Three of our churches end the long prayerful process of searching for a new pastor.

Inside this issue:

Fairbanks Community Covenant, whose search committee was lead by Marne Rickards, called Pastor Ken Moore on July 12 after a full week of getting New Pastors’ Profiles 2 to know he and his wife Sandy.

The Scammon Bay Covenant Church, lead by church chair John Uttereyuk, brought Pastor Jason Stromstad to their village to candidate and on July 26 they voted to call him as their pastor. Jason accepted fighting back some tears of joy.

Finally, Golovin Covenant Church,, lead by church chair Craig Willoya and with the wisdom of Maggie Olson, asked Brad Olson to candidate. On August 10, the church voted to call him.

Pastor Brad had no hesitation in accepting, also trying to hold back the tears.

Jason Stromstad: Jason graduated from North Park Theological Seminary in 2008. Prior to that, he graduated from Oak Hills Bible College. He is currently in his Chaplain Residency at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. Prior to that, he served at the Sauganash Community Church in Chicago, IL as pastor intern. Jason will finish up his current commitment as Chaplin in September and is raising the support needed before moving to Scammon Bay. Jason is not a new-comer to Alaska. In the 1980’s he served at KICY in Nome. He was also assigned to KYKD in Bethel when it first started under Byron Bruckner.

Pastor John sees Jason has also spent a good deal of time at the camp in Unalakleet. He has a real Jason as one who “comes along side.” rapport with teens and children.

Brad and Julie Olson: Brad comes to Golovin on the road less traveled. His education has come from life and self-study. His church life in Battle Creek, MI has provided him with a body of believers where discipleship is important. He has fallen under the tutelage of his pastor and other staff at First Wes Church. Brad is also a pilot and mechanic, which he believes will serve him well in the State of Alaska.

Julie has been a school teacher for a number of years but has decided to stay at home ever since little Zebulon entered into the Olson Family. Zeb is 18 months old.

Julie shares her life testimony and Brad and Julie have been coming up to Golovin for seven years. The village knows Scripture while them well and they have developed a wonderful relationship with the teens and chil2

at Golovin dren. They hope to return to Golovin before the 2009 year ends, but need to finish raising their support.

Pray: Our bi-monthly newsletter, “Chilling News”, is full of stories about the people and ministry of ECCAK throughout the state. It also has a daily prayer calendar. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please let us know.

Encouragement; Writing and/or calling those who serve in the bush is a great ministry! Want to adopt a church or a pastor? Ask for a prayer card of a pastor.

Mission Teams: There are often times when we have need for teams of people to come and join with a local church, camp, college, youth group, etc. For a specific construction project or outreach event.

Volunteers: The ECCAK office needs volunteers to assist in administration, grant writing, special projects, etc.

Financial: God often calls people to give to ECCAK beyond the normal local church tithe or churches to place ECCAK in their mission budget. Some are led to leave a gift through estate planning to carry on the work in Alaska into the future.

Credit Card Donations: ECCAK can now receive donations via credit cards. The perforated tab on the Prayer Calendar allows for this giving option. Also, you can contact Sara Scoles at the ECCAK office (907) 694-6348 and she will be happy to assist you.

Teachers or Nurses: Christian teachers or nurses often come to Bush Alaska as “missionaries” and serve in the local Covenant church during off hours.

Pastors/Youth Workers: Often we have empty pulpits and are in need of pastors, short and long-term. Many villages have no one reaching out to the youth.

Donate Air Miles: Many people accumulate free air miles. Please consider donating some to ECCAK to help a bush pastor and family get away for some R & R.

CBC Blessed by Samaritan’s Purse Franklin Graham has long had an affinity with Alaska. During his rebellious days as a youth, he had his hand on the throttle of any motorcycle or air plane. He also had his foot on the sidewalks of Front Street in Nome, which hosts a number of taverns. Even during these days of running from the Lord, Alaska was embedded in his heart for a purpose. God had plans for Franklin Graham.

After the fire in Hooper Bay a few years ago, Franklin’s heart has been stirred to come along side those who live and share the gospel in Western Alaska.

Covenant Bible Camp is one such ministry.

Of course, you cannot think “Bible camp” without thinking of Chip Swanson, who has been the most prominent visionary of Bible camp for all its years. Located on the North River 10 miles outside of Unalakleet, it has played a vital role in reaching the young people of Alaska for years!

Several years ago, Dave Cunningham a spot was cleared

for a new temple under the leadership and vision of Chip Swanson. It has set empty for such a time as this… the summer of 2009, all in the Lord’s good time.

