In May, a group of publishers and librarians gathered in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for Brodart’s annual Publisher Summit. During a demonstration of collection development services available from Brodart, the conversation veered into Urban Fiction.

Urban Fiction, or Street Lit, is known for raw portrayals, highlighting themes of survival, family, and the struggle for identity. It is also in the midst of its own identity quest. Having been celebrated by its readers for its distinct tone and narrative, publishers are now wondering if the genre can evolve and still retain its appeal.

Many publishers have been considering changes to align with broader goals related to equity, inclusivity, and more authentic ‘own voices’ stories. At the same time, public librarians, particularly those who recall making cases for Urban Fiction as it is already represented, are holding fast, advocating for keeping Street Lit in its current form, preserving the experience for the readers they have championed all along.

Both groups are turning their eyes to the middle of the content spectrum — to their book vendors, and we’re listening.

Traditionally, Urban Fiction has been unapologetic and loved by its readers for it. That said, there are some publishers who worry about emphasizing stereotypes, fetishizing certain storylines or leaving behind many other stories in favor of strict genre norms. This dialogue is expanding, pushing imprints and their editors to seek narratives that emphasize stories of personal growth and redemption in urban settings too, those still deeply tied to urban life. This could result in a softer tone compared to the hardhitting realism that defined the genre, but may also reflect a fuller picture of urban life. There is also a push to bring more LGBTQ+ stories and female voices into the genre. By adapting, publishers hope to reflect the broader spectrum of experiences within urban communities.

Still many public librarians argue that Urban Fiction in its current form serves as an authentic representation of the lived experiences of plenty and provides for others the same satisfying escapism of high fantasy for those readers. Urban Fiction can provide visibility for those whose experiences are often overlooked in mainstream literature. As well, librarians in urban areas often point out that Urban Fiction resonates strongly with local communities, offering relatable stories that reflect their environment. By altering the genre too drastically, they worry about alienating the very readers who identify with or seek out that which has made Urban Fiction popular in public libraries.

Back to Williamsport: the stage was set, but not for conflict, rather for perspectives to be exchanged.

Despite their differences, both sides share a common goal: ensuring Urban Fiction remains relevant and powerful for readers today. Both represent equity-aims, those that hope to keep a collection available for all and those that seek to tell the stories of all.

While publishers consider evolving Urban Fiction to address broader aims, librarians will advocate for preserving the genre’s authenticity, at least in part. The debate between expanding the genre and maintaining its roots reflects broader debates about representation, cultural integrity, and readership engagement. Both are quests worth undertaking.
