Resorters intrigue builds off success of 2021 By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press
T
he intrigue of playing in the week-long match play Resorters Golf Tournament in Alexandria has grown in terms of entries in recent years, and the success of the 100th celebration of the tournament in 2021 seems to have continued that momentum. The tournament had such a big response a year ago that the host site, the Alexandria Golf Club, teamed up with the Geneva Golf Club in town to field additional flights. This year, tournament chairman Jerry Rose said the club had more than 600 entries the first day registration opened. The Alexandria Golf Club can accommodate 448 players in the tournament. Additional flights in some divisions will also be playing at Geneva again this year. “It’s going to be every bit as big as last year and actually a few more players over at Geneva it looks like,” Rose said. “We did a lot of things last year to try to make it a better event. We spent quite a bit more money on what I would call infrastructure stuff. Signage, decorations, a variety of things just to make it look more like a real tournament…I think the 100th really helped a lot

Sladek shines during 100th Resorters Alex 16-year-old believed to be the youngest Men’s Champ ever By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press The Resorters Golf Tournament reached a significant milestone last year as the Alexandria Golf Club celebrated the 100th playing of this week-long match play event, so it was only fitting that history was made to cap off that celebration on the final day. Alexandria Golf Club president Jerry Rose was confident during the awards ceremony that there has never been a younger Men’s Division champion than Alexandria’s Braeden Sladek. He was 16 years old last summer, but one would be hard pressed to know that in watching his demeanor on the course. Sladek rarely shows much emotion during his rounds — after good or bad shots — despite plenty of pressure moments during the tournament. “I think a lot of it comes from my experience playing bigger tournaments all over the country,” Sladek said. “I just try to take it one shot at a time. If you hit a bad shot, it’s over with. Focus on the next one, stay calm, patient. Make birdies when they come to you. Focus on making pars and avoid the big mistakes.” Those miscues were few and far between for Sladek all week. After a 5-3 win in his matchplay opener, he rolled off three straight 2-1 victories, including a semifinal win over a recent 7-year pro and 2010 Resorters champion in Minnetonka’s Donald Constable. Sladek faced former University of Nebraska-Omaha golfer Kelly Brown in the championship. Brown, in his first time playing the Resorters, beat Nate Adams of North Dakota State University in a 2-1 match in the semifinals. He gave Sladek everything he had. In the end, back-toback wins on 17 and 18 allowed Sladek to cel-

