Message The President’s Challenge ‘Start Small Dream Big’ initiative was started to encourage our young children to give back to society.

It has grown almost ten-fold in the past four years, from an initiative involving 5,000 children in 2015, to a community-led movement that involves 49,000 children today.

No one is too young to contribute to the community. When I visited a preschool earlier this year, I was impressed by our pre-schoolers’ creativity and resourcefulness. Through their collaboration with the elderly, the children made beautiful art pieces that were auctioned to raise funds for President’s Challenge. It is heartening to see our young initiating ideas on how to serve the community, and sharing that enthusiasm at home with their family members and friends.

I am happy that ‘Start Small Dream Big’ gives our young ones the opportunity to learn the importance of giving and caring for others around them, and instils in them good values such as respect, kindness and empathy. I thank all the teachers, parents and community partners for supporting this meaningful movement. Let’s continue to make Singapore a more caring and inclusive home for all.

Message

Our young will shape the Singapore of tomorrow. As a nation, we need to raise our children holistically and with a good set of values from young, so that they learn to become responsible individuals who care about their family, the community and those around them. The President’s Challenge ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement provides our children with the opportunity to make volunteerism and giving back a way of life from a young age.

This year, ‘Start Small Dream Big’ commemorates our Singapore Bicentennial. Themed “Learn from Our Past, Dream of Our Future”, our pre-schoolers are encouraged to learn about our nation’s diverse heritage through community projects, and to dream and aspire towards the Singapore they want to contribute to.

Celebrating its 5th year, ‘Start Small Dream Big’ has grown from strength to strength. This year, children from over 820 preschools have collectively contributed more than 1.4 million hours of community services. They have also raised $300,000 for charity.

I encourage preschools to continue working with parents and the community to make community service a part of our children’s holistic education.

Together, we can make a difference to the lives of those around us. Let us take inspiration from our forefathers, as Singapore marks our bicentennial this year.

Foreword

When we talk about early childhood education, it is not just about preparing our children for primary school. It is about setting the foundations for raising well-rounded individuals and preparing them for life so that they become valuable contributors to society.

It is with this vision that the Early Childhood Development Agency launched the President’s Challenge ‘Start Small Dream Big’ project in 2015. Now in its fifth year, the project has grown significantly into a movement. This year, we have over 820 preschools and 49,000 children supporting this meaningful cause through community service projects, a 6-fold increase since its inception.

We are glad that more and more preschools are joining the movement to provide our children with the opportunity to participate in service learning activities, such as raising funds for charity, befriending the elderly and the disabled, caring for the environment, and showing appreciation to others. These will inspire our children to make our home a little kinder and better.

A big thank you to the early childhood educators, parents and community partners for supporting our children to “Start Small Dream Big”. We look forward to many more opportunities to work together and give our children a good start in life!

Learn from Our Past, Dream of Our Future

In support of the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration, this year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ theme was “Learn from Our Past, Dream of Our Future”. We encouraged children to learn about Singapore’s heritage, and to dream and aspire towards the Singapore they want to contribute to!

Start Small Dream Big’ turns 5!

Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development, launched the fifth edition of ‘Start Small Dream Big’ on Friday, 26 April 2019, at the Bayfront Pavilion during the Eco Kampung Carnival, organised by Preschool Market, in collaboration with Gardens by the Bay. The launch gathered 1,000 preschoolers as they embarked on their SSDB project, “Appreciating Our Heritage in Nature”. The children went on a journey to discover the diverse heritage and cultures of Singapore through nature. They also showed appreciation to their family, friends and the community by gifting crafts using materials from nature and recyclables.

ECDA hosted a Virtual Launch via a Facebook Event Page at http://bit.ly/SSDB2019Launch throughout the month of April. Centres carried out their own SSDB project launches with children and their parents, and shared photos and videos on Facebook with the hashtag

#SSDB2019!

Caring for the Community

Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Social and Family Development, joined the children of My First Skool @ Blk 208B Punggol Place on Friday, 28 June 2019 for their SSDB event, “#JomFUNraisingRaya@MFSPC4!”. Their project aimed to build strong partnerships with the community through acts of charity.

