Last Time Out

Elmira erupted offensively against Fredonia State as the Soaring Eagles defeated the Blue Devils, 7-2. Andrew Ciampichini ’15 led the Soaring Eagles offensively with two goals and an assist while Sal Magliocco ’17 made 43 saves in net for the Purple and Gold. EC’s seven goals eclipses their previous season-high of four, which had been done three separate times this season.

Coach Aaron Saul ’98

Now in his sixth season at the helm of the Elmira College men’s ice hockey program, Coach Saul is sitting on 99 career wins, 80 of which have occurred during his tenure with the Soaring Eagles. Coach Saul is also one of just six coaches in EC program history, and one of just three coaches with multiple ECAC West Conference Tournament titles.

Special Teams Seal The Win

In the 7-2 win against Fredonia State, Elmira went 2-for-5 on the power-play and went 5-of-6 on the penalty kill. To add to the two extra-man goals, EC also scored two shorthanded goals in the victory. This is the first time EC’s special teams have scored four goals since January 12th, 2013 when Elmira scored four power-play goals in a 9-4 win over Morrisville State.

Back On Track

The Soaring Eagles snapped a three-game skid December 2nd when the EC men defeated Fredonia State, 7-2. Elmira’s record is now 3-41 overall and a 2-2-1 mark inside the ECAC West. In Elmira’s four losses this season, three have been by only one goal while the other was a two goal loss.

Elmira scored two short-handed goals in the 7-2 win over Fredonia State. This is the first multiple short-handed goal game since November 9th, 2012 when EC scored two in the 4-3 win over SUNY Geneseo.

Jarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 leads the Soaring Eagles offensively this season with 10 points off of two goals and a team-leading eight assists. He has averaged 1.0 assists per game, ranking him tied for 14th in the nation.

Taulien On The Power-Play

Alexander Taulien ’17 has capitalized on three man-up opportunities this season. His three power-play goals ranks him ninth in the nation in total power-play goals.

Scouting Nazareth

The Golden Flyers enter the weekend with a 4-4-2 overall record and a 3-1-1 mark inside the ECAC West Conference. Nazareth is coming off a 1-1 overtime tie against SUNY Geneseo. Don Olivieri ’16 and Ben Blasko ’17 lead the Golden Flyers offensively with nine points apiece this season. Ed Zdolshek ’16 has played in all but two games in net this season for Nazareth. In seven appearances, he is 4-2-1 and has made 207 saves.

Scouting Wesleyan

The Cardinals enter the weekend with a 2-4-0 overall record and a 1-3-0 mark in NESCAC play. James Kline ’17 leads the Cardinals offensively with eight points off of five goals and three assists, while James Albrect ’15 has set up the attack with five assists. Defensively, Dawson Sprigings ’17 has been the go-to-guy as he has a 2-3-1 record with 154 saves, a .906 save percentage, and a 3.22 goals against average.

Career 1,000 on the Horizon

In 36 career games, Ryan deMelo ’15 has produced 964 saves. He is only 36 saves away from reaching the 1,000 save mark. With 964 career saves, deMelo is 260 saves away from moving into a two-way tie for 11th place on Elmira College’s all-time list for career saves with former AllAmerican Tony Mongillo ’88.

Following the Conference Title

The Purple and Gold have had a fair amount of success in years following an ECAC West Tournament title. In nine seasons following a conference crown, Elmira has had eight winning seasons, four of which were 20-plus win seasons. Elmira also qualified for four NCAA Tournaments, making three NCAA Quarterfinal appearances, and earned one NCAA Third Place finish.
