ECAC West Honors

Sophomore goaltender Sal Magliocco ’17 was named the ECAC West Conference’s Goaltender of the Week. Magliocco made 31 saves in Elmira’s 1-1 overtime tie against Manhattanville College. For Magliocco, Saturday’s game was his first appearance in net since February 1, 2014 when Elmira faced Utica College.

Rematch Time

Tonight’s game is a rematch of last year’s ECAC West Conference Tournament Championship game. Elmira won that tournament final, 5-2. Elmira has won 10 ECAC West Tournament titles, and have gone 4-5 in tournament final rematch games. In those nine contests, Elmira has outscored their opponents, 37-34. The last time Elmira played in a rematch of a conference final, the Soaring Eagles defeated Neumann University 4-2 in the 2011-12 season.

Coach Aaron Saul ’98

Now in his sixth season at the helm of the Elmira College men’s ice hockey program, Coach Saul is sitting on 96 career wins, 77 of which have occurred during his tenure with the Soaring Eagles. Coach Saul is also one of just six coaches in EC program history, and one of just three coaches with multiple ECAC West Conference Tournament titles.

Last Time Out

Elmira picked up a loss and tie in the opening weekend of the 201415 season, both games going to overtime. After skating away with a 3-2 overtime loss to Neumann University, the Soaring Eagles went out and picked up a 1-1 overtime tie against Manhattanville College.

Tommy Sumi ’16 has also produced a point in each of Elmira’s first two games. He is riding a three game point streak, which also dates back to last season.

Tough Defense

Through their first two games of the year, Elmira has allowed just four goals. Elmira’s 2.00 goals allowed per game is tied for the 11th best average in all of NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey.

The Heart of it All for Utica

Last season Elmira and Utica faced each other four times. In those four meetings, Elmira’s Brian Depp ’16 enjoyed a good amount of success as he recorded six points on three goals and three assists. One of his three goals came as the game-winner. Ohio native Dalton Carter ’18 has had a tremendous start to his collegiate career. He leads Utica with eight points, four more than any other Pioneer, on one goal and seven assists. He boasts the nation’s highest point per game average with 2.67, so look for Carter to be a focal point of Utica’s offense tonight.

The Soaring Eagles have faced the Pioneers of Utica College 38 times. Elmira has gone 21-12-5 against Utica in those 38 meetings. As a team, Elmira scored 109 goals last season, the most by any EC team coached by Aaron Saul ’98. The last Elmira team to score more goals dates back to the 2008-09 season when the Soaring Eagles recorded 112. However, in five years at the helm of the EC men’s ice hockey program, Saul boasts three 100-goal seasons.

ECAC West Supremacy

The Soaring Eagles were voted to finish first in the ECAC West Conference according to the preseason coaches poll. Elmira received five firstplace votes and a total of 35 points as they were picked to be the team to beat in 2014-15.

The Purple and Gold have had a fair amount of success in years following an ECAC West Tournament title.
