The Soaring Eagles were able to rebound from their 0-1-1 showing at the East-West Classic by defeating ECAC West foe, Utica College, twice last weekend. EC took the first game, the women’s home opener 4-1, and then followed that performance up with a 3-1 road victory the next day. It is the 13th year in a row that the women’s ice hockey team opened their ECAC West schedule without a loss, posting a 24-0-1 record in ECAC West opening weekend games since 2001-02.

Offensive Outburst

Erin Weston ’15 had the most productive weekend of her career against Utica last weekend, tallying four points on three goals and one assist. Her four points was one more than her previous weekend high which she accomplished once in each of the last two seasons. The forward now has five points in four games this season, ranking second on the team behind Ashley Ryan ’15.

Jackson in November

Head Coach Dean Jackson ’03 continued his success in the month of November after last weekend’s sweep of Utica College. With those two wins, Jackson’s record in the month of November is now 9-2-1. His women posted a 7-1-0 mark in 2012-13 and are 2-1-1 this season.

ECAC West Recognition

After helping the Soaring Eagles pick up a weekend sweep of Utica College, Erin Weston ’15 and Lisa Marshall ’14 earned spots on the ECAC West Weekly Honor Roll. Weston led the team with four points on three goals and one assist, while Marshall held strong between the pipes, recording 56 saves while allowing just two goals.

When Weston Scores

The numbers show that if Erin Weston ’15 can get into the mix offensively, the Soaring Eagles have a pretty good chance of winning. Weston has found the back of the net in 14 games throughout her two-plus year career at EC and in each one of those games, the Purple and Gold have come out victorious. Not only are the Soaring Eagles 14-0-0 when the forward scores, but the women have outscored their opponents 73-11 in those games.

All-Time vs. Potsdam

EC has enjoyed a great amount of success against the Bears throughout the five year history of this matchup, carrying a 10-1-0 record into this weekend’s games. The Soaring Eagles won the first eight games of this series until falling to Potsdam in the 2011-12 ECAC West Tournament Quarterfinals.

Coach Jackson vs. Potsdam

In his first year at the helm of the Purple and Gold, Coach Jackson guided his team to a season sweep of Potsdam, winning both regular season games by a combined score of 13-1.

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.

Potsdam This Season

SUNY Potsdam comes into this weekend’s games with a 2-1-1 overall record and a 1-1-1 record in the ECAC West. The Bears picked up their first conference points last weekend when they hosted Oswego State. Potsdam defeated the Lakers 3-2 on Saturday, November 9th but was only able to muster a 1-1 tie on Sunday. Amanda Lucky ’14 left her footprint on both games as she recorded four points on one goal and three assists.

Potsdam’s Scoring Leaders

The Bears have six players who have scored this season, led by a set of twins in Brittany Lucky ’14 and Amanda Lucky ’14. Brittany Lucky has six assists for six points while her sister, Amanda, has two goals and three assists for five points. Close behind the Lucky twins is Jordan Ott ’17 who leads the team with three goals and has also added an assist for four points in her debut season.

Potsdam Netminder

Potsdam has given each start this season to new goaltender, Alexane Rodrigue ’16. Rodrigue came to Potsdam this season after spending her freshman year at Division I Bemidji State and has helped the Bears jump out to a 2-1-1 record. The sophomore has 136 saves on a .907 save percentage and has compiled a 3.93 goal against average in four games.

From Soaring Eagles to Bears

Elmira College has several alums scattered throughout the collegiate coaching ranks, including SUNY Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green ’80. Green was a four-year member of the men’s ice hockey team and made two trips to the NCAA Final Four while at Elmira College. He has been at the head of the women’s ice hockey program at Potsdam since its inception in 2007-08 and has been the only coach in Bears women’s ice hockey history, dating back to the inaugural season in 2008-09.

New USCHO Poll

The EC women’s ice hockey team rebounded in the latest USCHO Poll as the Soaring Eagles moved up a spot, from fifth to fourth, after defeating Utica twice over the weekend. EC still trails the team that gave the women their only blemish of the 2013-14 campaign, Norwich University, but the Cadets will visit the Murray Athletic Center on January 10th for a revenge game.
