Message

It is a pleasure to know that despite the challenging COVID-19 conditions, this year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement has seen the highest participation rate to-date. This year’s theme, “Stay Connected, Make a Difference”, is especially important and timely. COVID-19 has affected everyone and kept people, including families, physically apart. By connecting virtually with our loved ones and others in our community, we can help to ensure that no one is left behind. Thank you, teachers and children, for remaining steadfast to the cause of ‘Start Small Dream Big’ during this challenging period. I would also like to thank parents for their unwavering support for the children and the teachers in the community projects. Our appreciation too, to all community partners for supporting our children through meaningful engagements and activities, such as virtual visits and learning journeys. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. I hope that even more preschools and children will join this meaningful ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement, and start playing a part in making Singapore a caring and inclusive society.

Mdm Halimah Yacob President of the Republic of Singapore

Message

COVID-19 has changed the way we champion causes that we care about. Many traditional in-person activities, such as volunteer activities and fund-raising events, have decreased significantly during these times. However, the need to help those who are vulnerable in our society is more critical than ever. This year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ theme, “Stay Connected, Make A Difference”, has inspired many of our preschools to get creative and reinvent what volunteering looks like. They have embraced change, creating activities that ensure safe-distancing, yet are just as engaging and meaningful. I had a wonderful time connecting with the children during the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ launch in April this year. I have seen how our young ones are capable of showing care and compassion to those around them. I would like to thank our preschool teachers and parents for inculcating the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ values in our children. Let us continue to stay meaningfully connected with all segments of our society, and build a strong and caring Singapore together.

Mr Masagos Zulkifli Minister for Social And Family Development (MSF) Second Minister For Health (MOH)

Foreword

Research has shown that teaching children to give back to the community has positive benefits for their mental and emotional development. It lays the foundation for empathy, compassion and engagement. It encourages cooperation, builds selfesteem, and sparks interest and passion in our young ones. It can also strengthen family bonding when parents get involved in community projects with their children. This year, a record of over 71,000 children from 1,050 preschools participated in the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement, despite the disruptions of COVID-19. It would not have been possible without the strong support from our preschool teachers, parents and our community partners. Let us continue to inspire even more preschools to join the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement, as we work together to shape our tomorrow by providing opportunities for our children to become active and caring citizens!

Ms Jamie Ang Chief Executive Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA)

Stay Connected, Make A Difference This year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ theme, “Stay Connected, Make a Difference”, encouraged children to continue to maintain social connections with the community despite the current COVID-19 situation, and find meaningful ways to reach out and do good. This year’s theme also aligned with the President’s Challenge’s focus on supporting the digital inclusion of vulnerable groups. To stay connected in a time of social distancing, preschools increasingly used technology to engage the community.

SSDB 2021 Launch

Watch the SSDB 2021 Launch Video!

More than 71,000 children from 1,050 preschools participated in the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ movement this year. This is the highest record to date, with more than half of all pre-schools in Singapore on board. This signals the early childhood sector’s continued and rising recognition of the importance of inculcating important values such as kindness, compassion and sharing in our young children.

Minister for Family and Social Development, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, launched this year’s ‘Start Small Dream Big’ on 22 April, Thursday, at Presbyterian Community Services (PCS) Childcare Centre @ Yishun. Participating preschools carried out their project launches with children at their own premises.

6

Preschools each received a ‘Start Small Dream Big’ Resource Package, filled with many resources from ECDA and our partners, for teachers and children to use throughout their projects. As part of efforts to better support preschools in engaging seniors in community care organisations (e.g. nursing homes), the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) and Community Chest even co-developed a new resource, “Befriending Seniors: An Educator’s Guide to Promoting Intergenerational Ties”.

Featured SSDB Projects Making a Difference by Sending Love Ace @ Work Childcare Pte Ltd (Cashew Heights)

Motivated to make others happy, the children worked with their teachers and parents to create a puzzle out of recycled cereal boxes for the elderly at St. Luke’s Eldercare @ Keat Hong Centre. The children also prepared dance routines for the elderly, with steps suggested by a personal trainer at Genesis Gym and a Therapist Assistant from SGH, to help the elderly with their mobility. The children interacted with the elderly via Zoom. This project made them appreciate their loved ones and taught them that communication is key to forming bonds.

