Do’s and don’ts for choosing your

WEDDING GOWN

If the thought of finding the perfect wedding dress has you stressed, here are a few dos and don’ts that can help relieve the pressure and make the search a happy event.

do

don’t

Do start by finding the dress silhouette style that’s best for you. There are many details that can make for the perfect dress, but before you focus on those details, focus on your personal style. Select a dress silhouette that flatters your figure rather than whatever the dress trends are saying.

Don’t schedule dress appointments late in the day. You, as well as the staff at the bridal store, will be more energetic and positive earlier in the day. Your consultant will be able to give you her full attention and it’s likely that the store will not be as crowded.

don’t

Do bring your camera along if the store allows it. After trying on many dresses, a photographic record of how you look in them will give you a much better idea of the styles that suit you.

Don’t panic over the wedding dress sizing. The sizing of bridal gowns isn’t the same as average street wear. If you wear a size 4-6 in pants and tops, a wedding dress of comparable size will usually be an 8-10, and if you normally wear size 1416, the dress will likely be 18-20. Once you’re comfortable with that, pay attention to how the dress looks, not what the size label reads. It might be alarming at first, but you need to love how you look in the dress; size doesn’t matter.

do

Do try on as many dresses as necessary to select the right one. You may not think a dress looks good on a hangar, but dresses have an entirely different look when you wear it. Try on a variety to find the right one for you.

don’t

Don’t feel forced to try on too many dresses. It’s possible to become overwhelmed with too many choices and too many salons.

do

don’t

Don’t forget to pay attention to the top of your dress. Remember, no matter how beautiful the hem and lower part is, it’s the top of the dress that people will notice the most and that will show most often in your photos.

do

Do ask lots of questions when trying on dresses. Ask yourself if you love the way the dress makes you feel and whether it will work for your style of wedding and the activities that will be included. Make sure that you don’t feel self-conscious about any part of your body in the dress and make sure you can sit down comfortably in it.

I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021 5

The perfect dress

for your body type

One of the most important factors to consider when searching for the perfect wedding dress is what silhouette will best flatter your figure. While the consultants at a local bridal boutique can offer more personalized recommendations, here are a few basic tips for some common body shapes.

hourglass

Show off your natural curves with a sheath dress or a mermaid gown, and accentuate your chest with a sweetheart neckline.

pear shape

Choose an A-line or ballgown silhouette to accentuate your natural waistline, and balance the full skirt with a boat neckline or cap sleeves.

rectangle

inverted triangle

Balance your proportions by pairing a high neckline and long sleeves with a slit or asymmetrical skirt that emphasizes your legs.

round

Create a sexy silhouette with a bias cut or fit-and-flare dress in a lightweight fabric, and opt for a V-neckline and low back.

Opt for the flowing skirts of an empirewaist gown, and provide support for your chest with a boat neckline and an elegant off-the-shoulder look.

diamond

Keep in mind that these are just guidelines, and the important thing is that you feel comfortable and beautiful in the dress you choose.

Select a gown with a flared skirt and thin straps or a detailed bodice that will draw attention to your upper body.

Three tips for choosing the perfect

Wedding jewelry Are you wondering what kind of jewelry to wear on your wedding day? Here are three tips to help you match your accessories to your wedding attire. Be yourself. If you never wear jewelry in your day-to-day life, you shouldn’t be dripping in jewels on your wedding day. However, if you love the way you look in big chunky earrings or long necklaces, go for it. Match the metal to the dress. Pure white dresses look best with silver jewelry, while ivory or champagne fabrics pair well 6 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

with gold. If you’ve chosen to wear a blushhued gown, opt for rose gold. Consider the neckline. High-necked or halter dresses look best with statement earrings and a simple bracelet. A V-neck is practically begging for a beautiful necklace to fill the space. And a sweetheart or strapless gown goes with anything, from a choker to a pendant or even just the right earrings. On your wedding day, less is more. Your radiant face, your beautiful gown and your new wedding ring won’t need much embellishing.

wedding reception trends for 2021 What will your wedding reception look like? Will it be formal or casual, big or small? Here are some trends for 2021 that might spark an idea for you.

informal

With the world still dealing with the pandemic, informal weddings are the biggest trend for 2021. An informal wedding and reception allows the couple to have a much more intimate and meaningful celebration. It also gives the couple a way to spend a little more to pamper the guests they do have and add more personalized pieces as a part of their big day.

