ElmiraCollegeAthletics @ECSoaringEagles ECSportsInfo

Elmira has faced five nationally-ranked teams this season and has posted a 4-1-0 record during those meetings. With another nationally-ranked game on the horizon, it is important to see how Elmira has fared in its previous five matchups against the nation’s top teams. Shots have been nearly identical, with opponents outshooting EC by just one, 109-to-108. However, a key stat during these five games has been Elmira’s specials teams. The Soaring Eagles successfully scored on 27.8 percent of its power-play chances (5-for-18), but the real eye-opening stat during this time has been Elmira’s PK unit. EC’s penalty killers have denied their nationally-ranked opponents 92.3 percent of the time, holding teams to just two goals on 26 power-play opportunities. Additionally, the third period of games against these teams has been particularly good for the Soaring Eagles, who have outscored their opponents 6-to-1 in the final stanza.

Scouting Amherst

The Purple and White opened the 2015-16 season with eight straight wins, before playing eighth-ranked Middlebury College to a pair of ties over the weekend, bringing their overall record to 8-0-2. Amherst has shown its ability to play well on the road, as five of its eight wins have occurred away from its home rink. The unbeaten Lord Jeffs have proved to be one of the country’s top offensive teams, as they enter tonight’s contest with the nation’s fifth-highest scoring offense at 3.70 goals per game. Alex Toupal and Erin Martin have spearheaded the team’s offensive efforts with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Toupal’s 1.11 goals per game average ranks fourth in the country, while Martin’s 0.90 average is eighth.

Series History

Elmira and Amherst have faced each other 12 times over the years, with the Soaring Eagles holding a slight 7-5 lead in the all-time series. EC has won three straight against Amherst, outscoring the Lord Jeffs 12-to-4 during that time. Amherst’s last win dates back to the 2010-11 season, when the Purple and White scored a 1-0 win.

Win Streak Continues

Elmira’s win over the Norwich extended the program’s consecutive win streak to 11 games, the country’s second-longest active win streak. It also marks the second consecutive year Elmira has pieced together a double-digit win streak. Overall, Elmira has outscored its opponents 39-11 over the current stretch.

Special Teams Doing Special Things

Elmira’s special teams have been spectacular this season to say the least, as the Purple and Gold boast the country’s top combined special teams unit. The team’s efforts played a big role in Elmira’s win over Norwich last Saturday. EC went 1-for2 on power-play chances, but more impressively, Elmira held Norwich’s powerplay unit scoreless on five chances.

Top Frosh

ECSoaringEagles

Kristin Chivers ’19 has been a steady contributor from the blue line this season. The Antioch, IL, native leads the Soaring Eagles in points and assists with 12 and 10, respectively. Chivers is averaging 1.00 points per game, which ranks second in the country in defenseman scoring.
