100 YEARS OF HISTORY Record numbers, talented field celebrate centennial Resorters Tournament

I

By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

t’s been 14 years now, but Alexandria native Bryce Hanstad can still remember the emotions he felt as the week got further and further along. Hanstad had to wait a year for a chance at redemption at the Resorters Golf Tournament. He fell in a 6-5 final to Ryan Smith of Victoria in the 2006 Men’s Division championship at the Alexandria Golf Club. In 2007, he returned as a 20-year old playing Division I golf at Colorado State and as one of the heavy favorites back on his home course. “I definitely had some better perspective going back in 2007 versus 06,” Hanstad recalled. “I had a year of college under my belt and some maturity at that point having played a year. I had gotten more used to the 36-hole days, so taking Saturday of the Resorters a little more in stride and pacing myself. Our college events were 36 holes the first day and then 18 the next day. I think that experience and then playing against some of the top players in the country at Colorado State in our events, a lot of that really helped me be a little more comfortable.” Hanstad certainly felt the pressure as an Alexandria native. He grew up playing at the Alexandria Golf Club and worked in the clubhouse from the time he was 16-years old through college. He would later go on to play professionally on the Gateway and Dakotas Tour. Winning a Resorters championship against the quality competition that frequents this tournament in now its 100th year is meaningful for any golfer no matter where they come from. But it’s especially true for players who grow up around this event. “You get to the point where you’re sick and tired of caddying and you want to play yourself,” Alexandria native and British Open champion Tom Lehman said when recalling

Winners of the 2020 Resorters Tournament were (back, left to right) Rick Vanyo, Senior; Betsy Aldrich, Women’s Executive; Tom Eidsvold, Grand Master; Nicholas Adams, Men’s Regular; Austin Vukovits, Men’s Championship; Dan Elton, Master; (front) Lunden Esterline, Junior 10-12; Troy Johnson, Men’s Executive; Hannah Boraas, Junior 13-15; and Ale Heinen, Women’s Division. All 10 are back in the 100th running of the Resorters Tournament this summer as they join a talented field across multiple divisions that includes a record-number of participants.

INSIDE: Vukovits looks to defend crown in loaded men’s field. PAGE 4 his 1980 Resorters Men’s Division championship in an interview with the Echo Press in 2014. “We all grew up thinking this was our U.S. Open. This was the biggest event of the year by far and to win the Resorters was every kid’s dream.” Hanstad can certainly relate. Tournament wins in his career included the 2007 Minnesota

Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Hazeltine. That came just a couple weeks prior to his run through the 2007 Resorters that was capped off with a 5-4 championship win over Danny Anderson of Willmar. A week of nervous energy gave way to relief and excitement as he hoisted the trophy near the AGC putting green.

“It’s a fast follow from my state amateur victory,” Hanstad said of where the Resorters victory ranks in his golf wins. “To have those both happen within a couple week span, that was just kind of a wild, fun ride to be on. With Resorters being over five, six days, to continue sleeping on who you know you’re playing the next day, there’s just an inherent buzz of being a local, so it carries a lot of significance for me.”

Indiana native Austin Vukovits did not know what to expect from the Resorters Tournament when he arrived in Alexandria on July 31, 2020 but he left more than a week later with nothing but good impressions. A lot of that has to do with the way he played at the Alexandria Golf Club all week. Vukovits, a junior on the Mississippi State University golf team this past spring season, won the Men’s Championship Division by a 1-up final over Josh Galvin, who was a senior at Maple Grove High School in the spring of 2021. “I’m super honored to be the champion, for sure,” Vukovits said after last year’s win. “Definitely a little surprised with never being here before and some of those unknown elements. But I just played solid golf after the qualifying. I got comfortable. It’s a long week. It really is, so I’m super beat right now.” Vukovits played two qualifying rounds and then won five match-play rounds on his way to the title. None of those were more draining than a 22-hole marathon against University of Nebraska golfer Tristan Nelko in the semifinals on Saturday morning. Nelko led that match by three with three holes to go. That’s when Vukovits stormed back with a par win and two birdies to force extra holes. He won it on the fourth playoff hole with a par. “When you’re out there for five, six hours and you know every hole could be your last, you have to put so much effort into every shot,” Vukovits said. “So much mental energy, but I was very happy with where I thought I got a good break by pulling through in the end. GRAND MASTER

Eidsvold claims back-to-back titles By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Tom Eidvold is now two-for-two in Grand Master Division titles since the field was introduced in 2019. Last year, he beat George Cliff to win his fourth Resorters championship. He also won back-to-back Masters Division titles in 2012 and 2013. Eidsvold started by winning four of the first five holes with pars before taking a five-hole lead to the back nine. He shot two-over par on the first nine holes in the final round. Cliff started to make a comeback while his back was against the wall. Trailing by six, Cliff won three straight holes before Eidsvold made par on No. 15 for the win. “A match is a match,” Eidsvold said. “We start on the first tee, and we obviously want to win. Whenever it ends, we are just as much friends as when we started. I consider George and every player in this division a great friend of mine. I love the time I get to share with these people during this week.”

