NPC Partnership with Scammon Bay Gets Legs Pictures are worth a 1000 words, so this issue of the Chilling News will provide only the “show” part of “show-and-tell” with the next issue describing in words, as much as humanly possible, the marvelous work of God at the embryo stage of the Scammon Bay and North Pacific Conference partnership! The NPC team headed to Bush Alaska in August to help work alongside Arctic Barnabas Ministries and Scammon Bayers in the much needed parsonage repairs. Superintendent Mark Novak said, “This is just the start of a relationship that will last for years!”

Pray: Our bi-monthly newsletter, “Chilling News”, is full of stories about the people and ministry of ECCAK throughout the state. It also has a daily prayer calendar. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please let us know.

Encouragement; Writing and/or calling those who serve in the bush is a great ministry! Want to partner with a church or a pastor?

Ask for a prayer card of a pastor from our office.

Mission Teams: There are often times when we have need for teams of people to come and join with a local church, camp, college, youth group, etc. for a specific construction project or outreach event.

Volunteers: The ECCAK office needs volunteers to assist in administration, grant writing, special projects, etc.

Financial: God often calls people to give to ECCAK beyond the normal local church tithe or churches to place ECCAK in their mission budget. Some are led to leave a gift through estate planning to carry on the work in Alaska into the future.

Credit Card Donations: ECCAK can receive donations via credit cards. The perforated tab on the envelop allows for this giving option. Also, you can contact Sara Scoles at the ECCAK office (907) 694-6348 and she will be happy to assist you.

Teachers or Nurses: Christian teachers or nurses often come to Bush Alaska as “missionaries” and serve in the local Covenant church during off hours.

Pastors/Youth Workers: Often we have empty pulpits and are in need of pastors, short and long-term. Many villages have no one reaching out to the youth.

Donate Air Miles: Many people accumulate free air miles. Please consider donating some to ECCAK to help a bush pastor and family get away for some R & R.

It was a a. her t ime hunters would travel out on the tundra to seek the in caribou. While in Mountain Village, as the team waited for someone to pick them up, Velda took a little stroll on the tundra. He imagined what it must have been like to be a Tundra Woman back in the old days. Suddenly, a small herd of caribou came by. She was drawn to the herd as the largest bull laid down and looked at her. Velda just knew it was inviting her to “get on.” As she sat on the caribou, it slowly got up, took her back to the airport runway where one of the team captured her ride.

ECCAK Names New Alaska AVA Coordinator

By Bianca Tinker of Hooper Bay I can remember holding him in my arms. This cute little child, he was just so happy and I was happy with him.

What joy God brings to life through a 5 month year old cute and cuddly baby. Yes all babies have feelings but I did not realize or even think about this child’s feelings.

He can feel physical and emotional pain like you and I, but he’s just a baby, aren’t all babies supposed to be happy all the time? I guess not. No, this baby isn’t feeling emotional pain, at least he can’t tell me or his parents can’t tell if he’s really hurting, on the inside. I was holding this happy child and playing with him. My heart was happy because he was smiling and I was talking to him just like a baby would talk to you. It’s like all of a sudden I could not make this baby happy again. “Good grief, is it his diaper?” Nope it wasn’t. “Is he sleepy?” He was actually wide awake. Hmm, maybe I’ll just sing to him, because I know all babies love the sound of singing. He reacted to it for a while but he got so quiet again. I did not like this feeling. “Jesus I will do anything to go away. It makes me feel uncomfortable”. There I was standing in complete silence, feeling a strong connection with God. God wants me to do something and he wants me to do it quick. But I can’t do nothing. I’m babysitting! Then I realized this totally quiet baby. What’s he feeling? This baby has emotional pain and he does not know how to react to it. He’s still a baby. Who can tell if he’s hurting? He wants someone to comfort him just like we want someone to comfort us when we’re hurt, in the inside.

Yes, he can smile but what is behind that beautiful smile? Sure we hid pain but this child was holding pain because he’s still learning. I did not know how to comfort him so I started to think with God’s help.

In fact God did help me and he put a new song into my heart. It took awhile for me to get the tune, but I got it in like 10 minutes. I started to sing the song and he started to cry. Not for milk, not because he was sleepy or because I needed to change his diaper, but he cried like you and I with hurting pain, on the inside. I heard the pain in the cry and I saw the pain in his eyes. I started to cry and I sang the song over and over again.

