Elmira’s 3-2 win over No. 10 Oswego State marks the first time the Soaring Eagles have defeated the Lakers since the 2009-10 season. Entering Saturday night’s game, Oswego had not lost a contest in 10 consecutive games, going 8-0-2 in those contests. Prior to Saturday night’s victory, Elmira had dropped nine straight contests to Oswego with their most recent win coming in the 2009-10 home opener, a game that was also decided by a single goal.

Another Ranked Opponent, Another Win

The Soaring Eagles have hosted three nationally ranked teams this season and Elmira has won each of those three games. On the season, Elmira is 3-2 against nationally ranked teams, their only losses coming to No. 5 Utica College and No. 10 Oswego State, both on the road.

Shinkaruk Does it Again

Carter Shinkaruk ’16 scored just 28 seconds into the game against Oswego State, sparking Elmira’s offense to score three straight goals. It is the second time in three games Shinkaruk has scored a goal in the opening minute of a contest, the other opening minute goal occurring against No. 11 Geneseo State.

Strong First Period

EC found their scoring touch early against the Lakers, putting three goals on the scoreboard in the first period. Elmira’s three first period goals is the most they have scored in an opening period this season and it is the most since November 9, 2012 when EC scored three first period goals against SUNY Geneseo. The last time Elmira scored more than three goals in the first period dates back to October 29, 2010 when EC scored four goals against Morrisville State.

In Elmira’s 3-2 win over Oswego, the Soaring Eagles were outshot by the Lakers, 44-26, a margin of 18. It is the second time this season Elmira has been outshot but still won the game, the other win coming against SUNY Geneseo. The last time Elmira was outshot by more than 18 and still managed to skate away with a victory dates back to the 2010-11 season when EC topped Manhattanville, 2-1 after being outshot 43-23.

Power Play Unit Still in Good Shape

Once again, Elmira’s power play unit proved to be a key factor in EC’s 3-2 win over Oswego State as Greg Whittle ’16 scored the game-winner on a power play chance. As a team, Elmira ranks second in the country in power play efficiency, scoring on 32.5 percent of their chances.

In All But One Game

It’s no surprise Elmira’s power play unit has been great so far this season. With the exception of Elmira’s 3-0 loss to Buffalo State, the Soaring Head Coach ................................................... Aaron Saul ’98 Eagles have scored at least one power play goal in every game. HOCKEY INFORMATION

Going for Number Four

With three straight wins, Elmira will be looking for number four against Fredonia State. The three-game win streak ties this season’s longest and win number four would make it Elmira’s longest stretch of wins since the 2011-12 season when EC won four straight, with one of those wins coming against Fredonia State.

Magliocco Continues to Shine

Sal Magliocco ’17 had another career game in Elmira’s 3-2 win over No. 10 Oswego. The rookie netminder made 42 saves, tying his career high. He has made 40 saves or more two times this season and in Elmira’s last three games, is averaging 36.7 saves.

Herold Breaks Through OVERALL Dylan Herold ’14 scored Elmira’s second goal against Oswego, a goal that W-L-T Pct. would prove to be very important down the stretch. Herold’s goal is his 10-3-3 0.719 first of the season and the first since January 21, 2011 when he punched 9-6-0 0.600 home his fourth of the season against Utica College. 8-4-4 0.625 10-6-0 0.625 7-6-3 0.531 Balaban Steps Up With several injuries to EC’s defense, sophomore Max Balaban ’16 moved 3-12-1 0.219

from forward to defense. Balaban got the start, helping the EC back line hold Oswego to just two goals, tying Oswego’s season-low.

Josh Burnell ’15: Mr. Consistency

Josh Burnell ’15 leads Elmira with 17 points on the year, but more impressive is that he has registered at least one point in 13 of EC’s 15 games. The two games he did not tally a point was in a shutout loss against Buffalo State and a win against Cortland State, a game in which Burnell was only available for the first 22:33 of the game.

Saul at Elmira vs. the SUNYAC

Since his arrival in 2009, Coach Saul has seen success against teams in the SUNYAC Conference, going 27-17-2. His best year against the SUNYAC was in 2010-11 when his Soaring Eagles went 7-2-1. Scan the QR code with your smartphone for all of today’s coverage.

All-Time vs. Fredonia State

Elmira owns a decisive advantage in the all-time series against Fredonia State as the Soaring Eagles hold a 15-6-1 record with their first meeting dating back to the 1992-93 season.

Coach Saul vs. Fredonia State

As head coach of the Purple and Gold, Aaron Saul ’98 has gotten the better of Fredonia State, boasting a 7-1 record against the Blue Devils. Prior to last year’s loss, Saul’s EC teams had beaten Fredonia five straight times.

Fredonia State This Season

Fredonia State enter Tuesday’s game with a 4-9-3 record, but the Blue Devils are playing their best hockey of the season as of late, going 2-0-1 in their last three games. The Blue Devils picked up wins against Curry College and Franklin Pierce during the three game stretch. Their lone tie came against New England College, a team that has recieved votes in the USCHO poll as recent as January 20, 2014.

Fredonia State This Season

The Blue Devils are led on offense by a pair of junior forwards in Jared Wynia and Stephen Castriota. Both players lead Fredonia with 11 points apiece. Wynia is also the team’s leading scorer with nine goals, five of those tallies coming on power play opportunities.

Not in 40 years

Last season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.

A Sign of Things to Come?

Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
