Hi Fabulous Friesian Fanatics!! :) HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hope you had a fantastic festive season! After a small break here at Ebony Park, we have hit the ground running in 2013! With new horses to break in, workshops to run and events to plan, we are so excited to see what 2013 has in store for us! In this month’s magazine, Loes and Danielle show off Jorrit, who is now available for lessons! This is a unique opportunity to not only have lessons on a purebred Friesian, but to discover what it is like to ride an imported Friesian dressage stallion! Tash talks about what the New Year means to her, and how to make sure you set goals for 2013 that you are going to keep. This month I continue the theme of foals, and look at a problem called joint-ill, which noone wants to come across with their foal, but which you need to have some knowledge on so that you can prevent it or detect it early in your foal... We are also very excited to have a New Year special on our fabulous Friesian pocket rocket, Ebony Park Achillies. If you think this rising 5yo gelding is your Dream Horse, make sure you check out his page on our website, and place your bid on him in the month of January - what would you pay for him? What do you think he is worth? Have a Gigantic January!! To Your Dreams Becoming Reality,

News From Holland - A Great Stallion Passes Away Leffert 306P Sport passes away Leffert 306P Sport has passed away (Leffert is the grandsire of Ebony Park Jantje, and great-grandsire to Ebony Park Dante). The 26-year old Stempel stallion was fit to the end, and then suddenly deteriorated, leaving his owners no other choice than to give him peace. Leffert 306 was stationed at Obbe and Margriet van der Weide’s stallion station his entire life. Last year, he consequently moved from Nijega to Ansen with them.
His breeder Marcus Doller of the Dutch town of Haulerwijk has always been his owner. He bred the Tamme 276 son out of his well-known Oepke 266 daughter Bontsje Ster Preferent. He also bred Leffert’s granddam Enka Ster Preferent (Ritske 202), who’s also the granddam of Feike 395, as well as Enka’s full sister Lady Spray Ster
Preferent, who is Ulbert 390’s granddam through her Leffert 306 d a u g h t e r Famke D. Leffert 306P Sport, who acquired his Sport predicate in dressage, is of incalculable value to Friesian horse breeding, primarily through his sons Heinse 354, Onne 376, Mintse 384, Tsjalke 397 (Ebony Park Jantje’s sire) and Jesse 435. He also has thirteen approved grandsons and three approved great-grandsons. 373 Offspring have the Ster predicate, 11 daughters are Model and no less than 30 daughters are now Preferent. Leffert 306 will above all be remembered for producing horses with a lot of breed expression and a beautiful front. He’s responsible for a number of good harness horses in that sport. Heinse 354 as well as Onne 376 was a national Honorary Class Champion.
Preferent predicate given his influence on breeding. It was one of a total of four tributes during the KFPS Stallion Show. He made it to Overall Stallion Champion twice. He made his last appearance at that show last year, when he was honoured for his 25th birthday. With Leffert 306P Sport, the breed loses one of its most influential designers of the contemporary Friesian horse. In 2005, Leffert 306 was awarded with the Ebony Park Friesian Magazine January 2013

There are two competitions booked in this month:
I would love for you to email me - info@ebonyparkstud.com.au and answer these three teeny tiny points: 1. How do you like material on Friesians delivered? - i.e. video to download, magazine, email, etc... 3. If Ebony Park was to completely deliver outstanding value and unbelievable care and service to you - what would you want to have?
Sunday 20th January
I know 95% of you won't email me, and that’s ok, I know the non-action takers in the room :)

