INTRODUCTION Founded in 1917 on a rich tradition of business success and leadership, the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah offers an experiential learning environment for students. We’re home to 12 institutes, centers and initiatives that deliver academic research and support an ecosystem of entrepreneurship, technology and innovation. The University of Utah is nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, just 30 minutes from seven ski resorts and less than five hours from five national parks. Salt Lake City is an urban hub of diverse nightlife, dining, art and music and boasts a top-ranked business environment for U.S. job growth and economic prowess.
DAVID ECCLES?
WHO IS
LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE LEGACY PERSEVERANCE David Eccles was born into an impoverished Scottish family and rose to become one of America’s leading industrialists. In his 63 years, he founded 54 businesses throughout Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Oregon, traveling more than an estimated 44,000 miles to do so. At the time of his death, he was president of 17 corporations and seven banks and served as acting director of 24 businesses in various industries. On Dec. 5, 1912, the day David Eccles passed away, flags across five Western states flew at half-staff. On the day of his funeral, factories, railroads and coal mines halted operations to pay respect to the man who had created thousands of jobs in virtually every sector of the economy. On April 8, 1991, the last surviving child of David Eccles, Emma Eccles Jones, made a spectacular gift to the University of Utah’s School of Business in her father’s memory. In recognition of her father’s monumental achievements in pioneering the economic development of the Intermountain West, the school was proudly renamed the David Eccles School of Business. Today, his entrepreneurial spirit, ambition, business acumen and incredible work ethic are embodied in the school’s mission and values.

DIVERSITY
& INCLUSION
The David Eccles School of Business is committed to fostering an inclusive culture by embracing diversity and equity in all its forms. It’s important that our students, staff, faculty and guests feel included and represented at the Eccles School. We insist on a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion, not just because it creates a safe place for everyone, but because we’re all better and more empathetic people when we learn what it’s like to live in someone else’s shoes. Because of this, the David Eccles School of Business and the University of Utah offer clubs, events, initiatives and many other resources to foster an inclusive environment.
LEARN MORE AT ECCLES.LINK/DIVERSITY DEAN’S LETTER of the largest problems facing our world today. And now, with programs such as Eccles Global, students and professors are reaching across international boundaries to impact business communities around the world. It’s a word that gets tossed around a lot in the business world, and in academia, too. But it’s the one I keep returning to as I contemplate more than a century of the David Eccles School of Business. Since the first class of students entered what was then the School of Commerce and Finance in 1917, students who study business at the University of Utah have had an impact — on the community, on the economy and on the world. Some of the brightest minds in business have passed through these halls. Names that have shaped the economy of what is consistently rated as one of the best states to do business. Professors who have made startling thought breakthroughs that have changed the foundations of how business is conducted. Institutes and centers that focus on solving some
But I think the reason “impact” seems so apt to describe our continuing growth is because I’ve experienced it myself. My professors had a profound impact on me as a student here at the Eccles School. They expanded the way I thought and truly helped me become a better person. I see the same thing happening now as our faculty challenge and support our current students, shaping entrepreneurs, doers and brilliant business minds who graduate ready to make a lasting impact on the world. To all of our alumni, faculty, staff, students, donors and families, a sincere thank you for more than a century of impact. And here’s to the next 100 years.

Although I did not have tons of experience in business, I had a lot of experience in leadership, and I worked hard academically. I prepared myself by excelling in what I was passionate about, and that translated into skills that could be applied to this experience. I never knew how much the Business Scholars program
would change my life, but I am so grateful I applied.
Jeffrey Wang, Business Scholar