Eidsvold was happy about the win but knew it couldn’t have come without the work that the Alexandria Golf Club put into the Resorters behind the scenes. “The people, staff and volunteers worked so hard to make sure that they got everything done in a safe way for us to play,” Eidsvold said of a 2020 tournament played during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This course was in great shape. It always is. From the groundskeepers to the clubhouse crew, everybody did a spectacular job. It’s just an awesome place to be.” The Grand Master Division is growing. In its first year, there were

TERRY MARTELL GARY OBELE, Becker, MN, Pebble Creek JERRY PETERSON CLAYTON PIKE, Billings, MT, Yellowstone GC KEN RIESBERG JACK SELTZ GENE SIPE RON WAY JOHN ZOUTENDEK

four competitors in a round-robin format. In 2020, the field doubled to eight. Eidsvold encourages more people his age to come out and play. “Even though this division was started (in 2019), we want to do everything we can to keep it going,” Eidsvold said. “It seems like more people are keeping in better shape and playing sports at a later age. That’s what makes it fun. Who knows, maybe we’ll have a 100-yearold division someday, and I’ll play in that.” Eidsvold and Cliff are both back in the 2021 Grand Master Division as they try to make another run through the tournament.

WOMEN’S DIVISION

Smarter decisions leads Heinen to her first title By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Ale Heinen of Wichita, Kansas has played the Resorters Tournament each of the last four years and has gotten to know many of the players who are regulars in the Women’s Division. Included in that is Osakis native Alayna Eldred. The two have become good friends over the years, and during last year’s finals they got to face off with a championship on the line. “It was really fun,” Heinen said. “Before we teed off, we both hugged each other and said, ‘Let’s just have a good time.’ That’s what we did. We had a great time.” Eldred was looking for her second Resorters championship after winning as a 14-yearold in the Women’s Division in 2014. She played right with Heinen through much of the day, but Heinen found her groove after backto-back wins on holes 7 and 8. She went on to win 3-2 to secure her first Resorters championship. “Probably in the middle of the round I started to get really comfortable with my game,” Heinen said. “It’s awesome. I call myself a retired golfer. I play on the weekends, but I love this tournament. It’s so fun playing in front of a ton of people. I like this golf course. I feel comfortable with this golf course, so this is amazing leaving with the win.” Heinen played at Wichita State University from 2013-2015 and finished her run there as the career stroke leader with a 77.175 average. She is now an assistant coach for the Shockers, so even when she is not playing herself, she is working on the game constantly. “I think one of my biggest advantages is I think I have a pretty good mental game,” Heinen said. “I don’t get as nervous under pressure, which is really good in match play tournaments. Coaching the girls and seeing what you’re supposed to do and not to do, it teaches me a lot. Even if I don’t play, just watching it I can learn through it.” Heinen seemed des-

Osakis native Alayna Eldred looks over her line during the 2020 Resorters Tournament. Eldred finished as the runner-up in the Women’s Division last year after winning the 2014 title. She is back again this summer trying to make another long run through the Resorters field. tined to win a title all week with the way she played. She shot a 7-over par 80 to finish tied as the fourth-lowest qualify-

ing round in the division. Eldred and Alexandria’s Cora Larson also shot 80, so Heinen took the sixth seed into

the match-play tournament and started to take off. Her opening win came by an 8-7 score. She then beat Alexandria’s Lauren Stockmoe 3-1 ahead of a 6-5 win over Morgan Kranz of Sauk Centre in the semifinals. After falling a little short in prior years, Heinen was on her game all week to secure her championship. “I played well. I did not hit my driver that much,” Heinen said. “That’s the thing here, you just have to stay in the fairways and you’ll be close to the greens even with a hybrid. I was just trying to play smart. Laying up on holes where I didn’t feel comfortable with my driver. Those were decisions that in previous years cost me. I think this year, that was the difference. I made smarter decisions.” Heinen is back in the 2021 Women’s Division field looking to defend her title.

