The history of the Engelsburg Around 1125 It is not certain whether the Engelsburg was a hospital at this time, when it was commonly known as „Elendsherberge“ (misery harborage) or „Elendsburg“ (misery castle). It was supposedly founded by a priest named Erkenknecht. Experts are agreed, however, that the Steinhaus is the oldest of it ́s kind in Germany.
1383 documentary reference to the „Engelsburg”. 1400 Johann von Allenblumen builds a house names it „Zur Engelsburg” (angels ́ castle). Today his coat of arms still adorns the oldest preserved gate in Erfurt.
1514 Dr. med. Georg Sturz acquires the premises. He is one of the richest citizens of Erfurt and rector of the university from 1516 to 1526. Sturz is known as a patron of the Erfurt humanists.
1515 The philosophers and humanists Cortus Rubianus and Ulrich von Hutten, both associated with
the Engelsburg, write their famous „Dunkelmännerbriefe“ (obscurantist letters) - the greatest satire in German literature - and erect an immortal monument to the Erfurts humanists.
1537 Martin Luther is sojourning Dr. med. Georg Sturz at Engelsburg in case of a disease. 1595 The bell founder Eckart Kuchen acquires the „Schwarze Ross“ (black steed). The former Humanistenerker (humanist corner) is also located in this building.
1763 The Belgian merchant Levinus van Wynendael acquires several properties on the Engelsburg complex and in 1767 establishes a tobacco shop with one of the first tobacco mills in Germany.
1776 Ernst Gottlob Hoffmann takes over the belgium tobacco shop and merges in 1788 with his associate Friedrich Triebel to a soon in Germany well known company „Hoffmann & Triebel”.
1936/37 The tobacco business is failing. At the same time, Erfurt ́ municipal building commission finds that all Engelsburg buildings are in unsound condition, but should be preserved due to their cultural and historical significance.
1952 The house „Zur Engelsburg“ is demolished. 1965 The town counsil and the school of medicine draw up a contract regarding utilization of the site. 1968 The medieval cellar and the top floor are renovated as a student club, the half-timbering is exposed. The students put in 6.426 hours of voluntary work. On 4 march 1968 the „Studentenklub Engelsburg” is opened by the prorector of student affairs, Prof. Dr. med. habil. Panzram.
1990 The „Studentenclub Engelsburg” becomes a registered association.
1993 The medicinical school of Erfurt, hitherto responsible for the „Studentenclub Engelsburg”, is closed.
1994 A second association will be founded: „Förderverein Humanistenstätte Engelsburg e.V.“. The mission: to pursue the redeveloping the „Engelsburg“ and to cherish the humanistic tradition.
1996 In a decision of the town counsil (33-96), Erfurt resoves to gradual renovate the entire Engels-
burg complex. The Studentenclub from now on both the name „Studentenzentrum Engelsburg e.V.“ and leads the development of the house continued to be a cultural center and starting point of many young people.
1997 bis 2000 Extensive reconstructions and almost complete restoration of the Engelsburg complex,
except for the „Bohlenstube” (plank room) in the humanist ́ corner. The association is now named „Studentenzentrum Engelsburg e.V.” and carries on the development of the site as a cultural centre and meeting place for young people.
1999 The Café DuckDich is re-consecrated after restoration. Here since held events of all kinds. The cafe takes its name from a large bar that runs across the entire room and the guest forces to the head retraction.
2000 In the barn the ISIZ (International Student Information Centre) and dormitory rooms for students arise.
2000 In December, the restaurant „Steinhaus“ opens with its beer garden for up to 300 guests. 2005 Founding of the Society „Engelsburg- die Alte(N) e.V.“ by former medical students and club mem-
bers from the years 1968 to 1994, work up with the goal of the history of the medical academy and the student club.
2008 At Erfurt Hauptbahnhof high school shop „WIESEL“ is opened as a joint project with the Univer-
sity of Erfurt, University of Applied Sciences Erfurt, Studentenwerk Thüringen and the city of Erfurt, under the auspices of the Studentenzentrum.
2010 The high school shop moves from the central station to the Engelsburg and with a slightly different approach in the future under the slogan “WIESEL - alles rund ums Studium (all about studying)” be mainly used for the accompaniment of the students of the universities of Erfurt active.
2011 The Studentenzentrum is repeatedly awarded as Ökoprofit company and is member of the Sustainability Agreement Thuringia.
2012 The Studentenzentrum developed its offerings further towards sustainability and regionality and this brings, among other things with this menu for expression.
