We all face dozens of decisions that surface every day. Sometimes we have to let go of things, detach ourselves from that emotional bond in order to move on. Rendezvous with

Tipu Sharif by Shanaz Ramzi 1. You have been quite active in the drama industry. What has been your favourite role so far? I think that would have to be my role as Pashain in Main Abdul Qadir Hoon, which was aired on HUM, and as Muntazir in Dard Aashna, which aired on PTV, for which I won the Best Actor award. 2. A moment from Manto that you can recall with clarity? Tell us a bit about your role in Manto. There were many memorable moments during the shooting of MANTO. I was seen playing Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, one of the pioneers of Pakistan’s film industry and the husband of Madame Noor Jehan. During the shooting of the movie there were some highly intense scenes with the talented Saba Qamar who played Noor Jehan. I particularly remember one scene that was about five pages long and required me to show expressions ranging from sarcasm to anger to utter evil. It was a highly enjoyable voyage of acting discovery. 3. We have often seen you completely transform for the role that you are playing. What is the process through which you put yourself to transform into that character? The script is very important. I first go through the entire script or at least as much as I am able to lay my hands on. Then I communicate my idea of the character to the director and through constant discussions we arrive at the final look, etc. I like changing my look so I keep experimenting with hair, beards, wardrobes, etc. 4. Your inspirations when it comes to acting? Amitabh Bachchan, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Irrfan Khan. 5. Besides acting you’ve shown interest in music; the motivation behind it? I Love singing and cannot live without music. That is it. 6. Musical inspirations? EBUZZ

8

MAR-APR 2016

Tough question. Kishore Kumar, Sinatra, Vital Signs, Junoon, Bryan Adams. 7. Do you write your own songs? What are they mostly based upon? I am involved in everything from melody designing to lyrics to instrumentation. I love ballads and believe that all good music comes from a finely-tuned thought and a soulful melody. And yes, I write most of my lyrics. 8. You are half Turkish, half Pakistani; would you like to share the tale of how your parents met? It was one 14th August in Istanbul when a consulate dinner was taking place to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day. Dad was seated next to Mum and to his surprise found that she spoke and understood English perfectly. Turks hardly speak English. My maternal grandparents were also there. By the time the evening ended, a proposal had been sent by my father and had been accepted by my mother and her parents. Sort of a fairy-tale romance! 9. Tell us about the period when you were a model. It was at the end of the ’90s and the early 2000s. I modelled just to make some extra money. Male models were not taken too seriously back then but I was fortunate enough to do everything from walking on the ramp to photo shoots to television commercials. Of course, models then were not as fit as they are now but even then, standards were pretty high. 10. How would you compare acting in movies with acting in

dramas? Movie acting involves more in terms of preparation. The execution time is very short and shooting spells end rather quickly. In dramas, the character keeps on evolving as the shooting goes on, whereas in films it stays constant in terms of mannerisms and appearance. 11. We recently saw the posters for the movie www.ebuzztoday.com

CHATROOM Saawan. Could you tell us a bit about the movie and your role in it? Who else is in it? Direction? What made you choose the role? Saawan is an experimental film. The protagonist is a handicapped child who encounters a gang of child traffickers and makes his escape. The events that happen through his journey make up the movie. A great deal of effort went into the making of this film. From experiencing extreme weather conditions to taking care of a threelegged dog (imported especially from the US for this project), the team underwent a lot of hardships to bring Saawan to the film screen. I play the role of a soldier in it –a border patrol officer from the armed forces who finally wraps up the whole story. Can’t divulge more at this time.

Sonam

The Style Diva of Fashion By Zuha Afzaal

Sonam Kapoor at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in Australia. The gorgeous actress opted to wear a local designer, donning a blush-hued gown from Paolo Sebastian’s Spring 2015 Couture collection. The Bollywood flavour of this dress furnished by the embellished lace cape gives it a more appealing touch.

