Left to right: Don Bruckner, Maynard Londborg, Roald Amundsen, Robert Fortuine Alaskans grieve yet another great loss, but not like those who have no hope. The picture above was taken of four men who were close friends and who have greatly impacted Alaska for the sake of the Kingdom of God! It would seem the Lord aligned the men in the above picture in the order He was going to call them home. Now they are all together...again! Oh, if we could only go on Youtube to see that wonderful welcoming of

CMJ Grant Make a Difference in Youths’ Lives!
The ECCAK mission is: To make disciples of Christ through a diverse culturally relevant witness by healthy missional churches and their supporting organizations.
By Nathan Hobbs, Youth Worker at Nome
In the spring of 2008 God placed a burden on our hearts for a summer trip for our youth. God confirmed that call when the ECCAK General Council granted our request for a $10,000 matching grant. It was just the beginning of what miracles He would work in our behalf over the next months. From last summer until now, we have seen solid growth in the lives of those involved. Our family, as well as seven youth from Nome made the journey to the lower 48. Once there we spent four weeks of intensive training, traveling, and ministering through song and testimony. The Lord beautifully orchestrated opportunities both for the team to influence others, and for them to be influenced by wise and Godly mentors. Their lives are now impacting their homes and communities in a deeper way. One young lady had never even left the state before this trip. Through the influences of this summer, she has felt called of the Lord to return here to Nome and care for her four younger siblings, all in their early teens. From cleaning to cooking to attending their school parent/ teacher conferences, she is seeking to daily lay down her life to care for them because of a difficult family situation. Her deepest desire is to see her whole family won to the Lord. She was also influential in her best friend giving her life to Christ just this last week. Her life is not the only one impacted. We see a deepening maturity in each member of the team. We have been blessed to find them serving without recognition, praying for lost family members, being bold in their witness in our community, and passionate about God's Kingdom and their role in furthering it. Praise God! All of this was His calling, His provision, His blessing, and all the glory is His. Cont. p. 3

Pray: Our bi-monthly newsletter, “Chilling News”, is full of stories about the people and ministry of ECCAK throughout the state. It also has a daily prayer calendar. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please let us know. Encouragement; Writing and/or calling those who serve in the bush is a great ministry! Want to adopt a church or a pastor? Ask for a prayer card of a pastor. Mission Teams: There are often times when we have need for teams of people to come and join with a local church, camp, college, youth group, etc. For a specific construction project or outreach event. Volunteers: The ECCAK office needs volunteers to assist in administration, grant writing, special projects, etc. Financial: God often calls people to give to ECCAK beyond the normal local church tithe or churches to place ECCAK in their mission budget. Some are led to leave a gift through estate planning to carry on the work in Alaska into the future. Credit Card Donations: ECCAK can now receive donations via credit cards. The perforated tab on the Prayer Calendar allows for this giving option. Also, you can contact Sara Scoles at the ECCAK office (907) 694-6348 and she will be happy to assist you. Teachers or Nurses: Christian teachers or nurses often come to Bush Alaska as “missionaries” and serve in the local Covenant church during off hours. Pastors/Youth Workers: Often we have empty pulpits and are in need of pastors, short and long-term. Many villages have no one reaching out to the youth. Donate Air Miles: Many people accumulate free air miles. Please consider donating some to ECCAK to help a bush pastor and family get away for some R & R.
The ECCAK Vision is: To challenge and assist every local church to become one that GROWS… G = God‟s Word R = Relationships O = Outreach W = Worship S = Service The Evangelical Covenant Church of Alaska [ECCAK] is a non-conference “field” of the Covenant Church of America. We are dependent on the gifts from churches and people to carry out our mission for Christ‟s sake in Alaska. Field Director: Rodney J. Sawyer Associate Field Director: Nathan Toots Office Manager: Sara Scoles
Things to ponder… ~ Consciousness: That annoying time between naps. ~ To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research. ~ When all is said and done, more is said than done. ~ Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot. ~ Borrow money from a pessimist, they don't expect it back. ~ Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your mouth is moving. ~ If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

