The following are available for fairgoers: Free handicapped parking is available just inside the east gate. Shuttles from the Integrity Title west parking lot leave every 15 minutes during regular fair hours. Courtesy shuttles from the other lots are available by asking at the gate.
Parking changes for the Douglas County Fair All parking spots in the East Gate lot must be purchased in advance by purchasing a Golden Ticket. Drivers will not be able to pull up and buy a parking lot on the spot.

Those who have a golden ticket can access the East Gate lot. Handicapped parking is also available at the East Gate. Parking remains free in the Integrity Title west parking lot.

You can go on the rides either by buying tickets or wristbands at the fair or by buying wristbands in advance that are good for unlimited rides during certain hours. Wristbands are on sale now at dcmnfair.com. Buy ahead of time and save. Here’s the schedule for the 2022 Unlimited Ride Wristband Sessions:

Wristbands purchased at the fair will be $30/wristband and also available for use at the above listed times. Without a wristband, fairgoers who wish to go on the rides can buy tickets at the fair. Ride tickets purchased at the fair cost $25 for 20 single tickets, $50 for 40 single tickets, and $1.50 for one single ticket. Kiddie Rides require 3 tickets, other rides require 4 tickets and large speciality rides require 5 tickets. Tickets can be used on rides anytime the Midway is open.

Kid’s Day at the fair
Thursday is Kid’s Day at the fair and Clueless the Clown will be in the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand doing free balloon art in the late afternoon and early evening. It’s part of the extra fun things in store for the kids who come to the fair. A face painter will be around on Kid’s Day doing free face painting in the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand from 12-1:30 p.m. Kids also have an excellent chance of winning a bike, as not only will the Douglas County Fair give away a girl’s bike and a boy’s bike at 5 p.m. at the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage each day of the fair, but KIK-FM plans to give away 24 bikes on Thursday at the Hubbard Radio Stage at 3 p.m. Register to win anytime prior to 3 p.m. at the Hubbard Radio State. Must be present to win. The Veteran’s Council will also be doing a kid’s bike giveaway daily at 6:30 p.m. at the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage. The magician has been at the fair before with his act, Halls of Magic. This year, he’ll be at the fair Wednesday and Thursday starting at noon, moving through the fairgrounds with balloon animals and magic tricks. Kids age 10 and under get in free to the Douglas County Fair, not just on Kids Day, but every day.

Where to go at the fair if your parents are lost
If you’re a child who can’t find your parents at the Douglas County Fair, Lyla Radil knows exactly how to help. “You’re not lost, your mommy and daddy are lost,” she will tell you. Then she’ll help you find them. Radil is a veteran EMS volunteer who coordinates the first responder crew that helps at the fair. They try to schedule two volunteers at a time in fourhour shifts from noon until 10 p.m. Their trailer is near the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand, Lyla Radil stocked with EMS Volunteer backboards, ice packs, oxygen, and bandages. This is where to go if you need a Band-aid, or if your parents have wandered away from you. Hearing that it’s their parents who are missing “calms them down pretty good,” Radil said. 6 Fair Essentials 2022 dcmnfair.com
Then she gets on her radio and before long, volunteers are scanning the grounds for frantic adults and also announcing it over the speaker system, and soon, parents and child are reunited. Radil advises all parents to show their children the emergency trailer as a safe place to go in case they get separated. Douglas County EMS volunteers have worked at the fair for at least 15 years, Radil said. They coordinate closely with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as well as Douglas County Emergency Management. In case of bad weather, they help guide fairgoers to storm shelters in the Runestone Community Center and below the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand. They respond to medical needs such as broken bones, diabetic reactions and bee stings — although for some reason, there seem to be fewer bee stings than there used to be, she said. Radil stays on the fairgrounds from morning to night each day of the fair. She has served with the Forada First Responders for 32 years and is the president of the Lakes Area First Responders. She was a 4-H mom and is now a 4-H grandma, and was helping with cuts and bruises at the fair long
before the EMS crew began working there. She also knows the fair for another reason; now retired from the sheriff’s office, she used to coordinate the Sentence to Serve inmates chosen to help set up the fair. The volunteers come from cities throughout the county. In their communities, they are the ones who rush to car wrecks and heart attacks. They undergo medical training and many of them are trained weather spotters. Working the fair is generally pretty mellow, but things do happen. One time, the EMS team and a pair of off-duty police officers saved the life of a fairgoer who was in cardiac arrest, she said. That was rewarding, especially as she knew the person. Last year, bad weather forced the temporary closing of the Midway rides. “When our weather comes in, that’s probably the scariest,” Radil said. “It changes so quickly.” For fairgoers who want to avoid needing an EMS volunteer, she advises one important precaution. “People forget they need to drink water,” she said. “Have fun but stay hydrated.”
Princess Pageant

