MAKE AN IMPACT Students in the Business Scholars Transfer Program work in teams to develop a new product or service that will have a real impact on students, faculty, or the broader community at University of Utah. This project, known as Build a Better U, allows students to design and present their business model in a class competition. Winners then present to university leadership. Read about a recent project below that is now being implemented university-wide. "Transfer Scholars is the most rewarding experience I've had so far in my educational experience. I got to work with a lot of different people from different backgrounds. [As part of the Build a Better U project], my group decided we wanted to tackle the issue of sustainability. We really pushed to get waterless fixtures installed into some of the men's restrooms on campus and got our project funded! ~ John Haraden, Mathematics and Finance major

SPOTLIGHT: THE WATER CONSERVATION PROJECT CHALLENGE: Build a Better U: Develop a solution that addresses issues of safety, affordability, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, or academics & accessibility on campus. “Water conservation is a major environmental issue that we face here in Utah. Our group wanted to find a way to address that in a meaningful way,” states John Haraden. The desert state of Utah is No. 1 in the country for population growth and per capita water usage. This, combined with decreasing snowpack and precipitation rates, means Utah could very well run out of water in the next few generations. This team decided to take an unusual route to address the issue. “Nobody wants to talk about urinals, it’s just not sexy,” says Ethan Black. But the fact of

the matter is, a single urinal, on average, uses more than 40,000 gallons of water each year. In order to address this issue, the team chose to investigate converting current flush urinals on campus to Waterless urinals to save water. They discovered the campus could save more than 1 billion gallons of water by making the switch. This team worked with the University Buildings and Maintenance team, the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund, and the Creator and CEO of Waterless Co. to secure funding and a restroom in the

Marriott Library to execute a proof of concept experiment. This retrofit will hopefully be completed by Fall 2021. In addition to securing space to test the idea, this group was selected to present their concept for Cathy Anderson, CFO of the University of Utah. “Knowing that our project is on the University’s radar and that there is a real possibility for us making a campus-wide impact is the best payoff for our group’s hard work and dedication.”

TRAVEL , NETWORK, AND MAKE LIFE-LONG FRIENDSHIPS. COMPANY VISITS An important aspect of business is gaining networking experience and connections that you can carry with you throughout your career. The Business Scholars Transfer Program provides these opportunities through visits to local, nationwide, and even global businesses. During these visits, we hear from key executives within the company, get exclusive tours and inside knowledge of innovative steps these businesses are taking, and have opportunities to network with recruiters regarding further insight for job placements and internship opportunities.

NATIONAL TRAVEL

While on these trips, you will get exclusive tours of these companies, amazing experiences unique to the local culture, opportunities to develop life-long memories and friendships with other transfer students in the program.
