HEN we talk about creativity and exquisiteness, the only name that clicks our mind is Hassan Sheryar Yasin. The king of couture, the mastermind behind all the beautiful designs that light up the ramp and above all a maestro of fashion HSY has it all. He has been the part of fashion planet for last 20 years and is one of the key players in this industry. As a person he is very humble and generous but when it comes to work he is highly professional. His design philosophy is to make timeless elegant clothes. For him, fashion is the sense of living. It’s not only about the dress, but it’s about you and what you live with. He has specialised in couture and is best known for combining contemporary silhouettes with traditional techniques of old. He is not afraid to take risks when it comes to designing. The usage of unconventional embellishment techniques with traditional thread work is his signature mark in his bridals. As a choreographer, from the conceptualization, to the music, to the rehearsal, he puts in hours of hard work for making fashion shows successful. Moreover he runs an event management company and is the Pakistan brand ambassador for international brands such as ToyWatch, Ponds and Porsche. His brand HSY has also formed cross collaborations with local brands such as Stoneage, Bareeze and YOCA. HSY is successfully running his outlets all over the world, and is endowed with design mania. Soon he will also be opening his first ever retail outlet at Galleria Mall in Lahore. In an interview with Ebuzz, HSY talked about his style, designing experience, chorography and much more. Here are some excerpts of the interview: You are one of the pioneers of Pakistani fashion industry and over the decades you must have witnessed the evolution of Pakistan fashion, can you tell us about how you own style has evolved with the changes in the industry? Fashion is something which evolves with time and after a certain time period repeats itself. As far as my own style and designs are concern, they are always influenced by international trends with a fusion with our won rich culture. I like the idea of fusing cultures and fashion eras. What does HSY signature represents?

www.ebuzztoday.com

Expression of Individuality, celebration of fashion, timeless elegance and fusion of cultures. You have experience designing in all the different genres of Pakistani fashion from bridal to prêt, luxury prêt and lawn. Can you tell us how the creative process differs for each and which one you find more challenging? I think that all fortes are difficult and challenging in their own right. Hence the creative process also differs in each field. Bridals are challenging because they involve customizations and high frequency of redo’s and attention to the smallest details. Also, In the case of bridals, brides all around the world want to look perfect on their big day and APR-MAY, 2014

elements but a designer should be able to think out of the box. It’s not just about structure, if the mind thinks freely, one can experiment with colours, cuts, adding in accessories and motives. I also feel that just as every bride is unique, her bridal wear is also exclusive.

hence pay a lot of attention to the smallest things. Pret and Luxury Pret are arduous because as a designer you need to be; creative, embedded the latest trends and maintain your signature label’s style all at the same time. I have done lawn once only, unfortunately it didn’t receive a great response. Going forward, I think I’ll venture into lawn again. What is your signature mark that is common in bridal? The use of bright colours and extremely delicate and traditional thread work. What are the bridal trends that you see in year 2014? This year in bridal trends, we will be focusing on traditional age old embroidery techniques which will be used to create intricate surface textures on chiffon, silk and organza bases. Interesting layering paired with traditional silhouettes will give bridal outfits a modern look. Hemlines will vary from long to short. People say it’s harder to create bridal couture due to limitations of structure and traditional elements? What do you think? It is more difficult to design bridals than high fashion luxury prêt? I would beg to differ here. Yes, there is a limitation of structure and traditional EBUZZ

As a fashion designer I have learnt that you can’t be favoured by patrons all the time. Sometimes people accept and understand your design sensibilities and sometimes they don’t and that’s perfectly fine.

Can you describe the process from inspiration to execution? Inspiration comes from many fronts; it could be a place I visited, a book I read, early year memories or something like a person I look up to in life. The next phase involves in chalking/sketching the concept into wearable pieces, this is the most challenging part; decisions have to be made on the colours, cuts, fabrics and theme of the collection. We then make a dummy collection, test it on models, identify places for improvements and Nitti gritty like fitting et al. Lately for the dummy collection, we have also been extensively using technology. We than move to making a full and final collection for the ramp The themes of your design collection are never mainstream and depict your unique sense of style. What is your thought process when you decide a theme for your collection? There are no and should not be any boundaries to creativity especially in fashion. I have always been known to experiment and try out new things, things which other people never even think of doing. You have a name in couture; prêt and luxury prêt, however there are speculations that your lawn collection did not work so well, what is the reason behind that? To be honest, yes it didn’t do that well at that time. As a fashion designer I have learnt that you can’t be favoured by patrons all the time. Sometimes people

accept and understand your design sensibilities and sometimes they don’t and that’s perfectly fine.

