AUTHOR Q & A

Tell Me

More An interview with Zion Clark Author of Zion Unmatched

Q. What was the inspiration for

Q. Did you have any athlete role

A. Parts of my story had already

A. Anderson Silva and

been told – on Netflix, ESPN, Ellen DeGeneres – and I was flattered to receive that attention. But my life story has far more layers, and is far richer, than what has previously been reported. I reached a point in my life when I wanted to share my story. I wanted people to know the whole journey.

Q. Is there a specific message you want to share with young readers that might learn your story for the first time with Zion Unmatched?

A. Yes. The message is do

not get discouraged and do not give in. There is so much crazy stuff going on the world right now. But look at me: From the day I was born, people doubted me, just because I didn’t have legs. And I’ve had many low points along the way. But I didn’t give up. I kept working. I kept dreaming. I’ve already exceeded all expectations, and I’m just getting started. I want young readers to know that if I can do it, so can they! Zion Clark is an elite athlete, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur. Zion Clark lives in Los Angeles.

Q. Do you have any favorite

authors or books that you return to reading or closely follow?

A. I loved Rick Riordan’s Percy

Jackson series, and I also loved Lord of the Rings. 4

models growing up?

Jordan Burroughs, both of whom I’ve been privileged to meet – they are larger-than-life on the screen, but even more impressive in person.

Q. What are your goals for the Paralympics in 2021?

A. Make the team, win the Gold, and give it to my mom.

Q. What is your writing process like?

A. I spend a lot of time with

my coauthor and collaborator, Jim Hirsch (who’s written biographies of Willie Mays and Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, among many other books). Jim asks me questions that force me think about my life in new ways. He challenges me, which is good. He’s also interviewed many of my relatives, teammates, coaches, and friends, so I’ve learned things about my life that I didn’t even know.

Q. Can you share any

information with readers about your next publishing project?

A. This project involves three books – the picture book, a full-length memoir, and a children’s book. It’s an unbelievable opportunity to reach all audiences.

They are open to all, and provide essential services to help people and neighborhoods thrive. From internet access and homework help, to story times and English as a Second Language programs, libraries offer vital resources to address community needs, and they are a place where the community gathers.
