Branching Out to Offer More There has been so much written about libraries and the pandemic, how public libraries adapted to serving their communities during a time when our doors were closed to in-house programming. There was a great deal of trial and error, while libraries were forced to play catch up with their technological capabilities. This learning curve opened up the doors to new types of program models and collaborations.

by Ellen E. McTyre —

Head of Youth Services at Bronxville Public Library, New York

Ellen has served as a youth librarian for over 18 years. She was brought in during the pandemic to lead the Youth Services department of the Bronxville Library in Westchester County, NY. She absolutely loves the creativity of working with children and teens in a public library setting.

The Westchester Library System is a cooperative of 38 libraries scattered throughout Westchester County, New York, stretching from Bronxville through North Salem. Pre-pandemic, most neighboring libraries worked independently of one another, causing many to compete for an audience. One good thing that has come out of this “post-pandemic” era is that public library programming is no longer limited to one’s area. Here in the Youth Services department of the Bronxville Public Library, we have expanded our program schedule to include outside organizations as well as other libraries within the Westchester Library System. With a few minor upgrades in our auditorium, we have been able to offer our patrons a variety of programs from all over Westchester and the country. For example, in addition to our regular storytimes and craft programs, we offer musical performers and storytellers through Live on the Big Screen. This is a hybrid program where children and their caregivers can come into the library and enjoy Turtle Dance Music 1, autism-friendly shows from New Jersey, or basic sign language and stories with Connecticut’s Two Right Feet 2; and if patrons can't make it in, no problem, they can log on from anywhere that has an internet connection. Grade school students were treated to a special Panda Day celebration complete with stories, crafts, and the Smithsonian Zoo’s Live Panda Cam 3 from Washington D.C. Bronxville has also been able to reach a wider teen audience thanks to collaboration and the sharing of a variety of online events. These have included workshops on everything from cultural dance and cooking to education, college, and “life beyond high school.” The Tween/Teen DIY on-demand monthly instructional video series has been wildly popular; past topics included virtual magic and how to sew workshops 4. Bronxville Library’s teen summer creative writing series reached participants who were vacationing in Maine and visiting South America. Libraries are no longer limited to their backyards. The pandemic has awoken a new interest in what library systems have to offer, and how we have all had to adapt, both at home and throughout our neighborhoods. Public libraries hold intrinsic value in helping to connect our communities and inspire people with many diverse interests. Oh, and the best part—membership is free! 1

17 PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT

Bellwether Media For over 15 years, Bellwether Media has published premium series nonfiction for beginning and struggling readers. Based in the Twin Cities, the company lives out its mission to create lifelong readers by making books that spark curiosity and encourage children to learn about their world.

What are Bellwether’s areas of expertise? I sometimes refer to Bellwether, for lack of a better term, as a boutique publisher—we only publish series nonfiction, have a limited title count per year, and editors and designers make up two-thirds of our staff. We are a quality over quantity publisher, and our books reflect that approach; they are visually stunning and packed with content on high-interest subjects—perfect for beginning and struggling readers, two groups I believe we serve very well.

What are Bellwether’s most popular imprints?

Derek Zobel — President

Tell us about your history with Bellwether. When did you start? What do you enjoy about the company? I was hired as an editor at Bellwether in 2007. I was the third employee and immediately fell in love with creating books for kids. After six years on the production team at Bellwether, I went to business school and then came back to run the business in 2016. I love many things about working at Bellwether: the small, dedicated team, the commitment to a mission of literacy, and that the focus has always been on the true end customer, the reader.

What we call the Blastoff! Universe contains our leveled reading imprints. It starts with Blastoff! Beginners, intended for kindergartners, moves on to Blastoff! Readers for kids in first grade through third grade, and ends with our fourth-grade imprint, Blastoff! Discovery. Torque and Epic are our two Hi/Lo imprints that target reluctant and struggling readers. Torque has a third grade reading level and Epic has a second grade reading level. Both use mature designs and high-interest subjects to attract kids and get them reading.