physician and emergency room physician at the Alaska Native Medical Center, then spent another 12 years as a volunteer operating a weekly skin clinic at the hospital. Since 1989, Dr. Fortuine taught first-year medical students at the University of Alaska Anchorage as part of the WWAMI Program of the University of Washington. He was also adjunct (later affiliate) professor of health sciences at UAA and clinical professor of family medicine at the University Of Washington School of Medicine. In his later years, he was known mainly as a medical historian of Alaska and the arctic regions. He wrote six books, edited and co-edited two proceedings of international conferences, and collaborated on three major published bibliographies on the health of the indigenous peoples of North America. In addition, he published many papers, notably in the areas of the 14
impact of disease on Alaskan history, Alaska Native traditional medicine, and medical aspects of arctic exploration. Over the years he was presented with many awards, including several Public Health Service medals, the John Phillips Award "for service to the public good," the Trudeau Award, the Jack Hildes Medal, and an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Alaska. He was named Alaska Historian of the Year in 1990 for his book "Chills and Fever: Health and Disease in the Early History of Alaska" and again in 2005 for his book "Must We All Die? Alaska's Enduring Struggle with Tuberculosis." He was also a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America, a founding member of the American Society for Circumpolar Health, and a co-founder of the Amundsen Educational Center in Soldotna (a Christian vocational school for Alaska Natives).
The young Leaders 4 Life students serve communion to all. Some Bible scholars claim that most of Jesus‟ disciples were probably teenagers! Imagine that! Jesus actually entrusted the gospel in the hands of young people...and the message is still going around the world because of a small group of young people. When we do not get out of the way and turn ministry over to them, it is like holding them on bondage, just like when the Hebrews were held by the Egyptians. We need to let go of our guarded positions of authority and power and hand the baton over so that our young people can run the race. When we hang on and refuse to entrust like Jesus did with the disciples, we are somewhat like the Pharaoh. But we thank God for those who believe on our young people! There are more and more youth who no longer want to be served but are ready to serve; young people who don‟t just want to be taught, but are ready to teach; teens who no longer just want to be led around, but are ready to lead! When will we let this people group go?
Grant cont.
It was a huge undertaking to spend that month of travel. Gas soared above $4 a gallon, and airfare was expensive. The grant that was so marvelously provided was to us a provision from God's hand. We are thankful for the investment made in the lives of these young people. Eternity will show the extent of the harvest, and we are trusting and praying for 100 fold.
Word Play and Mind Messin’ The nuclear physicist took a vacation for a fission trip. The world's full of apathy, but who cares? Today is the day for decisive action! ... Or is it? Cole's Law: Thinly sliced cabbage. For those people who like peace and quiet: a phoneless cord.

Speakers Bless ECCAK at the 2009 Annual Meeting One of God‟s names is Jehovah Jira, which means, “God Provides.” That manifested itself so clearly at the ECCAK 2009 Annual Meeting. The kaleidoscope of spiritual light, we believe, was shed on many hearts. The theme of the ECCAK Annual Meeting was “Racial Righteousness.” This is not a “term” you will find in the Scriptures together, but both are concepts we find in the Bible. Certainly, when Jesus met the Samaritan Woman at the well, we see His righteousness shine through as He ministers to a “Samaritan woman” that others have cast aside.
Debbie Blue
Dick Lucco
All we received was a “taste” since both Debbie Blue and Dick Lucco were not given the time needed for a full course meal on the matter. But we did “taste and see that the Lord is good” as they brought us His precepts on the matter. Melanie Smith, the ECCAK Ava Coordinator, also did some training to the pastors and leaders in how to help the abused.

Finally, Lance Kramer and Curtis Ivanoff challenged the youth in 2 areas: Surrendering to Christ by Lance and Going Deeper with Christ from Curtis.

We thank God for these sisters and brothers who served us so well! Jehovah Jira indeed! Rom 12:6 –9 God in his kindness gave each of us different gifts. If your gift is speaking God's word, make sure what you say agrees with the Christian faith. If your gift is serving, then devote yourself to serving. If it is teaching, devote yourself to teaching. If it is encouraging others, devote yourself to giving encouragement. If it is sharing, be generous. If it is leadership, lead enthusiastically. If it is helping people in need, help them cheerfully.

Who is this man? He was leaving the ECCAK 2009 Annual Meeting when someone took his picture! Is he the Zorro of the Arctic? The Long Ranger of the Tundra? The Robin Hood of the reindeer herders? No, it is probably none of these. You see, April on the west coast of Alaska is still winter. He was simply getting ready to ride his snogo back to the village where he lives.