marry now, party later

Covid restrictions have created havoc for planning wedding receptions, so many couples are saying “I do” now, then having a future date to celebrate with a larger group.

eco wedding

Many couples are looking for ways to host responsible receptions by cutting back on unnecessary waste, using locally sourced produce, using paper straws rather than plastic and sharing wedding day flowers and decór with others.

lush greenery

Cascading greens of ferns, leaves and eucalyptus spread over tables or ceremony arches bring a sophisticated touch that matches any ceremony type.

mood lighting

Lighting can set the tone for for your wedding and the reception. Couples are using neon signage and lights that can be customized, making a great keepsake, as well as making use of vintage chandeliers.

Consider this when selecting

Wedding cake As one of the key components of most weddings, decisions about the cake shouldn’t be left until the last minute. Here are five factors to consider before you order yours.

sider what decorative elements you’d like to incorporate. Fresh flowers, edible gold leaves and chocolate lace are just some of the many choices.

THE NUMBER OF GUESTS. You want to make sure there’s plenty to go around. However, it would be a shame to waste your money on an excessively large cake and have to throw some out.

THE FLAVOR. From praline mousse to passion fruit, you might be surprised by how many options are available. Fortunately, most cake shops offer tastings to help you make your choice.

THE WEDDING THEME. The cake is as much a part of the decor as the flowers. Don’t hesitate to bring a copy of the invitation, color samples and pictures of the decorations to guide the baker.

THE INGREDIENTS. If you have a limited budget, determine if you favor high-quality ingredients over a refined look. You should also consider if any of your guests have allergies.

THE DESIGN. In addition to choosing the shape of the cake and the number of tiers, con8 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

Ideas for planning a The idea of getting married during the winter might sound rather bold, if not outright grim. But winter weddings actually have quite a few upsides. Think cozy fireplaces, mugs of hot cocoa and beautiful white snow, as well as some lower costs for planning for an off-peak wedding. Here are a few ideas to consider when you plan your big day.

winter color palette

You may think a winter wedding means using a red and green palette. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gorgeous dark emerald and plum colors, cream and berry tones, sophisticated silver and gold or classic black and white. There’s no limit to your selections.

cake

If you opt for traditional cake, think about a dark chocolate caramel cake or red velvet. Maybe use some flavors of the season such as white chocolate or peppermint.

signature cocktails

Hot-buttered rum and white Russians make the perfect winter cocktail for guests. Or think peppermint or cranberry-laced cocktails to celebrate the season. 10 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

Winter wedding apparel

Faux fur wraps, long sleeves, high necklines and dramatic capes are in fashion and can give you and your wedding party a warm, but stylish look. Add in some details reminiscent of a romantic winter wedding – twinkling lights, deep hues, snow dusted landscapes – by wearing sequined gowns in flattering fishtail silhouettes or simple sheaths for your celebration. The groom and groomsmen have unlimited choices for a winter wedding. Opt for warm sweaters or cardigans in place of suit jackets, or add in sweater vests and heavy wool jackets.

romantic decor

Add fairy lights to your reception and candles to light walkways outdoors. Don’t forget to light exterior trees. You can use candles, tea lights and lanterns both indoor and outdoor to give your wedding a romantic feel. Don’t forget to plan your wedding ceremony earlier in the day or you may run out of light before it’s over.

food

We all know how wonderful a warm winter meal can be. So why not plan for some comfort foods at your wedding?

Look at warm and creamy soups such as tomato, clam chowder or seafood bisque to start and complement your menu with winter produce such as sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes or squash. Desserts can be reminiscent of the season as well with warm apple pie, gingerbread, chocolate fondue or a hot cocoa bar, complete with miniature donuts for dipping.

wedding favors

You can keep winter in mind when selecting favors for your guests as well. If you opt for a hot cocoa bar, give guests their own customized mug as a gift. Pine-scented candles, mulling spices or candy canes are all good choices.

seasonal flowers

Winter can limit your selections for floral displays, but that doesn’t mean settling for less. Why not try some brunia berries – small silver balls that make the perfect accent in a winter bouquet, or hypericum berries – oval shaped red or green berries that are festive and colorful. Pinecones, roses, succulents and manzanita branches all give your wedding florals a unique touch.