I think it’s the hard work, dedication and persistent of myself and my team.

Talking about chorography, In Pakistan what flows do you see in this regard? I think over the last decade or so, choreography has seen new height in the country. Talking specifically about fashion choreography, I think people and agencies who are part of this industry have become more organized, professional and are embedding international concepts in local practices.

What are the three signs of beauty for you in a woman? Individuality, confidence and elegance.

What challenges or difficulties you had to face in chorography? When it comes to choreography, I suppose the biggest challenge is finding your dream team, people who share adhere to your vision of quality services.

Do you see style& intellectuality as related concepts? Yes very much, the former is weakened without the later.

What is the driving force behind your success and respected status?

What matters to you most as a fashion designer? Creativity How would you define fashion? Fashion for me is individuality magnified.

What are the key elements for you when designing a collection? Translating a though from your mind onto a piece of paper and finally showcasing it to the world on the ramp.

Who is your muse? I have more than one; Reema Khan, Tahira Syed and Mehreen Syed. Pakistan seems to be carving a path into the international market with the increase of fashion weeks being held abroad and growing retail presence, how does this translate into a larger scheme of things? What are some of the disadvantages that we need to overcome? I think on the macroeconomic side, this has significantly added to the increase in employment opputurnitues for the people of our country. At the moment, I feel that we as a country can only benefit from going international. Do you have any new projects in the pipeline? Yes I am doing PSFW 2014, BCW 2014 and so much more…

This exciting show was followed by models exhibiting artistic wear by Innaya. Inaaya is a pioneering concept in ethical fashion, combining classic inimitable techniques with artisanal production. Inaaya utilizes skilled workers to create unique, flawless fashion pieces and handmade goods which are now finding an audience globally with receptive customers, eager for differentiation, embracing the ‘one-of-akind-finds’ trend, especially in fashion, home goods and soft furnishings industries. DAY:3

Gul Ahmed

The Act culminated with a grand showing by Shamaeel Ansari. Shamaeel’s style focuses on magnificence and grandeur. While her couture is luxuriant and distinctly bordering on the regal, her new prêt is a cluster of price-sensitive high fashion that leaves a unique stamp of ingenuity on a mixture of fabrics. Her earlier flamboyance has been replaced with elegant mellowness with a sense of mystery.

Act one of Day 3 started with a bang with an eye-catching and funky collection by Tapulicious featuring Kamiar Rokni, HSY and Mohsin Ali. The ensembles were inspired by colourful and repetitive patterns of traditional ‘shamiana’ tents. The prints and bags were based on silk paintings and artistry of a famous Japanese artist, and Tapu’s aunt, Mariam Syedullah. Each print contained hundreds of miniscule photographs of Karachi that were put into artistic stitch by House of Kamiar Rokni. The second collection of Tapu featured Mondrian-style colour blocking that was crafted into garments by the very talented Mohsin Ali. The third and final selection was inspired by current trends with a monochromatic look at the animal world. Tapu used zebra and leopard prints layered alongside chevron stripes and kaleidoscopic colour creating a fresh look at an old classic. The vibrant collection of Tapulicious was followed by an elegant showcase by Maleeha C. Nasir’s label Daaman. Maleeha C. Nasir has been involved in the fashion business for over a decade.

Ali Xeeshan

She started modelling during her undergraduate days at LUMS. Maleeha took the plunge into designing in 2009 by launching her acclaimed ready-to-wear label “Daaman”. The third act of Show One was presented by Gul Ahmed, a household name that represents the retail textile industry of Pakistan. Over the years, Gul Ahmed has emerged as a complete solution for fashion and regular wear. The diversified brand encompasses everything under one umbrella including lawn prints, ‘khaddar’, chiffon, silk and designer lawn suits. Show one ended with Ali Xeeshan’s exquisite stitch-work that was based on conventional materials with unorthodox aesthetics. Ali Xeeshan is also renowned for his bridal couture

that circles around the ethnic background of Pakistan. The second show of Day Three started with an elegant collection by Wardha Saleem. Wardha Saleem is another prodigy produced by Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture who mastered the art of fashion and textile designing. Her intricate printed lawn designs and cuts have captured the interests of her clients from the very beginning of the brand. Mahin Hussain was next to show her talent to fashion gurus. Her collection was based on the poetry of the late Parveen Shakir. Mahin Hussain specializes in leather and canvas handbags. The designs were simple yet bold. The label boasts of a very patriotic line of canvas bags that featured quotes from Quaid-e-Azam

