gray-painted rooms

Brighten up

Gray is a common wall color because it works well with most home decor styles. However, sometimes painting a room this color can make it look cold and sterile. Here’s how to ensure your gray-painted interior is warm and inviting. Use the right materials. Introduce warmth and depth to a gray room by styling it with items made of natural materials. Choose rattan, wicker, wool and linen for your furniture and decorative items. Wood is a good choice for tables, chairs and floors. Including plants will add life and color to the space. Play with accent colors. In order to add interest to your gray interior, choose one or two accent colors. If you prefer a soft look, opt for pastel tones such as blush pink, butter yellow or sky blue. If you prefer to make a statement, consider neon or jewel tones. When used minimally in an otherwise neutral room, they won’t be overwhelming. Lastly, be sure to choose a neutral gray with no warm or cool undertones. This will guarantee that your walls match everything, allowing you to change your decor without repainting.

Liven up a corner in your home

Is there a corner in your home that could use a makeover? If so, here are seven items you can use to spruce it up.

Lighting. Brighten up a dim corner with a few pendant lights hung at different heights. A classic floor lamp is another good option.

Bookshelf. Whether it’s designed for a corner or simply placed at an angle, a unit filled with books is a practical way to style an unused space.

Baskets. Suspend baskets from the ceiling or arrange them on wallmounted shelves. You can do the same with wooden crates, or if the corner is in a kitchen, you can hang pots and pans.

Frames. Hang an assortment of family photos, prints and artwork on both of the adjoining walls in an empty corner. Use similar frames for a cohesive look. Armchair. Transform an unoccupied corner into a comfortable reading nook with a soft, upholstered armchair. If you need a more compact alternative, consider a pouf, padded chair or stool.

6 Fall Home Guide • 2020

Plants. Breathe new life into a forgotten corner with an arrangement of potted plants. You can display them on a stand, arrange them on the floor or suspend them with macrame hangers. Shelving. Install a few cornershaped floating shelves and decorate them with trinkets or practical items. You could display glassware in a dining room, cosmetics in a bathroom or candles in a living room.

Five

components of a cozy nursery

If you have a baby on the way, you’ll probably want to think about creating a nursery. Here are five design elements to incorporate into the room.

A soft, neutral palette. Create a soothing space with light tones and pastel colors. Options like seafoam green, lavender and cream are lovely alternatives to the traditional pale pink and baby blue. Be sure to use eco-friendly paint that doesn’t contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A durable floor. Favor strong materials like bamboo, cork and vinyl that will provide a comfortable play surface for your infant. Avoid flooring with a glossy finish as it will highlight every scratch and imperfection. A soft rug makes a nice addition to the space, and there are colors and designs for every taste. An ergonomic chair. A comfortable place to feed, soothe and read to your baby is essential. Opt for a rocking

chair, glider or simply one with sufficient padding. For those 3 a.m. wakeup calls, treat yourself to a rocking ottoman as well so you’ll have a place to rest your feet. A versatile changing table. An increasing number of vendors now offer multi-purpose changing tables that double as a dresser or bookcase. In addition to being an attractive piece of furniture, you’ll have plenty of stor-

age space for clothes and toys as your child gets older. A safe place to sleep. Before you purchase a new or second-hand crib, make sure it adheres to the latest government safety standards. This includes having a tight-fitting mattress and bars that are no more than 2-3/8 inches apart. You should also be aware that drop-side cribs are a hazard and their sale is prohibited.

ways to display your wine bottles

If you want to display your wine collection, here are three simple ways to showcase your bottles. ON A BAR CART Opt for one made of reclaimed wood or with an industrial metal frame. Lay out an assortment of bottles and glasses to create a look that’s as stylish as it is functional. Make sure your cart is on wheels so you can entertain in any room in your home. IN A HUTCH Traditionally used to display dishware, this classic piece of dining room furniture can also be used to showcase your wine collection. Choose one with plenty of space and open shelving to highlight bottles and glassware. You’ll also want your hutch to have drawers and cabinets as these are helpful for storing bar tools and accessories.

ON A MOUNTED RACK From simple metal pegs to elaborate wood shelving, you can display your wine collection by hanging it from a wall-mounted rack. You can choose either a vertical or horizontal model and select a style that suits your decor.

Keep in mind that the ideal temperature for storing all wines, red or white, is around 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, it’s best to keep bottles out of direct sunlight.

2020 trends:

Why glass partitions deserve a look If you want to create designated spaces in your home without sacrificing the airiness of open-concept living, glass partitions offer a beautiful compromise. This type of room divider helps block out noise while continuing to let in plenty of natural light. If you want to create an office space or reading nook in your living area, for example, such partitions are ideal. Alternatively, glass walls can be used to keep strong smells in the kitchen without obstructing sight lines. From intricately etched panels to industrial steel frames, glass partitions can be incorporated into any style of home and customized to fit any space. Plus, they’re typically made of tempered glass, which means they won’t shatter into sharp pieces if they accidentally break. To help you make the most of this practical and striking feature, consult an interior designer.