Brown settled for the gimme birdie win. Then at 12, he sank a putt of more than 20 feet for eagle that negated a birdie for Sladek and tied the match. “I knew for sure right away it was going to be ebrate a championship Executive Division finala good battle all day,” with friends and family ists Troy Johnson and Sladek said. “We weren’t all around the 18th green Daryl Schomer, went going to be giving each back and forth. after a 2-up victory. other 2, 3-footers. and trickled the ball over the front lip of the cup. “I was sitting good. I lagged it up to about three feet,” Sladek said. “I saw him leave it 10, 15 feet short. He steps up and drains it, and then it’s like, ‘Well, the pressure is on me now. I’ve got this three foot, downhill putt to tie the hole.’” Sladek said he enjoys those pressure moments. He showed it over the final two holes. Both guys had near 5-foot putts for par on the par-3 17th. Sladek drained his. Brown sent his just wide. It was a lost hole Brown couldn’t afford as Sladek grabbed the 1-up advantage. On 18, Sladek originally had his driver out before putting it back in the bag. “I thought, ‘I’m one up here,’” he said. “‘Put it in the fairway, give myself a little flippy wedge in and put the pressure on him to make
birdie. Put it in the fairway was the biggest thing.” That’s exactly what he did as Sladek found himself with a clear look at the green. He stuck his approach shot to within 15 feet. Brown’s second shot went just deep of the green. He missed a par putt that would have been his only chance for a playoff as he conceded the hole and shook hands with Sladek. The win over Brown was memorable, but he wouldn’t have been there if not for what might have been his biggest win all week earlier in the day. Constable, who played for both the University of Texas and the University of Minnesota almost a decade ago before turning pro, looked like the favorite after shooting an 11-under par 133 (67, 66) through two rounds of qualifying. Sladek got a birdie win at No. 5 to go 2-up against Constable. It was back to even after 11, but a birdie win on 12 and a par win at 13 gave him a lead he never relinquished. “After qualifying with the numbers he put up, they were very solid,” Sladek said of Constable. “I felt like the pressure was off. He was the favorite to win, but I just stayed patient in that round. Let him make mistakes, and I just tried to make par and make birdies when they came to me.” The Men’s Division last year had many current, past and future high-level college players. Sladek certainly fits the description of one of those future college golfers after committing to the University of Kansas on March 14, 2022. Sladek and Brown are both back in the Men’s Championship Division this summer at the Resorters, trying to win a title against more than 80 other talented players in the division. Aldrich wins third straight Women’s Executive title U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur will keep Aldrich from this year’s Resorters
By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Minneapolis’ Betsy Aldrich was chatting with friends around the No. 16 green when the cork of a champagne bottle rolled across her foot. Her opponent, Molly Baker, got a head start on the celebration. Aldrich brought home her seventh Resorters trophy during the 2021 Resorters Tournament, including her fifth in the Women’s Executive Division. She beat Baker 4-2 to win her third straight title. “Oh, the centennial was great this year,” Aldrich said right after that match was over. “It’s really exciting, and it’s even more fun that my significant other, Tom (Ryan), is up a couple of holes in his (Masters Championship) match out here too.” Ryan ended up winning his match too to secure his first championship at the Resorters. She hopped in a cart with Baker in the passenger seat. Despite battling for nearly four hours for who would become champion, Aldrich and Baker showed that in the end, good people and good times matter most to players in this field. “That’s what this is all about,” Aldrich said. “This is about the families and the people. Winning is fun, and it is competitive, but it’s left out there. I look forward to the people more than anything else.” There will be a new champion in the 2022 Women’s Executive Division with Aldrich not playing in this year’s Resorters Tournament. She has a good reason. Aldrich qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and will be playing in Alaska during the same week as the Resorters.

Eldred back in the winner’s circle By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Osakis’ Alayna Eldred waited seven years to repeat what she did in 2014 at the Resorters golf tournament when she was 14-years-old. On Saturday of the 2021 Resorters at the Alexandria Golf Club, Eldred became a two-time Women’s Division winner with a 5-4 victory over Detroit Lakes’ Madison Herzog. While it wasn’t her first time winning this tournament, it was her most memorable. “Words cannot describe this feeling right now,” Eldred said after last year’s win. “I’ve been chasing this since I won in 2014. To be here again is just incredible.” Eldred, who plays golf at Ferris State University in Michigan, sank a par putt on No. 14 to win the match and finish 1-under-par. When the putt went in, a wave of emotion came over her in front of her friends and family watching. “In 2014, I didn’t know what it meant to be a Resorters champion,” Eldred said. “Playing out here for the last eight years and seeing how incredible this tournament is with its tradition, especially with it being the 100th year, is indescribable.” Eldred took an early two-hole lead with two pars and a birdie on the first three holes. Herzog got one back with a par on No. 4 before Eldred went 2-up with a par on No. 5. Herzog cut into the lead again on No. 7 with a par before Eldred won

Eldred went 4-up on No. 10 before finishing with a birdie on No. 12 and pars on Nos. 13 and 14. “When I chipped in for birdie on No. 12 after having an unlucky second shot was when I felt like I had it,” Eldred said. “I was 4-up at that point. That’s when I was like, ‘OK, it’s kind of in the cards for me today.’ I just had to hold on.” Eldred felt the nerves standing on the 14th tee box, knowing she needed to win one more hole to climb the mountaintop. “I never play No. 14 well,” Eldred said. “Was just trying to get through that tee shot and let the rest play out.” Herzog played some of the best golf out of anybody in the Women’s Division much of the week. After beating Alexandria’s Cora Larson 1-up in the quarterfinals, Herzog cruised by Lauren Contreras 7-6 in the semifinal round. “I’ve played Maddie many times,” Eldred said. “We played against each other about a month

