After a few weeks against non-conference opponents, the Soaring Eagles return to their ECAC West schedule with a pair of conference games this weekend at Oswego State. EC has a 6-0-0 record in conference play this season and with 12 points, the women enter this weekend in third place behind Plattsburgh State (16 points) and their opponent, Oswego State (13 points).

For the Second Straight Week

Lisa Marshall ’14 recorded her third shutout of the year against Stevenson University last Saturday as EC picked up a 5-0 victory. Her performance between the pipes earned her a second consecutive ECAC West Goaltender of the Week award, the third time she has received the honor this season.

Starting Strong

The first period has been kind to the Soaring Eagles, especially as of late, as EC has recorded the most number of goals in the first period than either of the other periods. At Stevenson, Elmira held a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period, marking the second time this season that the women put four goals on the scoreboard in the opening frame. The other instance occurred on November 15th in an 8-3 win at SUNY Potsdam.

Three Point Performances

Both Ashley Ryan ’15 and Tanis Lamoureux ’14 recorded three point games last time out against Stevenson. It is the third game this season in which both Ryan and Lamoureux have recorded three points in the same game, the others coming against Utica College on November 9th and against Williams College on November 23rd.

Marshall’s On a Roll

Lisa Marshall ’14 has played extremely well over the last three games, all EC wins, allowing two total goals in over 179 minutes between the pipes. With her recent performances, Marshall has dropped her season goals against average by 0.22, going from 1.49 to 1.27 GAA. She now ranks fifth in the nation in goals against average.

100 Points in Sight

After her three point effort against Stevenson, Lamoureux now has 90 points in her career and is 10 points shy of becoming the eighth player in EC history to join the 100-point club and the first since former standout Jenna McCall ’10.

Point Streak Continues

Lamoureux has recorded at least one point in each of the last nine games. This is the longest point streak of her four-year career and the second longest from an EC skater this season.

One of Two in the Top-5

EC is one of two institutions in the country to rank in the top-five in both offensive and defensive scoring. The Soaring Eagles rank fifth in the nation with 4.00 goals scored per game while ranking fourth in the country in scoring defense, allowing 1.53 goals per game. The only other institution in the top-five of each category is ECAC West rival Plattsburgh State.

Recording 40-Plus Shots

EC recorded 46 shots against Stevenson, just one short of their seasonhigh. Overall, the Soaring Eagles have tallied 40-plus shots six times this season, carrying a 6-0-0 record in those games.

The Soaring Eagles hold an undefeated 13-0-1 all-time record over Oswego State in a matchup that dates back to the 2007-08 season. EC has won five consecutive games and will look to make it seven over their ECAC West opponent this weekend. Oswego State is one of six programs that Elmira has faced at least 10 times and has yet to lose to in its 13 year history.

Oswego State This Season

The Lakers enter this weekend of play with a 10-4-1 overall record and a 6-1-1 record in ECAC West competition, putting them one point ahead of EC in the conference standings. Oswego State is coming off consecutive 3-0 shutout victories over Buffalo State on January 18th and 19th, their fifth and sixth shutouts of the season. Defense has been key for the Lakers this season as they rank second in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 1.20 goals per game.

Lakers to Watch

The Oswego State offense is a balanced attack as all but one skater has recorded a point this season for the Lakers. Melissa Seamont is the only player with double digit points with 10 on the year. Seamont is tied for the team lead with five goals while also chipping in five assists. The assist leader is Ashley Lyman, who has six through 15 games.

Options in Net

On the defensive end, Elmira could see any one of the three Laker goaltenders who have seen time this season, but all signs point to Catherine Cote starting between the pipes. The senior has recorded the most minutes of the three goaltenders (481) and holds a 1.25 goals against average, which ranks her third in the country. Cote also has three of the team’s six shutouts. The other two goaltenders, Bridget Smith and Tori Trovato, hold a combined 5-1-1 record while holding a 0.99 goals against average.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

New USCHO Poll

The top four stayed the same in the most recent USCHO poll, with the Soaring Eagles coming in at number three. EC will have the opportunity to play against No. 1 Plattsburgh State in a couple weeks.
