In comparison to my submission for Context of Practice last year, this project has been fuelled by a deeper sense of purpose in terms of what I want to learn more about in relation to my current practice. Investigating a topic more specific to my own creative interests has allowed me to further my understanding of myself as a creative practitioner and the discipline of illustration. It has helped me to realize how theoretical and practical research can benefit me and progress both the key conceptual and visual aspects of my practice. Investigating visual communication in relation to theories such as semiotics and those of abstract art movements of the past, has helped me to realize methods through which I can use abstraction in a functional and meaningful way. Creating conceptual and abstract imagery has been a key aspect of my practice throughout this year, evolving primarily through OUIL504, and I feel that COP has provided me with a better contextual understanding of abstract art practices in relation to my own illustrations. The set tasks within this module have progressed my abilities in the evaluation and triangulation of key texts, as well as the analysis of images. I have also improved in my ability to collate and summarize research – leading to better reflections on my progress and making connections between different aspects of my project. I think one of the key successes of my project this year, where my past submissions in this module have lacked, is the link between both my theoretical and practical research. Making connections between key theories and practical exercises has led to further personal reflection that I think has been really valuable to my practice and understanding of illustration as a discipline. I have also really enjoyed investigating more extensively into a different form of art practice, rather than just the work of other illustrators. This has made me realize that I need to be taking inspiration from all forms of art, and that this can lead to more original thought. In relation to my essay I regret not having done more extensive research. Initially I struggled with finding appropriate sources through which to research my subject, as I feel there is a lack of formal academic writing on illustration as a discipline. Relating my topic to other art forms, such as abstract art movements, was essential in opening up my investigation to a broader range of research. However, in some ways I feel that I have only touched the surface of what I would like to learn through this research project and this is why I will be continuing it on into COP3. Another element I struggled with during COP was beginning the visual journal. This year with it being delivered through a concertina book, I was confused as to how I needed to use these given dimensions and the more formal presentation of this work made it seem a lot more daunting. In hindsight, however, instead of avoiding it, I should have just made a start as well as more extensively planned how I was going to carry out my practical investigation. There are definitely some key aspects of learning I would like to apply to COP3 next year, as well as other future modules. Overall I think my deeper understanding of visual communication and abstraction in relation

to illustration hopefully marks a stage in which I have found something I am really passionate about and will become central to my practice. I will continue to use COP as a method to further explore theories that have direct relation and importance to my practice. I would like to use this to find a way of making images that makes me stand out and is unique to me as an illustrator. It may sound obvious, but I think it is also important to remember that the amount and depth of research you do impacts directly on the quality of your outcomes. In COP3 I would like to carry out much more extensive and in depth research of my topic. I think a key aspect of making this happen is also, as always, to maintain effective time management. This is something I have been mindful to improve this year - especially in light of the heavy workload. It is important to keep on top of things and to maintain an understanding of all modules, instead of just focusing on one or a couple.