The centre partnered with Al-Islah Mosque for a day of fund-raising activities in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Funds raised were donated to needy families in Punggol as part of the Mosque’s “Blessings in Harmony” donation drive.

President Supports SSDB

President Halimah Yacob visited MY World Preschool @ Hougang Dewcourt on Saturday, 24 August 2019, to view the children’s SSDB project, “Art & the Merdeka Generation”. The centre collaborated with Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre to give the children opportunities to interact with the Merdeka Generation. They also collaborated with ArtScience Museum, who trained the teachers on art & science activities for pre-schoolers. Funds raised from the art exhibition and auction event went to the President’s Challenge.

Save the Ocean!

Averbel Child Development Centre The children went on a mission to keep Singapore clean by raising awareness on the importance of protecting and conserving our oceans through reducing plastic usage.

Through a visit to Resorts World Sentosa S.E.A. Aquarium, they learned how plastic pollution affects sea creatures in the ocean.

They then initiated activities to curb plastic usage, and held a charity sale of metal straws to get parents to say no to plastic straws.

Little Helping Angels

Ace @ Work Enrichment A visit to The Kindness Gallery at Kindsville taught the children how to show kindness and graciousness towards people around them. For example, to greet the bus captain when boarding a bus, not run around in the bus, and give up seats to those in need. Singapore Kindness Movement visited their school for a Kindness Puppet Show, which shared the message that all of us can make a difference by being kind.

Together, we can make a positive difference to our marine environment!

Caring Brings Happiness

Carpe Diem Mi Preschool

Parents generously donated food items for their children to pack and present to the elderly residents at Ling Kwang Home for Senior Citizens. They made crafts and had tea together during their visit. The centre then organised a charity drive, collecting a total of $600 for the Home.

Taking Care of the Elderly

Bright Juniors @ Bukit Purmei In conjunction with Singapore Kindness Day, the children had their little hands busy doing crafts as part of their contribution to the elderly in their neighbourhood. They decorated paper bags with their handprints, and placed an apple in each bag as a token of love for the elderly. They gifted every elderly person they met around Bukit Purmei with the kindness bags.

Recycle the Present; Save the Future

E-Bridge Pre-School (615 Edgefield Plains) The best way to declutter items while doing good is through donation drives! As part of the K1 and K2 classes’ initiative to encourage others to recycle, they planned a centre-wide donation drive, extending it to their surrounding estate.

They collaborated with The Salvation Army, who shared with the children on the importance of recycling and how their donations can benefit the underprivileged. They designed and distributed flyers to parents and residents, who brought clothes, newspapers and old magazines to support the children’s donation drive!

Our Pre-loved Books

Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home (Child Care) The K1 and K2 classes brainstormed and decided to raise funds for Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, through the sale of their pre-loved books. Parents donated the books while the children sorted out the books. The children learned that recycling pre-loved books is a way to a green environment!

Bless our Foreign Workers

Kampong Kapor Methodist Church Kindergarten As the school is situated in the heart of Little India, the children see many migrant workers in the vicinity. They decided to show appreciation to foreign workers by baking cookies with ingredients donated by parents. The children packed 300 bags of cookies and gifted them to foreign workers who pass by their school.

This Ability

Islander Preschool With their curiosity piqued over an International Symbol of Access outside a toilet, the children began an inquiry into how they can support the needs of people with diverse abilities. They learned how different kinds of assistive tools support the needs of the disabled and help them carry out their daily activities. A visit to Dialogue in the Dark showed them how their experiences and perspectives differ from those with visual impairments. To reinforce the idea that all children have the right to play, regardless of abilities, they visited an inclusive playground.

Inspired by this, they created a diorama of their ideal inclusive playground!

Have A Piece of CAKE

Kiddy Campus @ Eunos The centre’s project promotes the values of Care, Appreciation, Kindness and Empathy.

Children and their parents visited Pertapis Children’s Home, and had a meaningful time with the residents. To raise funds for the children of the Home, the K1 and K2 classes made honey cornflakes which they sold for Hari Raya, and created artworks which parents snapped up!

