Greetings, librarians! This summer, I joined Brodart’s fantastic team of hard-working, knowledgeable librarians and support staff to launch Brodart's Bookworm Youth Services E-Newsletter, with a mission to build upon our existing children’s and teen programs and bring you useful updates, new series offerings, fun and inspirational programming resources, and more. I’m excited to share with you some of our future plans.

As the photo attests, I am a cat lover. Here I am with my beloved boy Canyon, who will readily attest to my other passion, reading, as it often provides him with the additional lap time he seeks.

A native of central PA, I was lucky to find my first library assistant position in high school and spent my college years on work study assignments in the library, too – often honored to listen as budding readers enthusiastically gave their (sometimes lengthy!) story synopses during their summer reading program check-ins. Those early assignments made me understand what it means to be a busy librarian, how important the community is to the library’s success, and how useful and time-saving the right collection development and programming tools can be.

Over the last 20+ years, Youth Services initiatives for libraries have been my focus: hosting new title presentations for professional development, cultivating selection lists focused on timely topics and trends, curating a library binding (prebind) program, providing summer reading solutions, editing a newsletter, and lots of projects in between. I’m happy to be back in the Allegheny Mountains, continuing to share what I’ve learned in my new role at Brodart as well as hearing your needs and working to fulfill them.

The inaugural Brodart Youth Services E-newsletter is coming soon, and will offer book reviews, series and movie/TV tie-in updates, our latest graphic novel lists, ALA award buzz, and more!

A wonderful programming resources page, with downloadable Storytime activities and book club guides, checklists, and other patron-facing pieces, is underway as well. Watch for these launches by following Brodart Youth Services on Facebook.

I look forward to partnering with you to provide the best books at the right time, and make sharing them with your community fun and exciting. Do you have specific needs or suggestions? If so, I’m ready to hear them! Please reach out to BYS@brodart.com and I’ll be in touch soon.

Wendy and Willow

Wendy is a girl, and Willow is…well, a witch. When the pair first meet, it’s not love at first sight. Each one does not want to share their room with the other. Will these two ever find a way to get along? These first chapter books share stories of understanding and friendship. Notes to caregivers and teachers provide question prompts to encourage reader comprehension and extension. Downloadable Teacher’s Notes available.

Stephanie Bange is a former youth services librarian (having worked with ages birth-teens while working in school and public libraries) and curriculum materials center director (where she instructed preservice teachers how to use books in their classroom).

Getting kids motivated to read can sometimes be challenging. What can you do to help motivate today's boys and girls to explore different literary genres, widen the scope of their reading, and teach them critical thinking skills at the same time? One way is to immerse them in a selection of fun books to read and involve them in an awards selection process with those titles.

My 5th grade teacher read aloud Newbery Award-winning books during rest time after lunch recess every day. We were exposed to many literary genres that year. Some books held me captivated; others were forgettable. I became a reader at that time, motivated to explore more because of this experience. Today, it is not unusual to overhear parents encouraging their kids to read the "great books with gold medals on them" rather than allowing them to decide what to read. Keep in mind that most national award-winning books — like the Newbery and the National Book Award — are selected by adults and cover a wide age range that may have limited appeal, so may not be enjoyed by all.

How can you connect today's kids to relevant books through a book award process? While you could hold your own book award contest, a great place to start is with your state's book awards program. All 50 states have children's book awards that encourage student participation. Many are broken down into smaller grade groupings, ex. Pre2, gr. 3-5, etc. While the list of eligible titles is usually curated by a group of adults (usually librarians and/or teachers), only children determine the winner; there are a few exceptions to this. For example, in Ohio, young people not only vote for the Buckeye Children's Book Award (gr. K-2, gr. 3-5, gr. 6-8, Teen), they also nominate the books for the next cycle — making it a book award selected by children & teens, for children & teens. Check your state children's/teen book award to see if this is the case where you live, as it will offer more opportunity to engage young readers. Often books on state book awards lists have not won an award, so this brings lesser-known, engaging titles to their attention. These state book award nominees often include a good mix of genres and a range of reading abilities at each level.