3 things you need to pour a concrete slab Concrete is a durable and affordable material that can be used to build a patio or walkway on your property. Here’s what you need to successfully pour a concrete slab.

A STABLE BASE Excavate a hole that’s the right dimensions for your project, then add a layer of compacted gravel that’s at least four inches deep. This facilitates

soil drainage and will help prevent the slab from shifting and cracking when the ground freezes and thaws. A STRONG FORM A form is a framework that holds the liquid concrete in place to ensure it hardens in the desired shape. For best results, use straight wood planks to build the form and firmly brace the sides. You should also reinforce the concrete with rebar to strengthen the slab and prevent cracking. A STEADY HAND When you pour the concrete, make sure it seeps into every crevice. Once the form is filled, you’ll need to remove air bubbles and smooth out the surface of the slab with a bull float and trowel. Allow the concrete to harden overnight before you carefully remove the form. Keep in mind that pouring concrete can be a challenge, particularly for large-scale projects like a garage floor. To ensure the job is done correctly, leave it to the professionals.

HARDWOOD FLOORS:

repair or replace? Have your hardwood floors seen better days? If the planks are dull, stained, damaged or creaky, you may be wondering if you should refinish them or simply start over. Here are some factors to consider before you decide.

REPAIR If you like the look of your hardwood floors, you may be able to revive them. Sanding and varnishing as well as staining the wood can extend the lifespan of your floors by a few years. If the planks are warped or worn thin, however, they’re likely beyond repair. Si milarly, if numerous damaged planks need to be replaced, you’re

probably better off starting over. REPLACE If you’re in the mood for a change, installing new flooring is an opportunity to completely transform the look of your home. Plus, it will last for many years to come. It should also be noted that renovating old floors can take several days, whereas replacing them is a fairly quick process albeit more expensive. If you’re still uncertain about whether to repair or replace them, ask a professional to evaluate the condition of your hardwood floors. He or she will be able to recommend a solution.

Three advantages of floating floors If you need to replace your flooring, keep in mind floating floors. Here’s what floating floors have to offer.

1

Superior resistance. The most common type of floating floor material is laminate, which is resistant to impact, scratches and UV ray damage. Laminate does

fine in a damp environment, so you can safely install it in a basement or bathroom.

2

Affordable price. A floating floor is an affordable solution that offers a balance between quality and price. Even if you opt for a higher quality floating floor material, the cost

is only about $5 per square foot. Installation tends to be cheaper as well.

3

Easy installation. This type of flooring is referred to as “floating” because it doesn’t need to be glued or nailed to the subfloor. Instead, each plank has grooves that make them

interlock. With a few simple tools, you can install them yourself, although you’ll likely get better results if you hire a professional. Keep in mind that floating floors can mimic the appearance of wood, ceramic or stone, and you won’t have to compromise on style.

3 reasons to consider an induction cooktop

Are you in the market for a new stove? If so, here are three benefits of opting for an induction cooktop or range.

1. Rapid cooking. Powered by electricity, an electromagnetic field beneath the glass cooktop transfers a current to the pot or pan. This efficient process directly heats up the cookware rather than warming a burner which then transfers heat to the pot. Keep in mind that the cookware must contain a

ferromagnetic metal like stainless steel or cast iron to work.

2. Easy cleaning. Since the glass cooktop doesn’t have a hot burner, stray food and spills won’t get burned to the stove. This makes cleanup a lot less strenuous. However, you should wait a few minutes before you wipe down the surface as the pot will have transferred heat onto the cooktop. 3. Consistent heating. Induction ranges and cooktops provide

consistent heat, even at their lowest setting, and allow you to make accurate temperature adjustments. Plus, since the cookware is heated directly, no energy is lost in the transfer from burner to pot. One additional thing to keep in mind about induction stoves is that they draw a fair amount of power. For this reason, you’ll need to determine whether your circuit breaker has the adequate rating. If you’re unsure, consult a licensed electrician.

The best material to

frame your windows If it’s time to replace the windows in your home, you’ll need to choose a material for the frames. Here are the most common options and what you should know about them.

VINYL Made of PVC and often supported with a metal interior, this material is easy to maintain, an effective insulator and resistant to moisture and corrosion. It’s also the most affordable window frame option. Over time, however, fluctuating temperatures can cause the corner seams to fail.