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Joint Ill in Foals Joint ill is the common term for a joint infection caused by a variety of bacteria, in the foal (also known as septic arthritis). The infection often spreads to the bones surrounding the joints, and the foal is generally shows other symptoms such as diarrhoea, high temperatures, pneumonia, septicaemia etc. Joint ill is most commonly seen in very young foals less than a week old (but can affect foals up to 4 months of age), and is usually caused by bacteria which spread through the blood stream. The reason why the joints are affected from bacteria in the bloodstream is due to a number of reasons, the first being that foals have more fragile immune systems, as their initial immunity is derived solely from their mothers first milk (called colostrum). Another reason is that there is a huge amount of blood flow to the bones, as they are growing so rapidly in a young foal – the bacteria may lodge in the growth plates or the bones, as well as the joint, and the infection will spread from there. Joint ill is the most common cause of lameness in foals, so it is wise to treat any lameness, especially in very young foals, as suspicious. Typically, the infected joint will swell up, be painful for the foal, and feel hot to touch. A day or so later, the foal will become lame (to varying degrees), but this is not always the case. The more
commonly affected joints are the stifles, hocks and knees. A vet who suspects joint ill will take a sample of fluid from the joint, as well as blood from the foal. White blood cell counts will be increased generally in both blood and joint fluid, which indicate an infection.
X-rays may also be taken, to make sure the problem is not a bone fracture, and to monitor the spread of infection from the joint to the bone. As soon as joint ill is suspected, the vet will start your foal on a course of antibiotics, and once samples of blood and joint fluid have been taken and examined, the antibiotics can be tailored to target the specific type of bacteria causing the infection. Foals will generally be
kept on antibiotics for around 3 weeks after the swelling and lameness has gone down, just to make sure the infection is completely gone. Affected joints need to be treated quickly and aggressively to achieve the best possible outcome. This is due to the swelling in the joint causing irreparable damage to the cartilage and possible serious damage to the growing joint. Generally the vet will lavage the joints that are affected – this means using a needle to pump and wash sterile fluid through the joint, to flush all of the things (such as inflammatory cells, bacteria etc) that we don’t want, out of the joint, and to relieve some of the swelling. Many foals who have joint ill are also systemically unwell – they may have diarrhoea, an umbilical infection, or a number of other problems, which all need to be treated accordingly – basically this is just common sense – keep a really close eye on your sick foal, and make sure the bet is called if you have any concerns! The foal will also need to be keep fairly confined for a period of time – in a stable or small yard, to prevent excessive weight bearing on the joints – your vet will advise you on times and what to do. Something that people often overlook is the effect antibiotics have on the rest of the foal – especially the normal gut bacteria in the foal. Due to the

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Joint Ill in Foals antibiotics killing off all of this normal gut flora, and the stress the foal is probably going to be under, the foal may develop gut ulcers – this is painful for the foal, and will cause the foal to possibly go off its milk. Preventative treatment is probably a good idea!! There are a number of management strategies that you can put in place that will ensure that you have the best chance of preventing joint ill happening in the first place (it will not eliminate the risk, but will certainly reduce it!). These include ensuring that your foal is suckling within an hour of birth, and that your mare has adequate colostrum, that your mare is vaccinated appropriately and has had time to build up antibodies to her local environment; disinfecting the umbilicus of the foal at birth, ensuring there is a clean environment for the mare to foal – it is important to rest and rotate paddocks and yards used for foaling, as well and ensuring that they are not overcrowded (overstocking increases environmental contamination). The earlier the disease is detected, the better the outcome. Here at Ebony Park, we had one of our purebred foals go quite lame – we called the vet straight away, as we were concerned it was joint ill.
Luckily for us, and for the foal, this wasn’t the case – it was a kick from one of the other horses – but how do you tell the difference between joint ill or not?
There were a number of reasons why we didn’t need to panic – the first was that the foal was already 3 weeks old, and getting old enough that a joint ill was not going to be a common problem (but it can still affect foals up to 4 months of age, so it was not ruled out). The second reason was that the foal had no swelling or heat in the joints, and no other secondary signs that indicated that it was sick, such as diarrhoea, depression, lack or nursing etc. She was also in a
clean environment, had no signs of navel infection, and had adequate colostrum intake in her first 12 hours – all indications that she had the best chance possible of remaining healthy! We like to keep our mares and foals in together a day or so after the mare have foaled – there are a number of positives and negatives that you can argue for this practice, the main negative being what we have seen here – that the foal was kicked, probably by another mare or an older foal that it was playing with. However, we firmly believe that the social interaction with the other mares and foals is very important, especially when our horses are young, and we like to let them be horses as much as possible before they are broken in – we find that this gives them better manners and makes them able to be put in with other horses without too much fuss later in life, as they know how to behave and interact with other horses. Until next time - to your dreams becoming reality,

