Can’t Catch a Break
For the second year in a row, the Soaring Eagles suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Hamilton College at the buzzer. Last season, Kurt Dutcher ’14 saw his game-tying, buzzer-beating layup get waved off by the officials and earlier this week, a fall-away jumper from the Continentals’ Matt Hart downed EC 85-83 in overtime.
Roaring Comeback
Despite the loss, the Purple and Gold showed what they were made of as a team, overcoming a 21-point second half deficit to force overtime. Matt Newell ’14 and Jake Metcalf ’15 sparked the EC comeback as the duo combined for a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to single-digits, swinging the momentum in Elmira’s favor.
Five in Double Digits
Five Soaring Eagles scored double-digit points against Hamilton. Starters Neil Randolph ’15, Josh Keys ’14, and Matt Newell ’14 had 19, 13, and 10 points respectively while EC received two 10-point efforts off the bench from Chris Cassidy ’14 and Brian McDonald ’15. This is the first time that five Elmira players have produced double-digits in the same game since December 13, 2008 against Hobart College.
Flirting With a Triple-Double
EC’s do-it-all point guard, Derrick Vogel ’14, has often filled up the stat sheet this season and his performance against Hamilton was no different. The senior scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds, and handed out six assists against the Continentals while not issuing a single turnover. Making his stat line more impressive is that Vogel played much of the second half and the entire overtime with four fouls.