Sonam Kapoor attended the ‘Inside Out’ premiere during the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival in, France. Here the Indian beauty is wearing this Elie Saab Spring 2015 Couture gown styled with stunning Chopard jewels. It looks quite challenging and nearly impossible to pull off on the red carpet. But Sonam is never shy of a challenge. At this point I will just give her an A for effort. Although she was criticised by a lot of fans on social media on pulling up this feathered look on the carpet, but she made a statement throughout the evening.

Having seen more pictures, and had more time to digest Sonam Kapoor’s Elie Saab Couture feathered gown, I have to say I’m now fully on board with the look. That is, I knew this gown would be near impossible to pull off on the red carpet. Sonam is never shy of a challenge, so I commend her for taking the risk, but I’m not ready to commit to loving this look at this time, and at this point I will just give her an A for effort. As some mentioned she is the ONLY one bring the drama to this quite lacklustre event which was proven once again at the Chopard party during the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. I am thoroughly delighted to see her wearing this epic piece from Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. It probably weighs a ton, but Sonam carries the look off with perfect poise. EBUZZ

FASHION

When it comes to bollywood glamour and style there is one name that pops up in our mind Bollywood’s most beloved star Sonam kapoor. Her refined and glamourous personality makes her one of the most watched international trendsetter. Not just she dresses beautifully but her coordination of hair, makeup and accessories makes her over all look more elegant and pretty. When it comes to fashion, Kapoor is a bonafide clotheshorse, updating her social channels with frequent peeks into her closet. She often combines pieces form different designers including Payal Khandwala, Anju Modi with Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler and Hermes. With the release of her latest film, Neerja, scheduled to release next month, Kapoor is set to provide the world with more A-list red carpet moments pretty soon. Lets kill the wait and show you some of her top ten previous red carpet stunners. While we keep an eye on her upcoming event appearances. Sonam Kapoor at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. Parading out an even more intensely electric shade of blue , Sonam stunned in a Ralph & Russo gown. This extravagant piece delivered on high drama between the powerful colour and the theatrical, periodstyle silhouette. The exaggerated hip-length draping isn’t always an easy look to carry but Sonam wears it confidently.

Sonam Kapoor attended the ‘Foxcatcher’ premiere on a very windy evening during Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. The actress selected an Anamika Khanna look which was a modern interpretation of the Indian saree. The flesh-coloured sheer ensemble embroidered with gold was accented with a pearl and gold choker, which looks like it could be part of the outfit. Opting to go matchy matchy, both her sandals and clutch colour coordinated with her stunning look.

www.ebuzztoday.com

Here cast in a romantic shade of powder blue, the gown – another Elie Saab Spring 2014 Couture look – features a structured bodice with cascades of sumptuous silk falling from the waist, creating an statement. Adding yet another stunning necklace, this time by Chopard, she styled the look with a matching gold clutch, and a slick ponytail. Carrying her own style and grace together she made an epic statement.

Sonam Kapoor made her appearance on the red carpet during the 2014 Cannes Film Festival for ‘The Homesman’ premiere. Spreading magic in the atmosphere, the actress looks breath-taking in an Elie Saab Spring 2014 Couture gown with Chopard jewels. As gorgeous as it was, I wish she had brought some colour to the red carpet like some coral, mustard or lavender gowns from the same collection. But she looked perfect from head to toe. She stunned the black look. MAR-APR 2016

Sonam Kapoor at the red carpet for the ‘Jeune & Jolie’ premiere during Cannes Film Festival. Her strapless petal blooming Dolce & Gabbana gown took center stage with its voluminous silhouette. It’s a very well worked silhouette by the Sicilian designers, but never have I seen one showcased and presented as beautiful as this. She styled her look with Sunita Kapoor jewels partly covered by her luscious wavy locks and pumps swathed with the same rose print. I would rate this as the best look of the evening. She looked chic and classy at the same time.

Here Sonam Kapoor serves up something traditional for her fans on the red carpet for the Opening Ceremony of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Kapoor wore a stunning Anamika Khanna Couture white lace saree featuring intricate gold embroidered through-out. I love the authenticity of this look, I have to give thumbs down the nose ring. Its a Nay from my end but it may look Yay to some. Jimmy Choo shoes and Sunita Kapoor’s jewels completed her look.