I wanted to treat it like any other match out there.” When the dust settled, Eldred was showered in adulation by her family, friends and AGC members who came out to watch her play. “The members out here are incredible,” Eldred said. “I work out here, and I’ve been part of the staff for six years now. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the members very well. I was seeing them every other hole or so, and they kept saying, ‘Let’s go, Alayna. You can do it.’ To win in front of them and knowing they were all rooting for me this week is really special. It extends far beyond my family and friends that were here with me too.” In the years between championships, Eldred learned many lessons about the game and herself. Seeing how

Mark Lindberg wins Senior title in dramatic finish Back-to-back birdies carry former Men’s champ over Haugen late By Eric Morken and Al Edenloff Alexandria Echo Press Texas golfer Mark Lindberg was one of the top Men’s Division players at the Resorters in the early 2000s when he won championships in 2002 and 2003 around runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2004. Lindberg has consistently been a good player at the Resorters in multiple divisions over the years, but the 2021 tournament was the week where he put things all together through multiple rounds to win another title — this time in the Senior Division. Lindberg had perhaps the most dramatic championship of the day on Saturday as he erased a 1-hole deficit after 16 to beat Alexandria’s Chris Haugen, 1-up. Haugen is a twotime Senior Division champion himself after taking the 2017 and 2018 titles. He has also finished runner-up now twice after also taking second to Alexandria’s Steve Herzog in 2019. Lindberg said he’s played against Haugen four or five times in the Resorters and he’s won about half of them. He remembers the matches as being close and last year was no exception. “He’s a good player,” Linderbg said about Haugen, who came within a whisker of sending the match into extra holes when his birdie putt just missed on No. 18. Trailing by one hole after 16, Lindberg used a 9-iron on No. 17 and hit it to within a foot of the cup. “It was in kick-in range,” he said. His birdie won the hole, setting up a dramatic 18th. Lindberg hit a driver and a wedge to within two and a half feet of the hole. Haugen, meanwhile, was looking at a long birdie try, but his putt stopped just a couple of inches from the cup. Lindberg then made

Texas golfer Mark Lindberg watches his tee shot during his championship match in the Senior Division against Alexandria's Chris Haugen on Aug. 7, 2021. Lindberg had back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to win a dramatic title by a 1-up final after being down one after 16. the “tap in” birdie, although he said those two or three foot putts aren’t easy. “If you start missing them it’s just not your day,” Lindberg said. Lindberg had high praise for Haugen. “He’s a good player,” he said. “He plays solid and he hits the ball long.” Lindberg said his
wedges carried him to the win. “I hit my wedges great,” he said. “And my driver went well too. I was about 2-under.” Lindberg shot even par on the front nine and then 2-under on the back. Both guys finished with a flurry as Haugen matched that 2-under back nine after a 38 on the front. He had birdies
at Nos. 2, 10, 11 and 14, but Lindberg birdied 2, 11, 17 and 18 around an eagle win at the par-5 6th to help secure his win. Both Lindberg and Haugen are back in the 2022 Senior Division field. Email sports and outdoor editor Eric Morken at emorken@ echopress.com.

