EC stands just two victories from their 10th ECAC West Tournament Championship. Their most recent championship came in the 2010-11 season when the Soaring Eagles defeated Neumann University 5-1 in the title game. An ECAC West championship in 2013-14 would give the Purple and Gold the most titles in ECAC West history, a mark currently shared with former conference rival, RIT.

We Meet Again

Elmira and Hobart College have met four times in the ECAC West playoffs, all in the semifinal round, since the 1992-93 season. EC has won each of the four meetings and the Soaring Eagles have gone on to win the ECAC West Championship three out of the four times, the most recent of which came in the 2010-11 season.

Playoff Hockey at the Domes

The Soaring Eagles will host an ECAC West playoff game for the first time since the 2011-12 season, the last of a six-season stretch in which EC hosted at least one playoff game. During that time, Elmira was 5-4 at home including winning the 2010-11 ECAC West Championship.

A Program First

Last weekend saw Elmira fell to Hobart College in overtime on consecutive nights. This is the first time in EC’s 39-year history that the Purple and Gold have lost back-to-back overtime games.

Consecutive Nights with Overtime

For the first time in nine years, Elmira College played overtime games on consecutive nights. The last time this occurred was on October 29 and 30, 2004 during a home-and-home series with Oswego State. The Soaring Eagles and the Lakers tied both games, 3-3 in game one and 2-2 in game two.

Alexander Taulien ’17 has frequented the penalty box in his rookie season as he has been whistled for 21 penalties which have amounted to 50 minutes worth of penalty minutes. He leads EC in penalty minutes by 14 over fellow newcomer Eddie Nolan ’17 and is the first freshman since the 2002-03 season to record at least 50 penalty minutes. The last rookie to do so was Andrew Morris ’06.

After scoring his 10th power play goal of the season against Hobart on February 22nd, Josh Burnell ’15 moved into a three-way tie for the most power play goals in the nation. Burnell joins Louis Belisle of Middlebury College and Sean Orlando of Trinity College at the top of the list with 10 power play goals, or 0.42 power play goals per game.

Josh Burnell ’15 has taken advantage of the man-up situations EC has had this season, scoring 10 of his 15 goals on the power play. Burnell is the first Elmira player since Darcy Vaillancourt ’12 to record double-digit power play goals in a season. Vaillancourt notched 12 man-up goals in the 2009-10 season.

Four with Double-Digits

Four Elmira skaters have recorded double-digit goals this season, which follows a 2012-13 season in which no EC player reached that plateau. Josh Burnell ’15, Michael Collins ’16, Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16, and Jesper Strale ’14 have each scored at least 10 goals this season with Burnell leading the way with 15. This is the first time since the 2009-10 season that at least four players have reached double-digits, when five players did it.

What a Turnaround!

The Soaring Eagles were scored on 128 times last season and had a goal differential of -40. 2012-13 was the first time in over 13 seasons that EC finished a season with negative scoring margin but the men have pulled a a 180 this season. The Purple and Gold have only allowed 83 goals entering the ECAC West playoffs, equaling a 45-goal turnaround. This is the best improvement in over 13 seasons, the closest being a 30-goal improvement from the 2006-07 season to 2007-08.

Not Since 2002-03 Media Coverage March 1st vs. Hobart College

Rookie goaltender Sal Magliocco ’17 missed the final portion of the regular season due to injury, but prior to that, the Roslyn, NY native had posted one of the best seasons by a first-year netminder in Elmira College history. Magliocco posted an 11-6-0 record, recorded 542 saves with a .911 save percentage, and registered a 3.21 goals against average. His 542 saves are the most by a rookie goaltender since the 2002-03 season when former EC great Greg Fargo ’06 stopped 641 his freshman season.

ECAC West Second-Team

The Purple and Gold also placed three skaters on the All-Conference Second Team in Michael Collins ’16, Jesper Strale ’14, and Eric David ’15. Collins and Strale both tallied a career-high 28 points this season, tying for second on the team in scoring behind Burnell. David spearheaded the Elmira defense as he led all defenders with 14 points on four goals and 10 assists, all of which are career highs.

ECAC All-Rookie Team

The Soaring Eagles placed two players on the ECAC West All-Rookie team in Alexander Taulien ’17 and Sal Magliocco ’17. Taulien finished the regular season with eight goals and six assists for a total of 14 points, the sixth highest total of any rookie skater in the ECAC West. Magliocco made 542 saves in his first season with the Purple and Gold with a goals against average of 3.21, leading to an 11-6-0 overall record.

Coach of the Year

After guiding his team to a 14-10-1 overall record, a 9-5-1 mark in the ECAC West, and the second seed in the ECAC West Tournament, Head Coach Aaron Saul ’98 was voted the ECAC West Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season. This is the third time Saul has won this award since his return to his alma mater in 2009.

Three in a Row

The Statesmen come into tonight’s ECAC West Semifinal matchup on a three-game win streak, including two overtime wins over the Soaring Eagles on the final weekend of the regular season. The two wins over EC clinched the number three seed in the ECAC West tournament for the Statesmen, who prior to gaining the four conference points, sat just two points ahead of Manhattanville College in the conference standings.

Finding Success at the MAC

Hobart has had decent success playing at the Murray Athletic Center over the last five years, holding a 5-3 record over the Soaring Eagles, including winning the last three matchups. The Statesmen, however, have been unable to breakthrough at the MAC in the ECAC West Tournament, losing each of the two games played on EC’s home ice.

No Sophomore Slump Here

The Statesmen are led by four second-year players in Mac Olson, Ben Gamache, Bo Webster, and Lino Chimienti. Olson, Gamache, and Webster have spearheaded the Hobart attack this season as they each have 20-plus points. Olson leads the way with 27 points on 15 goals and 12 assists, Gamache has 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists, and Webster has 23 points on six goals and a team-leading 17 assists. Chimienti has played over 1,245 minutes between the pipes, has a save percentage of .914, and owns a goals against average of 2.51.

Not in 40 years

Last season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.