Choosing the perfect

wedding shoes When it comes to accessories that complement your wedding dress, your shoes are arguably the most important. You want your footwear to both reflect your personal style and be comfortable enough to wear as you dance the night away. Choose your dress first. You’ll want to match the style of shoes to your dress. Make a statement. Shoes are a great way to add a pop of color to your wedding attire. Make sure they fit. The best time to shop for shoes is in the late afternoon. If they’re comfortable after

a day of work, they’ll fit perfectly on your wedding day. Don’t experiment with high heels. If you’re not used to wearing heels, don’t attempt to wear them at your wedding. There are many flat and wedge styles that make beautiful – and comfortable – bridal shoes. Bring them to your dress fitting. If your dress is long, it’ll need to be adjusted to the height of your shoes.

Break them in. Wear your shoes around the house to avoid any nasty surprises on the day of your wedding. If they’re tight or uncomfortable, bring them to a shoemaker to stretch them out a bit. Lastly, don’t forget to book a pedicure before your wedding. Nothing looks better in stunning shoes than prettily pampered feet.

There is no event more important than your wedding day. Trust our team to combine our culinary expertise with unmatched customer service to create a dining experience your guests won’t soon forget. Reasons to say While it can be a challenge to narrow down the guest list for such an important event, there’s something to be said for having a small wedding. Here are three reasons to consider opting for an intimate celebration.

save on expenses

If you have a limited budget, reducing the number of guests allows you to book a smaller, more affordable venue and lower the cost of food, drinks and

‘I do’ to a small wedding

decorations. Consequently, it may free up money for luxuries like a gourmet menu, designer shoes or a live band.

less stress

It’s generally easier (or at least less daunting) to plan a small wedding. You’ll have more venue options, the seating chart will be simple and decorating will be quicker. Plus, if you don’t like being in the spotlight, you’ll probably feel more comfortable in front of fewer people.

Ways to save on your

dream wedding

Traditional weddings can be costly. Here are some ways to save money while still having the wedding of your dreams.

Only serve beer and wine: or if cocktails are your thing, create a signature drink to offer your guests.

Limit your guest list: only request the presence of the people that matter to you. Avoid inviting distant relatives you never see.

Get a deal on the dress: buy your dress at a sample sale, or consider renting or buying a used one.

Find a beautiful location: art galleries and botanical gardens are venue options that won’t need extra decorations. Choose a restaurant: not only will the food be better, but you’ll also have all the tables, chairs and linens you need.

12 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

Minimize your florist bill: use candles as your centerpieces instead of flowers. Make your own wedding album: find a photographer that will give you all of the day’s pictures on a flash drive and use an online tool to create your own photo book.

more time

A small wedding means you’ll have fewer people to greet during the reception. Rather than circulate from table to table all evening, you’ll be able to spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy every moment to the fullest. Indeed, a small wedding has all the makings of a romantic and memorable day.

Things you can rent for your If you’re planning a wedding, there’s no need to buy everything you’ll need for the event. Here are 10 things to consider renting instead.

wedding

Tables and chairs. Even if your venue offers them, you may prefer to choose different ones that better suit your theme. Table linens and napkins. These come in a number of colors and styles and can be selected to complement your wedding esthetic. Lighting. Add lights to create the precise ambiance you’re looking for. Centerpieces. You’ll need to purchase the flowers, but many florists offer vases as rental items. Tents. If you’re hosting an outdoor wedding, it’s important to have a plan in place in case it rains. Lounge furniture. An area with comfortable chairs and couches is a great place to rest between dances. Dance floor. A space to cut the rug is a must at most weddings. If your venue doesn’t have one, rent it.

Entertainment. If you want to make sure your guests have fun, rent some large scale games or even a bouncy castle to keep them talking.

Photo backdrop. Whether you’re planning a photobooth or not, a beautiful backdrop is sure to be a hit with selfieloving guests.

Planning a

virtual bridal shower By Lori Mork

After the wedding shower for my niece Emma was cancelled for the second time because of the pandemic, those of us in charge of the shower decided to think outside the box. Emma is from Pennsylvania and those of us planning the shower are from the Midwest, which limited our options, but after discussing all the possibilities, we decided on a virtual shower using Zoom. After finding a date that worked for all parties, and again using Zoom, we held meetings to discuss the different ways we could celebrate. Our first order of business was to create invitations that we sent out by email as well as by sending physical copies through the mail. We included the information on Emma’s wedding registries and asked everyone to send their gifts and

cards to her home address. We also included an RSVP to get the names of those who would be joining us online in order to make sure that Zoom would be able to handle a group of our size. The RSVPs were also used to send small bottles of champagne to the guests to use during a toast to the bride. All guests were asked to email any photos of Emma from years past, and to come up with a memory of her that we could share when we gathered. We added a couple of games – “Would She Rather” and “Sweet Love Candy Match” – and sent them ahead of time to the guests who would be attending. For prizes, we used gift cards for companies that have a nationwide presence for prizes since our gathering would include people all across the US.

