Put it on the Board

At 2-3, the Soaring Eagles are off to their best start in five years. Elmira’s two wins this weekend were the first victories in the month of November since the 2010-11 season, and the first time EC has picked up two wins in the month of November since the 2008-09 season.

Luck of the Irish?

Neil Randolph ’15 has been the most consistent scorer for the Purple and Gold this season, scoring double-digit points in every game, but he took his game to another level over the weekend. The forward posted a career-high, 32 points in EC’s 74-64 win over Hilbert College, and followed that up with a game-high 27 points in Sunday’s 79-65 win over Fredonia State.

Not in Five Years

Randolph’s 32 points is the most points scored by an Elmira College player since the 2008-09 season when former 1,000 point scorer Bobby DiPiazza ’11 posted 32 points in the final game of that season.

Career Milestone

After hitting his fourth three-pointer of the game against Hilbert College, Josh Keys ’14 hit a milestone that only one other EC men’s basketball player has reached, 200 three-point baskets made. He currently sits in second place on Elmira’s all-time list for career threepoint buckets.

Randolph in the E8

Through the first five games of the season, Randolph has solidified himself as one of the dominant players in the Empire 8 Conference. He is second in the conference in points per game (21.2), second in three-point buckets made (14), and first in free throw attempts (34).

Second Half Scoring

Despite trailing at halftime in both games this weekend, EC came away with convincing victories after putting up impressive second half numbers. The Soaring Eagles posted 45 points in the second half of both wins over the weekend, the first time an Elmira team had consecutive second halves of 40-plus points since EC scored 44 and 48 in wins over Houghton College and Hartwick College last season.

Production From the Bench

Elmira’s win over Fredonia would not have been possible without key contributions from their bench. John Mullane ’16 provided the Soaring Eagles with quality minutes in the paint, pulling down eight rebounds, tying a career high for the second-year forward. Brian McDonald ’15 provided the offense, scoring seven timely points, including a momentum building three-point play at the 12:33 mark of the second half which gave EC their first lead in over five minutes.

Flirting with the Triple-Double

In Elmira’s 14 point win over Fredonia State, Derrick Vogel ’14 finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists - only a few stats away from the coveted triple-double. The closest he has come to reaching the mark came in last year’s season finale against Utica when he totaled 16 points, 12 assists and six boards.

The Floor General

Vogel has upped his level of play in Elmira’s last two games, recording seven assists in both games. He is second in the Empire 8 Conference in assists per game (4.8) as well as assist-turnover ratio (2.7).

to matching the eight-game stretch Bobby DiPiazza ’11 had to open the 2008-09 season, but the forward has a ways to go to equal the 13-game streak that Micah Owens ’06 put together to start the 2005-06 season.

Defensive Effort

After giving up 18 first half points to Fredonia’s leading scorer, Tyrone Clark, the Elmira defense held Clark to just four points on 1-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Yeomen are averaging 61.3 points per game through their first four contests, going 0-4 to open the season. Oberlin has two players averaging double-digits in Geoff Simpson and Miles Gueno. Simpson leads the team with 10.5 points per game while Gueno is close behind with 10.3. Simpson is also the team’s leading rebounder with 7 boards per contest.

Key to Victory

One major stat to keep an eye on in this matchup is turnovers. Oberlin has struggled to hold on to the ball this season, averaging 18.5 turnovers per game compared to Elmira’s 11.2 per contest.
