on which ones will be offered for sale to make your Friesian dream come true! So making the 2013 Ebony Park plan, including competitions, my planned pregnancy, achieving our mission and carrying out our 50 year plan (!) and setting our goals I have had to make some big decisions! :) This is a good thing!!! Because now you are given the opportunity to make your Friesian Dream come true!!!! So many people contact us through the year looking for horses for sale, and 95% of the time we can't help them, as we don't have what they are needing. Now we have some very exciting horses on offer which is just what you may be looking for.
The first horse I am offering has probably been the hardest decision for me, as he is truly an exceptional stallion and a great asset to Ebony Park. This horse is Ebony Park Dante, by Norbert 444 who is a Champion dutch stallion, winning the prestigious Friesian Stallion Show in 2012.
The second horse is our pocket rocket Ebony Park Achillies. We have had Achillies for sale for a little while but haven't advertised him much, and we are weren’t really focussed on finding him a new home as we are all having fun riding him as he is so easy. (Check out the video of him and the girls doing no stirrups and no reins even - with the whipper snipper and mowers going on all around him on page 8-9). To make it easy for him to find his new home, we have radically reduced his price to ensure he finds a place and an owner to love him and grow with him.
The third horse is Snow White. Snow White is our little Friesian surprise with white! A white star and a white foot which is absolutely gorgeous - but not really allowed in the Friesian studbook. That puts her as a dressage horse which suits her perfectly as she has one of the most exceptional canters you will ever see! This is also a massive opportunity for someone to get a Friesian dressage horse at an amazing price reduced because of her white.
The
fourth horse is Kate. Kate is a delightful filly with the biggest attitude and confidence!!!! She is also beautiful ... just like our Kate in the office! :) She has amazing bloodlines with Abe her grandsire and Jorrit her sire. This makes her a 3/4 friesian - so if bred back to a Friesian will make a 7/8th foal. She is little so we have also hugely reduced her price to ensure she finds a home where she will be loved and nurtured.
The fifth horse is JB. We were initially keeping him and training him to Grand Prix as our next schoolmaster once Tambo is retired, but our plans have changed and we have now decided our superstar stallion Jorrit will be our next schoolmaster, which means JB needs to find a home where he can delight and deliver amazing results to his new owner. I look forward to chatting to you about these horses and finding the right owner for my boys and girls!!! To your success, Natasha P.S - Payment plans are available if needed P.P.S - Really excited to meet you!!!! :)

RICE: YOUR GIFT P $69,997
Born 21/04/2009, ~16hh (still growing), jet black imported friesian stallion (in utero). By the Champion Approved licensed Dutch Friesian Stallion Norbert 444, who is a favourite sire currently in Holland! Registration Number: 0360 0420 0905 604 Dante is by Champion dutch stallion Norbert 444, who recently won the prestigious Friesian Stallion Show in Holland at the start of 2012. We imported his gorgeous mother, Ebony Park Jantje from Holland, and within 2 months of his birth, Jantje was competed by Natasha, with three floating paces and one of the easiest horses to ride! Dante looks to be a superb mixture of sire and dam – he is solid, strong and powerful, at the same time being easy and willing to train. Natasha says this stallion is the definition of ‘easy’ - you get on and do nothing, and the horse performs exactly how you want underneath you. To handle he is quiet and obliging. He would make someone looking to start their own friesian stud, or an add-on as another high performance stallion, as a great asset to any Friesian program, considering his bloodlines and breeding potential.

Ebony Park Achillies : $39,997
USUAL PRICE
RICE: YOUR GIFT P $19,997
Achillies is our little pocket rocket! Achillies was the first of our foals imported in utero (we imported his mother Jolanda already in foal and he was the result) and is by Arjen 417 who won the silver whip at the Northern dressage Competition for Friesian horses, and has also achieved the sports predicate for excellence in the dressage arena. We think this lovely gelding is even more special as he was born on 29th February in a Leap Year (2008)! Achillies has been out and competed in a couple of Preliminary dressage tests, and we have been focussing on educating him further with a range of different riders! For some reason even though both mum and dad are over 15.3, Achillies is 15.1 and doesn’t look like he has any more growing to do! Don’t let his small size fool you though! His trot is expressive, with a beautiful action, and his canter is soft and rhythmical. He is a delight to train, being very responsive and light, and also trying so hard for his rider. He is very sensitive though so needs an experienced rider to give him the confidence to shine.

Snow White of Ebony Park 4,997 USUAL PRICE: $2
ICE: YOUR GIFT PR $14,997
Click here now for video of Snow White and more information!
Snow White is a surprise from Kirsten this year, as she has a white star and a white foot! The Friesian Society doesn't like white on Friesians, so she is ineligible to be registered in the higher studbooks, but she is still a purebred Friesian. We love her and love her white, as it certainly sets her apart from the others, and makes her in our eyes the prettiest. She has a wonderful trot and one of the best canters we have seen in a Friesian foal. We think she will have an amazing dressage career in front of her and will certainly stand out with her white! If you have always wanted a dressage Friesian - this is your chance to get an exceptional foal for a very considerable saving on price.

Kate is the first foal from EP Anika, who is by our Superstar Grand Prix Stallion Ebony Park Abe, and by our beautiful stallion Ebony Park Jorrit. Kate has an extraordinary trot like her father and a very cheeky opinionated character, very much like her grandfather. She would suit someone who is looking for a 3/4 Friesian to breed with or compete in dressage. With her trot she will be highly competitive in the dressage arena. She is on the small side being a maiden foal from a fairly small mare, and will mature around 15hh-15.2hh, so her perfect owner is someone who is looking for a smaller, finer type horse.