Sonam Kapoor finally took to the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival for the closing ceremony and the ‘Therese Desqueyroux’ premiere. She made her appearance in this Alexander McQueen gown. Sonam possess enough energy to pull off this dark, mysterious tulle embroidered gown. Pairing it up with simple black pumps . Not a lot of excitement here but the darkness of the dress adds glamour to the Star’s diva image.

Fashion DNA

Pakistani fashion was in full swing at London Fashion Week. Through Fashion DNA organised by the British Council, three talented brands presented their collections on the ramp. Fashion DNA is a designer mentorship for emerging Pakistani designers. The programme takes the format of a year long intensive training and designers are invited to apply their new skills through the production of a ready to wear capsule collection presented at both A/W 16 London Fashion Week and Fashion Pakistan Week in Karachi 2016. While in London, designers participated in the Centre for Fashion Enterprise’s market entry boot camp and potentially collaborate with UK designers. Attended by some of the most high profile Pakistani fashionistas, bloggers and stylists in the UK, the event was well received with rave reviews from fashion professionals. INTERVIEW

ana Shahnawaz’s You were doing quite well as a style director/wardrobe stylist. What made you get into production, that too at such a young age? I started working as a wardrobe stylist and eventually director while I was still studying. I am a textile graduate so working on these projects really helped me in getting a taste of how things work professionally. My family members Humayun Saeed and Samina Humayun Saeed have been a part of the industry for 20 years now. I have seen them working very hard which has been very inspiring for me. With the faith and support of my family and close friends, I decided to pursue production as a career.

What were the biggest challenges as a first-time producer? The biggest challenge is to prove myself. Coming from a high profile family has its own advantages and disadvantages. I have received the support of so many of my industry friends - it’s overwhelming. I have put my heart and soul in Mann Mayal and really hope the audience like it. Did you believe you’d be at the top of the game in production too?

INTERVIEW I strongly believe in being dedicated to everything I do and give it my 100%, otherwise there is no point. I started working as a wardrobe stylist while I was still a student and learnt a lot about the industry while perusing my studies. When I decided to become a producer, I planned and worked on Mann Mayal for several months. One cannot achieve success overnight. I totally understand that and I am willing to work as hard as it takes. What is your criterion when you select a script?

mantra that I follow. It’s just instinct. However, I do like picking scripts that balance our sensibilities with a modern approach. I feel that’s what our audience wants now. They definitely don’t want to see the same old stories retold over and over again.

The right emotions and great dialogue make all the difference in the world. I’m not that indulgent. However, I am a textile graduate and that makes me high on aesthetics. It should work for me. I’m a viewer too. I watch TV serials and movies quite frequently. So if something doesn’t work for me, it won’t work for anyone else. I enjoy the experience of going to the theatre on a weekend and watching a movie with the audiences. Incidentally, there’s no EBUZZ

Are you a magnanimous producer or do you believe in cutting costs? First and foremost, I believe in content. The right emotions and great dialogue make all the difference in the world. I’m not that indulgent. When sorting the budgets out, the writing team would be my first priority but I would definitely also like beautiful sets to bring the story to life. It’s all about working cost effectively. That’s what makes a producer good at their job. What kind of a colleague are you? I like to believe I am a great colleague but I can also be very demanding. My team loves that. We’re like family and have each other’s back always. What is that one factor that keeps you going? I’m extremely competitive. I know what I want and I will do whatever it takes to get it. My reputation matters to me the most. I am open to constructive criticism. I accept it and move on but not without

renewed zest. I understand my target audience and want to make sure they like what I present. I’m very conscious that way. You are currently the youngest producer in the country, but you have the biggest television network backing you and some of the most popular actors in the country as the star cast. Several big names [including Mahesh Bhatt] have been sending best wishes for you. Does it give you a sense of power? Not at all. I feel extremely humbled and very grateful for all the support I have received so far. It is important to stay grounded. What does success mean to you? I think success is not just limited professionally. It is just one aspect of your life and can only bring happiness to a certain level. Being surrounded by people who love and accept you wholeheartedly is what true success is. What message would you like to give for eBuzz readers? Stay happy – there is always something to be grateful for. Live each day to the fullest. Don’t judge. Live and let live!

