Last Time Out

The Soaring Eagles have enjoyed nearly two weeks off of competition heading into tonight’s ECAC West opener against the Red Dragons. Elmira picked up a convincing 7-2 win on the road against former No. 4 nationally ranked Norwich University in the consolation game of the East-West Hockey Classic. EC scored four unanswered goals to open the game, setting the tone for what would be one of Elmira’s biggest wins over the Cadets in program history. Olivia Nyström ’16 and Meghan Fonfara ’18 paced the Elmira offense with three points apiece, as each player logged a pair of goals and an assist.

Historical Win

Elmira’s five-goal defeat of Norwich is the program’s largest margin of victory in the all-time series since November 2, 2008, when the Purple and Gold blanked the Cadets, 8-0. Additionally, the win is also Elmira’s most lopsided road win against the Cadets in program history.

ECSoaringEagles

Tonight’s contest marks the first home game of the 2015-16 season for the Soaring Eagles. EC has historically excelled in their first game at the Murray Athletic Center, posting a 13-1 record in 14 home openers and outscoring opponents 8511. Elmira has opened at home against SUNY Cortland four times in its history, winning all three matchups by a combined score of 32-2.

PK Unit Thriving

The Soaring Eagles have gone on the penalty kill 10 times through EC’s first two games of the season and have not allowed one goal during that time. Elmira is one of eight teams in the country with at least one game played and zero powerplay goals allowed. Additionally, Elmira has scored three shorthanded goals this year, tied for the most SH goals in the country.

Top Frosh

Kristin Chivers ’19 has enjoyed a great start to her Elmira career. The rookie from Illinois produced four points on one goal and three assists in Elmira’s five-goal win over Norwich. Chivers’ four-point performance is the first by an EC rookie since 2013-14, when Johanna Eidensten ’16 also logged four against Chatham University. Also, Chivers is averaging 2.00 points per game, which is tied for sixth-most in the nation in rookie scoring.

Swedish Point Streak

Fourth-year talent and assistant captain, Olivia Nyström ’16, enters tonight’s contests on a four-game point streak. Nyström’s streak dates back to last season’s NCAA Tournament. During her four-game stretch, she has totaled six points with her only multi-point effort coming in EC’s most recent victory over Norwich.

The Nyström Effect

Nyström has registered at least one point in 37 games for the Soaring Eagles throughout her career. Elmira has seen a great deal of success when the Swedish national is able to find the back of the net, as the Purple and Gold are 31-5-1 in those contests, including a 21-3-0 mark in the last three years.

Fonfara Fitting In

Second-year standout Meghan Fonfara ’18 found her scoring touch against Norwich, as she finished with three points on two goals and one assist. Her threepoint effort is a career high for the Buffalo area native - Fonfara registered six points the entire season in 2014-15.

Scouting the Red Dragons

SUNY Cortland has four games under its belt through the early portion of the season, going 1-2-1 in those games with an 0-1-1 mark in ECAC West play. Cortland’s lone win of the season occurred on Halloween, when the Red Dragons trounced New England College, 6-2. The Red Dragons will be looking to get back into the win column after going 0-1-1 against Oswego State last weekend. Cortland is led by Laura Drew, who boasts a team-leading four points on a teamhigh four goals. Defensively, Cortland has used both Deanna Meunier and Kell Farinella in the cage this season. Meunier has seen the most time between the pipes and leads the team with 80 saves, while Farinella owns the team’s lone victory.
