A service to provide job opportunity for uneducated women

Chapter I: Description of the Service

What is the Service? çÜp(m)adam is a non-profit organization, started in August 2008 as an experimental project in Western Turkey, addressing the issues of women’s employment and the importance of recycling/reusing. The name, which translates as "garbage ladies", stands as a symbol of taking garbage and turning it into something useful, fashionable and fun. It aims to give a chance to unemployed, uneducated, dependent women to produce something in return for income, something of which they were previously deprived and change their second-class status while simultaneously contributing to the betterment of the environment. With assistance from Sabanci University and Unilever Turkey, since its foundation 250 women (in Ayvalik, Diyarbakir and Istanbul), a less fortunate group of Turkish women who have never earned a living in their lifetimes, contributed to the project. These 250 women have produced 3000 wrapper bags in the last 3 years, in which 2000 were sold in more than 25 shops that customers purchase a fun and useful product while putting their money to a good cause.

What are the values?

The founders of the organization started to their journey with the idea of making a change for the women and the environment. Firstly, 3 out of 4 women in Turkey are currently unemployed, lack sufficient social security and are dependent, financially and physically, on their husbands, fathers and sons. Secondly, 70 tons of trash is produced in İstanbul every ten minutes and a very small rate is being recycled/reused due to insufficient infrastructure and low levels of awareness. The organization has three aims for the future; increasing the number of selling channels, enriching the variety of the products and opening new workshop around the country due to employ more women and contribute to the recycling. Gaining support from larger organizations is the main concern of çÜp(m)adam, for once this is achieved the project will become a fast growing industry with plenty of room for more women to join and utilize their talents.

How does the service works?

The service takes start with opening a workshop which offers the workshop also as a studio/office to work and socialize for the ladies while continuing to give educational support. The organizators establishes connections via web, phone or meetings to find material sources. The raw materials are provided by donations of some factories' ‘clean garbage’ or some individuals' recyclable trash. If needed they are processed/cleaned before using. Generally unemployed, uneducated, dependent women of the town where workshop is located – participates classes to learn about items’ production. According to their preferences the ‘garbage ladies’ can continue to produce the items either at home or in the atelier by using the material collected. The items produced are sent to the foundation and sold on the website or in contracted shops which provides a space for the products to present them to the customers. While the organization gets profit just for some expenses to stay alive and pays rest of the money to the ‘garbage ladies’ who takes a share for each piece that is sold.

Volunteer raw material providers are either some companies (like Unilever) who donates their ‘clean garbage’ (surplus, flawed packages) or the individuals who send their recyclable trash to the organization. Commercial material providers are the firms that organization buys some additional materials (like chains, zippers). The main users are the garbage ladies who participate in workshops, producing the pieces and getting an income in return for it.