Basten, Bro, Clayton honored during 100th Resorters By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Resorters matchplay golf tournament has a long history of players returning year after year for what many say is their favorite week of the summer. The competitive golf is part of that, but many friendships have formed through this tournament. Faces become familiar as people return for one week each summer, and the honorees for the 100th Resorters certainly fit the description as fixtures in this tournament’s history. John Basten is this year’s honorary chairman, while Betsy Bro and Ron Clayton are the honorary starters. Basten, who lives in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, helped run the Resorters Tournament as the head golf professional at the Alexandria Golf Club for 35 years. Bro and Clayton are longtime veteran players of the Resorters who have a combined 17 championships. Alexandria’s Gordy Anderson, who was the

Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida is an honorary starter for the 100th Resorters Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club that runs July 31 through Aug. 7, 2021. Clayton has nine Resorters titles to his name after winning two Senior Division championships and seven Masters Division titles. 98th Resorters honorary chairman in 2019, will also be honored again as a starter this year as he turns 100 years old ahead

of the tournament. The honorees will be recognized near the No. 1 tee box on Tuesday, Aug. 3 in a ceremony that starts at 11:30 a.m.

John Basten is this year’s honorary chairman of the 100th Resorters Golf Tournament. Basten’s history with the tournament runs deep after spending 35 years as the head golf professional at the Alexandria Golf Club before retiring to Arizona.

MENS MASTERS

Elton wins third Master title By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Moorhead’s Dan Elton is used to having to beat good golfers to win a Resorters championship, but his 2020 title might have been his toughest road yet in the Masters Division. After taking down top-seeded and multiple-Resorters champion Jon Empanger in the semifinal round, Elton beat third-seeded Tom Ryan 3-1 on Saturday to win his third Masters title. He also won in 2016 and 2017. “All week, I hit the driver pretty good,” Elton said. “I put myself in a good position consistently, and I didn’t take myself out of too many holes. I just played solid. In my first two matches, I played about like I qualified. Then against Jon

Empanger, I had my best day. I needed it because he’s a tough guy to beat.” Elton came into match play as the fourth seed in the tournament. In his match against Empanger, he birdied the final hole to advance. On the other side of the bracket was Elton’s friend Tom Ryan, the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Minnesota Golf Association. “Tom is a great competitor and a class act,” Elton said. “I’ve gotten to know him pretty well, and it’s always a pleasure to play with him. I think that’s what made today so much fun was getting to play with him.” Ryan birdied the first hole and made par on No. 2 to take an early two-hole lead. On No. 6, Elton made his first birdie of

the day. Even though Ryan also birdied the hole, that was the moment where Elton gained his confidence. “I didn’t win the hole, but I striped my third shot within gimme distance,” Elton said. “Tom did the same thing, but that was a real confidence-booster for me. I was able to settle in and get back to playing solid golf.” Not only did Elton pick up his game, he didn’t bogey a hole the rest of the match. After three bogeys in the first five holes, Elton finished the day shooting even par on the final 11 holes. His par putt on No. 17 clinched the championship. “I’m not a very emotional guy, so I’m not going to jump up and down when I win,” Elton

John, 80, has Alzheimer’s that will not allow him to travel to Alexandria for this year’s ceremony. “Golf to him was always, I don’t want to say it was the most important thing, but I really feel like for him, his identity came from being a golf pro in a lot of ways,” Bob said. “I just remember as a kid that even if it was winter he would often go off and do stuff at the golf shop. It was just kind of where he was happiest.” John worked as an assistant golf professional at the Oneida Golf and Country Club in Green Bay early in his career. “When he worked at the golf club in Green Bay, a lot of the (Packers) players and coaches were members, so he would have interaction at that time with guys like Bart Starr and Paul Hornung and the oldtime Packers,” Bob said. “He is a huge Packers fan.”

served as the golf pro at AGC would have their stressful moments. If they did, Bob Basten does not have that as a memory that stands out. John and his wife, Barb, had two sons, Bob and Ken. The kids grew up in Alexandria, and like their dad, spent almost every minute of Resorters week out at the course. There was work to be done. For Bob and Ken, there was playing golf, but there was a lot of catching up to do as well. “One of the coolest memories for me as a kid from the Resorters was the influx of people that you saw once a year for a week and got to hang out with,” Bob said. “I think some of that was the same for my dad — relationships with people who were in once a year for the Resorters. He saw them for 30 years or more. That’s probably what I miss most about not being back there is the energy and the influx in the summer of people. I think he kind of thrived on that.”

