It is the fifth consecutive year that the Elmira College women’s ice hockey team will open its season in Northfield, VT at the East-West Classic. The East-West Classic has become the premier season-opening tournament in the country. The East-West Classic pits the top two teams from the ECAC East and ECAC West divisions against each other and this year, three of the four schools represented are ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO Poll.

A Precursor to Greatness

The East-West Classic has become a launching point for national championship runs as the last four national champions have begun their season in Northfield, VT. Norwich, the East-West Classic host, started the stretch in 2011, followed by RIT, Elmira, and most recently, Plattsburgh State.

Season Opener

Dating back to their first collegiate season, Elmira has gone 9-2-2 in season opening games. Elmira has tied their opponents in the last two season openers and have not had a season opening win since the 2010-11 season. The 2010-11 season opening win came against New England College, Elmira’s first year playing in the East-West Classic.

100-Points on the Horizon

Ashley Ryan ’15 enters this weekend with 97 career points on 42 goals and 55 assists. Three points for Ryan would make her the ninth 100-point scorer in Elmira College women’s ice hockey history. The last Elmira College 100-point scorer was Tanis Lamoureux ’14 who scored career 100 on February 15, 2014 in a 6-0 win over SUNY Cortland.

Hogan on the PP

Ashton Hogan ’15 led Elmira in power play goals last season with eight man-up goals. She finished the year tied for fifth in the country in power play goals.

Not Since 2009-10

Last season Elmira had five players with 10 or more goals, marking the first time since the 2009-10 season that EC has had as many double-digit goal scorers. The last time Elmira had more than five players with 10 or more goals dates back to the 2005-06 season when six Soaring Eagles had double-digit goals.

In Good Company

Ashley Ryan ’15 finished last season by leading the Soaring Eagles in points for a second consecutive year. Ryan is the third player in Elmira history to lead the team in points in back-to-back seasons, joining former greats Laura Hurd ’05 and Kayla Coady ’09.

Void in Net?

With the absence of 2013-14 starting goalie Lisa Marshall ’14, there is a vacancy in net for the Soaring Eagles. Whoever gets the start will have the least amount of collegiate experience of an EC goalie since the 2009-10 season when Lauren Sullivan ’13 started in 20 games as a rookie.

All-Time vs. Norwich

Elmira is 4-5-1 against Norwich University after going 1-2 against the Cadets last season. Last year, both teams beat each other on their home ice. Norwich got wins at the East-West Classic and the NCAA Quarterfinals while the Soaring Eagles picked up their lone win at the Murray Athletic Center on January 10th.

All-Time vs. Manhattanville

The Soaring Eagles have a 17-5-3 edge in the all-time series against Man-

Instagram hattanville, including two wins in NCAA Championship games. The first www.instagram.com/ECSoaringEagles meeting between the two teams dates back to the 2001-02 season. 2