14 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

During the shower, we were able to play a photo slide show of photos of the bride, with all those attending displayed on smaller screens around the edge. To create a more festive atmospere for the bride and her family, who were all gathered together, our group delivered cake and cupcakes, then had someone in Pennsylvania supply champagne. Emma was able to open her gifts with all of her family watching, including many who would not have been able to attend an in-person shower, since we had guests from Texas, California, North Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin. It turned out to be a wonderful afternoon. Several guests created screenshots of the wedding and sent them out, which also allowed Emma to have a physical reminder of her shower.

aving spent most of their first summer of dating together at her parent’s home on Lake Victoria, bride Amber (Mohagen) Majeskie knew that the spot would be ideal for her wedding to fiance Cody Majeskie. “I didn’t think I wanted to have a wedding because I have never been very traditional,” said Amber. “We also did long distance our second year when Cody was living in Minneapolis and I was still in Fargo. We met most weekends in Alexandria so we could still see each other. It was the perfect venue for an intimate wedding and was beautiful with the lake in the background.” The couple, who were actually married June 10, 2018 at the courthouse, had a small ceremony on July 28 of that year after encouragement from her mother. “My mom talked me into doing a ceremony at their lake house,” Amber said. “It was really important to us to keep it small and that is how we ended up with 11 people total. “We also wanted the day to be stress free and focus on celebrating Cody and I starting our new life together.” Continue on page 18 BRIDE | Amber Mohagen Majeskie GROOM | Cody Majeskie WEDDING | June 10, 2018, county courthouse; July 28, 2018, Lake Victoria, MN The couple currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona where Amber is completing physical therapy school and Cody is working in cardiac rehabilitation. The two will move to St. George, Utah this year where Cody will begin medical school at Rocky Vista University. The couple have no children but do have two Pitbull mix dogs. I Do! Continue from page 17 Having just 11 people gather for their wedding, the Majeskies found that the small group is part of what made their wedding day so special. “I hope people know that you can still have a day that is just as, and maybe even more special with less people,” noted Amber. “I know there is financial strain and group size limitations for who knows how long (with Covid-19). However, you can still plan a wedding to be within those guidelines and have it be a perfect day.” The couple, who currently live in Phoenix, Arizona, met at a CrossFit gym in Fargo, North Dakota where Cody worked as a coach. “He had been away on his internship when I first joined,” Amber noted. “He came up after a few weeks to introduce himself and told me he was a coach. I remember thinking that was a line because I hadn’t seen him coach a class yet!” Cody and Amber began working out together and realized they had a lot in common: the desire to continue 18 I Do! their education as well as travel. “There was definitely an instant connection and we would text each other after we hung out each time and say how much fun we had,” she added. “After that happened five or six times, we knew there was something special there.” Amber, who was taking classes at North Dakota State University, realized just how special Cody was to her after class one day. “Cody knew I was almost done with class one day, so he drove across town to hide a Starbuck’s coffee by my car door as a surprise,” she said. “That thoughtful gesture was the moment I remember thinking that he may be the one!” The time the two spent together taught them just how much they had in common. Both are confident in who they are and what they want in life, and neither are afraid to speak their mind. “It was never a matter of if we would get married, just when it would happen,” said Amber. Putting a different flair on their reception, the couple bypassed the traditional first dance and instead played a version of the newlywed game, having each couple answer a series of questions about each other. “It was a lot of fun and a great way to learn about each other,” said Amber. “We spent most of the game laughing about each other’s answers.”

One bit of advice the couple received was to continue working on communication throughout their relationship and marriage. “This is never easy, but it is one of the most important pieces of advice that we have received,” Amber stressed. “Talking about the little and big decisions you have to make individually and as a couple so that you are making choices as a team. “Supporting each other when you don’t agree and learning to compromise when necessary – we have found this really important so our marriage continues to grow stronger throughout each celebration and hurdle life has thrown at us.”