Johnson proves unbeatable again Maple Grove golfer wins third straight Executive title By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Maple Grove’s Troy Johnson came into the 99th Resorters Golf Tournament last year not feeling like a favorite in the Men’s Executive Division after not playing many competitive rounds. Johnson injured his back in late March of 2020 and wasn’t feeling 100% from that until almost late June after treatment. Then in mid-June, he tested positive for COVID-19 and suffered through a whole spectrum of symptoms. Johnson had been fully recovered from that bout with the virus for a while before the tournament, but he knew having not played much could hinder him against a talented field in Alexandria. As it turned out, Johnson’s game got better

and better as the week went on. He was steady again on the final day as he beat Andy Petersen 2-up in the semifinals before a 1-up win over Geoff Klein secured his third straight title. “It’s great, especially this year when I haven’t played that much,” Johnson said. “I really wasn’t coming in here with much confidence, but as the week went on and playing more, I felt a little more comfortable. I started hitting some really nice shots. Today, I think I was 5-under par. That’s a tough match to win 1-up. Normally it goes a little quicker than that.” Johnson said he knew nothing would come easy against Klein. Klein was great himself all week as he rolled through two 5-4 wins and a 4-3 victory before edging four-time Executive champion Daryl Schomer by a 2-1 final in the semifinals. Johnson led by two at the turn with birdie wins on Nos. 5 and 9. That’s about where things stood until a rare

bogey on 16 allowed Klein to pull within one with a par. Both players parred the par-three 17th, setting up a must-win situation for Klein on 18 to extend the match. Klein did everything right to give himself a chance. He hit a good tee shot that gave him a look at getting up and down for birdie. But Johnson knows how to put matches away. He stuck his approach shot to within a foot from 65 yards out. Klein hit his approach close too, but he conceded the match once he saw there was no way Johnson could lose the hole. “It was great, but obviously I didn’t expect to hit it within a foot,” Johnson said. “We talked about just getting it within 15 feet and making Geoff make birdie to move on. It just came off really nice, and I hit it close.” The two finalists in the Executive Division play in the same group as the two finalists in the Men’s Championship field on Saturday

afternoon. Both Klein and Johnson showed they could play right with anyone in the Resorters Tournament, regardless of the division. Johnson always has a work conflict that keeps him from being able to play in the two days of qualifying that is required of the Championship Division. That’s why winning in the Executive field is so important for him because it guarantees him the opportunity to come back as the automatic entry into the field as the defending champion. “It’s nice to get that automatic seed because I can’t do the Sunday or the Monday (qualifying) really,” he said. “It’s nice to win so I can play Wednesday. Normally, I come back Tuesday and I can play Wednesday afternoon then.” So far, so good for Johnson on that front. He guaranteed himself a spot back in the 2021 tournament with another steady week of golf in Alexandria.

JUNIOR 10-12

Esterline’s steady play wins 10-12 Division Champ moves up to Junior 13-15 Division By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Lunden Esterline of Wichita, Kansas lived up to expectations as the top seed in the Junior 10-12 Division at the 2020 Resorters Tournament. Esterline qualified with a 39 on Aug. 2 of last year, and then went out and won backto-back 4-3 matches ahead of a 1-up win in 11 holes in the semifinals. Then in the finals, he secured his first Resorters championship with a 2-up win over Will Hacker. Esterline was called up to accept his championship tro-

phy during an awards ceremony after the final round and was asked if he wanted to talk. He gave a smile and a shake of his head “no,” but his game did much of the talking throughout the week in this division. Junior 10-12 players have to get out to a fast start in match play with their rounds only going nine holes. Esterline did that with a par win on hole 11 after starting on the back nine in the title match against Hacker. Hacker got that hole back with a par win of his own on hole 12, but that would be Esterline’s only bogey of the match. He was steady with pars from then on out, and it got him the lead back with wins at 15 and 17 to secure the championship. Esterline has made the jump up to the Junior 13-15 Division for the 2021 tournament.

HONORED From Page 8

An opportunity to work as a head pro at the Alexandria Golf Club was enough to make him leave Green Bay as he became a fixture at the club in Alexandria. After moving to Phoenix upon retirement from AGC, he taught lessons for 17 years. Golf and the Resorters were a big part of John’s life. That made him a natural fit for the honor of being this year’s honorary chairman. “I think he’d be proud,” Bob said. “I think he’d probably be a little bit humbled by it... Knowing him he’d probably laugh about it or joke about it, but it would be the kind of thing that would be really special to him.”

