It is the fourth consecutive year that the Elmira College women’s ice hockey team will open its season in Northfield, VT at the East-West Classic. The East-West Classic has quickly become the premier seasonopening tournament in the country. The East-West Classic pits the top two teams from the ECAC East and ECAC West divisions against each other and this year, each of the four schools represented are ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO Poll released on October 28th. The Soaring Eagles open the East-West Classic with a matchup against the #9 nationally ranked Valiants of Manhattanville on November 2nd and then have a date the following day with host, Norwich University, who is ranked #5 in the USCHO Poll. The Purple and Gold’s participation in this event could be a precursor for another title run in their 13th season as the last three NCAA Division III National Champions have played in the East-West Classic.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.