You can incorporate state award book nominees into your curriculum or programming for a time period of your choice, focusing on them for a week or spreading it out over a month or two. You will often find online toolkits or teacher resources to hold thoughtful discussions and activities for each title to familiarize the kids with each book before the big election. These book extensions will help develop language skills, improve visual thinking, engage them, and just have fun — no testing needed. Check your state's children's book award criteria and learn how you can participate, so you can get your young charges involved in our democratic process of voting.

To help you find your state's children's book awards, two websites are helpful.

Tell Me

More

An interview with Tanvi Berwah author of Monsters Born and Made

Q. How long have you been writing?

A. I remember wanting to create stories as soon as I understood that is something I could do. My parents gave me tapes to record stories that I was making up, and once I learned how to write properly, I began scribbling short stories, and then when I was older I was writing bad rip-offs of books like Eragon and Lord of the Rings I attempted my first full-length original novel when I was 19.

Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer?

A. Absolutely! Like I said, I have always created stories in one way or another. And because my parents encouraged my love of stories and bought me comics and children’s magazines, I knew that that is something people do for a living. Over the years I did contemplate other professions, but it wasn’t at the expense of being a writer.

Q. When did you know you wanted to write a book?

A. As soon as I knew books existed! I wasn’t capable of writing a full-length book when I was younger, but that didn’t stop me from trying. I finished my first original novel at the age of 19 and once I was satisfied that I could do it, there was no turning back.

Q. What is the inspiration for the story in Monsters Born and Made?

A. Monsters Born and Made is inspired by a lot of different things–my love of the ocean, our deteriorating natural world, rapidly increasing social inequalities, all of that sparked the idea of a broken, oceanic world. Hindu mythology also has a brief mention of emerald green water horses that dwell at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. It was such a cool bit of information that I had to use it, although I did twist the horses into a wholly new kind of animal which I call the maristag.

Q. Is there a specific message you want to share?

A. Primarily this story is an exploration of a society divided on the lines of caste and class, and how the lack of community stands against any real change. I hope this book adds to the conversation of community-building and alternate ways of social systems.

Q. What is your writing process like?

A. My writing process used to be free writing and seeing where that takes me. Now, it’s an abundance of daydreaming and thinking before I start typing. The time I take before I start writing gives me a good idea of what I want the end of the story to be like, and I build a short synopsis of major plot

points, which I think of as a map as I go on the hike of writing. In this way, I have a direction but still get the joy of exploration during the actual writing.

Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

A. My research usually involves studying history and social settings. I like to read about people, such as historical diaries and news reports, plus letters and articles. It gives me an insight into what people are actually like, while also giving me a big picture of their surroundings. For Monsters Born and Made, I also researched about climate, the sea, and sea creatures like cephalopods and how evolution takes place around oceans. I try to do this before I start writing because research is a wormhole that you can fall into and it becomes difficult to get out, and generally try to give myself a few weeks, not necessarily in a row, to keep only for research.

Q. How do you select the names of your characters?

A. It’s mostly intuition and what a name sounds like. Koral in Monsters Born and Made was always named Koral–it just clicked somehow. But other times it’s not easy, and then I spend time looking up names of actors or writers or

AUTHOR Q & A 30
BRODART LITTLEONE CATALOG

other kinds of artists around the world until I find something.

Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

A. The beginning of the process is always the most difficult for me. Despite objectively knowing that I will have to return and revise anyway, there’s a need to get things right in the first attempt, which makes it daunting to begin. It gets easier the more I write every time and yet, when I have to start a new project, I find myself in the same space that takes a lot of effort to get out of.

Q. What is your favorite part of the story in Monsters Born and Made?

A. My favorite part of the story is Koral’s resilience. Writing this character was a joy and a catharsis, and I really hope that Koral reaches whoever needs her, like she reached out to me while I was writing this story.

Tanvi Berwah grew up wanting to touch the stars and reach back in time. She graduated from the University of Delhi with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Literature of English and lives in India. This is her debut novel.

Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and These Violent Delights, this South Asian-inspired fantasy is a gripping debut about the power of the elite, the price of glory, and one girl's chance to change it all…if she can survive!

An interview with Andrea J. Loney author of the Abby in Orbit series

Q. How did you know you wanted to write this series?

A. The original idea for the Abby in Orbit series came from an editor at Albert Whitman and Company When I heard the pitch, something like – “Anne of Green Gables in space starring a distracted little Black girl who struggles with focus and microgravity” — I just knew I

Q. What kind of research did you do for this series? How long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

A. I’ve read dozens and dozens of articles, watch videos, and listen to lectures from experts in aerospace from space agencies all over the world. I’ve been fascinated by space travel since I was a

village of 100 people, including families and children. So, some aspects of Abby’s world on the OASIS ISS are actually based on my own life as a circus girl!