How do Bellwether books stand apart from other books on the shelf? Reviews of our books call out the excellent design and content. We have also maintained consistent reading levels within imprints throughout our history; you can pick up a book that I worked on 10 or 12 years ago and it will read at the same level as a newly published book. This consistency has earned the trust of librarians, to the

point that many of them create special “Blastoff! Readers” sections in their libraries. They know Bellwether books will circulate and we are often told they cannot keep our books on their shelves.

Why focus on beginning and struggling readers? Bellwether wants children to read. Period. Literacy is a critical variable to a child’s future success. We want beginning readers fall in love with books the first time they pick one up. If they have access to engaging books on subjects that pique their curiosity, they are more likely to continue reading, improve their skills, and succeed. For reluctant and struggling readers, we strive to reignite their curiosity in books to better prepare them for academic success. I am lucky enough to say I love what I do because I know Bellwether’s books are encouraging kids to read.

Derek Zobel, the President of Bellwether Media, is passionate about education and literacy. In addition to his work at Bellwether, he volunteers at local schools and enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children.

Q. What is the inspiration for this story? A. I was inspired by the #SAYHERNAME movement. There’s a lot of pressure and expectations put on Black girls and women to protest police brutality but when the victim is a Black girl or woman, the type of support you see is completely different.

of victims of police brutality to grieve and heal after the world has turned its back on them.

Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? A . I usually write about topics I already have some firsthand knowledge of so I get started drafting right away. But once I get to a scene that requires specific knowledge that I don’t have, then I’ll pause and research. For example, there’s a scene where the characters are taking a bus route that I’ve never been on. Luckily, YouTube had a video where a vlogger recorded their entire ride on this particular route. It seems small but the little details really help with authenticity.

Q. How do you select the names of your characters? A . I google ‘rare and unusual baby When her sister is killed by a police officer, Beau fights to clear her sister's name in this debut YA novel about sisterhood, power, and finding your voice in the face of tragedy.

Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer? A. Yes, at least since the first grade. There was short time in middle school I considered being an artist but it never stuck. I was really quiet growing up but I observed everything around me and I had all of these different thoughts and ideas but no one to tell them to. Writing has always been a way for me to say exactly what’s on my mind.

AUTHOR Q & A

Tell Me

More

An interview with Christina Soontornvat Author of The Last Mapmaker

Q. What is the inspiration for this story? A . I have always been someone who loved maps: the mystery, the promise, the adventure implied. When I started to create Sai’s character: someone who is an apprentice to a celebrated mapmaker, she made me want to explore themes of where we have been vs. where we are headed. How are those things connected? It made me want to create a whole cast of characters who were either running away from something, or running towards something they thought they desperately needed. But also, if you’re going to write a book centered on maps, you can’t escape the history of imperialism and colonization that has touched nearly every shore of our globe. Sai’s employer is on a mission to “discover” a new continent, so I definitely wanted to unpack what that

really means. There is also a dragon in the story. Because every story should have a dragon.

Q. Is there a specific message you want to share? A . A big theme explored in this book is dealing with mistakes: both our own and the mistakes of others. One big takeaway is that we can never go into the past and change anything. Not even our worst mistakes. But we can control the course of our future. We can change what we do next.

Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? A . I think many readers would be surprised how much research fantasy authors do! For this book, I did a lot of research about the history of mapmaking and sailing ships. Even though Mangkon is a fictional kingdom and the time period is ambiguous, I wanted to make sure the mechanics of the ship felt real. To do that, I had to read so many books about sailing vessels and how they were built 200 years ago. Only a fraction of the information made it into the actual book, but hopefully it makes the world feel more realistic!

Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

so hard to know if you’re doing it right when you are the author and you know how everything ends! My editor and I worked very hard to make sure that there were hints throughout the book, but everything felt like a surprise when it was finally revealed. Hopefully we got it right!

Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. Sai’s employer, the mapmaker Paiyoon, has a magical eyeglass. When he looks through it, he can see the world as it truly is (including people and their true intentions). At one point in the story you learn that the eyeglass may actually be made from the nictitating membrane (second eyelid) of a sea dragon. I just really loved coming up with that detail!

Christina Soontornvat is an award-winning author, engineer, and STEM educator. A Wish in the Dark, and All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team were both named 2021 Newbery Honor Books.

A . For this book, I wanted there to be lots of plot twists and surprises. It’s SPRING 2022 | ISSUE 01
