Match Notes Last Time Out: Elmira enters Thursday night’s matchup with UC Santa Cruz with a 5-5 overall record after winning, and losing, a pair of matches at the Thiel College Invitational. He also posted a pair of 30-plus assist matches en route to being named to the Thiel College All-Tournament Team. Way Out in Front: Through Elmira’s first 10 games, Erik Griffin ’16 has shown that he is more than capable of carrying the load offensively for the Soaring Eagles. In just eight matches, Griffin has logged a UVC-leading 109 kills, which are 23 more than the next closest UVC player. Home Opener: Today’s game against UC Santa Cruz will be Elmira’s first home contest of the 2015 season. Match Notes A Look at the Banana Slugs: UC Santa Cruz opens their East Coast trip against Elmira College with a 6-2 overall record. Of UC Santa Cruz’s two losses, only one has come against an NCAA Division III institution, Hope College in five sets, while the other defeat came against Division I powerhouse, Stanford University. Home Bodies: Of UC Santa Cruz’s eight matches this season, only two of them have been played away from home, with the Banana Slugs going 1-1 in those two games. UC Santa Cruz has not had a great deal of success in true road games over the last three seasons, as the Banana Slugs own a 7-11 road record dating back to the 2013 season. Young Guns: The Banana Slugs are led on offense this season by second-year talent Jake Howard ’17 and first-year standout Lake Merchen ’18. Howard leads UC Santa Cruz with 74 kills while Merchen is a close second with 70 kills. First-Year Setter: UC Santa Cruz has relied on the help of a pair of rookie setters in Evan Kittle ’18 and Ryan Mclaughlin ’18. Kittle has totaled 221 assists in seven outings while Mclaughlin has 47. Although Kittle has seen more time this season, look for Mclaughlin to make an appearance as he served as the Banana Slugs’ primary setter against Stanford University. Series History: UC Santa Cruz and Elmira have faced each other twice in the last four years, with both teams splitting matches. UC Santa Cruz has the most recent victory in the series, a five-set win that took place during the 2014 season.