Will Hacker makes good on second shot at a Junior 10-12 title By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Will Hacker of Owatonna seemed to be on a mission all week at the 2021 Resorters Tournament in Alexandria, and he accomplished that mission on the final morning. Hacker, son of Alexandria native Chad Hacker, was the No. 1 seed in the Junior 10-12 Division after finishing second in the field in 2020. He rattled off 3-2, 1-up and 2-up wins to get to the finals last summer before beating sixth-seeded Graham Odland in a 5-3 match on Saturday to earn the title. The Junior 10-12 golfers play nine-hole matches, so getting off to a fast start is paramount. Hacker did that in the championship as he used three straight pars on Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to move to 3-up. He never wavered in the entire match as his only slight blemish came on hole 13 with a bogey. Hacker bounced right back with back-to-back pars on holes 14 and 15 that secured wins and put away the match with a few holes to spare. Hacker flashed a smile

Adding to his Resorters legacy Troy Johnson wins fourth straight Men’s Execs title By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press Troy Johnson of Maple Grove has been as consistent as a player gets at the Resorters Tournament over the last four years, and nothing changed during the 2021 tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club. Johnson won his fourth straight Men’s Executive championship last summer. For the second time during that run, the finals win came against four-time division champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud. Johnson beat Schomer in a 3-2 match in 2018. Last year, he won a 2-1 final after he had beaten Chad Bisson 3-2 earlier in the morning during the semifinals. Schomer won a 5-4 match over perennial contender Andy Petersen in the semis. “It means a lot,” Johnson said of his fourth straight title. “I started off a little shaky in the semifinals and found my game a little bit. I knew going into the finals against Daryl that it was going to be a tough match. He played great in the semifinals, so it felt good getting the job done because I knew he’d be a tough opponent.” Both Schomer and Johnson played well throughout their round as Johnson was 1-under par on the front and Schomer was even. It was all square going to the back before Johnson used birdie wins at 11 and 12 and a par win at 14 to go 3-up. Schomer still had a run in him. He parred Nos. 15 and 16 after Johnson opened the door a bit with a couple of missed putts that were testers, but ones he often makes. “It really wasn’t the putts. It was more my second shots,” Johnson said. “I didn’t execute the shots I really wanted to hit. I guess my mentality was, ‘Hey, I’m still winning. Make a couple good swings.’ Unfortunately, Daryl gave me a window on 17 there. I made a good swing and 2-putted for the par. That stuff hap-

Johnson stepped up and put it right over the front bunker onto the green. Schomer could not get up and down from the sand to force an 18th hole. Johnson, who plays amateur events across the country, has been there and done that so many times in big rounds. That’s why moments like last year’s finals when Schomer started to inch closer don’t seem to phase him.

That’s where I have an advantage over a lot of players. Especially in bigger matches, I try to just be light about it. Try to take the positive out of

Tom Ryan gets first title in rematch of 2020 Masters final By Eric Morken and Al Edenloff Alexandria Echo Press Tom Ryan knows all about running big tournaments through his role as the executive director and chief operating officer of the Minnesota Golf Association. He showed during the Resorters Tournament last summer that he’s pretty good at golfing in them too. Ryan was the 2020 runner-up to Dan Elton — a three-time Masters Division champion at the Resorters. Given another chance to face Elton in the Masters championship in 2021, Ryan won by a 3-2 score to win the title. Ryan won the first three holes, and he never trailed from there. He held a 4-up advantage at the turn after shooting a 1-under par 35 on the front nine.