to cuff your jeans perfectly! By ZUNERA SERENA Whether you dress your denim by wearing a kurta on top or you wear it with crop top you know the best way to style your denim or skinny jeans is to cuff it. Here are some tips on how to cuff your jeans right! 1. Long legs: If you have long legs then you can do a large cuff roll. 2. Short legs: if you have short or thick legs then stick to a short cuff roll because large cuff will make your legs look even thicker and shorter. 3. The best way to roll is to leave about an inch of ankle showing in between the jeans and boots. 4. For a thick cuff go with a wider-leg pair of jeans that are a little loose. 5. The skinny cuff works best on fitted silhouettes, as it creates the appearance of a long, lean line.

How Celebrities Love to Style! By HIRA ATTIQUE

Every celebrity out there has their own unique way of style and today we’re set on a mission to find out how our favorite celebrities like to dress up!

Mahira Khan

Mahira has been in the spotlight for ‘Ho Maan Jahaan’ promotions and she has slayed every look! But we’ve found something common in all of her looks and that is one bold color, whether it is on her lips or in her dress. She has gone from blood red to an all yellow outfit and her hairstyle has either been a slicked back ponytail or pinned back from one side. So, if you guys want to dress up like Mahira, all you need is flawless skin, a bold color and a slicked back hairstyle!

Ayesha Omer Ayesha Omer is known for her out of the box styling and fresh looks, give this women any dress and she’ll add her touch to it and create a whole new look out of it. Keeping her makeup to always a minimum and flaunting her ever so flawless skin this actress has always kept us wowing over her looks. What Ayesha loves to always keep in common is her hairstyle, she mostly loves to style her wavy/ curled hair on one side and keep it pinned back from the other side.

trends

Mawra’s sanam teri kasam promotions give us a reason to drool over her unique and exquisite sense of style every single day, her daily updates on instagram are literally killing us! We’ve seen her play with colors a lot these days, whether it’s a flowery long skirt, an orange and blue jumpsuit or a chic nude dress. The key to dressing like this young fashionista is to try every color out there with a good pair of heels and a gorgeous smile on your face.

Syra Shahroz Syra loves trying new trends, whether it’s getting a full bob, bangs, highlights or killing a top knot. She looks ever so gorgeous in all of these hair styles and her million dollar smile. We’ve always seen her dressing more on the casual side but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t bring her A game on when she needs to, we were all blown away by her Sania Maskatiya dress on the FPW2015 and her Zara Shahjahan dress on the little angle’s birthday! www.ebuzztoday.com

Style tips

on How to wear a maxi dress to a wedding By ZUNERA SERENA

A midi/maxi dress is a perfect look for a wedding guest. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you plan on wearing a maxi dress to your next wedding party. 1. Casual maxi dresses belong on a beach or they are good for a summer day but not for a wedding. 2. Deep cuts & low necklines are a big No No. So leave those for a cocktail party. 3. Crazy prints or neons are definitely not appropriate for an elegant affair like wedding. 4. Solid colors are always a perfect choice for any wedding 5. If you are petite then opt for a maxi dress with defined waist line. 6. Feminine colors and flowy floral prints are perfect for any wedding event. 7. Go for a chiffon or net maxi rather than cotton or silk. 8. If the maxi has a lot of embellishment then opt for minimal jewelry. 9. Avoid cutout maxi dresses they are definitely not wedding appropriate. 10. Pick a maxi dress that allows you to move around freely.

tête-à-tête

What or who inspires you? Well in this field my ustadams and biggest inspiration are “Guddu Shani”. Their passion and professionalism is something out of the world Internationally Gregory Crewdson and Paolo Roversi’s work truly inspires me. Do you consider yourself more of an artist or a photographer? I see my frames more with an eye of an artist. For me art is religion you got to respect and believe in whatever art piece you are creating art is nothing more and nothing less than the creative ability of individuals to express their understanding of any kind of emotion. When did you first decide to experiment with skin as a canvas? I don’t exactly remember the first doing as I am working since I graduated. How do you chose theme/colors for a shoot? I choose themes and colors according to the mood and demand of the project, and of course with addition of my creativity and thought process.