Samaritan’s Purse has seen fit to donate a new temple for the camp. “It is a facility beyond our wildest dreams” says current Camp Director Byron Bruckner. Let us all praise God from whom all blessing flow as the new temple is finished out this summer by a host of volunteers from all over the country!

A special note of appreciation needs to also go to three men who poured out “blood, sweat and tears” to see the temple come into being. They are Doug Olsen from the Harbor Covenant Church in Gig Harbor, WA, Dave Cunningham, who serves on the CBC Board and is a resident of Unalakleet, and finally, R. L. Davis, who serves with Samarian’s Purse and was project manager for the temple.

No Brains Required... is preparing to celebrate its 50th Anniversary of being on the air. At the ECC Annual Meeting in Portland this last June, a special salmon dinner was held as many gathered to kick off the celebration of God’s hand orchestrating that first broadcast on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1960! The poem on the next page was written by Pastor Greg Asimakoupoulos in tribute of the year of celebration.

Three Men in a Motel Math Puzzle Three men decided to split the cost of a hotel room. The hotel manager gave them a price of $30. The men split the bill evenly, each paying $10, and retired to their room.

ECCAK Annual Meeting will join in the KICY celebration as it is held in Nome on April 14-18, 2010. Special speakers will include ECC President, Gary Walter and Executive Director of CG&E, Dave Olson. Please mark you calendar and come to Nome for this time of praising God from Whom all blessing flow.

However, the manager realized that it was a Wednesday night, which meant the hotel had a special: rooms were only $25. He had overcharged them $5!

He promptly called the bellboy, gave him five one-dollar bills and told him to return it to the men. When the bellboy explained the situation to the men, they were so pleased at the honesty of the establishment that they promptly tipped the bellboy $2 of the $5 he had returned and each kept $1 for himself.

The Problem: Each of the three men ended up paying $9 (their original $10, minus $1 back) totalling $27, plus $2 for the bellboy makes $29. Where did the extra dollar go?

The Dawn of a New Day Just before the sun arose that drab gray Easter day, God smiled.

And the brilliance of His countenance countered the darkness that had covered the land for what seemed like an eternity.

The Creator knew what was about to dawn that day.

He would use Art to display His glory and dazzle a colorless world hung-over from a not-so-good Friday.

A world staggering in a stupor of hopelessness, attempting to sleep off its depression and imprisoned behind the bars of Front Street.

The canvas of His sovereign plan (framed by a century of pioneer missions) was about to be unveiled.

Though winter had officially passed, the snow and bitter cold mocked spring's promise.

Only the gradual increase in daylight signaled a change.

That and another signal.

A flashing beacon from a tower above the tundra called attention to a Nome phenomenon.

A simple radio station.

And that station's control room would on that Easter Sunday double as an empty tomb.

For out of that sacred space amazing grace would be heard.

It was the voice of truth announcing the good news

that Christ is risen and that His resurrection power is capable of defeating every imaginable demon of darkness that for far too long had dominated the landscape of the Great Land way up north and prevented the Good News from being known way down deep in the tree-less soil of the human soul.

And for nearly fifty years that life-giving power has been both the means and the message resounding in the village and in the wild.

It is a power that has refused to be tamed.

It is a power that reaches the villages of Norton Sound.

It is a power that reaches the rocky beaches of Eastern Siberia and beyond.

It is a power that has proven capable of penetrating into cold hearts that have begun to thaw from their permafrost hardness.

Praise God for a broadcast ministry that makes known the narrow way in a myriad of ways in such a way that long days and even longer nights are warmed by the everlasting arms of One bearing the weight of a world that He imagined, created, sustains, visited and for which He died.

A world less cold and dark because of the voice of the arctic and four letters that call its God-given ministry to mind.

Chickaloon Retreat Center Phase One Begins Some years ago, Don and Effie Graham graciously donated 80 acres of pristine land to ECCAK to be used for the Glory of God. A few years ago, there was a significant setback when their beautiful cabin developed a chimney fire and burned to the ground.

There is still a lot of volunteer work needed.

Ted Pullen, from Eagle River Community Covenant Church [see picture lower right] has been spending some of his time at Chickaloon along with others.

More recently, the ECCAK General Council, in seeing the need for a place of respite for the weary sojourner seeking a place of refuge, decided to construct two cabins on the property in 2009. It is hoped, that those who often develop compassion fatigue from giving their lives to serve people, will now have a place to go at little expense.

“There’s Gold in Them Thar Pages…”

Psalm 119:72 The law from Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

God’s Word, better than Gold. Jesus said it is even better than bread. How often do we feed our physical body? Most people on planet earth do not hesitate to intake food to keep the body strong. Yet so many neglect reading and studying the Bible for themselves to keep their spiritual strength up to par.