Everyday Heroes Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse @ Novena Pte Ltd The K1 and K2 children went to Velocity Shopping Mall to show their gratitude to the cleaning staff and security guards who worked there by presenting them with unique handmade cards and delicious rice krispies snack. They said ‘Thank you for your hard work’ and gave a big smile to each staff. They learned that everybody has a part to play in our community and no job is insignificant. Children shared that now when they cross paths with these Everyday Heroes, they would greet them with a smile!

Save the Harlequin Butterfly

Kidz Meadow Childcare @ Yishun The centre launched their SSDB project with the opening of their own Flower Garden in their effort to save the Harlequin Butterfly, which is on the list of endangered species. In their hope to bring these butterflies back to its natural habitat, they planted flowering plants and helped to look after the garden. Parents also played their part by donating pots and plants.

Through this project, the children and parents had a better understanding and appreciation towards our endangered wildlife.

Commemorating Ah Gongs & Ah Mahs, Contributing to the Future Kidz Kingdom Pte Ltd Through this community project, the centre hopes to spread love, compassion & appreciation of the elderly, so as to prepare our young preschoolers to be good citizens in future years. They visited Muhammadiyah Health and Day Care Centre, and served breakfast to the elderly. They also led them in a workout session, shared Hari Raya delicacies, and bonded over games.

Little Entrepreneur Project Kinderland Preschool @ Pandan Valley

The children’s project aims to nurture entrepreneurism, and instill perseverance and social competence through interactions with their peers and adults. The amount raised from their mini fun fair went towards enhancing programmes and services to enable seniors at Lions Befrienders, so that they can enjoy meaningful and enriching lives.

Keep Clean Singapore!

Kindercare Joo Seng Pte Ltd

Partnering with Public Hygiene Council, the centre organised litter-picking activities around their neighbourhood. The children were surprised to find lots of tissue papers, cigarette butts, food wrappers and bottles lying around on the floor, grass and tables! After helping to pick and throw the litter, they presented an art work and food basket to the cleaners as a token of appreciation for their hard work.

Together, we can keep our neighbourhood clean!

Stay Active - Let’s Move to the Beat!

LoveShine Childcare Pte Ltd

The children invited the elderly from All Saints Home, and engaged them with simple exercises and games to promote healthy living. The children also helped to prepare healthy food for the elderly, and served them drinks and snacks after performing for them. Together, the children brought cheer and smiles to the elderly!

Food For All: Food Fiesta Learning Vision @ Changi Business Park Through partnership with Food Bank, the children raised funds from their Food Fiesta event to buy and pack food items for the less fortunate families in the community. The Food Fiesta was part of the centre’s Term 2 theme on ‘Uniquely Singapore.” The children showcased delicious foods from the different ethnicities in Singapore, as well as healthy snacks for everyone to enjoy. The school hopes to develop a community spirit among their children so they can become responsible members of the community!

Loving Our Singapore

MOE Kindergarten @ Farrer Park In celebration of Singapore’s 54th National Day, the teachers hope to cultivate in their children a sense of responsibility to their country. Keeping Singapore clean is one of the many ways to love Singapore!

Little Hands, Big Hearts MapleBear Smart Learners Pte Ltd They may be small, but their little hands can make a difference! The children engaged residents of Thye Hua Kwan Nursing Home by making fruit kebabs and entertaining them with songs. Together with the residents, they designed and painted tote bags which the children sold at their funfair to raise funds for the Home.

Kindness in the Environment

Pariposa Preschool The centre’s mission was to show kindness in the environment, through community involvement programmes that promote acts of civicmindedness. Children and parents embarked on keeping public spaces clean and litter-free, with a beach clean-up and litter-picking activity. They also completed a ‘Kindness 10-days Challenge’ at home with the help of parents, and wrapped up their project with a fun-filled carnival.