Mohammad Ali Jinnah and arresting lyrics from songs of Madam Noor Jehan. Upcoming and promising designer, Faraz Manan, carried forward the show with his lively collection based on western aesthetics with eastern sensibilities. The dresses were rooted in real world practicality while containing accents of experimentation. The grand finale was by the renowned fashion icon Nomi Ansari who showcased a magnificent collection. In under a decade, the Nomi Ansari brand has become one of the most sought-after labels in Pakistan. Nomi Ansari grabbed attention with his ultra-vibrant palette. His clothes were fun and funky, and at the same time had a distinctly ethnic touch that appealed to tastes from across the spectrum. It is an appeal that he has consistently maintained. His highly inventive colour combinations and detailed craftsmanship with intricate embellishments have become his signature style.

The Spring

2014

runway trends Trends are ever changing. New replaces the old. Making a list of resolutions is the easy part. Diet, exercise, donating for charity and general selfimprovement are all likely candidates for the pledges we make, in all sincerity, to ourselves at the end of each year. Checking off the items is a different story altogether. This year let’s add to the standard clichéd bullet points and invest in improving ourselves by making healthier and wiser fashion choices in 2014. Here are some promising declarations to choose from, but be warned some of them will require a strong will and staunch determination as it is easy to grow attached and comfortable in articles that should have been extinguished months ago. The party rules are changing: less hot mess and more chic crisp. Tuxedo-inspired outfits are so in for 2014 – think wide-legged pants and crisp tux jackets. Monochrome colors are in, of course with a pop of color. Prints will be all over the place – wording and psychedelic, digital and tribal prints. Tops, dresses, pants and even jackets – you’ll see all of them covered in prints. Forget about bandage dresses because fringe dresses and tops are making a huge come back. Cropped tops and jackets are replacing blazers and long tops – try higher waist bottoms so you can hide your navel.

chooridars. The ship has sailed on the days when you didn’t have to worry about matching pants or the cut of your trousers. For 2014 snap out of your stupor and replace them with tailored pencil cut ankle length trousers, attention to shape is crucial. On the plus side jumpsuits are here to stay for a while longer! Rather than stocking up on regular nondescript items, save up and invest on extraordinary timeless pieces. Be it a statement jacket, a pair of shoes, a handbag you’ve been dreaming of, an original tapestry or even a piece of furniture. For instance add a Shawl or a scarf as a fashion statement to your wardrobe. Let it be geometric and bold in patterns and full of spring colors.

You will notice the spring 2014 fashion will take a slight shift towards vibrant bursts of color, flowing material and flattering cuts. The palette will be more off inspired by the colors of nature that will emulate the crispness of Spring. The materials will be dominated not just by the fabric of Lawn but also by the use of Chiffons, Crepe, Silks, Nets and laces. If you haven’t received the memo yet, it is time to rid your closet of all your chooridar tights. They no doubt served you well during their hay day when anything from cotton to silk, and Eastern to Western could be paired with a set of catch all neutral stretchy EBUZZ

trends Throw on a chiffon or crepe jacket over the outfit with embellishments of pearl , threads and crystals, or simple printed pattern. A perfect handbag to go with your outfit which can add glamour to your look. Like, we witnessed some really good handbags showcased by Mahin Hussain in the Pakistan Fashion Week 2014. Add on hats to your fashion this season that never goes out of style and will help you refrain from the hot Sun. The collection of Nomi Ansari in Pakistan fashion week depicts the hat story both for the wardrobe of men and women. Use all those products you’ve been saving for the right occasion before they hit their expiry dates. Broaden your horizons and test drive new colors, shimmers, and shades for eyes, lips and cheeks. Don’t live in denial; if it’s time to invest in the right anti-aging creams for your skin type do it before it’s too late and remember to cleanse and wear plenty of sunscreen. Try and incorporate fun statement oversize ethnic rings and bracelets to your look. Other items to watch out for are printed scarves that might catch your eye or handbags or even desi pop footwear. Exercise your style muscles by picking out exotic pieces from seemingly ordinary pile. With the arrival of spring, be prepared to be bombarded with the lawn brigade. You will be tempted to give in to the undoubtedly beautiful avalanche of prints and colors that you think you absolutely need. But we suspect you’ve regretted going overboard on a truckload of suits in the past that you barely wore after seeing them become so common; limit yourself to a reasonable number for 2014. Lawn is essential for summer temperatures however, with the age of modern retail prêt there are many more available options, therefore try and restore balance to your summer wardrobe. Also add Chiffons and Crepe in your wardrobe to add versatility to your fashion. However, to cover up the solid tips for you this season here are the Fashion In’s and Out’s !