Tash’s Training Tip - Begin as You Would Like to Continue Happy New Year!!! :) God I love the New Year! I love it for so many reasons! A new start, a new focus and it is the quietest month as far as success coaching goes. Now I know you may be wondering - What? Doesn’t everyone want a success coach to help them with their goals for the new year? - No they don’t. And I’ll get to why in a moment. First let’s talk about you! What about you? How is your New Year? Hands up - did you make a n y N e w Ye a r s Resolutions? Keep your hand up if you have still kept it? I know you know the stats... I hope so because I don’t know the accurate number... but heaps, loads, stacks of people still are not doing on the 31st December what they said they would do on the 1st January in that year. Interesting. Why is that? Well I think it’s the same as why people don’t need a success coach in January. You see they don’t need me. They have their motivation. I’m sure you have heard gym memberships go through the roof in January ... but how many people are still attending the gym 12 months
later? Hell what about 90 days later!? You see, you don’t need a success coach to do a New Year’s Resolution. You have the motivation, you know this year will be different, but unfortunately for so many people, by April you would have fallen back into your old patterns and habits... Not any
So let’s take fitness as an example first. Most people base it on a weight. I will weigh X by Y date. I have a huge problem with that! I have done that! And I got my goal, tick I weighed X by Y date. But what about the ‘how’? I did it by eating a block of chocolate a day and NOTHING else for two weeks! Then after goal was ticked and done I ate everything I wanted and my weight went back up. Interesting. My goal now is different. My new goal is:
one of you of course... but other people you know! So here is why I loathe New Year’s Resolutions and what I prefer instead. It comes back to the quote “Begin as you would like to continue.” This basically means to achieve this goal I need to be able to do this forever.
It is 31st December 2013, and I value health and vitality. I make healthy choices 80% of the time and LOVE fruit, vegetables and water. I LOVE to exercise and do so daily, enjoying the time it gives me to focus on self and what I want to create in the world around me. Now do you see the weight will take care of itself. And do you see how it was never about the weight! I might look fantastic at 58kg, 62kg, 66kg. Who knows? Who knows what my weight should be.

Tash’s Training Tip - Begin as You Would Like to Continue It’s not about a number on the scales that determines how I should feel about myself. All that matters is I have boundless energy, perfect health and vitality with no sickness, and I look SUPER in a pair of white johdpurs - ok so I don’t know how anyone, even a supermodel looks good in white johdpurs, but you know what I mean! Now let’s look at riding. So instead of “I will win Grade 1 with 70%” - how about valuing partnership and effortlessness between you and your horse. How about the goal is being calm, centered, balanced with a horse underneath you that reacts to the tiniest of aids and dances underneath you willingly and beautifully! Wow! Wouldn’t you rather want that! I know if I had the choice of a win and 70%, but I was disappointed in the test as I wasn’t in control, and the horse and I made mistakes that means NOTHING. However, realizing the goal of c o m p l e t e h a r m o n y, effortlessness and beauty! Ya! I want that one! People can get so caught up in the goal of the win or the score they take short cuts, they stress their horse, they rush. But if the goal is what you need to have anyway in order for the result, do you see it is taken care of?
In coaching we have what you call the be/do/have model. Who do I need to be, in order so I can do what I have to do, to have what I want to have. The ‘have’ is the result - but it can’t be the focus. Unfortunately that’s all we tend to focus on. We live in a ‘have’ society. I need to have the big TV, have the money, have the house, have the success. I prefer to focus on who do I need to be. You see if I am being the right person, I will do the right thing, and the having ... well, the having just
takes care of itself :) So have fun in January and maybe you want to change some goals to ‘being’ goals rather than ‘having’ goals. Because I can tell you now, I have had goals achieved in both areas and the ‘being’ goals are so much more satisfying and lasting. With the have goal, you just want the next have. To Your Success,
Natasha

