The Soaring Eagles had a three-game winning streak snapped when they fell to Fredonia State on Tuesday night, 5-4. The first line teamed up to combine for eight of the team’s 10 points with Josh Burnell ’15 collecting four, Tommy Sumi ’16 picking up two, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 tallying one point and defenseman Nick Owen’17 posting one.

Burnell’s Big Night

Against Fredonia, Burnell tallied four points on one goal and three assists. His four points as well as his three assists are career highs. The other time he had four points in a single night was in the 2011-12 season when he scored two goals and assisted on another two against Nazareth College. The last time he recorded three assists in a single game was against Morrisville State College during the 2012-13 season.

ECAC West Goaltender of the Week

This past week Sal Magliocco ’17 was named the ECAC West Goaltender of the Week after pair of non-conference wins against Cortland State and No. 10 nationally ranked Oswego State. Magliocco ended the week with 75 saves, with a career best 42 saves against Oswego to help Elmira snap a nine-game losing streak to the Lakers.

ECAC West Honor Roll

Strale also earned ECAC West recognition after he posted four points on one goal and three assists in the comeback win over Cortland, tying his career best in points and assists. The last time he had four points in a game was January 13th, 2012 when, with Strale’s help, the Purple and Gold downed the Morrisville State Mustangs 5-1.

Burnell’s four points against Fredonia ups his season total up to 21, tying him for 19th in the nation. His three assists also puts his season total up to 13, ranking him 22nd in the nation. His power-play goal upped his season total to seven, ranking him third in the nation, only one away from first. The Soaring Eagles still rank among the best in power-play efficiency as they are second in the nation with a 32.14 percent success rate.

Magliocco’s Magic

Rookie goaltender Sal Magliocco ’17 has been solid in net for the Soaring Eagles this season, recording eight of EC’s nine wins. He has made 438 saves with a save percentage of .913. His career high 42 saves is a mark he has reached twice so far this season.

EC Peppering The Net

Elmira put 52 shots on goal in the loss against Fredonia State. This is the second time this season that the Purple and Gold have posted 52 shots in one night. The last time they had as many shots was in the first meeting against Fredonia State this season on November 19th, when Elmira cruised to 5-0 win.

EC Finding the Back of the Net

Elmira is ranked 15th in the nation in scoring with an average of 3.69 goals per game. Since being shutout by Buffalo State on November 30th, Elmira has scored an average of 4.5 goals per game, including a season high seven goals against Cortland State on January 14th.

Against Nationally Ranked Teams

OVERALL This season the Soaring Eagles have played five nationally ranked teams, W-L-T Pct. posting a 3-2 record in those games. EC holds wins over No. 14 Neu10-3-3 0.719 mann, No. 11 SUNY Geneseo, and No. 10 Oswego State. 9-7-0 0.562 8-4-4 0.625 Back to the Grind 10-6-0 0.625 Elmira will finish the remainder of their regular season with ECAC West 7-6-3 0.531 Conference play. The Soaring Eagles have posted a 4-2-0 record in ECAC 3-12-1 0.219 West play this season, with losses coming against Manhattanville College

Elmira holds the all-time advantage against Neumann University, owning a 23-13-2 edge in the series history. These two foes met earlier this season when EC hosted the Knights in their season opener on November 1st when Neumann was ranked 14th in the nation, a game Elmira won 4-2.

Neumann This Season

The Knights are 7-6-3 this season with a 2-3-1 record in ECAC West contests. Neumann is on a two-game skid after dropping a pair to No. 14 SUNY Geneseo last week. Prior to the two losses to Geneseo, the Knights had just one loss in the previous nine contests (with two ties).

Neumann’s Netminders

Braely Torris and Ben Curley have split time in the net for Neumann and both have done a solid job this season. Torris has played in nine games and has posted 291 saves, a .918 save percentage, a 2.85 goals against average while carrying a 2-5-2 record this season. Curley has posted a 5-1-1 record this season making 206 saves on a .928 save percentage while recording a 2.25 goals against average. Curley ranks 18th in the country in save percentage so far this season.

Neumann on the Attack

Shayne Morrissey and Chris Bournazos both lead Neumann in scoring so far this season with six points apiece. Morrissey has scored four goals and has tallied two assists while Bournazos has picked up two goals and four assists.

Not in 40 years

Last season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.

A Sign of Things to Come?

Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
