Matilda Linde Dellrud ECCO Ladies’ Design Assistant Talk to us about your inspirations for this collection’s use of bold, bright colors. This collection was inspired by the 1960s’ love for contrasting color scales and high intensity contrasts. We were also inspired by softer summer tones with chalked and sunbleached hues. Tell us how this fits in with Scandinavian design. In modern architecture, color is used in experimental, bold and contrasted ways. For us, the interaction of colors has been the most important in this years color story. Aside from color, how would you describe the overall style of this collection? The look is modern and casual with sporty details and insole prints. We’ve also experimented
14
with contemporary details such as irregular geometry. The whole collection represents an intersection of technology, science, art and craft. Can you talk about how you envision people wearing the shoes? The idea of “pop color”? Summer in Scandinavia is a wonderful and exuberant time. We want this collection to be a playful reminder of summer fun and an inspiration to enjoy the season fully.

“With shoes this versatile, the only limit is your imagination.” Talk to us about your impressions of the collection’s use of color. The way ECCO is using two bright colors in the same shoe feels new and fresh. The second complementary color creates a subtle yet beautiful contrast. I actually love all the colors. The orange and blue is definitely my favorite. Tell us how you see women wearing these shoes. With shoes this versatile, the only limit is your imagination. I can see women taking advantage of the wonderful colors to “style up” their wardrobe. I can picture the shoes adding the perfect finishing touch to a summer dress or bringing a pop of color to an outfit of blue jeans and a simple white shirt.
How does the collection fit in with current fashion trends? A trend never starts by itself, so this spring and summer you can expect to see a lot of interesting spins on color. I think ECCO’s bright, minimalist Scandinavian approach fits right in. How does the collection express Scandinavian style? There is a sense of simplicity and ease. These designs show how a minimalist approach allows styles to be quite modern yet still feel ageless. For many years, ECCO has represented Scandinavian style as both good quality and as classic Danish design. This is something I am proud of as a Danish stylist.

BJARNE ZAEDOW ECCO Men’s Designer
Can you tell us the story of this collection? How the ideas first came about? We were inspired by our favorite films from the 1930’s to the 50’s, when men were very dashing in how they dressed and wore leather that was handcrafted. These shoes mix classic styles with fresh, modern colors. We also experimented with putting classic uppers on sneaker outsoles. Can you describe the collection for us? It’s both old school and classic. Fresh and modern. All at the same time. Talk to us about how you envision people wearing the shoes. There are no rules today. We encourage men to mix and match, as they like. Everything is possible. What about these shoes is rooted in or associated with Scandinavian design? Scandinavian design became famous for furniture that was classic, modern and simple without extraneous decoration. These shoes are minimalist in terms of details, yet generous with texture and capabilities. They combine modernity, functionality and timelessness.

“Scandinavian design stands for simple, everyday objects created with the idea that ‘form follows function’, which is also something we see expressed in nature.”
How would you describe Scandinavian design? ECCO is based in rural Denmark. Part of our Scandinavian heritage is about being close to nature. Understanding seasonal changes. Appreciating the beauty of our landscape. Scandinavian design stands for simple, everyday objects created with the idea that “form follows function,” which is also something we see expressed in nature. In what ways is this collection an example of Scandinavian design? It embodies Scandinavian design in the way materials and colors interact. When I look out my window or when I am walking in the forest or by the sea, my eyes find connections in everything. This kind of unity is expressed in all these collections, which feature smooth, soft leathers and many hues of colors.
42
What is the relationship between “form follows function” and ECCO’s approach to fit? We adhere as closely to the “form follows function” principle as anyone out there, because we never compromise fit. Different shoes have different shapes, but the fit will always be there. Whether the ECCO product you’re putting on is modern, formal, casual or classic, the feeling will be virtually the same. We build around the foot, which we see as a major factor in people’s well being. What inspires you and your design team? Because Scandinavian design history is based on democratic design ideals, inspiration tends to come in a very natural way: by following the seasonal changes of nature. But we are also influenced by music, film, art, architecture and even the ways we see people expressing themselves on the street. Part of Scandinavian design is being open to the world around you.

ECCO SCULPTURED 65 Simple and elegant, featuring rich full-grain leathers, minimalist Scandinavian style and more comfort than you can imagine.
“Traditionally, the first thing a woman does when she gets home is to throw her heels in the corner and put on something flat. With Sculptured, you can put them on in the morning and walk all the way to the office. You can be at the office all day and you can go clubbing afterward. They are genuinely comfortable. You can wear them with jeans, walking to the city or with a dress at the office.” – Niki Tæstensen, ECCO Ladies’ Lead Designer 53
SCANDINAVIAN STYLE AND COMFORT

The ECCO Clayton collection combines S candinavian simplicity and classic themes with new twists and interpretations. They feature modern shoes that embrace imagination. Most of all, they are designed to express the intention and the style of the men who wear them.

“By matching classic styles with new, contemporary shapes, I think we created something quite fresh.” – Kano Afify (ECCO Men’s Lead Designer)

ECCO CLAYTON Bridging the gap between professional and casual, this hybrid shoe is light, sporty and business-like.
57
Kano Afify ECCO Men’s Lead Designer Tell us about your goal for this collection. Our goal was to create a high-quality collection using classic themes in a modern way. We want these shoes to appeal to men who are more fashion forward, without excluding those accustomed to more traditional styles. Tell us some of your creative inspirations. Inspirations for the collection were Scandinavian and Italian tailoring, along with the idea of reinterpreting the classics. We were definitely influenced by the stylish men we see at Pitti Uomo in Florence.

leathers and vintage classics with beautiful patinas. By matching classic styles with new, contemporary shapes, I think we created something quite fresh. Can you talk to us about the ways Scandinavian design principles influenced this collection? The collection embodies the essence of Scandinavian design. Beauty and longevity are achieved through simplicity and the use of high-quality materials. What trends do you see in Scandinavian fashion today? Scandinavian fashion is going through what I’d call a “classic formal” moment. Younger men want to express an appreciation for the past by dressing like
their well-dressed grandfathers, but with more contemporary proportions. What works of Scandinavian design inspire you? As a young design student in North America, I learned about Scandinavian furniture from books and lectures, so it’s a real pleasure to now live in Denmark, surrounded by these beautiful objects on a daily basis. Some of my favorite examples include Scandinavian furniture design, which bring purified design to life with great confidence.

Maria Bruncke Petersen ECCO Leader, Brand and Campaign Development and Mother of two boys
What makes ECCO’s approach to shoemaking especially beneficial for kids? At ECCO, we believe that kids should be allowed to be kids. Meaning, they should feel free to be active and comfortable at all times, whether walking in the park or having a wild time on the playground. This is why our kids’ shoes are lightweight, flexible, durable, breathable, and not least, cool looking. As a parent, what do you look for in a kid’s shoe? The first and most important thing I look for in a shoe is the fit. I would never put my boys’ feet in shoes that don’t fit their feet properly. ECCO’s last shapes are made based on what we call “endless wear tests”. This creates a fit that is snug enough in the heel to keep the foot steady, while leaving room in the forefoot for kids’ toes to move freely. What are other key features in ECCO kids’ shoes? I have two very active boys, 2 and 5 years old. They’re always on the move, climbing trees, stepping in puddles or whatever the day might bring. They need shoes that are breathable enough to keep their feet cool and durable enough to keep up with them. 67
