Conference Opening Wins
Elmira’s nine point win on the road against Nazareth College marked the first time EC has opened Empire 8 Conference play with a win since the 2007-08 season. Also, Elmira’s win over St. John Fisher College marked the first time since the 2005-06 season that EC has opened conference play with two consecutive victories.
Great Start to 2014
The Elmira women opened the New Year with a pair of Empire 8 Conference wins over Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College. Elmira’s win over Nazareth upped EC’s record to 8-5 in the first games of the New Year over the last 13 seasons.
Best Start Since 2006-07
With a 6-2 overall record, the Soaring Eagles are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season when the Purple and Gold opened the year 7-2. The 2006-07 women finished the season with a 21-7 record, Elmira’s third 20-plus win season and also EC’s second best overall record in program history.
Clutch Plays Down the Stretch
Against St. John Fisher, captains Jessica Zoltowski’14 and Liz Forrest’14 made a handful of key plays down the stretch to help seal the victory. First Zoltowksi converted an and-one opportunity to tie the game at 59 apiece with just 26 seconds to play. Then, on the very next possession, Forrest slid into the paint to take a charge and give the ball back to the Soaring Eagles with a chance to win the game. On the final possession, the pair would hook-up on a play which brought Forrest to the charity stripe for the game-winning free throws.