Neglecting to eat from the Word of God is like passing up nuggets of gold while walking the beach.

When you develop a regular pattern of searching through the pages of the Bible, you can be sure that you will make discoveries that is not a lot different than finding gold “in them thar hills.”

Below is a copy of the old discovery claim of the “Three Lucky Swedes.” You do not have to worry about “luck” when searching the Scriptures. You have the promised Holy Spirit that will come along your side. And the gold in “them thar pages” will never run out as long as you live.

By Eleanor Claus In a few weeks (Oct 18th) I will run the Humboldt Redwoods Marathon to celebrate God's gift of 75 years of physical life and 70 years of spiritual life! I was born in Eureka, CA (40 miles north of the race site). My father (Paul T. Nelson) was pastor of the Mission Covenant Church at that time.

God has blessed me in so many ways and given me physical strength to run races for nearly 30 years. This one will be my 28th Marathon.

I liken the marathon race to our spiritual race, ..."let us run with endurance the race set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith." (Heb. 12:1,2a) All who know Jesus as Savior and Lord are in this spiritual race! God has shown me over the years to use my running time to pray, interceding for those He brings to mind. As I run marathons (26 miles), I go through the alphabet (26 letters) praying for those whose last names begin with A at mile 1, Allison, Anderson, Anagick, etc. until I reach mile 26 "Z" and give thanks to God that I have Finished!

Ever since the beginnings of Anchorage First Covenant (soon 50 years), it has been my privilege and blessing for me to get to know some of the women from the villages of Northwest Alaska. Those who have moved to Anchorage, I have gotten to know as special friends and "sisters in Christ", many who are now in heaven! I'm now getting to know the

younger women and want to encourage them in their "spiritual race"!

I would like to celebrate this coming event by raising funds for a cause I believe God has shown me and others of its importance. Last year my daughter-in-law and I invited the ECCAK village Pastor’s wives to come to our Lodge for a physical and spiritual renewal time. Funds were raised for travel to Anchorage (air travel is the only way for these women to get to the city and it is very expensive). My dream for the coming year 2010 would be to continue raising funds so village pastor’s wives [and family members] would have a greater opportunity for physical and spiritual renewal. These trips could encourage and challenge all who participate to return to their home villages and share with others what God has done in their lives. I can envision the women [and men/youth/children] of the city churches benefiting even more by the interaction they would be able to have with these "sisters [or brothers] in Christ" and know better about their strong faith in a unique cultural setting. We would all be strengthened as together we seek to serve the Lord and give Him glory!

ECCAK office will accept contributions to their special fund called the “ECCAK Pastoral Care Fund”, so your gift would be tax deductible.

The Scammon Bay Covenant Church was blessed with a check for $5000 dollars. Pastor John Uttereyuk was quick to visit the Kaganak family with the good news. It could not have been better timing. Namman and Mary had just spoken of their need for a washing machine, but there was no money. Child Abuse: By the Numbers

By Gary Carlson on Monday July 20 luck with the church that included many Native foods. In the afternoon, we hiked around the village and it is quite a beautiful area. Our work on Monday included getting the 15 pads leveled and then putting beams on the pads.

The weather has been in the 50's and yes it is light most of the time. It does get almost dark from about 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Bugs have not been a problem.

Scammon Bay Family Lose Everything The fire broke out on June 3 in the home of Namman and Mary Kaganak’s home. It was the same day that a group from the North Pacific Conference had arrived. A bucket brigade was formed, but it was not enough. The Kaganak family lost everything to the fire [see picture next page].

ECCAK has set up a special fund called “The Scammon Bay Fire Fund.” If you would like to contribute to the helping the Kaganak Family, please mark the enclosed yellow card and put it in the envelope. Thank you.

The Kaganaks are making due by living in a very small temporary house.

In the midst of all the good news, we cannot forget about the injustices all around. Child abuse is a huge one. Today it is not as secret as it has been in the past, however. statistics still show: Annually, there are some 3 million reports of child abuse or neglect in America.

Children age five and under account for 43% of all child abuse reported.

75-90% of reported physical abuse and neglect cases involve the caretakers of the abused.

The correlation between abuse as a child and the potential for juvenile/adult criminal behavior is also appalling: Two of every three prisoners convicted of first-degree murder report childhood abuse.

97% of hard-core juvenile delinquents report a history of severe physical punishment and even assault in the home.

80% of all prostitutes report sexual abuse as children. (Ibid.)

The extreme effects of child abuse are seen in these statistics, and child sexual abuse has its own insidious results.
