Fundraising Is Everyone's Job…

For example, our building is clean and inviting, thanks to our hard-working facilities and maintenance staff – if it wasn’t, patrons would not feel comfortable coming here. They often see our facilities staff wiping down door handles and surfaces throughout the day to make this a safe environment.

Our front-line staff are always there to greet patrons with a smile, and answer questions. Their excellent customer service is what makes people want to come back, get a passport, or know that we are a valued resource always willing to help. Patrons know that when they are here, they are welcomed.

And I can’t forget about our talented programmers, who make learning fun for all ages in our community. From baby playtimes, to toddler and preschool storytimes, to school-age programming, tween and teen activities, and educational and social programs for adults, there isn’t a demographic of our community that can’t find something to do – or learn –at the library.

As a librarian and development director, it’s my job to ensure the future of this organization by securing funding from a variety of sources: grants, sponsorships, donors, bequests, gifts in kind, and more.

I often give tours of our incredible building to show the power of the library in action. Let’s face it – there’s no better selling point about the value of the library than seeing a child light up with joy at a new book, an adult applying for a job on a public access computer, a teen getting creative with our Lego wall, or a family engaging in a Storytime program.

One of the most rewarding things I often hear patrons say is, “I wish this teen space was here when I was younger,” “I love how much the library has changed,” or, my personal favorite, “The library is such a gem in the community.”

Behind the scenes, you can hear me tell our board and staff that “fundraising is everyone’s job.” Imagine the look they give me when they hear that! But as any development director will tell you, fundraising is about STORYTELLING. And I can’t tell a great story about the impact of our library without the support of all staff members.

But the “behind-the-scenes” staff, such as technical services, business office, human resources, and, of course, the executive director, are all there to make sure the books are cataloged properly, the bills are paid, our financials are audited each year, the state reporting is done accurately and efficiently, and the board and community are kept up-to-date on our happenings. All of this work makes it possible for me to focus on finding library stories to tell that will hopefully compel community members to share their time, talent, or treasures with the library.

So the next time a development staff member asks you for the name of a family or patron who might be interested in being featured in a library story, remember that we are not just asking you “to do one more thing” – we are truly interested in sharing the best news about our library in the words of the people who use us, and we know that the staff are the ones who know our patrons best.

And that is why library fundraising is everyone’s job.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT

Tell Me More

An interview with Bruce Bortz of Bancroft Press

Q: People know Bancroft Press as a top indie from Baltimore during the past 30 years. Tell us about the recent move to L.A. and how it’s worked out for you.

A: Our ability to sell to Hollywood has always been one of our points of distinction. From Baltimore, we sold to the late-great Mace Neufeld (The Samaritan), Showtime (Live by the Sword), Barry Levinson (Lenny, Lefty, and the Chancellor), Mel Gibson (Those Who Trespass), Michael Sullivan (For Whom the Minivan Rolls, etc.), and others. Now that we’re in L.A., we’re devoting more time and resources to Hollywood. Being close to producers and established screenwriters has already paid off for Peter Mehlman’s It Won’t Always Be This Great.

There’s a big benefit of having an eclectic catalogue which consists of both fiction and non-fiction. A superstar film-tv agency, Storied Media Group, has agreed to take on about sixteen of our other properties. This fall, they sold one

(Kevin Kelly’s great football/Mafia memoir Both Sides of the Line) to Village Roadshow.

Q: Two of your top titles this fall came to you late last year and you nonetheless resolved to get both out quickly. Why?

A: I couldn’t resist. Sondheim & Me by Paul Salsini is a fabulous memoir about musical theater’s greatest composer and lyricist. Paul started and ran The Sondheim Review for ten years and, in a special and truly unique way, got to know the musical genius we refer to by just his last name. Paul saw sides of Sondheim that many others did not.

Q: You seem to be publishing more titles this fall than normal. What happened?

A: I postponed a number of titles because of the pandemic, so there are, in effect, eight titles just this fall when normally we’d publish four to six a year!

16 BRODART ONE CATALOG

The other latecomer to the list is Daisy, which is The Great Gatsby as told by Daisy Buchanan. To describe it, I often use the shorthand “a feminist Gatsby.” It could be a great school companion to Gatsby itself.

formative years for him. Every high school kid today, especially those suffering mental health woes, will relate to the JFK in this book.

Q: Throughout your 30-plus years of publishing, you seem to have maintained your interest in YA fiction.

A: I experienced early success and couldn’t stop. My first YA, The Reappearance of Sam Webber, won the ALA’s Alex award, and remains what the ALA calls one of the top books on school bullying. My latest YA, JFK & the Muckers of Choate, is a startling, hilarious, and poignant telling of Kennedy’s real-life prep school experience. It’s a side of JFK that most people know nothing about, but they were extremely

Q: You say you publish what you like, regardless of genre. True?

A: Take a gander at Though the Earth Gives Way, the vividly stunning and disturbing novel by Pulitzer-winner Mark S. Johnson about a man seeking Midwestern sanctuary after a polar ice cap meltdown. The other fall titles are quite different. I have two great thrillers—Dissection and Must Read Well; a hugely entertaining history of the Wild West, Steve Wiegand’s 1876: Year of the Gun, recently excerpted in American Heritage Magazine and soon to be on C-Span’s “About Books;” a terrific memoir that I believe will be a big pick as a graduation gift, Robert Kanigel’s Young Man, Muddled; John Winn Miller’s fabulous WWII maritime thriller The Hunt for the Peggy C for military history buffs; and a very special spiritual practice book, Rohini Ralby’s Living the Practice: The Way of Love.

For his continuing obsession with book publishing, Publisher Bruce Bortz blames famed writer/movie director Barry Levinson— Levinson optioned Bancroft’s very first book, Lenny, Lefty, and the Chancellor by C. Fraser Smith in 1992.

Since 1992, Bancroft Press has been a general interest trade book publisher operating under the slogan of “books that enlighten.” It began in Baltimore, but recently moved to Los Angeles.