ALUMINUM This durable material requires little maintenance and is extremely weatherresistant, although exposure to sunlight can affect its appearance. Though more expensive than vinyl, these sturdy frames can be built thin to increase the surface area of glass in your windows. WOOD This timeless, warm and recyclable material is both an eco-friendly and esthetically pleasing option. However, it requires meticulous care to protect it

from water damage and rot. Alternatively, hybrid window frames include a layer of aluminum or fiberglass to shield the wood from the elements. FIBERGLASS While not as affordable as vinyl, this low-cost option offers the strongest window frame structure. It’s also resistant to temperature

fluctuations and moisture. Fiberglass tends to discolor in the sun, but it can easily be repainted. Plus, the material won’t deteriorate. All of these window frame varieties have an average lifespan of 20 to 30 years. However, if properly cared for, wood frames can last much longer.

Choosing the right Not all tiles are the same. In fact, each type has its own characteristics that make it well suited for some spaces and less than ideal for others. Here’s what you should know before you start your next tiling project. CERAMIC The durability of a ceramic tile depends on its PEI rating, which measures the surface enamel’s resistance to abrasion. Class 1 and 2 tiles are lightweight options perfect for shower walls and backsplashes. On floors, however, you’ll need at least a class 3 tile to avoid cracking the surface. PORCELAIN This material is available in a wide range of styles and can be made to look like just about any type of flooring. Porcelain is highly resistant to damage, stains and moisture, which makes it a good choice for bathrooms, kitchens and entryways.

tile

NATURAL STONE From marble and slate to granite and limestone, there’s no denying the elegance of stone tiles. However, the po rous texture of certain types makes them harder to clean and more susceptible to scratching. To prevent water damage and stains, you’ll need to regularly apply a high-quality sealant.

GLASS While not recommended for floors, glass tiles can be used to create a mosaic-styled backsplash in the kitchen or an accent piece around a bathtub. Flooring options to spruce up your garage If your concrete garage floor has seen better days or you want to protect it from stains and damage, a coating or covering can help. Here are some of the available options. COATINGS Before applying any type of coating to your concrete floor, it needs to be rigorously cleaned. This option is better suited for heated garages as the coating won’t stick to damp concrete. The most common ones are: CONCRETE PAINT. This inexpensive product can be applied like regular paint. Regardless of whether you opt for a latex or oil-based version, annual touch-ups are a must. EPOXY RESIN. This durable mate-

rial is resistant to chipping, corrosive chemicals and damage from frequent use. It’s also easy to maintain, available in a variety of colors and contains no VOCs. Whereas concrete paint is easy to apply, epoxy is tricky to work with and requires extensive preparation. For best results, hire a professional to install this coating. COVERINGS Typically, a covering is quick and easy to install. Simply give the concrete floor a thorough sweep in preparation. Although more expensive than coatings, this flooring option is immune to moisture. The two types of coverings are:

INTERLOCKING TILES. These come in a wide variety of patterns and colors, making it easy to create a custom design. You can also choose between flexible tiles that are comfortable to walk on and rigid, perforated tiles that allow snowmelt and spills to drain away. ROLLOUT MATS. Available in various sizes, colors and patterns, these thick rubber carpets are an affordable covering option. However, their soft texture makes them susceptible to damage from chemical stains and gravel imprints. If your garage floor is substantially damaged, a covering is the most effective way to give it a fresh, blemish-free surface.

Common car problems: what drivers should know If your car isn’t regularly maintained, its components can wear out prematurely and the vehicle can become dangerous to drive.

Since October is Fall Car Care Month, here are some common problems to watch out for and get promptly repaired by a professional.

OBSERVABLE ISSUES Many car defects can be detected by visually inspecting your vehicle, noticing how it handles on the road and listening for unusual sounds. For example, you might notice that: • The steering wheel shakes or pulls to one side. • One or more of the exterior lights is cracked or burned out. • The car makes a clunking noise when you drive over speed bumps. • There’s a warning light illuminated on the dashboard. • A squeaking noise can be heard when you apply the brakes.

HIDDEN PROBLEMS If you want to confirm that your vehicle is fit for all kinds of weather and road conditions, only a mechanic with a car lift can verify whether or not it’s mechanically sound. An inspection is a must to check the condition of your vehicle’s various components, including: • The exhaust system • The steering and suspension systems • The belts and hoses • The heating, cooling and ventilation systems • The braking system If a problem is detected, your mechanic can fix it using the right tools and parts.

If you notice these or other issues, schedule an appointment with a professional to have it inspected and repaired before it becomes a hazard.

WINTER CAR CARE: 3 things to remember As winter approaches, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is ready to face the difficult driving conditions ahead. Here are three tasks you should complete before the first snowstorm of the season strikes. 1. Inspect your winter tires. To be safe on the road in snowy weather, your winter tires need to be in good condition. If the tread on them is worn, they won’t be able to provide an adequate amount of traction. You can get a mechanic to inspect them or do it yourself. Some tires have tread wear indicators located inside the grooves. If the indicator is flush with the grooves, the tires need to be changed. You can also use a quarter: insert the coin inside the tread grooves upside down. If the tire doesn’t cover at least part of Washington’s head, you need to change your tires.