How to perfect your

Wedding Day Makeup

All eyes are on the bride on her wedding day, and all cameras are too. Here are some makeup tips to ensure you look your best.

Be yourself

Your wedding isn’t the right time to try out a new look. Instead, strive for a slightly enhanced version of the makeup you normally wear. For some, this may be

dark eyeliner and a bold lip and for others, it may be a natural but radiant look.

Do a test run

Try out your wedding day makeup in advance. If you’re doing it yourself, run through applying it a few times. If you’re hiring a makeup artist, schedule an appointment a few weeks before the big day. Doing a test run will ensure you’re happy with the results.

Use the right products

Even if you’re not usually the emotional type, plan for tears on your wedding day. Opt for waterproof mascara, quality liquid foundation and lipstick that won’t smudge. Don’t forget to pack a kit that includes concealer, blotting papers and your lipstick for touch ups throughout the day.

How to achieve a classic, natural look If you’re going for a classic look, here are some tips on how to create a beautiful, but still natural look.

rosy hues

Hues from burgundy to soft pink, the rosy colors are perfect and complement every face. Try using a soft color on cheekbones, but add in classic ruby red lips.

dewy skin

Avoid matte foundation on your special day and instead opt for more luminous skin and an all-over glow.

bold eyebrows

Bold brows have been in style for a few years and still look good today. Striking shaped brows will give your face an unforgettable look. 22 I Do! Bridal Guide Winter 2021

bandeau hairpieces/ headbands

Accessorizing hair with bandeaus and headbands that glitter give the bride a Meghan Markle-inspired look. Not as strong a statement as a tiara, but still brings to mind a regal feel.

relaxed hair

Softly gathered hair or half-upsweeps with a few loosely hanging tendrils give brides a relaxed, no-care look. Intentionally messy hairstyles give you an effortless look.

waves/low bun

Big waves and curls will give you a more glamorous look for your wedding, while the low bun paired with a statement necklace will show off the neckline of your gown.

The benefits of using

local vendors Local vendors are a smart choice when planning your wedding ceremony and reception. Once you make the decision on where you will hold your wedding, you can begin to look at local vendors. Being familiar with the area, local vendors will be able to handle the tasks involved with the wedding without needing directions. Wedding photographers, for instance, will know the best places to stage photos, while other vendors most likely have preexisting relationships with representatives of venues, keeping your wedding day less stressful. Shopping local also ensures more personalized service, as well as more individualized attention, than you might find with larger retailers. Keeping your wedding local allows your vendors to meet with you more frequently to make sure that your wedding is the way you want it to be. It also makes dropping off deposits, attending meetings, and making fitting appointments easier.

Reasons to choose a There’s a lot to love about an autumn wedding – warm colors, cozy fall drinks, natural decor and crisp air. Here are some great fall wedding ideas.

fall colors

Beautiful autumn leaves are a great inspiration for a fall wedding. Think jewel-toned color palettes that include plums and burgundys, rusts and golds, with pastel and neutral accents. You can finish off your style with touches of metallics like copper and bronze.

wild bouquets

Bouquets filled with eucalyptus and dahlias is a wild and loose design that will give your wedding and reception an extra wow factor. If you love the rustic look, try using barrels that hold those bouquets.

Wedding event These days, a wedding makes use of so much more than just a basic invitation. Invitation suites, which include the invitation, reception card, response card, directions, accommodations card and weekend itinerary, have become very popular along with save the date cards. In addition, wedding event branding pieces, such as signage, menus and napkins,

who needs cake?

Perfect for a fall wedding, tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters or mini burger sliders and beer make great snacks.

Signature Sippers

for your winter wedding

If you’re planning a fall or winter wedding, you know the weather will be cold, so why not warm your guests by putting one of these winter signature cocktails on the menu. Hot or cold, these drinks will take advantage of seasonal ingredients.

Hot chocolate/ Coffee station

Set up a station for your guests to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate spiked with their choice of Baileys, whiskey, Amaretto, Frangelico, coconut rum, coffee liqueur, creme de menthe or any of the other wonderful flavors available. You could add in homemade flavored marshmallows for the hot chocolate as well as whipped cream for any of the drinks. For a unique combination, how about adding a little bourbon and Frangelico to your hot chocolate, then topping it with toasted, chopped hazelnuts and a crisp slice of bacon?