Melanie Kakiaculi Smith accepted the call to be the Regional Conference Coordinator AVA (Advocates for Victims of Abuse) for ECCAK. Melanie has been married to “Smitty” for four years and serves as Mentor and Administrative Assistant at the New Hope Counseling Center in Soldotna, the right arm of Alaska Christian College.

AVA Regional Conference Coordinators make up the AV National Leadership Team. The team helps to provide direction, set goals and assist in implementing the strategic plan. These coordinators have been equipped to educate clergy and lay leaders at the local level as well as assist churches in the development of their own AVA ministry. Regional Conference Coordinators violence, and adult survivors of sexual abuse for local churches, Women Ministries groups, and clergy. They will also conduct AVA training for local church advocates.

Join us in celebrating God’s call on Melanie’s life in this area! She has a servant’s heart for all Alaskans and will need our prayers as she wears so many hats.

Meet Mary Putera Alaska is blessed to have a new team member, Mary Putera, now living in Wasilla, Alaska with her husband Joseph and son Joe Jr. Doesn’t that sound good, “Joseph and Mary?” She joins both CYAK and the Mat-Su Covenant Church in key roles. For the Mat-Su Covenant Church, her role is evolving as far as how it will play out, but she comes to serve as their Missional Pastor. With CYAK, her duties will revolve around her title, CYAK Co-Director, with emphasis in Team Pastoral Care and Coach. Alaskans will not have to wait long to meet Mary for she hit the tundra with her feet on the move!

Mary recently graduated from North Park Seminary with her MDiv. She received her BA from Connecticut College with her major in Psych/Soc/Intercultural and then went on to Lesley University to receive her MA/CMH in Psych/Intercultural. Mary and Joseph also have another son and daughter, Jesse and Chelsey, respectively.

[Information taken from “The Alaska Almanac” the 28th Edition] Southeast Alaska contains about 1,000 of the state’s 1,800 named islands, rocks and reefs; several thousand remain unnamed. The Aleutian Island chain, stretching southwest from the mainland, contains more than 200 islands.

Of the state’s 10 largest islands, six are in southeastern Alaska. Of the remainder, Unimak is in the Aleutians, Nunivak and St. Lawrence are in the Bering Sea off the western coast of Alaska, and Kodiak is in the Gulf of Alaska. The state’s 10 largest islands, according to the U. S. Geological Survey, are: Because facilities were being renovated in Unalakleet, the Christian Youth in Action [CYIA] camp that normally is held there took place in Hooper Bay this summer. Meetings were held in the new teen center which was built by Samaritan’s Purse. There were thirty!!! teens from four different villages. Several rededicated their lives to Jesus at a special service on Sunday morning with Pastor Grant Funk.

Everyone worked well together.

The marvelous thing about this camp is that it saw thirty Western Alaskans working together to teach 130 younger Western Alaskans at a VBS in Hooper Bay. The week after CYIA camp was over, seven teens from Unalakleet held a VBS just like had been done in Hooper Bay. They did the opening, closing and all the teaching and crafts with about ten adult helpers from Unalakleet. It was well attended with approximately 60 children at that VBS.

Please remember to pray for these teens...that they would be bold as they have opportunity to be involved in ministry during the next year.

We believe that there is a real movement of God among the young people of Alaska!

Amundsen Education Center [AEC], a non-Covenant organization run by an Alaskan Covenant Pastor, Mark Hill, is a ministry in Alaska that provides vocational skills to Western Alaskans, including carpentry.

Students of the 2009 Alaska Christian College: We celebrate always the stories of how students ended up at ACC and the paths that brought them here. For the first time, we sent a plane out to get students from four different villages to actually get to ACC as they did not have the finances to get here. We trust God will provide for the $1000+ cost they incurred to get here- well worth it! They are a great class so far with possibly our highest full time student equivalency record in our history! Since we began our second year program for accreditation requirements, we have seen more returning students than ever back on our campus. Pray for homesickness among many of our students and for their upbeat spirits to continue as they begin the process of whole-life discipleship.

MINNESOTA QUARTERS ALERT (IMPORTANT) Hang on to any of the new Minnesota Quarters you may have or acquire. They may be worth MUCH MORE than 25 cents! With the economy being shaky, every way to make a buck is important.

The US Mint announced today that it is recalling all of the Minnesota quarters that are part of its program featuring quarters from each state. This action is being taken after numerous reports that the new quarters will not work in parking meters, toll booths, vending machines, pay phones or any other coin operated devices. The problem lies in the unique design of the Minnesota quarter, which was designed by a couple of Norwegian specialists, Sven and Ole. Apparently the duct tape holding the two dimes and the nickel together keeps jamming up the machines.