Lovely Loes and Delightful Danielle!!
Hi everyone!! Happy New Year! We can’t believe how fast 2012 went by :) This month we are very excited to offer the opportunity to have lessons on one of our gorgeous purebred Friesian stallions, Ebony Park Jorrit. Natasha has competed Jorrit in dressage up to Medium level, and more recently, Danielle has been having lessons on this beautiful stallion, and she is very pleased to say that her seat has improved out of sight!
So we thought we would show you a little bit of what we do in the lessons, and what Jorrit is like to ride - click here to check out the video and to hear Loes explaining how Friesians are different to warmbloods and thoroughbreds to ride! Friesians tend to have much bigger movement (and bigger bodies all over) that the lighter breeds, and on top of that,
they have upright necks and a tendency to shorten their necks rather than stretch their neck out into the contact... this makes them a very unique horse to ride. With their quiet temperament and willing nature, they are a pleasure to ride and train that’s what attracted them to Ebony Park in the first place! If you are looking to take your dressage riding to the next level, or you just love Friesians and you would love to have a chance to experience what riding a purebred Friesian stallion is like, then click here now for more information. Until next month! Loes and Danielle

5 Minutes with Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz Sliding into the top ten dressage pairs in the world, Juan Manuel Muñoz Diaz and his PRE-sational horse Fuego proved this breed has a great talent for sport. "To be riding the world's best dressage PRE is a feeling of great satisfaction and I feel incredibly lucky to be the rider of Fuego for the past 10 years," Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz explained. With a score of 75.608% in the Grand Prix in the Olympics this year Juan qualified in 10th place for the Grand Prix Special and went on to delight his audience. Yet again he made his nation extremely proud. "I was very happy to get the Spanish team off to such a great start and I will never forget being number 10 in the world.” Dropping a little in the Special with a 75.476%, Juan re-instated 10th place after his musical performance. He says the character of Fuego carried him all the way. "Fuego is extraverted, joyful, expressive, sensitive and noble. Without doubt a wonderful horse." "Happy" with his result at his second Olympics Juan says there is still more to come and hopes to keep on reaching for those prime positions. "I really would love to be even higher, but it is difficult. The level of the horses gets better and better every year." While there will never be a horse equal to Fuego in Juan's eyes, the Spaniard believes there will be many with similar potential and the sire's sons are already well on their way to dressage stardom. "Do I love Fuego? Yes, of course. He is my partner and my friend for over ten years.” Balance and talent is what Juan considers to make a good dressage horse and lucky for him Fuego has ample supply of both. "Fuego is special and after a much deserved vacation, he will be brought in for light training and take up his roll as stallion." Bred by Joaquin Marquez Gonzalez and owned by Yeguada Cardenas, Fuego is the joyful horse of the barn. Juan confessed you would "need a book" to keep record of all his funny moments with Fuego and hopes there will be many more great moments to come. "I would love to go to the WEG 2014 or the 2016 Games, but if we go it will be on another horse." Not stopping his riding career until "he physically can no longer do it" Juan admitted it was a long road to the success he has had today, but feels his career has more highlights to come. "To get Fuego to Grand Prix I had to ride him everyday with perseverance, dedication, and push myself to be a part of the big game." Inspired by Carl Hester and Hubertus Schmidt, Juan is "very satisfied" with his own work, but of course there is always one image that every rider dreams of fulfilling: "If I could ride any horse in the world dead or alive it would be Totilas!" NEW CHILLIES HIS A D IN F S U P HEL re ME! - For mo FOREVER HO your and to place information ! bid Click Here
Achillies is our little pocket rocket! Achillies was the first of our foals imported in utero (we imported his mother Jolanda already in foal and he was the result) and is by Arjen 417 who won the silver whip at the Northern dressage Competition for Friesian horses, and has also achieved the sports predicate for excellence in the dressage arena. We think this lovely gelding is even more special as he was born on 29th February in a Leap Year (2008)! Achillies has been out and competed in a couple of Preliminary dressage tests, and we have been focussing on educating him further with a range of different riders! For some reason even though both mum and dad are over 15.3, Achillies is 15.1 and doesn’t look like he has any more growing to do! Don’t let his small size fool you though! His trot is expressive, with a beautiful action, and his canter is soft and rhythmical. He is a delight to train, being very responsive and light, and also trying so hard for his rider. He is very sensitive though so needs an experienced rider to give him the confidence to shine.
