Games 20 & 21: Utica College & Hartwick College Last Time Out

EC was able to turn a 13-point first-quarter deficit into a four-point lead in the second quarter, but Stevens Institute of Technology pulled away in the second half en route to a 67-55 win on January 30th. EC went on a 19-2 run to take a 19-15 lead at the 7:43 mark in the second quarter. The two teams played to a 29-all tie at the break, but the Ducks flew ahead by double digits in the third quarter and never looked back. Meghan Loya ’16 paced EC with 14 points and nine rebounds. Stevens’ Kaitlyn Astel led all players with 23 points.

Hartwick College HAWKS (8-10, 6-4 Empire 8)

The senior from Bethel, CT, continues to impress for EC. She tied her career high with 14 points against Stevens on Saturday. It was the fifth 14-point game of her career and her first such game since doing so on February 9th, 2015, against Pennsylvania College of Technology. In addition, Loya continued to be a force on the glass, as she only needed one more rebound to earn her second double-double of the season. The 5-foot-10 forward has also seen an increased amount of attempts from the free-throw line, going 11-for-13 from the charity stripe over the last three games. Since the start of 2016, Loya has only missed three foul shots, compiling an impressive 88.5 free-throw percentage over that span.

Green Light For Green

Over her last six games, Emily Green ’18 has seen her game grow exponentially, becoming EC’s No. 2 scoring threat with an average of 10.5 points per contest. After dropping three consecutive games, the Hawks have bounced back with consecutive wins over Utica and Houghton. Hartwick is near the bottom of the E8 in scoring, leading only Alfred with 54.4 points per game. However, Hartwick has the second-best defense in the conference, limiting opponents to 56.2 points per contest. The Hawks are last in the Empire 8 in rebounds per game at 34.8. The team’s leading scorer, senior Taylor Vonasek, has scored double figures in 16 of 18 games and enters the weekend fifth in the E8 with 15.7 points per game. Hartwick faces Alfred on Friday, February 5th, before visiting Elmira on Saturday.
