ELMIRA COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

Game 16: Elmira College at Houghton College

TUESDAY’S OPPONENT

Last Time Out

Elmira continued its conference schedule last weekend with a pair of road games against Utica College and Hartwick College. Against the Pioneers, Elmira got off to a poor start in the opening 4:16 of the contest. In that time, EC went 0-for-2 from the field and turned the ball over four times, resulting in an early 10-0 lead for Utica. The Pioneers would eventually go on to claim a 10-point win, 76-66. The following day saw the Soaring Eagles pieced together one of their strongest firsthalf performances of the season, as Elmira led by as many as 18 points. Elmira would eventually take a 10-point lead into the halftime break. Hartwick’s offense caught fire in the second half, as the Hawks shot a blistering 60-percent from the field on 18-of-30 shooting, while holding Elmira to 31-percent shooting from the field. As a result, the Hawks went on to claim an 81-70 victory.

Season-High From Downtown

Hayden Harkins ’18 tied his season’s best with seven made three-pointers against Hartwick. His seven makes from downtown are the most made by an Elmira player in a road game this season. The last time an Elmira player knocked down more in a road game dates back to last season, when Justin Henderson ’16 drained eight on two different occasions.

Another Season-High for Harkins

Not only was Harkins seven makes from downtown a season high, his 21 points against the Hawks are the most scored by an Elmira player in a true road game this season. Harkins scored 24 earlier this season on a neutral court against Chatham University, the same game that Gino Leonardi ’16 dropped 28.

Henderson Hits 100th Career Three

Time-Result After going 0-for-4 from three-point range against Utica, Henderson bouncedL, 72-81 back in a big way the following afternoon, as the senior sharp-shooter buried six L, 71-83 L, 73-80 treys against Hartwick. Henderson’s six three-pointers increased his career total L, 53-72 to 100, making him the ninth Elmira player since 2000 to reach the 100 plateau. W, 93-88 (OT) Additionally, Henderson is 28 three-pointers away from cracking Elmira’s Top-10 L, 74-81 list for career threes. L, 66-80 L, 56-91 W, 62-59 Protecting the Rock L, 94-95 (OT) Although Elmira suffered back-to-back losses over the weekend, the Soaring EaL, 58-71 gles were able to limit their turnovers. EC turned the ball over just eight times L, 47-85 against the Hawks, a season low for the Elmira men. It also marked the second L, 73-77 time this season Elmira has limited its turnovers to single digits. L, 66-76 L, 70-81 6:00 p.m. Scouting the Highlanders 6:00 p.m. Houghton College enters tonight’s Empire 8 Conference bout with a 6-8 over6:00 p.m. all record and a 1-5 mark in conference play. The Highlanders began the 20151:00 p.m. 16 campaign playing some of its best basketball, going 4-1 in their opening five 6:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. games. Since then, Houghton has posted a 2-7 record, much of that having to do 6:00 p.m. with the Highlanders dropping its first five conference games of the season. How6:00 p.m. ever, Houghton should be fairly confident heading into Tuesday night’s contest 6:00 p.m. after claiming an eight-point win on the road against Utica, 91-83. Houghton’s 2:00 p.m. TBA offense is a four-headed attack, led by junior swingman Phil Pellegrino and his TBA 15.3 points per game average. The majority of Pellegrino’s damage this season has been done from beyond the arc, as he leads the team with 38 three-point makes. Also keep an eye on Johnathan Stowe, who is averaging 12.8 points and a team-leading 8.4 rebounds per game.

All-Time Series

ECSoaringEagles

Elmira and Houghton have played their fair share of games over the years, 39 to be exact. The Soaring Eagles own a decisive 34-5 advantage in the all-time series and enter tonight’s contest on a seven-game win streak against the Highlanders.
