EC stands just one victory from their 10th ECAC West Tournament Championship. Their most recent championship came in the 201011 season when the Soaring Eagles defeated Neumann University 5-1 in the title game. An ECAC West championship in 2013-14 would give the Purple and Gold the most titles in ECAC West history, a mark currently shared with former conference rival, RIT.
EC’s Back, Back Again
Elmira is back in the ECAC West Tournament finals for the first time in three years. For Elmira, this year’s championship appearance is their 15th in college history, with their first ECAC West Championship appearance coming in the 1977-78 season.
Not Since 2005-06
This weekend’s ECAC West Championship game against Utica College marks the third meeting between the Soaring Eagles and the Pioneers in the ECAC West Tournament. The first meeting dates back to the 2004-05 season when Utica edged Elmira 4-3 in double overtime. However, the most recent meeting in 2005-06 favors EC as the Purple and Gold defeated the Pioneers 3-2 in the ECAC West Championship game. That same year, Elmira defeated Hobart in the conference semifinals, 4-3.
Going Full Circle
For the members of the Class of 2014, this Saturday’s ECAC West Championship brings back memories of the 2010-11 championship team. Elmira’s Dylan Herold ’14 and Jesper Strale ’14 both played in the 2011 title game. Strale scored the game-winner against Neumann in the title game in addition to two goals and three assists in the semifinal game against Hobart that year. For his efforts, Strale was named the 2011 ECAC West Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