Stunned Recipient of Daniel Savetilik Award The tears were very hard to hold back for Alan Finifrock as he accepts the coveted Daniel Savetilik Award on behalf of both he and his wife Sharon at the 2009 ECCAK Annual Meeting in Hooper Bay. Pastor Harvey Fiskeaux of Nome, chair of the ECCAK General Council, presents the plaque to Alan. But Pastor Harvey made everyone in attendance promise to keep this a secret! Why? Because Alan‟s beloved wife Sharon was unable to attend and share in the time of honor. Therefore, Alaska Christian College President, Dr. Keith Hamilton, planned on surprising Sharon at the graduation of the ACC students in May. Can you keep a secret like that? Time will tell. The Finifrocks spent 8 years at Alaska Christian College [ACC], 5 years in Toksook Bay, additional years in the Copper River basin. Simultaneous to their service at ACC, Al has served as a volunteer with Amundsen Educational Center for the past 8 years. Alan and Sharon have been deeply involved in Alaska ministries over their 20 plus years in the state, coming from Duluth, MN originally. Since the inception of ACC, they have both worked tirelessly to serve the students and staff of ACC as well as guests that have come yearly to the campus. As retired school teachers, they have taught and served in two school systems in the state as both teachers and school administrators. In each location they have served, they have been involved in the local church whether it be Covenant or not. Since coming to ACC when it was first planted, Alan has served full time for five years as the 6
Director of Operations completely as a volunteer with no compensation given. He oversaw maintenance and vehicles, mentored students, supervised summer work teams, developed the summer work projects, initiated many outdoor recreational opportunities for the students including building the ACC ice rink, taught Physical education, driver‟s training, and has had many students and staff in their home. Alan continues part time now as Director of Special Projects. Sharon has also been full and part time with her main emphasis on being the matriarch of the ACC family and Librarian. With much to her credit as a school teacher, she has used those skills to teach English, mentor students, and open her heart and home to the ACC family. When there was no library, Sharon developed and initiated what we have todaya 10,000 volume library with all the materials and systems to be accepted by those who accredit the college. She has worked hard to keep a home going in MN as well as AK. Today, she continues part time as librarian and even with some physical challenges, manages to be disciplined about her work as unto the Lord. Both Alan and Sharon exemplify the servant‟s heart. Many have said that when they retire, they wish to be able to serve like the Finifrock couple has done so graciously and with such charisma. They are leaders, they are teachers, and they are the best friends any Alaskan could seek after. Because of their wisdom and wealth of experience, ECCAK and especially ACC are blessed and honored to have them on loan to us from God for such a time as this.
Testimony from ACC Student Michelle Fancher I was born and raised in Bethel, Alaska and had moved to Nome for two years and then moved to Anchorage to graduate high school. Moving twice made it hard to make friends. My parents divorced when I was nine years old and the custody went to my dad. I was abused and when I was 7 years old, I thought it was normal but it wasn„t. One day my mother found out about it and stopped it. I am very grateful she had because it hurt physically and emotionally. My mother was always pouring out her love to us. Out of the five children, I was the fat one. Others teased me about it, even though it was in my genes to be overweight. Since my mother left after the divorce, I had no mother to run to about my problems while growing up. When my sister graduated and moved out just like our oldest brother did, I was the only girl in the family with two brothers to live with. I have a really bad tailbone, and it has always been tough for me in school. This physical pain caused me to become very weak and emotional. There are not too much people who understand this pain I go through but I am grateful I have met others who understand my pain. I sometimes wished I was paralyzed from the waist and down because of my pain. Right now, I would even exchange my artistic skills for a normal-pain-free tailbone. I have been in
agonizing pain for over three years every single day. I don‟t remember what it is like to have no pain for a whole day anymore. With all of this pain I was bearing I felt like I wanted to kill myself, but I always knew where I would end up if I took my own life away and that there was a purpose in my life. Then I came to Alaska Christian College. Once here, I found out what it really meant to accept Christ into your heart, which I never had done. I really know now what a Christian is. I wanted all of my pain from the past to go away, and the ACC president, Keith Hamilton, led me to Christ on October 9th, 2008. After I accepted Christ, many of my struggles went away. With God, NOTHING is impossible. Both Keith Hamilton and the Academic Vice President of ACC, John Lommel, provided me a chair that is good for my tailbone. Thanks to them, school is no longer hard for me. I am still in pain but I‟m no longer physically tortured like I have been for the past three years. I almost left school and almost didn‟t come back because of my tail bone, but I am grateful I came back to ACC. Since I came to ACC, I‟ve been in less pain about my past and about my problems. And because of ACC, I became a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Changing Perspectives One airline passenger told his companion shortly after take-off, "Time sure changes things. See that lake down there? When I was a boy, I used to go out on it in a rowboat and fish. Every time a plane flew over I‟d wish I was in it. Now, I am in the plane and I wish I was down there fishing."

Hiding God’s Word in Your Heart 3239 words are in the Book of Ephesians NIV translation! And a young girl from Hooper Bay memorized them all! Here‟s the story: The young people of the “Leaders 4 Life” group in Hooper Bay are encouraged to memorize the Scripture. In September of 2008, Field Director Rodney Sawyer was traveling to several villages in the YK Delta, with a stop in Hooper Bay. It seemed that Alice Nanuk was very good at memorizing and was constantly asking Pastor Funk to “listen to what I memorized today!” Pastor Funk challenged her one day, “I will tell what you should do, memorize the complete Book of Ephesians and come back to me. In fact, if you memorize the whole book, I will give you $100!” Rodney, chimed in, “And ECCAK will match it!” Then along comes the 2009 ECCAK Annual meeting in Hooper Bay in April. Young Alice hits Rodney up with, “When can you listen to me quote the Book of Ephesians?” Poor Rodney, his memory had almost forgotten the challenge. So a time was set aside, and sure enough, little Alice rambled off the entire book like is was John 3:16!
Alice reciting the Book of Ephesians to Rodney Sawyer, her Field Director.
Every once in awhile, Alice would stop and pause. Then she would ask Rodney, “What verse am I on?” Rodney would say something like, “Verse 19.” That is all it took for Alice‟s keen mind to kick back into gear and she would pick up the action.
As you can tell by the picture above, Alice recited Ephesians and it was payoff time; Grant and Rodney coughed up $100 each! But we know that the real payoff for Alice [and all the other Leaders for Life team] is when she will find herself at a point in life where God‟s Word will come to mind and she will be able to follow God‟s ways. Alice, we are proud of you! Psalm 119:1-6 (NIV) 1 Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. 3 They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways. 4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. 5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! 6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. 7
