Season-Opening Games

Elmira has had mild success in season-opening games over the last 14 seasons, posting a 4-10 record since 2000-01. EC has not been as fortunate as of late as they have not won a season-opening game since 200910 when the Purple and Gold defeated Fredonia State at home, 83-77.

One for the Record Books

A breakout season for Neil Randolph ’15 put his 2013-14 season amongst some of the best EC men’s basketball single-season performances of all-time. His 18.4 points per game ranked seventh for best scoring average in a season, he ranked ninth in total points scored in a season with 459, fifth in made free throws with 118, and fifth in free throw percentage, knocking down 85.5 percent of his attempts.

A 10 Points per Game Jump

Randolph’s 18.4 points per game average marked a 10.5 points per game improvement from 2012-13. That increase is the fourth largest points per game increase from season-to-season in Elmira College history, trailing former EC standouts Reggie Rollins ’88, Corrin Jackson ’03, and Ryan Bennett ’01, who saw their scoring averages increase by 13.6, 12.6, and 10.7 points per game, respectively. What separates Randolph’s performance, however, is that Randolph is the only player of the group who was a starter the year before the increase as Rollins, Jackson, and Bennett all came off the bench in the year prior to their breakout seasons.

Third in the Empire 8

Neil Randolph ’15 burst onto the scene last year, leading the Soaring Eagles with an 18.4 points per game average. Randolph ranked third in the Empire 8 Conference in scoring average and is the conference’s returning leading scorer.

The Number is 41.9

Neil Randolph ’15 knocked down 57 three-pointers last season in 136 attempts. That equates to a 41.9 percent success rate, which is the highest three-point percentage from an Elmira player with at least 100 attempts in 13 years. Ryan Bennett ’01 made 71 three-pointers with a percentage of 43.6 in 2000-01, but he was even better the season before, setting the Elmira College men’s basketball record for three-point percentage at 49.7 as he made 71 of his 143 three point attempts in 1999-00.

Defense Rules

Stingy defense has become a staple of Coach Torgalski’s teams over the years and this year will be no different with length and athleticism at every position. EC ranked second in the Empire 8 Conference in scoring defense as they allowed 69.1 points per game, just 0.1 points per game behind conference leader Nazareth College.

Long Time, No See

Saturday’s matchup will be the 13th time Elmira and Oswego State have met throughout the histories of the two programs, but the first meeting in at least 13 years. EC has a 7-5 record against the Lakers in that time.
