Tuesday marks the first contest of 2014 for the Soaring Eagles. EC has had decent success in first games of the New Year over the last 14 years, going 7-5-2, however, the Purple and Gold have not won their first game of the New Year since January 2, 2010 when EC defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering by a score of 4-2.
Tuesday Night Games
Tonight’s match-up against the Blue Devils marks Elmira’s second of three Tuesday night games of the 2013-14 season. This is the first season Elmira will have played in more than one Tuesday night game since the 2007-08 season when the Soaring Eagles played in three.
Elmira in Tuesday Night Games
Since the 1999-00 season, Elmira has done extremely well in Tuesday night games. The EC men boast a 22-5-1 record in those games, including a 10-2-0 mark when playing those games at the Murray Athletic Center. Also, Elmira is undefeated against Fredonia State in Tuesday night games since the 1999-00 season.
Back Between the Pipes
Ryan deMelo ’15 made his first start of the 2013-14 season in EC’s most recent game against Fitchburg State. The junior, who missed the first 10 games due to injury, allowed three goals in his season debut, but recorded 22 saves to earn the victory.
The Nation’s No. 1 Power Play Attack
EC has found continued success when awarded a man-up situation, registering 18 power play goals in 56 chances. The 32.1 percent success rate ranks the Soaring Eagles as the top power play unit in all of NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey.
