2013-14 Season Tip-Off

The Elmira College men’s basketball team begins their 2013-14 campaign in New York, NY at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. This is the third time the Soaring Eagles have participated in this season-opening tournament and, oddly enough, each appearance has been separated by four years (2005, 2009, and 2013). The Purple and Gold have not had much success at the NYU TipOff Tournament in the past, losing both games of the tournament in 2005 and in 2009, but the Soaring Eagles are hoping to change that this season. EC opens the 2013 NYU Tip-Off with a matchup against #20 Morrisville State. Morrisville is coming off a season in which the Mustangs won 23 games and made a trip to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Season Opening Games

EC has had mixed success in season opening games recently, registering a 4-9 record in those games in the last 13 years. The last time an Elmira College team opened the season with a win was in 2009-10 when the men defeated Fredonia State, 83-77.

National Leaders

Derrick Vogel ’14 was one of the major reasons the EC men’s basketball team had its most successful season in six years as the point guard was 12th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Vogel set a career high in assists last season, tallying 113, while starting all 25 games.

Captains Named

Elmira College Head Coach Randie Torgalski has relied on his Class of 2014 members to produce on and off the court for their entire careers so it is only fitting that he has named each of his five seniors captain for the 2013-14 season. Kurt Dutcher ’14, Josh Keys ’14, Zak Kumor ’14, Matt Newell ’14, and Derrick Vogel ’14 will take over the captain duties for the season as they enter their final season in the Purple and Gold.

Returning Firepower

The Soaring Eagles welcome back 12 players from last year’s team including four of the top six scorers. Derrick Vogel ’14, Neil Randolph ’15, Josh Keys ’14, and Kurt Dutcher ’14 averaged a combined 30.8 points per game, just over 50 percent of EC’s overall scoring last season, and will be counted on to put up consistent scoring numbers this season.

The Number is 35.6

Derrick Vogel ’14 not only started every game last season, but he played an astonishing 35.6 minutes per game. The 35.6 minutes per game was the highest minutes per game total an EC men’s basketball player has registered in over 12 years. Reed VanDerlyke ’04 is the next closest to Vogel’s total, playing 34.5 minutes per game in the 2003-04 season.

Chasing History

Josh Keys ’14 has already solidified himself as one of the best three-point shooters in Elmira College history, but he has a chance this season to plant his name at the top of the Elmira College men’s basketball record books. Keys has 186 made three point baskets through his first three years BASKETBALL INFORMATION Head Coach ................................................ Empire 8 Leaders

Derrick Vogel ’14, David Borelli’15, and Josh Keys’14 all found their names near the top of the Empire 8 statistical leaderboards at the end of last season. Vogel was third in the conference in assists per game and fifth in the Empire 8 in steals per game, while Borelli placed eighth in blocks per game. Keys continued to show his ability to stretch defenses by knocking down over 40 percent of his three point attempts, placing him fifth in the conference in three point shooting percentage.

Old Stomping Grounds

Head Coach Randie Torgalski will return to NYU for just the second time since leaving his old team in 2008. Torgalski spent four years as an assistant coach for the Violets before coming to EC, helping guide NYU to a 72-34 record and three appearances in the ECAC Metro Division III Tournament.

Home Sweet Home

The Soaring Eagles enjoyed most of their success last season at Speidel Gymnasium, posting a 5-6 record at home. The 5-6 record was the best record an Elmira College men’s basketball team has achieved since the 2003-04 season when the Soaring Eagles went 5-7 at Speidel Gymnasium. The Purple and Gold start this season with three away games, but return home for their home opener on November 23rd.

All-Time vs. Morrisville

Saturday’s first round matchup with Morrisville State will mark the first time ever that EC has competed against the Mustangs.

All-Time vs. Drew

EC and Drew University have only met one previous time with the Soaring Eagles coming away victorious, but the two teams have not squared-off in at least 14 years.

All-Time vs. NYU

The Soaring Eagles have not had much luck against NYU throughout their 40-plus year history, falling to the Violets each of the three times the two teams have faced each other.

Coach Torgalski vs. NYU

Coach Torgalski was not able to get in the win column against his former team, falling 49-54 to NYU at the 2009 NYU Tip-Off.