Cranberry Hot Toddy

Try changing up a traditional hot toddy by using cranberry juice and a honey flavored whiskey. Add a touch of honey to give it just the right touch.

Cranberry Champagne cocktail

Easy and festive, a cranberry champagne cocktail consists of the champagne or prosecco of your choice with a splash of cranberry juice. Add some sweetened lime juice, then top with a sprig of rosemary, cranberries or a lime slice.

Coconut Chai Toddy

Mixing dark rum with chai tea and coconut milk will give your guests a different hot cocktail that’s sure to please.

Apple Cider Sangria

Hot apple cider enhanced with white wine and mulling spices will warm your guests while giving them a taste of fall. You can add in brandy or pecan praline liqueur, or mix it up with cranberry juice and top with apple slices or cinnamon sticks.

Hot Old Fashioned

A classic, the Old Fashioned, takes a twist by using hot water. You can make it your own by using one of the newer flavored bourbon whiskeys, such as pecan or spiced.

Eggnog Martini

Stay with the flavors of the winter season with a combination of eggnog, brandy sugar and nutmeg. You can sprinkle it with a little pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon to add to the flavor.

Salted Caramel White Russian

A mixture of Irish cream, Amaretto and whole milk or cream, this drink gets a little extra zing from a couple of teaspoons of salted caramel sauce and a little sea salt.

Jack Frost Martini

A new take on a Blue Hawaiian, the Jack Frost martini is made with pineapple juice, blue curacao, light rum and cream of coconut whirled with ice in a blender and garnished with a slice of pineapple.

Cocoa Martini

Martinis are all the rage and this chilled version of hot chocolate will make all chocolate lovers happy. Just mix chilled hot chocolate with whipped cream-flavored vodka and caramel liqueur for a sweet sip. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

Will you get married in a

necktie

or a

bowtie?

You popped the question, got a yes, and now you’re planning every detail of your wedding day. Future husband – it’s time to think about what you’ll be wearing when you exchange your vows! The dilemma is quite real: will you choose a necktie or a bowtie to finish off your look? Here are some thoughts to help you make this important decision.

The bowtie: a classic. You can’t go wrong with the traditional bowtie. Match it with your tuxedo for a sophisticated look, or dare to be different with a velvet, knit or wooden bowtie that matches your wedding’s color scheme. Show stopping looks guaranteed in any case. The tie: a more relaxed option. Thinking of getting married in a suit and tie? Go for it! The good old necktie has become a popular option for the modern groom. From the distinguished traditional version to more avant-garde options, ties are available in endless patterns, colors and textures. You’re sure to find one that fits your personal style to a T. Have you decided yet? If you’re still on the fence, ask a stylist or knowledgeable salesperson for advice.

How to wear a

boutonniere Many grooms choose to follow the tradition of wearing a boutonniere on their wedding day. If you’re about to put a ring on your sweetheart’s finger, read on to find out how you should wear your boutonniere. First off, know that this accessory isn’t an essential part of the groom’s traditional attire and that many prefer to opt for the subtler handkerchief. If you do choose to say yes to one, here’s how to wear it: •Attach it to the lapel of your suit or jacket •Always pin it on your left side, above your heart

•Choose a delicate or magnetized fastener to avoid damaging your jacket •Make it match your bride’s bouquet (this is not optional!) •Match it to your wedding’s color palette WHO SHOULD WEAR IT? If the groom decides to wear a boutonniere, all male members of the wedding procession must follow suit. This means that the important men in the groom’s entourage – his father, godfather and groomsmen, for instance – should all sport the boutonniere with pride.

Non-floral

boutonnieres Traditionally at weddings, women wear corsages while the groom and other men sport floral boutonnieres. The people wearing them often include the groomsmen, the couple’s parents and grandparents and any other family members that the bride and groom want to honor. Here are some ways to put a fresh spin on the tradition.

•Herbs and fruit: berries and herbs look elegant while still being fresh and green. •Colorful buttons: you can make unique boutonnieres and corsages with an assortment of buttons. •Wooden tees: if the bride and groom are avid golfers, tie a few colorful tees together with a bow.

•Ornaments made of twigs: a shooting star, a heart or a simple wreath made of dried twigs would be eye-catching. •Feathers: they can be as colorful as flowers but are unexpected and whimsical.