How would you define beauty? To me, beauty is subjective, it’s more in the eye of the beholder. In the context of art, beauty is the gauge of successful communication, the conveyance of a concept between the artist and the perceiver. What are you currently working on? Currently alot of projects are lined up including “Ali Zafar’s video song, Sana Safinaz TVC, fashion films, art exhibitions and many other fashion shoots are in the pipeline. What plans do you have for the future? Well in future I see myself as a Film Director inshaAllah. Any advice for the next generation in your field? Well road to success is not an easy “work hard with passion and success will follow you”.

MUSIC

BREAKING GROUNDS IN MUSIC FOR YOUNG TALENT Red Bull Track Club returns for the second time in Pakistan By Maria Mahesar Living in a country that makes headlines ‘mostly’ for all the wrong reasons we sometimes forget how our youth has engaged themselves in progressive areas of interest; music being one of them. Over the years our youth from all corners and parts of the country have taken music to express themselves best. But what is lacking is a platform where these young minds can bring their creative skills and talent in the limelight. Keeping the growing pool of young music talent the Red Bull Track Club returns for the second time in Pakistan; this time targeting young blood from Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. Red Bull Track Club is not your typical music competition. It is instead a platform for young music talent to use their creativity and music knowledge to create playlists in order to WOW the ultimate judge of the event i.e. the crowd. ‘The best thing about Red Bull Track Club is that the crowd decides the winner’ says Nauman Asad last year’s winner. ‘It all depends on your talent, creativity and music; these are the only tools to win the crowd over’ he further added. It is important for the tracks to fit into the right battle categories and within stated time limit. After applying on trackclub. redbull.pk within the stated time period, a panel of experts review the applications and shortlist eight most promising DJs to compete in the competition. The eight DJs EBUZZ

battle in a bracket-style format and compete in the categories of Deep House, Minimal and Tech House. The DJs can bring their tracks on mobiles, tabs, MP3 players or laptops. Once part of the competition the DJs then battle back and forth, with a choice of playing a mix or a track. The event kicked-off in Pakistan on February 6th at X2 where the crowd had given their verdict in favor of DJ FWD KEH, the winner of the competition in Lahore. ‘This is indeed a great moment for me’ said DJ FWD KEH after winning the competition. ‘The competition was tough but I am glad that it all worked out in my favor in the end. Winning Red Bull Track Club Lahore is indeed a great milestone for me and events of such nature should take place in our country to promote our growing music talent; indeed an opportunity that should not be missed’ added the young DJ from Lahore. For weeks young music talent from all corners of Lahore visited trackclub.redbull.

pk with the hope to be shortlisted as one of the eight DJs and eventually compete for the top title i.e. ‘Red Bull Track Club Champion Lahore’. The evening of February the 6th witnessed some enthralling performances from the eight shortlisted DJs that kept the crowd captivated till the very end of the show. In the first round ‘Minimal’ eight DJs in pairs of two had exactly three minutes to showcase their music skills and win the crowd over. In the end only four DJs made it through to the next round; KRAVISTERS, FWD KEH, ANONYMOUS and HYDRA. In the second round of ‘Techno House’ the four DJs were given 5 minutes to WOW the crowd with their skills and creativity in techno house; FWD KEH and KRAVISTERS were termed winners of the round. Inching closer to the final ‘BIG’ moment, FWD KEH and KRAVISTERS took center-stage with exactly eight minutes to showcase their creativity and skills in Deep House. Both DJs exhibited great competitive skills and kept the crowd grooving to their beats but in the end FWD KEH was the ultimate crowd favorite and became Red Bull Track Club Champion Lahore 2016. The second and third leg of the Red Bull Track Club 2016 is due to take place in Islamabad (Feb 12) and Karachi (Feb 13).