A dominant decade

Betsy Bro was the player to beat in the Resorters Women’s Division for nearly a decade. She won eight championships from 1968 through 1979, including four straight from 19741977. She also had runner-up finishes in 1973,

ELTON From Page 8

said. “But it’s a heck of a feeling when it finally happens. You played

1978 and 1983. Bro looks back on her time in Alexandria with incredible Bro memories that stem from a lot of different emotions. The competition was great, she said. Players like Peggy Kirsch, a Duluth golfer who went on to play in nine Women’s U.S. Open Championships, competed in Alexandria. Bro beat Kirsch in a 7-5 match to win her 1979 Resorters title. “Every tournament that you have good players, when you win it’s a real victory,” Bro said. “You don’t necessarily say this tournament was better. I played the U.S. National Seniors and went to the semifinals in extra holes and lost because of a technicality. That was the best amateur competition for your age in the world. I worked just as hard in that tournament as I worked in those Alex tournaments and you were just as nervous. You win and you lose, so every victory you savor because you lose

so much more often than you win.” Bro, who grew up in Minnesota before moving to Iowa in 1981 ahead of spending the last 26 years full time in Arizona, first came to the Resorters because of her dad, Neil Croonquist. Croonquist won the Resorters Men’s Division four times and is a member of the Minnesota Golf Association’s Hall of Fame. Bro, who has won nine amateur state championships in three different states, followed right in her father’s footsteps in terms of her competitiveness. That competition at the Resorters drew Bro to Alexandria for the Resorters, but it was only part of it. Her family rented a big cabin on Lake Darling during the week. They would fish, swim, and simply have one of the best weeks of their summer with friends and family. Alexandria native Jim Lehman served as her caddy as a young kid. Then there’s tales from the calcutta and other events on and off the course that still make her laugh as she recalls them.

against these guys all week, and you’re all competing for one prize. (Saturday) and (Friday), I felt the nerves before my matches because I want to win. It’s just a

great feeling.” Elton’s comeback victory followed another comeback he had against Empanger in the semifinals. With only seven holes to play, Empanger

Clayton was 50 years old the very first time he played in the Resorters, and it took a little encouragement from a good friend to get him

here. Clayton has lived in Florida for 53 years after being a four-year letterman on the Mankato State University golf team during his college years. He spent a lot of time in Minnesota during the summers, and a high school friend of his had consistently asked him to come to Alexandria to play in the Resorters field. “I’m so glad I finally did,” Clayton said. “I’m very competitive, so just the whole tournament (was a draw). Plus, it’s really fun. My wife and I made a lot of great friendships and acquaintances there. We really looked forward to it as the highlight of our summer.” Clayton became a fixture in the field. He won his first of nine Resorters championships in 1994 when he took the Senior Division. Clayton added another championship in the Senior field in 2000 before winning seven Masters Division titles that ranged from 2004 to 2015. Clayton won six straight Masters titles from 2004-2009. “As I got older, I became a better player,”

he said of that success. “Particularly in my age groups. I first became a scratch player at age 41.” The Resorters Tournament became a big part of Clayton’s life each summer, and he said he was humbled to be named an honorary starter during the centennial celebration. Clayton, 82, still plays a couple times a week near his home in Sarasota, but said his days of competing in a week-long tournament are behind him. Clayton and his wife, Kathy, sold their place in Minnesota two years ago and had no intentions of coming north again. That changed with this honor as the couple makes the trip to the Alexandria Golf Club where they will stay with Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold — a good friend and fellow Resorters champion. “We always looked at it as a reunion besides the competitive golf,” Clayton said. “All the wonderful people that we met there, the friendships we acquired. There is something very special there, and it’s something we enjoyed for many years.”

had a three-hole lead. Elton’s two late birdies punched his ticket to the championship. “It was kind of the theme for me all weekend,” Elton said. “I feel

like I was down in almost every match. Sometimes it took me a little longer to find my swing. That’s just the way this tournament goes. I feel very fortunate to win this

division with so many great golfers.” Elton will have a chance to do it again as he returns to AGC in the Masters Division for the 2021 tournament.

“Just story after story,” Bro said. “The whole thing is just a memory of wonderfulness and just good feelings. I wish I had something more profound to say, but it was a terrific time in everyone’s life.” Bro, 75, plays golf four times a week. The sport is her passion. A prior commitment is keeping her from being in Alexandria during Resorters week this year, but she was thrilled to be thought of as an important piece of the history for a tournament that meant so much to her. “I was just flooded with memories of good times and family,” Bro said. “The lakes, the competition. I live in a desert now, and it’s a totally different feeling, and there is nothing like memories. I was thrilled and very touched by the honor because I loved competing up there, and it was really good competition.”

Nicholas Adams goes 20 holes to win Men’s Regular title

Nicholas Adams accepts his trophy at the awards ceremony after winning the Men’s Regular Division first flight at the 99th Resorters Tournament in 2020.