One girl age 5-9 will be named the Douglas County Fair 2022 Fair Princess during the annual Princess Pageant. The girls will be judged on the best dress, best private interview and the best onstage interview. Two weeks before the pageant they will learn how to walk on stage, wave to the audience and dance as a group.
The girls make new friends, practice together and get a pizza and pool party before the fair, and receive recognition at the fair. The pageant will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 5 p.m. on the Hubbard Radio Stage.
Demo Derby and Lawn Mower Derby The clash of riding lawn mowers has proved so popular that the event is returning to the Douglas County Fair for the fifth year. It’s planned for 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand. This event is sponsored by Alex Power Equipment. For more information, visit www.dcmnfair. com. Under the information tab, click on “Competitions and Contests,” and scroll down. Lawn Mower Derby registration starts at 1 p.m. on
Saturday – no early registration. There will be a Stock Class and a Modified Class if there are four or more tractors. There is no entry fee; however, participants must buy a fair admission ticket. Cash prizes will be awarded. Again this year, the Demo Derby is at 6 p.m. Friday at the Glenwood State Bank Local Livestock Eats Corn & Soybeans Grandstand. Grown by Farmers Locally This event is sponsored by the Viking Speedway, not the Douglas County Fair, so there is a charge to attend. Livestock is the No. 1 customer of soybean meal, consuming 98% fo the soybean meal produced in the U.S.

Senior Day at the Douglas County Fair Seniors who visit the Douglas County Fair on Senior Day will get the full shine and sparkle of a brand-new fair, as Senior Day is scheduled for the first day of the fair this year. Senior Day normally takes place on the second day of the fair, but the Fair Board decided to move it up this year to Wednesday, said Fair Board Member Molly Maudal. “There’s nothing like the first day,” she said. On Senior Day, those age 65 and over have reduced price admission of $7. Nathan’s Old-Time Band will play polka and country music on the Hubbard Radio Stage, and Knute Nelson Heritage Square will offer plenty of interest to those aged 65 and up. Agencies that serve seniors will be back at the fair this year, said Kathryn LeBrasseur, who is organizing the events. They’ll explain about various 8 Fair Essentials 2022 dcmnfair.com
services available to seniors, such as fuel assistance. Seniors will also be able to get free special landline phones and cell phones that are designed to be easier to see, dial and hear. They are paid for through a special telephone tax for those who can’t see or hear as well as they used to. So many people stop at the Heritage Square booths during the fair that the agencies say they “get more accomplished that day than a week at the office,” LeBrasseur said. “It’s just fantastic,” she said. “They haven’t been able to come out in a couple years. This is the first time in three years they have been able to come out.” On Thursday, seniors will get a chance to meet the county’s emergency management director, Julie Anderson, which LeBrasseur said is particularly timely, given this summer’s deadly storms.
BALANCE AND STRETCH SCHEDULE
The Nelson Wellness Center will offer a Balance and Stretch class near the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage on Senior Day at the fair. The sessions are set for: 12 to 12:15 p.m. 1 to 1:15 p.m. 3 to 3:15 p.m. 4 to 4:15 p.m. Seniors will also hear how the Douglas County Library can help them get online. With so many things going online now, library staff can help them set up an email account or send documents. A staff member will bring useful technical equipment, she said.
Music has become a big attraction at other stages on the fairgrounds, and this year, the music on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage has been coordinated with other performances to prevent overlap. Seniors might want to consider making Heritage Square their home base during the fair, LeBrasseur said. It’s close to the livestock and 4-H buildings, and they can grab a bottle of cold water for free, courtesy of Henry’s Foods. Senior day also is the day when Century Farms and Outstanding Seniors are recognized. Of course, every day at the fair, there’ll be lefse for sale, as well as rommegrot and rosettes in the log cabin. LeBrasseur has been around fairs her entire life, as her father used to harness race at the Douglas County Fair, and she also judged canned goods at the Alaska State Fair when she lived there. “We probably have one of the best county fairs going,” she said.

Local folk groups like Mikko and Friends will entertain crowds at the Douglas County Fair this year, as will regional faves like Fabulous Armadillos and Twin Cities cover band Generation Rock. This year’s lineup is pared down from last year, when some groups were scheduled at the same time on different stages. This year’s schedule is designed to prevent that from happening. Here’s a rundown of the various musical acts at this year’s fair: WEDNESDAY 10 a.m.-Noon. Nathan’s Oldtime Band on the Hubbard Radio Stage Started in January 2012 by a group of young musicians, this band’s polka and country music unites all age groups in dance and having fun. 12-2 p.m. Katy’s Swing Band on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage These musicians, based at the Alexandria Senior Center, play music of various genres including swing, rock and roll, big band dance music and show tunes. They perform for various community events throughout the year.