Upcyling and Giving

Agape Little Uni @ Sengkang Eastway With the depletion of natural resources being a concern in the 21st century, the children went on a journey to explore the world of natural resources. They learned about upcyling and decided to upcycle their milk powder cans, giving a new life to these items by transforming them into beautiful night lights and flowerpots. Pairing with homemade air freshener, the night lamps and potted plants were packaged into Mindfulness packs to raise funds for President’s Challenge.

8

Caring for Everyone An-Nur Mosque Kindergarten

The children were first introduced to Mr Bumble Bee, a mascot who is disabled. Despite having only one leg, he is still able to fly. To encourage children to focus more on one’s abilities rather than disabilities, the centre collaborated with My Inspiring Journey (MIJ), a school for children with special needs, for their project. The children were excited to make new friends! They brought their favourite toys and books to show each other over a Zoom session, and learned to make Honey Cornflakes together through a video demonstration. The centre then organised a bake sale for children to raise funds for MIJ by selling the Honey Cornflakes that they’ve made!

Caring for Singapore Wildlife and Nature Artemis PreSkool @ Woodleigh

The school partnered with Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) to discover our wildlife and how to protect it. The children decided to adopt an animal, and majority voted for Ah Meng the Orang Utan! In the process of adopting Ah Meng, the Singapore Zoo sent them a postcard inviting them to ask questions about Ah Meng. The children then created artworks to raise funds for the animals at the zoo, in light of the reduced number of visitors during COVID-19. The school raised a total of $950, and after presenting the cheque to the zoo, they received the official adoption certificate for Ah Meng!

9

Bethel Connects, Better Together Bethel Day Care Centre

The school wanted to focus on making connections amidst all the social distancing in the past year. They collaborated with the Singapore Arts Museum (SAM) to introduce the topic of reaching out to loved ones to show care for them. Through a virtual tour by SAM, they looked at various pieces of photography from The Learning Gallery (TLG), which brought about a conversation on the importance of staying connected with our loved ones. The children then designed postcards in class and mailed them to their own loved ones. They also created “family missions” made up of fun tasks they had to complete with their family members. This was especially meaningful for those with a family member working overseas and waiting to reunite with their loved ones at home!

Bringing Cheer to Seniors

Bethesda (Bedok-Tampines) Kindergarten The children and their parents blessed the seniors on the Bethesda Care Services (BCS) Meals-On-Wheels programme with Festive Packs filled with food and other essential items. Their contributions of 208 packs brought cheer to the frail and homebound seniors. Each festive pack included a handmade card by the children.

It is extremely sweet of the children and parents to give us this goodie bag, thank you to all little children and their parents, and also volunteers who came over to give the goodie bag. God bless! – Mdm Latha, a beneficiary of BCS.

The Kindness Quilt

British Council (Singapore) Pre-School

Inspired by the story, ‘The Kindness Quilt’, the children put together scrap cloths with their thoughts written on them, on what kindness means to them, and turned them into their very own quilt. The centre worked with All Saints Home to prepare a performance for the elderly to brighten up their day. Discovering that the elderly at the Home were in need of blood pressure monitors, the children held a bake sale. They fulfilled orders for banana cakes, cookies, blueberry muffins and brownies, and raised sufficient funds for a few blood pressure monitors, as well as hampers for the staff as appreciation for taking care of the elderly!

Kindness Is A Gift That Anyone Can Give Carpe Diem Childcare Resort

The school decided to focus on kindness for their project, especially towards persons with disabilities. After reading the book, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?”, the children played a bucket relay to develop their understanding of how an extra hand makes a difference. They learned about those who are visually handicapped and deaf, and learned basic sign language as a form of communication. They played games using sign language, and even created an awareness kit and bookmarks while wearing blindfolds, which they then distributed to family and friends!

11

Virtual Kindness: Nothing Can Stop Kindness Carpe Diem SchoolHouse

To promote and foster love, compassion and care for persons who are sick and in need, the centre decided to collaborate with Club Rainbow Singapore for their project. Children worked with their parents to make “Well Wishes Cards” and mailed them to the patients under Club Rainbow. To help raise funds for the beneficiaries of Club Rainbow and their neighbourhood community cleaners, the children created a poster, a video and letters to parents about their project. Together, they raised a total of $2,400!