2. Test your windshield wipers. Your windshield wipers are another component on your car that will help keep you safe in wintery weather. Ensure that they’re in good condition by making certain that the blades stay in contact with the glass when they’re in motion and that their movements aren’t jerky. In addition, they shouldn’t be noisy or leave streaks behind. You can also slide your finger along the blades to feel for irregularities. 3. Take care of the interior. Frost on the inside of your windows is often made worse if they’re dirty, so give them a wash before the cold weather arrives. You should also switch your floor mats for plastic ones, as carpeted liners tend to retain moisture, which will make any frost issues worse.

STOCK VS. CUSTOM: which cabinets to choose?

If you’re renovating your kitchen, one of the main decisions you’ll need to make is whether to opt for stock or custom cabinetry. To help you make a choice, here are the advantages of each option.

Did you know?

The return on investment for a renovated kitchen is typically between 75 and 100 percent.

STOCK CABINETS Many home improvement stores offer a wide selection of prefabricated cabinets. You can choose from various materials, colors and finishes to match your design style. The best part about ready-made cabinets is you can take them home immediately or get them delivered within a few days. If you have a strict renovation timeline, a simple kitchen layout and a limited budget, stock cabinets are likely the right choice for you. CUSTOM CABINETS Cabinets that are made-to-measure and built by a tradesperson are guaranteed to optimize the available space in your kitchen and meet your exact style preferences. You get to decide on the size, material, color, finish, hard-

ware and more. Nothing is left to chance. If you have a flexible timeline and a fairly generous budget, custom cab-

inets are the superior option as long as they’re built and installed by experienced professionals.

5 precautions for a wood-burning fireplace

A wood-burning fireplace can add warmth and charm to your home. However, if certain precautions aren’t taken, these devices pose a serious hazard. To ensure your home and family members remain safe, here are five practices you should adopt. 1. Use the right wood. Wood smoke contains a number of pollutants. To minimize emissions, opt for hardwood like elm, maple and oak, and avoid softwood such as spruce and fir. Additionally, make sure the logs are clean and dry.

2. Install quality alarms. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential. Purchase quality devices from a recognized brand, test them regularly and always have extra batteries on hand. 3. Keep an extinguisher nearby. A single misdirected spark or fallen ember can lead to a devastating fire. Make sure you always have easy access to a fire extinguisher and that you know how to use it.

4. Store ashes safely. Keep your fireplace clean by putting hot ashes in

a sealed metal container outdoors and away from buildings and flammable materials. Wait a few days before transferring the ashes to the garbage. 5. Clean the chimney. Get a professional to clean and inspect your chimney every year. This will ensure proper ventilation and reduce the risk for chimney fires. If you carefully follow these tips, you and your family will be able to safely enjoy the benefits of having a woodburning fireplace in your home.

5 problems cars are prone to in winter and how to fix them Winter weather can lead to mechanical mishaps and be the cause of various issues with your car. Here are five common cold weather problems and how to solve them.

1. A frozen lock. Use a lock de-icer, windshield washer fluid or a hair dryer to melt the ice. If your key is entirely made of metal, you can use a lighter to heat it before slowly inserting it in the lock and (hopefully) melting the ice. 2. Iced over windows. Use a defrosting product in combination with a good quality scraper to quickly clear your windshield. To stop ice from accumulating on your windshield and windows, use a tarp or large piece of cardboard to cover them while your car’s parked. Finally, prevent frost from developing inside your car by leaving a window cracked open to let the humidity escape. Alternatively, leave a container filled with cat litter open somewhere inside the cab. 3. Stuck wheels. Try to wedge pieces of cardboard, wood or something else

that’ll provide friction beneath the wheels. Traction aids, sand, cat litter and gravel are other options. Gently press on the accelerator until your tires are free.

4. Frozen car door. Pour lukewarm water or windshield washer fluid over the door joint (don’t use hot water). Once your car door is open, make sure to wipe it thoroughly to remove all traces of the liquid. To prevent this issue from happening in the future, apply a protective product to the rubber seal. Alternatively, place a large plastic bag between the seal and the car’s frame before closing the door. 5. Unscheduled roadside stops. Stock your trunk with warm clothes and an emergency blanket in case you’re forced to stop on the side of the road, either to wait for help to arrive or for the weather to ease. If you’re in for a long wait, crack a window so air can circulate and turn the engine on every 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, make sure to keep an emergency kit in your trunk so you can deal with any other unfortunate winter surprises.
