6 AUTHOR Q & A

Tell Me

More An interview with Meg Medina author of She Persisted: Sonia Sotomayor

Q. What is the inspiration for writing She Persisted: Sonia Sotomayor? A. Mostly, the subject of the book herself! Sonia Sotomayor is a towering figure for women in the Latinx community. She is our hero, our example of the highest achievements. To have the opportunity to bring her to life was a gift. I also felt inspired by joining the “persisterhood” of my contemporaries who are authoring this series. These are all accomplished women in their own right, so it felt like an honor to work alongside them. Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. I liked learning about Justice Sotomayor’s childhood the best, maybe for selfish reasons. It was reminiscent of my own upbringing in Queens, so I could immediately relate to the sprawling family, to the B R O D A R T L I T E L I T T L E O N E C ATA L O G

impact of economic need, to the disconnected feelings from school at times. I think her resilience was just so evident there, beginning in the moment when she volunteered to give herself insulin shots. Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? A. Every book is different, but regardless of whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, some degree of research is required to make sure you’re getting details right. This is my first experience writing non-fiction, so in my nervousness, I read everything I could get my hands on about the Justice, beginning with her beautiful “Sonia Sotomayor is a towering figure for women in the Latinx community. She is our hero, our example of the highest achievements.”

memoir, My Beloved World. I read it three times, filling it with so many sticky notes that it grew into a fat treasure chest of quotes and scenes to draw from. Q. Is there a specific message you want to share with readers of She Persisted: Sonia Sotomayor? A. The important message of Sonia Sotomayor’s achievements is that she tapped into her inner light, regardless of adversity. She built strength even from the difficult circumstances that she faced. She allowed her heritage and her experiences – good and bad – to inform how she moved through the world and how she would later come to understand justice. All kids have an inner light, and I hope this book gives them a moment to reflect on the things they love to, on their own gifts to follow. It’s passion and persistence that will get them far.

7

“ There were no examples of writers in my immediate community, so it took a while to be able to imagine that for myself.” I had never written a chapter book before, so I spent some time studying the form, too, which is vastly different than middle grade novels. I had to think about sentence length and vocabulary. In a new way. I had to stick to the

facts and not take liberties with reinventing her the way I can do with fictionalized characters. I had to think about how to explain difficult concepts, like the Constitution, simply. I had to make decisions about how to talk about hard circumstances with children who are young readers. Honestly, I felt as though I learned just as much about writing as I did about Justice Sotomayor while composing this work. Q. When did you know you wanted to write a book? A. Since childhood, I’ve been a person who loved writing and reading. I loved hearing the stories my tías and abuelas shared with me about their lives in Cuba. It just took a while for me to be brave enough to try to make a career out of it. There were no examples of writers in my immediate community, so it took a while to be able to imagine that for myself. I was 40 years old before I started trying in earnest. Q. Who are some of your favorite writers? Have any of them inspired your writing? If so, how? A. I’m going to point to my persisters, here, with a special shout out to Renée Watson. We both write across age groups, and we also both use our work for the larger issue of helping kids find their voice and seek justice. She is a good friend, too, and someone whose work and life I look to for inspiration.

“I had to make decisions about how to talk about hard circumstances with children who are young readers.” Q. What do you like to do when you aren’t writing? A. These days I do quite a lot of walking – about two-and-a-half miles a day. It helps clear my head and gives me time to work out book issues while I’m taking care of my body. It’s one of the habits that I hope lingers after we all get our lives back on track after the pandemic.

AUTHOR Q & A

Q. What is your writing process like? A. Well, I immersed myself in research and kept marking places in the official record that would resonate with children between the ages of 6 and 9. I was on the hunt for the parts of Justice Sotomayor’s life that would be relatable to them, the parts that would demystify her and make her feel accessible.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT

Thorndike Press

1. Tell us a little about your role. I have the best job in the world as I get to preview upcoming titles from all of the major publishing houses. I work with an amazing editorial and production team, sales consultants, and marketing colleagues who all believe strongly in the format we’re putting into readers’ hands. We’re a division of the larger Gale and Cengage corporation, that is dedicated to lifelong learning. Some folks (you know who you are – my fellow book-people), might argue its a tough job in terms of having to narrow down and decide which of all these wonderful books we will license for large print editions. They’d be right! We have great relationships with subsidiary rights contacts at various imprints. It’s also been nice to hear support from authors who understand the value of large print.

2. What do you look for when selecting titles to publish in large print?

Bonnie Simcock —

Manager, Acquisitions Thorndike Press from Gale

As a parent and former Title I instructor, I am always looking for books I think will spark the interest of young readers and be relevant in some way to their experiences.

There’s no denying that certain genres remain highly entertaining such as fantasy and rom-com. But I also think realistic fiction with themes surrounding resilience, self-confidence, friendship, and community help bridge understanding and connections. I pay a lot of attention to trends in sales, trade reviews, curriculum-friendly content and award winners.

Watch how large print can make a difference for a young reader. 3. Why should children’s

librarians offer large print? Large print is not just for “old” people or those with vision impairment. These days we all have screen fatigue, so large print is a more comfortable format. There’s also science behind the impact it can have on readers who struggle with decoding or processing. A recent research project found readers who were exposed to large print enjoyed the experience more. The format gave a boost to their overall confidence and comprehension.

4. What title(s) do you consider collection must-haves?

All of our titles! I really hate to play favorites. We have many contemporary classics and award winners; this year, I would say every library should have a copy of: • When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller • Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley • Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds & Ibram X. Kendi

5. What’s next for Thorndike Press?

We continue to add to our list of 650+ middle grade and young adult large print editions. We are adding more memoirs, titles by BIPOC authors with protagonists who are representative of how our world actually looks and feels. These titles dare to tread into emotional topics in an honest way – not many of these types of titles did when I was young. Young readers experience depth of emotion and true wonder about the world; they also deserve titles that are elegant but approachable, complex, and thrilling. SPRING 2021 | ISSUE 01