Sprinkle Kindness in the Community

Cherie Hearts @ Charlton Pte Ltd The Cherie Hearts Young Entrepreneurs are back, this time making worm-themed arts and crafts ranging from worm mugs made from earth clay, to worm design tote bags and pencil cases. The items were auctioned, and the children raised a total of $4,088 to benefit their community partners, Moonlight Home for the Aged and Handicapped, TOUCH Community Senior Activity Centre, SPD (Serving People with Disabilities), and Society for the Aged Sick. They also baked healthier donuts to raise a total of $163 for TOUCH Senior Activity Centre. The children enjoyed learning how to “sprinkle” kindness in the community.

12

Stay Connected with the Community Ci Ai Education Incubator

The centre’s project aimed to create awareness on how to protect and take care of plants in the environment and at home, and how to make use of recycled materials. The centre also wanted to promote social connections with the community, and shared the chilli plants they grew with the residents in the neighbourhood! They hope this project will build in the children long-term habits of using recycled materials, planting edible plants, and sharing their harvest with the community.

Migrant Workers, You Can Count On Me! E-Bridge Pre-School (Montreal Link)

During a discussion, the children showed their concern towards news related to migrant workers, and asked questions such as why the construction workers stay in the dorm and where their families were. Through befriending a migrant worker in the neighbourhood, the children discovered that the workers’ worksites can be hazardous if not careful and that they miss their families back home. The children prepared a special performance to cheer the migrant workers, and even celebrated Father’s Day by making 70 cards which were distributed to them. The centre hopes that their gesture brings the workers hope and recognition that their sacrifices for their families were worth it.

13

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

Eshkol Valley @ Northstar Pte Ltd The school partnered with the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), the national sports body for Persons with Disabilities for this year’s project. To show their support for our Singapore Paralympians, the students took part in the Im’possible Celebration campaign, consisting of activities such as obstacle buddy race, creative cheer, and colouring competition. They were also very honored to have Ms Syahidah Alim, Singapore’s first para-archer, to conduct an interactive storytime. Her inspiring life story talks about important values such as perseverance and determination.

Gift-A-Meal

Jamiyah Kindergarten The school’s project focused on collaboration with Jamiyah Food Bank to organise a food donation drive. The objective of the project was to inculcate the importance of sharing food, and to create awareness of needy families in our community. Parents and families actively participated by contributing non-perishable food items. Students were involved in the process of sorting the food items and preparing well wishes cards for the beneficiaries, before sending them to the Foodbank.

14

Giving Back to the Migrant Workers

Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse @ Cactus

The children wanted to show their gratitude to migrant workers by packing and delivering care packs to them. The care packs consist of Halal biscuits, drinks, hand sanitiser, medical grade masks, disposable razors, handmade cards, and handmade shrink art keychains. The project allowed the children to express their kindness and appreciation towards people around them, and enabled them to experience “giving back” to others in our community.

Compassion

Lavender Meadows Academy The children showed support to Project Dignity, which helps to restore the dignity of differently abled and disadvantaged persons through vocation. The school’s stakeholders supported Project Dignity by purchasing mooncakes made by them. The children showed their compassion by making Mid-Autumn greeting cards to support their Elderly and Needy Families Project.

15

A Paw In Need

Little Footprints Preschool (ITE West) The centre worked with Preschool Market (Kindred Studio) and Purely Adoptions with the aim to instil in children a love for animals, and to make a difference in both the children and the animals’ lives. The project taught children the correct ways to care for animals, especially our community cats. Together as a class, the children brainstormed ways to build durable and cosy community cat houses using recycled materials gathered from Kindred Studio.

Stay Connected, Make a Difference

Little Footprints Preschool (Woodlands 877) The children wanted to spread love and care to the elderly, especially those living in old folks’ homes. They understood that the restrictions on visits and other physical interactions due to COVID-19 have taken a toll on our seniors’ emotional and mental health. The children showed their appreciation and love to their own grandparents by gifting them a photo frame made from recyclable materials. They then had a virtual interaction session with the elderly and their carers from Woodlands Care Home. They sang to them ‘Chan Mali Chan’ and played ‘Simon Says’. It was a simple yet meaningful gesture, and the children managed to put a smile on everyone’s faces!

16

Being Nice to Others Little Green House @ Jurong West 502

Inspired by a news article on Good Samaritans, the children wanted their project to be about being kind to others. They each created their own Kindness bucket to bring home. Their parents wrote down acts of kindness they observed in their children and placed the slips of paper in the bucket. The children also wrote what Kindness meant to them based on the letters that form the word ‘Kindness’. The children learned that everyone has different perceptions on what Kindness means to them.

