Summer research

Focusing on gathering information about Murakami’s life and his novels, and then drawing in response to this.

Final zine It came to my a*en,on in the ďŹ nal crit for this outcome that my images lacked authorship - changing my image-making process and idea genera,on for the rest of the module.

Roughing and tes1ng media for idea pictures brief

In a crit to look at the roughs and tests for idea pictures I posed a debate between my collage and painted gouache roughs. People having a preference for my gouache work made me realize that adding ďŹ gura,ve aspects to my work could give it more authorship.

Final outcomes for idea pictures This final outcome was my first a*empt in combining the graphic, simple aspect of my prac,ce with more figura,ve drawings.

Roughing for print ideas By this point in the module you can really see more figura,ve and naïve drawings emerging in my work. I also discovered that drawing outside format constraints first and then using thumbnails to edit the composi,on of my images was the most effec,ve form of roughing for me.

Final print from screenprint workshop This was the first design I made using bitmapped photographs – the success of this print made me consider and eventually use screenprint as my final print process for printed pictures.

Mono and lino print experiments

Once I had decided to use screenprint as my ďŹ nal process I began to use other print methods to generate images for then conver,ng into posi, ves. The aim of this was to try and make my ďŹ nal prints retain the texture of monoprint and lino, but be able to use screenprint to make my prints clean, crisp and easily reproducible.

Experimen1ng with crea1ng screenprint posi1ves using monoprint and linoprint experiments, combined with bitmapped photographs, on photoshop. -- Through this experimenta,on I found that isola,ng my areas of colour and adding texture to them was the best way to achieve a more balanced and pleasing composi,on.

I really valude the composi,on, colour pale*es, concept and overall content of my ďŹ nal prints; however found that in further reec,on, using digital processes to generate my screenprint posi, ves had erased too much of a sense of the handmade in the ďŹ nal outcomes to suit my personal taste.

Storyboarding

Over Christmas I started a li*le book full of storyboarding and found using this process exhaus, vely really eec,ve in genera,ng and reďŹ ning ideas for my s,ngs.

AKer reflec,ng on my final prints, moving onto my s,ngs I tried to retain as much of a sense of the handmade as possible by adding moving texture and limi,ng my edi,ng on photoshop.