Love Food Avoid Waste My First Skool @ Choa Chu Kang Crescent Blk 684A The children made a food pledge to remind themselves of how fortunate they are to have proper meals: “We, the children of MFS CCK04, pledge ourselves to reduce food waste. I will eat my leftovers of food, and eat smart by serving smaller portions of food because there are many people who do not have enough to eat while I waste food. I will encourage my family the same too! I am a FOOD WASTE WARRIOR!” They also spread their message with a Parents’ Day carnival, where they raised funds for the President’s Challenge.

Little Green Fingers

PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Changi-Simei Blk 233 (CC) To kick off their project, parents contributed soil and different types of seeds, such as spinach, choy sum and carrots, for the children to plant.

They planted these seeds in recycled materials such as plastic containers and egg cartons, and took turns caring for the plants by watering them daily and ensuring the plants have sufficient sunlight. To wrap up their project, cooked green vegetables were presented to the elderly at the nearby PCF Sparklecare!

Ugly Food is Beautiful Pat’s Schoolhouse @ Jubilee Park (JP) The centre collaborated with a social enterprise, Ugly Food, who came down to educate the children about food that get thrown away because of their appearance. Be it a bruised banana or a wonky carrot, they are actually still edible! They learned how to identify edible fruits from rotten ones, and how Ugly Food helps minimise food waste by rescuing these foods to resell them. To help spread awareness about food waste, the school held a bazaar to sell rescued fruits from Ugly Food. Profits from the sale went to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and President’s Challenge.

Helping Hearts

PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ TampinesChangkat Blk 318 (KN) This year, teachers and children from the centre continued their support to SPD (Serving People with Disabilities) with a charity sale to raise funds. They sold sandwiches, fruits, terrariums and jellies, and even fresh murukku made by the Parent Support Group. Together, they raised $600 for charity!

A Pet is for Life

PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Pioneer Blk 662B (KN) The aim of this project was to promote responsible and considerate pet ownership.

Parents donated long socks and tennis balls to make dog toys, and children worked with toilet rolls and cotton buds to make cat toys.

These toys were delivered to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for the abandoned pets at the shelter. Trainers from Save Our Shelter Dogs (SOSD) conducted a session on pet care, and the children learned not to abandon pets.

Tea with Atuk & Nenek PPIS Child Development Centre @ Bedok Reservoir

In the second year of their SSDB journey, the centre chose Jamiyah Home for the Aged (Darul Takrim) as their beneficiary. Their aim for this project was for the children to understand why caring for the elderly and their loved ones is important. They learned how to spend quality time with their grandparents, show love and empathy to others, and raise funds for a good cause.

Learn from Our Past, Dream of Our Future PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Toa Payoh West-Balestier Blk 45 (DS) The centre did a myriad of projects to appreciate the nation’s heritage, through nature, cultural diversity and marine life. The Toddler class went on a mission to keep the Toa Payoh neighbourhood clean, while the Pre-Nursery and Nursery classes made recycling a part of their mission for a sustainable future. The K1 class created a storybook on “20 Things I Can Do to Help My World”, while the K2 classes learned more about Singapore’s Bicentennial and what small acts they can do to build a future Singapore that is kind and inclusive.

Spirit of Giving

Presbyterian Community Services @ Ghim Moh The children learned to show kindness to the elderly through their interactions with them in their community. They celebrated National Day at SARAH Seniors Activity Centre where they gifted the elderly with packed goodies filled with food items donated by the children’s parents.

The centre also partnered with Dorcas Home Care to deliver meals to frail and homebound seniors.

Your Shoes! My Footprints!

Praiseland Child Care & Learning Centre

To raise awareness and compassion for children born with special needs, the children introduced parents to their SSDB project with an activity where everyone wore somebody else’s shoes and walked across a large canvass of paper, leaving behind painted shoe prints. Through this, they experienced the discomforting and challenging experience of walking in someone else’s shoes.

Learning the Kampong Ways: Our Small Steps to Protect the Earth from Climate Change Sunflower Kiddy Star Preschool Inspired to fight against climate change, the children went on a mission to discover and adopt some of our old kampong way of living to help make the Earth green again. As their first small step against climate change, they planted their own tree and worked with NParks to start their own garden through the ‘Community in Bloom’ initiative.

