The Elmira College men’s ice hockey team opens up the 2013-14 season at home on November 1st against the #14 nationally ranked Knights of Neumann University before playing host to Manhattanville College the next night. EC is coming off a 10-16 season in which the Soaring Eagles qualified for the ECAC West tournament as the #5 seed. The Elmira men missed out on the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The Purple and Gold begin their 41st season of collegiate hockey in program history, with EC’s first year dating back to the 1973-74 season.

Captains Named

Elmira College head coach Aaron Saul ’98 named Eric David ’15 and Josh Burnell ’15 captains for the 2013-14 season. David is a defender from Dorval, QUE - last season he owned assistant captain duties. Burnell is a forward from Mississauga, ONT - last season he led the team in points with eight goals and a team high 16 assists. Last but certainly not least is Liam Burtt ’16, who will be handling assistant captain duties for the upcoming year. Burtt is a defender from Manotick, ONT - last season he led all EC defenders in points with 10 on three goals and seven assists.

Home Opener

Historically, Elmira has fared well in home opening games, going 2610-4. Under Coach Saul, the Soaring Eagles are 2-2 with their only losses coming against Oswego State.

A sign of things to come?

Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

ECAC West Honors

Elmira welcomes back captain Josh Burnell ’15, who led the Soaring Eagles in points last season on eight goals and 16 assists for 24 total points. For his efforts, Burnell was an ECAC West All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.

More ECAC West Honors

Michael Collins ’16 had a phenomenal rookie season as he totaled 22 points on eight goals and 14 assists. He was the ECAC West’s fourth leading rookie scorer which eventually led to an ECAC All-Rookie West selection.

The Soaring Eagles have a 23-13-2 edge in the all-time series against Neumann. The first meeting between the two teams dates back to the 2001-02 season.

As head coach of the Purple and Gold, head coach Aaron Saul ’98 owns a 7-7-1 record against Knights. However, Neumann has gotten the best of Elmira in recent memory as the Knights are currently on a two game win-streak.