In’s: Cigarette pants, palazzos, net/sheer

fabrics, mix & match, handloom, jackets, boxy cuts and short shirts. Out’s: Sweeping hemlines (except for bridal gowns), matchy-matchy outfits, panels, volume, tights, chooridars, brooches. Goodluck to all the readers on making their fashion statements this season. Cheers!

Dreams Come True Dreaming to be the top model of Pakistan and having ambition to become a star, Saima Azhar set foot on Pakistani fashion industry in 2011. The gorgeous diva is one of the top Pakistani models who stuns with her sizzling looks and overwhelming confidence.

Saima Azhar started her career with Veet Miss Supermodel Contest in 2011 and was shortlisted among the top ten. The humble model says it was her sheer luck. “I never thought I would be a model. Moreover things and work are being repeated. HSY is one of the few whose work is appreciable and he seems to offer something new and special.” While talking about her modelling career, she states, “People think modelling is an easy job, but it is not. Seeing the fashionistas and how fabulously they dress up is literally a treat to the eyes! All these trends are an eye candy for all and much loved by everyone. We have compiled the fashion as well as lifestyle trends together for 2014! As 2013 saw us sporting inked thumbs after voting, craving for the Iphone 5S, watching Urdu-dubbed Turkish plays and taking a trip at Dolmen Mall and Centaurus necessity. There was this whole new outburst of frozen yogurt parlours that led to the opening of many such places, a whole line of res-

Politics was cool enough to be discussed in 2013 but that’s history now and we are so not in that political zone anymore! The terrible security situation led to many

Meanwhile, price hikes and inflation has us all digging through our closets for vintage items that can be re innovated into fresh ensembles. For hang outs, it’s great that we have new multiplexes to enjoy movies but security issues have made the beach a total ‘nay’ for many.

Movie Review

Total Siyappa Hilarious ride of the year Did this film start thinking it was a smart riff on ‘Aman Ki Asha’, a media-floated idea of amity between India and Pakistan? Because that’s how it begins, with the Pakistani Aman (Ali Zafar) being led in for a ‘moonh-dikhai’ to the house of the Indian bride Aisha’s home (Yami Gautam), in London. This is the same director who gave us such different films as ‘Shool’ and the underrated ‘Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’, and you would think some of that surety would be transferred to this new venture. and he lived up to the expectations.

Aman (Ali Zafar) is a Muslim musician. Asha (Yaami Gautam) a Hindu working in broadcast journalism. But the Punjabis, settled in London, are in love. The hurdle in their love story is that he is from Pakistan and she from India. It’s time for Aman to meet Asha’s parents. He isn’t totally enthused as his day started off on a wrong note. A cop, a terrible impersonator of Mr Bean, arrests him for trying to bomb the city. It doesn’t help that Asha has a seriously dysfunctional family who are clueless that he is a citizen of India’s favourite worst enemy. And so begin a series of follies which amuse the audience till www.ebuzztoday.com

the end of the movie. Aisha’s Indian family comprises an irrepressible Punjabi mom (Kirron Kher), who says ‘phittey moonh’, and ‘hai, hai siyappa’ at regular intervals just in case we forget which film we are in. An older sister (Sara Khan), living apart from her ‘kanjoos’ husband, with her moppet who is part cute part annoying. A younger brother with a thing against ‘Pakis’. A grandfather (V M Badola) who lies in bed and plays with knives, and a largely absent father (Anupam Kher) who pops up finally in the strangest places, including a hooker’s van. It is the most hilarious ride of the year but however the flaw has been seen in the most stretched situations of the movie that was unnecessary. Zafar’s only job is to look befuddled, which he manages quite well. Gautam belies the promise she had held out in her debut ‘Vicky Donor’. The only watchable people in the film are Kirron Kher, who can probably do this role with her eyes closed but still ingests zest in it, and Sara Khan, who has a nice, wicked edge to the ‘badi behen’ part. A spat between the subcontinental lovers, which involves a rueful and finally funny mention of Shahid Afridi is nice.