By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Maple Grove native Nicholas Adams had to survive some close matches throughout his week in the Men’s Regular first flight at the Resorters last year, and that was especially true in the title match. Adams qualified as the seventh seed in the 16-player flight, but he found his groove in match play. He won 5-3 in his opener ahead of a 19-hole battle with Joshua Bell in round two. On Satur-

Eric Morken / Echo Press

day morning after a 4-3 win in the semifinals to get him to the division’s championship, Adams had to survive another long battle, this time in 20 holes to earn the title. Adams matched up with Alexandria’s Brandon Bistodeau in the championship. Bistodeau, the fifth seed, won 4-3, 3-2 and 2-1 matches to get to the finals. He almost wrapped up a memorable week with a title, but Adams escaped on Saturday with a 1-up win in 20 holes. Adams built an early lead

in the championship when he birdied Nos. 6 and 9 to go into the turn 2-up. It was a threehole advantage after his par win at 10, but Bistodeau rallied from there, winning each of the next three holes with two pars and a birdie. It was close the rest of the way, but Adams got the job done on the second playoff hole to win his first Resorters championship. Adams is back in the field again this year as he tries to repeat as the division champion.

SENIOR

Vanyo notches Senior title with sons by his side By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press When the qualifying rounds finished at the 2020 Resorters Tournament, Rick Vanyo made the cut by only four strokes. As the 25th-seeded player in the Senior Division, he pulled off several upsets on his way to winning his first Resorters title. And he did it all with the help of his two sons by his side. Vanyo had made one semifinal before Saturday four years ago but wasn’t able to get the job done. Last year, he learned from his experience to beat the 31st-seeded Pete Passolt. “When I lost to Steve Herzog four years ago, I felt how grueling that match was,” Vanyo said. “The difference between then and now was that Herzog has a lot of hometown followers. It was much more relaxed out there today. I was more stressed out then than I was today.” Every match Vanyo played in was decided by a 1-up score until the championship. In the final match, he beat Passolt 5-4 to win the Senior title. “After Monday’s round, I knew that I was hitting the ball well,” Vanyo said. “It was just a matter of hitting the ball in the right places on the course to get to the pins. I did that all week in several close matches. I shot an 83 in my opening round, which wasn’t good, but I knew that I was close. It was just a matter of hitting my spots.” Vanyo shot even-par on the front nine in the finals, including a birdie on No. 4 to take a two-hole lead. Passolt didn’t have his best round of the week as he fell down four holes before the back nine. “Pete didn’t have it today,” Vanyo said. “He couldn’t get his putts the way he was all week. He was so good leading up to today, but he never found it today.” A par on No. 13 was Vanyo’s fifth win of the day and helped him clinch the match. While a Resorters win is

Vanyo won his first Resorters championship by beating Passolt 5-4. unique for every competitor, it meant a little more to Vanyo last year. From the qualifying rounds to the semifinals, Vanyo had his youngest son caddy for him. “My youngest son was an awesome caddy for me,” Vanyo said. “He did an excellent job of knowing what I needed to do. He

couldn’t be here (in the finals), so my oldest son came and helped out. They were so tremendous for me.” Vanyo took a deep breath, looked at his trophy and started to get emotional. He thought about how the Resorters means more than winning and losing, but instead, the time spent with family.

“I grew up teaching these guys how to play golf, and I loved every second of it,” Vanyo said. “Now, they’re the ones out here helping me. It’s just special.” Vanyo will try to repeat another memorable week as he returns in 2021 to the Senior Division looking to defend his title.

18 An Echo Press Publication | Saturday, July 31, 2021 WOMEN’S EXECUTIVE

A sixth title for Aldrich By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Minneapolis’ Betsy Aldrich is no stranger to winning at the Alexandria Golf Club. In 2020, she picked up her sixth Resorters championship with a 4-3 win over Alexandria’s Nancy Syverson. Aldrich’s Women’s Executive championship is her third in four years. In those four years, she’s noticed how much stronger the field has become. “I think more and more women want to play in this division,” Aldrich said. “(In 2021), it’s going to be hard for some people to get a spot. I think over the last few years, there have been some really good players who have come through and have elevated this division.” Syverson gave the perennial power a challenge. She started the match with a birdie on the first hole before Aldrich made par on No. 2. Syverson regained the one-hole lead with a par on No. 4, only to see Aldrich tie the match again on No. 5. Aldrich took her first lead of the afternoon with a birdie on hole eight. “Nancy and I have been coming out here for a long time, and we had a fun backand-forth going there,” Aldrich said. Aldrich extended her lead on No. 10 with a par before winning the final two holes to clinch the win. Her par on hole 15 clinched her fourth Women’s Executive championship. Over the last five Women’s Executive championship matches, Aldrich has been in every one of them. Her first came in 2007 before the division went away for nine