Eight romantic things to do in

Cyprus

Petra tou Romiou and the myth of Aphrodite

H

alfway between Limassol and Pafos, a distinctive group of huge rocks are scattered just offshore and according

to mythology this is the point where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, emerged from the waves to begin her life in Cyprus. Today these famous rocks are a popular attraction with visitors and residents alike as there is a very distinctive ambience there - especially when the rising sun chases the night away and the numerous fishing boats head back to the harbor with laden nets. Local legend tells how any woman wanting to be blessed with eternal youth should swim out to the furthest rock, swim around it in an anti-clockwise direction and then back to the shore.

HSailing around the Akamas

C

yprus is like a leaf floating in the eastern Mediterranean and it is surrounded by sea of the deepest blue. With 330 days of sunshine each year, there is always the opportunity to enjoy

the sea. There are boat trips available from all the harbors and there is nothing more romantic than snuggling up to your other half and relaxing to the motion of the boat. One of the best boat trips leaves Latchi harbor on the north coast every morning and heads westwards along the coast towards the tip at Cape Arnaouti. The coast in this part of the island is beautiful with sheer cliffs, small secluded bays and the beautiful blue lagoon which is the perfect place to enjoy a dip in the crystal clear water. The water is enjoyably warm for much of the year and as you peer down through the water it is not unusual to see small shoals of silvery fish around your feet.

The little church at Agios Georgios and the legend about love

N

orth of Pafos lies the tiny settlement and fishing shelter of Agios Georgios

which overlooks the islet of Yeronisos which is proving to be an archaeological treasure chest. Perched on the cliff top near to the large modern fish restaurant and modern church of Agios Georgios (Saint George) stands a little chapel, known locally as ‘the church of lovers’. Small and unimpressive on the outside, this tiny 18th century stone chapel is popular with lovers across Cyprus - keen to know that theirs is a true and equal love. Local legend tells that those eager to know if their love is true should visit the chapel. Inside there are wax candles on sale and traditionally these are lit in memory of someone who has died, or in prayer for a special request. For those needing an answer to that burning

question ‘does he/she truly love me? The test is to light a candle and to point it downwards whilst saying loudly and clearly the name of your loved one, three times. If the flame continues to burn strongly you can rest assured that you are truly loved by him/her but alas if the flame dies.

Troodos mountains

T

he Troodos mountains are a fun and romantic place to visit any time of the year. During the spring there is the wonderful smell of fresh pine and a myriad of wild flowers gently blossoming in the warm springtime sun. In the summer, the mountain air remains cools and fresh and a wonderful contrast to the hot coastal resorts. During the brief winter months, the mountains are completely transformed by a thick dusting of snow and everyone heads for the ski slopes. Explore the mountains at a leisurely pace following meandering paths on one of the CTO nature trails through the pine trees to one of the ten UNESCO Byzantine painted churches or one of the monasteries, enjoying the clear mountain air and the fragrance of wild herbs and fresh pine. Wander along the cobbled streets of picturesque mountain villages such as Kakopetria, Kalopaniyiotis and Phini (Foini) where a wealth of architectural styles and craft workshops will be revealed where red

clay pots, embroidery, rose water and rag rugs are made or food specialities such as soujouko (strings of almonds dipped in thickened grape juice), glyko (seasonal fruits preserved in sugar syrup) and delicious mountain honey are produced. www.ebuzztoday.com

Travel dairy There is so much to see and do in the mountains including a visit to Kykkos Monastery, the richest one in the Orthodox church, a walk up the side of the Kaledonia falls at Pano Platres and a fresh trout lunch together afterwards, or a romantic stroll through the trees to find one of the Venetian bridges, tumbling streams or mountain rivers and at the end of each fun-filled day, there is nothing more romantic than sharing dinner together in a small stone taverna in front of the roaring log fire in the winter or in the summer outside in the avli (courtyard) in the golden glow of candlelight.