Poor Anupam Kher, getting to play opposite his real-life wife as reel spouse, comes off so embarrassingly, he should wipe this film off his list: I would, if I were made to wander about London in my long johns in a daze. Almost all characters in Total Siyappa are caricatures. There’s Anupam Kher, the family’s patriarch, who is reduced to walk through the streets of London dressed in thermals. His sole job here is to mistake a prostitute for his wife and get a lap dance. Kirron Kher, his reel and real-life wife, is more than happy to yet again essay the role of a boisterous, annoying, OTT Punjabi woman. Only this time she is on anti-depressants and shocked to learn that her daughter has brought a Pakistani boy home. Asha’s crazy brother and her self-absorbed sister add nothing of interest to the proceedings. Only Zafar manages to bring some humanity and sympathy for a hapless beau trapped in a series of misunderstandings.

THE COFFEE I love how, when walking into a hotshot coffee shop in Lahore, you not only get a coffee menu, but a full food menu listing everything from burgers, to pasta, to sandwiches, to cakes, to brownies all the way to ice cream. I am a coffee person, but that’s the thing. You don’t have to go to a coffee shop to have just coffee anymore. You get the whole 9 yards. Lahoris are to food, as Shahid Afridi is to cricket. entertainment activities in the city besides food indulgence, the rise in coffee shops in the city have become the epitome of every hot spot to be checking in to. Whether you are gathering with friends or family, or just finding a place with a good WiFi connection to work under for a few hours, coffee shops have become the ideal place to hang out without a strong commitment to lunch or dinner. In case, you are up for a commitment, there’s a menu for your viewing right there.

Whether you are working, studying, eavesdropping on other people’s conversations, coffee shops provide the perfect environment from intimate get-togethers to just some quality ‘me’ time. With Masoom’s, CTC, Gloria Jeans as the early trend setters, coffee shops have started popping up all over, and many have progressed beyond the go-to “hang-out” place to becoming a legit place to eat quality food.

As far as atmosphere goes, the darker or further down the basement a coffee shop is, the mellower the ambiance and laidback the attitude. The closer you get to the roof; either the sun wakes you up along with the coffee. Along with that, these coffee shops have updated their music playlists in recent times, from contemporary to classic, making our youth, in some way, exposed to good music; added to the casual ambience with people of all ages filling up sofa chairs and bar stools. The Wi-Fi is, and always will be a plus. It has managed to keep us connected in a group setting. Interestingly the saying, ‘Slow internet is more frustrating than no internet’ still comes to life at coffee shops, but the owners seem to be investing into alternatives which makes the life of a worker or surfer much more interesting. More than that, Wi-Fi has almost become

happened with the likes of frozen yogurt shops and fast food. We are still far from the global trend of the single visitor to a coffee shop, but with places like Mocca, the trend seems to be catching on. For now we are proudly sticking to a group outing, a work meeting or a post dinner wake up call. Food is eventually going to be a deciding factor. Unlike the west, we generally drink coffee after work and of course a little something to eat with it is essential. Gloria Jeans and Coffee Planet have gone through their ‘FOOD’ down days, but seem to improving. It’s the edibles that have kept Masoom’s a long term favorite. We also have to see what Jammin’ Java and Hot Fuzon have coming up next.

a necessity, whether you are ‘checking in’ or taking care of business. One does not simply sit for three hours and not ask for the Wi-Fi password.

What Lies Ahead With these new joints opening up around town and the everlasting story on Starbucks’ arrival to Pakistan, we have much to look forward to. It might get a little clustered in days ahead, similar to what In upcoming rising coffee shops, come Mocca Café and Second Cup in Z block. They are already in some stiff competition since Second Cup will literally be alongside Coffee Republic and Coffee Planet and Mocca is alongside Cosa Delicatessen but it isn’t the coffee that brings you to these shops anymore, because it’s not just about the coffee anymore. It’s about how the food, snacks, music, atmosphere, and service. That is what sets apart your Espressos’ from your CTCs’.