Our Little Ways of Showing We Care

Little Green House @ Serangoon 553 The children made use of recyclable materials such as tissue boxes and rolls, old newspapers, empty cans, egg trays, milk cartons and others to create pencil holders, cute containers, plant pot and holders and wrapping papers. They exchange the crafts for goodies donated by the parents. All proceeds were donated to the SunLove Nursing Home at Buangkok View.

17

You’ve Got A Friend in Me Little Treasures Childcare @ Macpherson

Friendships are vital to a child’s development. It has a huge impact on a child’s well-being, and teaches them how to socialize with other people. The project involved the whole centre to write friendship letters to each other, which they then mailed to each other’s homes. Since SingPost was near their centre, the children posted the friendship letters themselves. This project gave an opportunity to celebrate diversity by caring for friends regardless of nationality, and strengthened friendships among the children.

Harvesting Blue Pea Pods MapleBear Grandstand

In partnership with Preschool Market, the centre used recyclable materials to make lava lamps and planting pots. They decided to harvest edible plants to share with their neighbours. They planted blue pea seeds which would grow into flowers that can be used in food and drinks! The children enjoyed getting to know the people in their community while distributing the blue pea pods to them and sharing with them the benefits of the flowers.

18

A Pocketful of Love MapleBear Headstart Pte Ltd

The children brought joy to the elderly at Geylang East Home for the Aged. an kindness be taught? Yes, if you ask Ms Sharon Lee, sharing a thank-you note a six-year-old pupil at her pre-school centre made during a donation drive for migrant workers. The message penned by Elden Tan says “Thank you for building our home”. Six simple words, yet they filled Ms Lee’s heart with so much pride. Elden’s hand-written note was part of Little Footprints Preschool @ Punggol Beach’s learning activity for this year’s edition of the Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) initiative by the Early Childhood Development Agency. The SSDB initiative has developed into a movement in the early childhood sector, with participation numbers increasing from 150 pre-schools and 8,000 pre-schoolers to some 1,050 pre-schools and 71,000 children this year, despite the pandemic. This year’s SSDB theme – Stay Connected, Make a Difference – is particularly important as the pandemic has radically changed how we view human connection and communication. Safe distancing means educators have to find new ways to help children connect with the wider community, while exposing them to social causes and real-world issues.

Planting seeds of compassion

For example, PCF Sparkletots @ Bukit Timah Blk 305 used video-conferencing tool Zoom to connect their pupils with healthcare workers on the front line of Singapore’s battle against the pandemic. The pre-school set up a Zoom session with a parent who is a nurse. She shared how she cared for Covid-19 patients and what it meant to be a front-liner.

7 & 8. The pupils of Carpe Diem Schoolhouse @ Toh Yi Drive made and mailed cards conveying their well wishes, as well as recorded storytelling activities and exercise routines, to encourage chronically ill children at Club Rainbow.

Building an inclusive, stronger community 5 & 6. The pupils at My First Skool @ Choa Chu Kang Blk 684A collected bottles for St Luke’s ElderCare gardening projects. To encourage the seniors to stay active, the children also ran online exercise sessions for the seniors to join in.

“We were humbled by the frontliners’ sacrifices, dedication and unwavering efforts in managing the Covid-19 pandemic,” says senior centre principal Mrs Sumitra Tiwari. Following the sharing session, the children role-played as doctors and nurses, pretending to check their friends’ temperatures, record their observations and prescribe medicine. “They asked many questions about medical equipment and how doctors use them to cure the sick and save lives,” she adds. The pre-schoolers also created posters promoting acts of kindness towards healthcare workers. These posters were displayed at their neighbourhood community art gallery. The pandemic also drew attention to the plight of migrant workers. At Little Footprints Preschool @ Punggol Beach, Ms Lee used YouTube videos about migrant workers to get young children

thinking about the contributions of migrant workers. “Teachers helped relate the videos to the children’s daily lives. We asked them how they would feel if they were in the migrant workers’ shoes, and children were encouraged to share their feelings,” explains Ms Lee. She was initially unsure if parents would be supportive of a donation drive for migrant workers as some parents might have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. The response put her concerns to rest. The children and their families donated food and toiletries, and penned thoughtful messages, like Elden’s, for migrant workers at a construction company. “I hope we were able to bring warmth and smiles to the migrant workers,” she says. More importantly, projects like this encourage children to show care and kindness to people they have never met.