Stand and watch the sunset

W

hilst many enjoy the colourful and varied nightlife that Cyprus offers, for those in love, a walk along the coast is VERY romantic. Two of

with the love of your life, then head for Ayia Napa! The beaches are beautiful with pale golden sand, sheltered water and a plethora of water sports. Situated just outside the town, is the popular Nissi Beach which is big and sandy and the water is perfect – shallow and calm, with a small island just 100 metres out for those who want a challenging swim (‘Nissi’ in Greek means ‘island’)! In complete contrast the, the beach at Ayia Thekla is small sandy – and a relatively – secluded beach which is overlooked by a pretty little white washed chapel. Protaras is another popular beach resort because it has several lovely beaches and great watersports including windsurfing and sailing. The most popular beach in this resort is ‘Fig Tree Bay’ and it is easy to see why with its fine sand that is almost white in colour and the clearest azure water you have ever seen.

Concert at moonlight

D

the most popular walks are the new coastal promenade in Limassol or the Phinikoudes promenade in Larnaka. Both are lovely smooth paths with plenty of places to linger awhile. The sunsets in Cyprus are magnificent throughout the year but especially in the autumn and in Pafos as is it is situated on the island’s west coast. Be warned though, the sunsets in Cyprus are dramatic but short-lived and as the sun sinks below the horizon an inky blackness covers the island really quickly with no dusk in between!

uring the summer months, a number of evening concerts are held under the canopy of stars and are almost magical in character. Ancient Curium is a magnificent Roman theatre perching on the cliffs high above the beach just a few kilometres west of Limassol where each year a popular Shakespearean play is performed and has seen some wonderfully diverse musical concerts ranging from military bands to Vanessa Mae! Ancient Amathus on the other side of Limassol is an equally stunning setting for musical and dramatic events. In the

Ayia Napa and Protaras

f you fancy stretching out under a sun umbrella on the softest, whitest sand and dozing to the sound of the waves

heart of Limassol, the Tsirion stadium has been the venue for some excellent pop concerts including Sting and Blue. In Larnaka, productions often take place in the popular Finikoudes promenade and Pattichion Amphitheatre and in Ayia Napa, sport stadiums often host concerts by popular Greek and British artists as well as West End shows. The capital, Nicosia is the focus for musical events of all kinds and whilst internationally acclaimed classical music concerts are hosted indoors by the Pharos Trust, well known international stars regularly perform in the magical setting of the D’Avila Moat – a concert facility situated in the shadow of the

old city walls. In recent years there have been some sensational concerts including Elton john, Pavarotti and Diana Ross. In Pafos, the picturesque harbor is transformed each September for the annual Pafos Aphrodite Festival which draws opera lovers from all over Europe. Against the magnificent backdrop of the medieval castle, an international opera company performs a much loved opera and it really is a breathtaking experience to relax and listen to the opera with the moon above and a plethora of fishing boats heading out to see in the distance.

Walk the walk

A

walk in the Cypriot countryside is always romantic but particularly so in springtime when the fields and meadows are completely transformed by a myriad of wild flowers including asphodels, fennel, irises and numerous species of orchids. The Akamas is the wild and rugged wilderness situated northwest of Pafos and said to be the ‘playground of Aphrodite’ and the perfect place to walk along the meandering paths through the gorse to Lara, one of the most beautiful bays in Cyprus and home in the summer to the Lara Turtle Project. For those staying in Paphos the walk along the harbor towards Paphos Castle

is fun, whilst in Limassol, the new coastal promenade from the Molos area towards Ayios Tychonas is great fun with plenty of bars along the way for a refreshing drink. In Larnaka, a walk around the marina is both fun and romantic as you day dream about the sleek white yachts and their destinations. The Finikoudes promenade in the town is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists and can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace all the way to the medieval castle. If you are exploring the island’s north coast, the perfect places to wander are in the harbors of Latchi, Pomos and Kato Pyrgos with a delicious meal of freshly cooked fish as the perfect reward.