Q. How long have you been writing?

A. I’ve been writing children’s books professionally since about 2014, but I’ve written for theater, film, and television since I was in high school and well into my thirties. Before that I wrote little comic strips, poems, and puppet shows. It seems like I’ve always been writing!

had to write it. It sounded like so much fun. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

A. All of my books carry a central theme of “just be yourself, even if others don’t understand you at first.” But when it comes to the Abby in Orbit books, I hope that readers will also think about how different people can get along, celebrate each other’s individuality, and work together for a common cause. Because just like the residents of the OASIS International Space Station, the people of our planet are all in this together.

little kid. I remember spending every night watching the sky the summer that Skylab fell, viewing every space shuttle launch that I could, and being particularly interested in the saga of Space Station Mir. And as it turns out, Nivair Gabriel, my awesome editor for the Abby in Orbit series, used to be an aerospace engineer! So, we discuss the technical and historical aspects of the stories as well during the editing process.

Q. How have your personal experiences influenced your books?

A. After I got my MFA from NYU, I immediately ran away with the Big Apple Circus for a year. We travelled up and down the eastern seaboard, and it was the first time I’d experienced a work/life mobile

Q. Is there a specific message you want to share with readers of this series?
“I just knew I had to write it. It sounded like so much fun. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

An interview with Aya de León author of the Undercover Latina series

Q. What is the inspiration for this story?

A. The inspiration is threefold. First, I read the teen girl spy books by Robin Benway and Ally Carter, and wanted to bring girls of color to the genre. Second, I wanted to write about fighting racism for the middle grade crowd. Third, my mom is a lightskinned Latina who is often mistaken for white, and that has allowed her to overhear uncensored racism. Meanwhile, she has always fought racism, particularly anti-Black racism. I wanted to create a character based on my mom’s anti-racism commitments. I was excited when I realized I had written a book that could do all three.

Q. Is there a specific message you want to share?

A. That now is a time when we need to fight to make the world a more just and human place. The fight against racism is critical in every way. For example, the climate crisis is directly connected to racism. For decades, the climate crisis has been ravaging the African continent and Black communities in the US. As Varshini Prakash of the Sunrise Movement says, if Black Lives mattered, we would have solved the climate crisis after Hurricane Katrina. Now we are in a full-blown emergency, and it’s time for everyone to get on board for the fight to save our planet—

and that means learning to work together across racial differences and understand that our destinies are all interetwined. No one is disposable.

Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

A. Some people find it hard to face the blank page, but not me. The hardest part is when I’ve written my vision into a draft and I get feedback on it about what isn’t working. It’s like I’ve come to the end of a road in my mind and it’s hard to shift to see beyond my original vision. This is the place where I falter, where my mind goes blank. But I’ve learned to breathe and give it time. New ideas will eventually come into my head and I’ll be able to address the editorial comments. And the book is always better for having other people’s minds involved in shaping it. I love to be edited!

Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer?

A. I have wanted to write ever since I was a kid, and ever since I could remember. I have worked at it for decades, and it wasn’t always fun. But nowadays, it really is!

Q. What is your favorite part of this book?

A. I have several favorites, but right now, I’m really excited about

Triangulo universe. In the book, Andréa befriends the estranged son of a white nationalist terrorist. So she has to engage in his interests. One of them is a tabletop card game, Triangulo. Sort of like Magic: The Gathering, but with a 16th century origin story in the Caribbean of a Basque Witch, a Taino healer and a Yoruba priest who come together to create a magical spell so Black people can escape slavery. Which leads to a lineage of all sorts of superpowers in the past and present. I got inspired for this part at AfroComicCon. Although I write contemporary realistic fiction, I really enjoy writing sci-fi/ fantasy fandom, and aspire to one day publish comics or graphic novels in the Triangulo universe.

Aya de León is the Afro-Latina author of several suspense novels for adults, as well as The Mystery Woman in Room Three, an open-source online novel about two undocumented Dominican teens who uncover a kidnapping plot to stop the Green New Deal.