years. When it came back, she was still on top in 2017. “I’ve been playing in this tournament for about 35 years,” Aldrich said. “This week isn’t about winning and losing. This is a vacation week for my family and a lot of other families. Winning is just a bonus. As long as they keep having this tournament, I’ll keep coming back.” While Aldrich dominated nearly every match she played in, there was a point where she almost dropped out of the tournament. After an accident early in the week off the course, she woke up with extreme back pain and contemplated giving up her spot. “When I tell you I couldn’t move, I’m serious,” Aldrich said. “Even when it started to get better, I couldn’t tie my shoes it hurt so bad. Thank God for (Alexandria chiropractor) Larry Novotny for being able to get me ready to play. My back was really tense earlier in the week. I laid up a lot of shots, but I was scoring better than I had been. I think I learned how to play smarter golf.” After a victory and overcoming a nagging injury, Aldrich was happy to make the trip up to Alexandria. “Golf is one of the only sports that we can stay distanced in with all of this Coronavirus stuff,” Aldrich said. “For the most part, I think people did a really good job of following the rules and staying safe this week. We had other opportunities to go other places, but we will always choose Resorters over everything else.” Aldrich is back in the field again this year as she tries to win another Resorters title.

HISTORY From Page 1

Record numbers after a century of significance

For 100 years, players have woken up late in the week at this tournament and felt those nerves. Alexandria’s Jerry Rose has three Men’s Division championships at the Resorters from 1979, 1983 and 2000. Rose is again a part of that Men’s Championship field this year while he also helps run the tournament. Rose said their research showed that the Resorters is the second-longest running amateur match-play event in the country. The North & South Championship, with a 121-year history played at Pinehurst in North Carolina, is the longest continuous-running match play event. This year’s Resorters field will see record numbers with more than 480 golfers on the entry list as of late July. By comparison, 372 golfers were in last year’s field. The Alexandria Golf Club is planning to accommodate 448 entries, which meant they needed someone to step up after they were flooded with more than 500 golfers wanting to take part when registration opened. Grant Hanson, Director of Golf at the Geneva Golf Club in Alexandria, heard about the overwhelming response. He got on the phone and offered to help. Geneva will host Centennial Flights for this year’s tournament. Those who make the final day of those flights will play at AGC on Aug. 7. “Grant and (Geneva head golf pro) Jon (Crouse) and the team over there were just terrific in regards to working with us,” Rose said. “Our goal has been to make this a great

Alexandria native Bryce Hanstad watches his tee shot during the 2007 Resorters Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club. Hanstad won that 2007 championship after falling in the finals a year prior, calling that Resorters Men’s Division championship one of the biggest wins of his golf career after growing up around the deep history of the Resorters. event for the community and not just the Alexandria Golf Club. It’s the cornerstone event for our club and a huge part of our financial success each year, but we all recognized how important it is for the community and the amount of tourism it brings in.” The Resorters organizing committee has worked in recent years to make the tournament more enjoyable for fans and players alike. Strict pace-of-play policies implemented about five years ago eliminated some of the six-hour rounds that had bogged down play. Rose said his goal has been to make the 100th Resorters feel like a PGA tournament through events during the week and signage and markers on the course. The Centennial Celebration Pro-Am will kick off the tournament on Saturday, July 31 with a 2 p.m. shotgun start. There will be a pastchampions dinner and

other meals throughout the week that will utilize local restaurants. “We have sponsors this year in the pro-am that Tom Lehman is going to play in and play with the sponsors,” Rose said. “I think Tom is going to put on a clinic just prior to the proam out on the driving range. One of the big things we’re trying to do is get the community more involved to try to generate some excitement and opportunities for our local restaurants and businesses.” Matt Gogel will join Lehman in playing in the pro-am and conducting that clinic. Gogel has played eight events on the PGA’s Champions Tour during the 2020-21 season and recently shot rounds of 68, 72, 69 and 70 to finish tied for 18th at the Senior British Open Championship. Lehman, who has played in 22 events with three top-10 finishes on the Champions Tour this season, tied for 11th at

that same tournament with a 277 after rounds of 68, 71, 68 and 70.

A talented field

The field of golfers this year includes all of the 2020 division winners back at AGC in Rick Vanyo, Seniors; Betsy Aldrich, Women’s Executive; Tom Eidsvold, Grand Masters; Nicholas

Adams, Men’s Regular; Austin Vukovits, Men’s Championship; Dan Elton, Masters; Lunden Esterline, Junior 10-12; Troy Johnson, Men’s Executive; Hannah Boraas, Junior 13-15; and Ale Heinen, Women’s Division. Both Esterline, now Junior 13-15, and Boraas, Women’s Division, have

moved up age levels after winning the junior fields a year ago. Donald Constable (2010), Jacques Wilson (2014), and Brian Choe (2018) join Vukovits and Rose as former men’s champions in the 2021 field. Last year’s runner-up, Josh Galvin (Maple Grove senior in 2021), joins recent contenders like Lincoln Johnson (University of Minnesota, 2016 runner-up), Nate Adams (North Dakota State University, 2018 runner-up) and Will Harris (2009 runnerup) as guys looking to win their first Men’s Division championship. “It’s really exciting and very cool they’ve been able to keep it going and continue to draw top participants,” Hanstad said. “We have people all over the country who come to this. It’s fun to see that it continues to be on an upswing after even 100 years.” Hanstad remembers well what these players will feel as they get later in the week when the wins pile up. Those who make it to Saturday’s championships in their division will certainly earn it this year with record numbers and talented golfers in every division.

Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas chips a short shot onto the green during her 6-5 win in the Junior 13-15 Division championship match against Cottonwood’s Carson Boe during the 2020 Resorters Tournament.

Boraas adds to her successful 2020 summer Division champ makes jump up to Women’s field this year By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas wasn’t herself through her qualifying round in the Junior 13-15 Division last year when she shot an 87 to kick off the Resorters Golf Tournament. The way she played in match play is more indicative of what she can do at the Alexandria Golf Club. Boraas was the 12th seed in a 16-player field made up of mostly boys. She rolled through four of them on her way to winning her first Resorters championship. “My game just came

together today,” Boraas said after beating Cottonwood’s Carson Boe 6-5 in last year’s finals. “It was really nice. It wasn’t the most solid round, but it was enough to keep me going. I had some nerves, but I think that’s normal. I took those nerves and brought it.” Boe was a good story all week as a 13-yearold who won big matches to get himself to the championship. He stormed back from a four-hole deficit in the semifinals against Charlie Hanson to win 1-up, but Boraas was too much in the title match. Boraas knows AGC extremely well, and she used that to her advantage in the finals. “It helped a lot. I knew the speed of the

greens pretty well,” she said. “I knew where I wanted to hit the ball. It was nice to have a little leg up on him with that.” A birdie win on No. 2 got Boraas going, and she rattled off four more wins on the front to take control in the match. “It’s a huge confidence booster,” Boraas said. “It helps me know that I can do it.” All of last summer was a testament to how well Boraas can play. She performed well in tournaments all throughout the state. This 2021 spring high school season, she helped lead the Alexandria girls golf team to the Class AAA state championship. “The summer was awesome, considering the circumstanc-

es of COVID,” she said last year. “It was really awesome to be able to still play in tournaments. Trying to just get my name out there and just getting the experience of playing in all these tournaments is really awesome. My dad always wants to put me in harder tournaments just so I can struggle and learn from struggling and grinding back.” Boraas showed her ability to bounce back after her qualifying round on Aug. 2, 2020 to start the Resorters. The win six days later was just another positive step for her as she now turns her attention to making the jump up a division and playing in the Women’s Championship field during the 2021 Resorters.

Vukovits bounced right back. He birdied 11 to tie it, and then used another birdie on the par-five 12th to take the lead. “Ten was just kind of a fluky thing where you hit a bad shot. It happens, and playing 11 was a big momentum shift,” Vukovits said. “Josh hit it right next to the green, so technically he would have had the advantage. But what I did was just match play at it’s finest. You hit it close and put pressure on your opponent to hit a good shot, and he hit one that rolled out a little bit.” Vukovits expects to birdie 12 as a par five, and he said a 10-footer he sank on the parthree 13th to save par and halve the hole felt like a turning point. He came right back and won hole 14 to take a 2-up advantage. “Once I hit that (par putt), I thought I’m in a good spot,” he said. “I can start making free swings, don’t have to push. I can feel confident with where I’m at.” Galvin got the match

with an iron off the 18th tee box on the 340-yard par four. He ended up just barely in the right

rough, but with a great look at the green. He put his approach shot in the middle of the

green, and Galvin overshot the green on his approach. That never gave him a good look at birdie. “I know my tendencies under pressure,” Vukovits said. “I was feeling a lot of pressure there for sure, and I knew that a 2 iron would be the best club for me (off the No. 18 tee box). It just takes some of the risk out of play. It gave me a really good look at the green, and I was able to hit a good shot.” Vukovits qualified as the 28th seed in the 32-player championship flight, but he found a way to make big shots all week in match play. His wins came by scores of 3-2, 1-up and a dominant 6-4 final in the quarterfinals before winning two pressure packed matches on Saturday. It made the 12-hour drive back home that much more enjoyable with a trophy. After a memorable week at his first-ever Resorters Tournament, he’s excited to come back in 2021 to try to defend his title. “The plan is to bring some of my friends up,” Vukovits said. “We’re going to make a good trip out of it because I enjoyed it so much.”