“Many times, we take for granted what we have in this world… Being able to spread awareness of kindness and empathy to the younger generation and help them to see things from a different lens is truly satisfying.” Ms Nicola Emuang, principal, Little Atlas Preschool

Creating an inclusive culture where people are respected and feel appreciated extends beyond migrant workers. At Little Atlas Preschool, principal Nicola Emuang roped in a deaf parent to conduct a sharing session. The parent described the difficulties she faced during her childhood, says Ms Emuang. It was a great way to help children see things from a different perspective and build empathy, acceptance and respect for differences. “At the end of the session, phrases such as ‘Thank you’, ‘Please’ and ‘I love you’ were exchanged through lip reading and sign language,” she shares. Also using the SSDB initiative to shine a little light where it was needed is Carpe Diem Schoolhouse @ Toh Yi Drive, which joined hands with Club Rainbow Singapore to raise money for beneficiaries and buy care packs for community helpers. The school also recorded virtual storytelling and exercise routines by the pre-schoolers to share with families of children who suffer from major chronic and potentially lifethreatening illnesses. My First Skool @ Choa Chu Kang Blk 684A is working with St Luke’s ElderCare. Its pupils engaged with the elderly via Zoom by playing virtual Bingo games and doing simple stretching exercises together. The children also collected recycled bottles to supplement St Luke’s gardening projects. These projects not only instil a spirit of giving in children, but also help strengthen

ties between the pre-schools, families of the children and the wider community. As Ms Emuang puts it: “Many times, we take for granted what we have in this world… Being able to spread awareness of kindness and empathy to the younger generation and help them to see things from a different lens is truly satisfying.”

Learning curve for teachers, too

While children are at the heart of the SSDB initiative, the teachers behind the projects find them extremely meaningful. Mrs Tiwari’s yearly SSDB initiatives have seen her take on various projects beyond the classroom, allowing her to engage a wider group of people. “SSDB taught me that the smallest things can have a big impact on others, and by embarking on projects with them, I’ve been able to nurture children holistically by getting them involved in activities that teach them to be confident, creative learners with caring hearts,” she says. “Witnessing how the children are involved in their community has truly touched my heart and inspired me to do more to help others.” BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Our deepest appreciation to our partners for making Start Small Dream Big 2021 a big success!

44

Started in 2000, the President’s Challenge is an annual community outreach and fund-raising campaign for beneficiaries selected yearly by the President’s Office. The Challenge represents a coming together of people from all walks of life, under the President’s patronage, to help the less fortunate. It serves as a call to all Singaporeans to do their part to build a more caring and inclusive society by giving of their time, skills and enterprise. In 2012, Dr Tony Tan expanded the areas of focus to include Volunteerism and Social Enterprise. In 2018, President Halimah Yacob refocused the effort of President’s Challenge towards the empowerment of vulnerable groups with skills and employability. An Empowering for Life Fund was set up to support programmes in skills upgrading, capacity building and employment of vulnerable groups. President’s Challenge aims to raise $10 million for the Empowering for Life Fund over the next 5 years and the Government will provide dollar-for-dollar matching. More information on President’s Challenge can be found at http://www.pc.org.sg.

2021 ‘Start Small Dream Big’ was initiated by the Early Childhood Development Agency in 2015 to celebrate SG50 and the President’s Challenge’s 15th anniversary. Its aim is to build an early childhood community that inculcates good values in our children and encourages them to give back to society. ECDA works with participating centres to design and implement community service projects over a period of six months, with the hope of making volunteerism a way of life for our young. In 2021, more than 71,000 children from some 1,050 preschool centres participated in the 'Start Small Dream Big' movement. We believe that children are never too young to contribute to the community. We are heartened to see so many ‘Start Small Dream Big’ projects that aim to touch lives and effect change. Through these projects, our children learn to be kind, compassionate and active citizens. Parents and family members too play an important part in the children’s efforts. We thank all of you for your support. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something! It is our wish for the nation that every child do a good deed every day, to make the world a better place. Read more stories from our ‘Start Small Dream Big’ centres at: http://www.startsmalldreambig.sg. More information on Start Small Dream Big can be found at: http://www.growatbeanstalk.sg.