Fight the Bite

Spring Brainy Kidz @ Yishun The children formed a ‘SWAT Team’ against dengue by giving out flyers around their neighbourhood to spread the awareness of dengue and how to protect against mosquito bites. They also made posters to display around the school premises to inform the public of the dangers of dengue and its prevention.

Singapore, My Home, My Future TOUCH Child Care (Hougang & Clementi) The K2 children launched their project with an outing to Gardens by the Bay with 40 elderly people from TOUCH Senior Activity Centre. In July, the children helped to deliver meals to stay-home and needy elderly in Toa Payoh. The staff of TOUCH Home Care provided handson activities to the children so they could understand and empathise with the elderly who cannot see, hear and walk well. Other than the cooked meals, the children also gifted the elderly with additional biscuits and drinks.

Spread Awareness to Zero Food Waste Thinkerstar Preschool Pte Ltd In collaboration with NParks, the children planted a Gelam Tikus tree, which they named the “Thinkerstar Tree�, just outside their centre.

This was in support of their main SSDB project on doing their part to save the Earth, and caring for the environment in their own little ways.

Give A Little Love

Zion Kindergarten The Nursery children’s SSDB project was inspired by one of the students in the school who was diagnosed with cancer. They decided to raise awareness on childhood cancer, and show their love to friends at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital who were fighting the disease. They made ‘Get Well Soon’ cards and wrapped 30 water bottles to give the children with cancer, and together with parents, raised a donation of $500 for the children.

Make Every Drop Count Wesley Vineyard Childcare @ Serangoon North In their bid to spread the importance of saving water and the five water saving tips, the children made colourful bookmarks to give out to parents and the community. They visited the NEWater Visitor Centre to learn how our water is collected and treated, and penned their thoughts in their SSDB Reflection Journal.

SSDB 2019 Finale

This year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ Finale was held in conjunction with ECDA’s Early Childhood Conference on 13 – 14 September (Friday & Saturday) at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. The Finale exhibition featured collaborative projects between partners and participating centres through fun activity stations. Visitors to our SSDB Booth learned more about the movement from our SSDB Ambassadors from the National Institute of Early Childhood Development (ITE).

Families took part in t-shirt colouring and heritage games, and even enjoyed a storytelling session by celebrity artiste and author, Edmund Chen.

Appreciation Ceremony The ‘Start Small Dream Big’ community came together on 14 September 2019, Saturday, to celebrate the closing of this year’s project and show support to all our SSDB centres. President Halimah Yacob presented appreciation plaques to our SSDB partners for their contributions to our preschools.

SSDB in the Singapore Book of Records!

Over 1,300 children gathered at the SSDB 2019 Finale to set a record for the “Most Number of People Playing Cardboard Shakers”!

Children created musical instruments using cardboard items to raise awareness on caring for the environment. To commemorate this year’s Bicentennial, the children also added heritage-inspired designs on their handmade shakers to reflect Singapore’s history and diverse cultures. Preschool Market provided our SSDB centres with recycled materials through their SG Kindred Garden site, and instructions on various types of cardboard shakers. This is SSDB’s third time in the Singapore Book of Records!

The President’s Challenge is an annual community outreach and fund-raising campaign for beneficiaries selected yearly by the President’s Office. Started in 2000, the Challenge represents a coming together of people from all walks of life, under the President’s patronage, to help the less fortunate. It serves as a call to all Singaporeans to do their part to build a more caring and inclusive society by giving of their time, skills and enterprise.

In 2012, Dr Tony Tan expanded the areas of focus to include Volunteerism and Social Enterprise. In 2018, President Halimah Yacob refocuses the effort of President’s Challenge towards the empowerment of vulnerable groups with skills and employability. An Empowering for Life Fund was set up to support programmes in skills upgrading, capacity building and employment of vulnerable groups. President’s Challenge aims to raise $10 million for the Empowering for Life Fund over the next 5 years and the Government will provide dollar-for-dollar matching.