3-5 p.m. Good Company Band on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage Good Company originated from church musicians that share a love for folk, bluegrass and classic country music with a unique twist. 7 p.m. Fabulous Armadillos on the Alomere Health Main Stage This St. Cloud band recreates songs from many musical genres, including country, Motown, heavy metal and 70s soft rock. They are known for their themed shows at Pioneer Place On Fifth Theater in St. Cloud. Their name derives from a nickname for keyboardist Greg “Gary D.” Armstrong, once a member of the Bobby Vee Band, and they call their fans “Dilloheads.” THURSDAY 1-3 p.m. Sax Appeal on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage Father-daughter duo Chuck and Michelle Wencl will perform on saxophone and vocals. 3-5 p.m. Paradocx on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage Two retired physicians, Dr. Bill Glade and Dr. John Emblom, debuted their band in 2019 in Alexandria. Their music ranges from Hank Williams to Pink Floyd.

FRIDAY 1-3 p.m. Mikko and Friends on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage Mikko Cowdery of Osakis has been a miner and a newspaper publisher. He is now known for the Celtic, Irish and folk music he performs on a multitude of instruments, alone and in groups.
3-5 p.m. Sellin Family on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage Tom Sellin and his daughter and granddaughter perform catchy folk tunes, favorite hymns and rock covers. 8 p.m. Generation Rock on the Alomere Health Main Stage Together since 2014, this Twin Cities band covers classic rock with a splash of other genres. SATURDAY 12 p.m. Red Letter Band on the Hubbard Radio Stage Long Prairie’s Red Letter Band have had four singles reach the top of the Inspirational Country Music charts, which tracks musicians who carry a message of faith, family and country. Influenced by their Christian faith, the group also covers a wide variety of today’s country and classic country hits.

7 p.m. Shane Martin on the Alomere Health Main Stage Shane Martin, who has become a familiar face to lakes area music lovers, returns to the Douglas County Fair. He gained recognition as a Top 5 finalist in the 2012 Texaco Country Showdown where he competed for “Best New Act in Country Music.” Martin performs 175 regional shows per year, and his band consists of veteran musicians that have performed at some of the top country music festivals in the country, including Moondance Country Jam, Rockwoods Jamfest and Winstock.

HERE’S THE BEEF: Glacial Ridge Cattlemen to serve steak Douglas County fairgoers are used to delicious pork chops served by the Douglas Grant County Pork Producers, who will serve on Saturday. This year, on Friday, they can also dine on steak, thanks to the Glacial Ridge Cattlemen’s Association, who will be serving on Friday. Fair Board Member Molly Maudal said she hopes to start a new tradition by incorporating local beef into the fair. “I think it’s really important to promote the beef industry,” said Maudal. The Glacial Ridge Cattlemen’s Association will serve steak starting at 4:30 p.m. right outside the Game & Fish Building, the same place the pork producers set up. Other new foods lined up for the year include Mi Mexico of Morris & Benson and Happy Lo Foods who will have either food trucks or tents in Calorie Lane.

Douglas County’s Got Talent! The fair’s annual contest is set for Saturday, Aug. 20, at 3:30 p.m. at the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage. It’s open to musical performances, juggling, or any other unique talent a competitor might bring. There will be competition for three classes: 1st class will consist of anyone up to the age of 12 2nd class will be for ages 13 to 18 and 3rd class will be open to anyone who wants to show off their talent. The winner will be able to move on to the Minnesota State Fair for their talent competition.

4-H projects auctioned for muscular dystrophy For the fourth year in a row, 4-H’ers who bring projects to the Douglas County Fair can choose to donate them to a good cause — a silent auction to raise money for muscular dystrophy. Seth Engelbrecht, a 4-H’er who will be a junior at Alexandria Area High School this fall, has muscular dystrophy, and says his cousin started the auction. The money goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. His kind of muscular dystrophy is not as severe as some, but he can’t run or play sports. He hopes that researchers can come up with a treatment that will help him one day, and has heard of research for certain kinds of the disease. “Mine is more rare,” he said. “They’re focusing on more severe varieties.” Seth has participated in 4-H since elementary school. A farm kid, he is also active
in FFA and went to state for livestock judging. He plans to build a fishing rod holder for this year’s fair. Members of 4-H bring all kinds of projects, including woodwork, artwork, quilts and models. The silent auction will run all four days of the fair, and end at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Tables will be set up with bid sheets in the 4-H exhibit building. Projects that are being donated will be labeled. Last year, the auction raised about $1,000, he said. The auction is just one way that 4-H members have shown they care about him. The Lake Mary Troopers, his club, replaced the stairs to the rabbit building on the fairgrounds with a ramp so he could access the building better. One of his 4-H activities is to show rabbits. “They just do it because they want to help,” he said.