Gruidl grinds out third Resorters title He wins Grand Masters with big par putt on 18 By Al Edenloff Alexandria Echo Press “I can’t make it from three feet on 16, and then, this.” That’s what Resorters Grand Masters champion Jerry Gruidl said after winning his match against Mike Golden on the 18th green last summer. Olsen ready for next step after third junior title By Jared Rubado Alexandria Echo Press Alexandria’s Bennett Olsen is used to playing on championship Saturday at the Resorters golf tournament. He had already done it four times at 15-years-old. After two years of going home empty-handed in the Junior 13-15 Division, Olsen made his last run count in a 4-2 win over Cottonwood’s C a r s o n Boe last summer. The win is his third Boe Resorters championship, with the first two coming in 2016 and 2017 in the Junior 10-12 Division. “This is my third, but it just feels different this year,” Olsen said after the 2021 Resorters. “The last two years I ran into Hannah (Boraas), which is never good. The people here made it special this year.” Olsen had a good approach all week but saved his best stuff for last. Boe went 1-up on No. 1 with a birdie before Olsen took control. He won the next six holes with three birdies and three pars. “The course was really firm all week,” Olsen said. “Usually, my putter is my weakness. My driver has been squirrely on me a few times, but this week comes down to making putts. That was my focus today.” Boe is no stranger to Resorters Saturdays either. In 2020, he fell in the championship to Boraas, 6-5. Boe won medalist honors in the qualifying round last year with a low score of 72. Olsen and his high school teammate, Carver Larson, tied for second at 74. “I used to play the same way as (Carson) before I grew a little bit and put some pounds on,” Olsen said. “He’s the kind of kid that’s going to hit the ball straight and not make a ton of mistakes. You have to take advantage of them when he does.”

“I’m ready for it .You see these crowds and these people out here. It’s just special. I’m ready to give Braeden a run for his money.” BENNETT OLSEN Boe crept into the match with a par on No. 9 and a birdie on No. 12. With the lead down to three, Olsen put his foot on the gas and sank a birdie putt on No. 14, which pinned Boe on his heels. Needing to win every one of the last four holes to force a playoff, Boe’s par kept the match alive for another hole. Olsen would make par on No. 16 in front of a crowd of friends and family for his third Resorters title. “It helped that I was three-under after eight (holes) because I was leaking oil,” Olsen said. “(Carson) is a good player, and he’s got another year to win this before moving up. He’s going to make another run at it next year.” Olsen’s championship match was rather anticlimactic compared to his semifinal bout. After a day off on Thursday, Olsen and Larson faced off for a chance to go to the final. For the second straight year, Olsen got the upper hand. “There was a lot of trash talk on the day off before the match,” Olsen said with a laugh. “There was a lot of commotion, to say the least. That match was just a grind too. I was two down going into No.
11. Then I made a couple of birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. I missed a three-footer on No. 17. I just kept telling myself I had to come back on No. 18.” With the match squared going to the final hole, Olsen made a par putt to beat Larson again, giving him the upper hand in the friendly rivalry for another year. “That’s a two-peat on him now,” Olsen said. “I beat him last year, so he’s 0-for-life against me now.” Olsen will move up to the Men’s Championship Division this summer. He joked about taking down another teammate in 2022 — Men’s Championship Division title winner Braeden Sladek. “I’m ready for it,” Olsen said. “You see these crowds and these people out here. It’s just special. I’m ready to give Braeden a run for his money.” Sladek and Olsen are part of more than 80 golfers set to compete in that Men’s Championship Division this summer. Boe is back in the Junior 13-15 Division looking to get over the hump this year and grab his first Resorters title.

Haugens win largest Lakes to Links field ever at AGC By Eric Morken Alexandria Echo Press ALEXANDRIA — The Haugen family has a long history at the Alexandria Golf Club, and the family can now add a Lakes to Links Member/Guest Tournament title to their name. Chris Haugen, the 2017 and 2018 Senior Division champion at the Resorters match-play tournament, and his son, Cole, took AGC’s member/ guest tournament title on July 9 to wrap up three days of play in the event. “We lost our first match (during pool play) and played a lot better in the remainder of the matches, but Cole really caught fire on Saturday,” Chris said. “The last round, we were going head-to-head with (Derek) Swedberg’s team that we needed to beat in the final round. Cole played really well, and then he played really well in the shootout. We were lucky to get the win.” AGC’s member/guest starts with the two-per-
son teams placed into pools with similar players based on the two combined handicaps. They go head-to-head in matches against other teams in their pool to determine which teams make a final shootout on Saturday afternoon. This year, 14 flight winners and three wildcard teams advanced to a shootout. Once in the shootout, teams are given a stroke against certain opponents based on handicaps to make it an even field where any team that makes the shootout has a chance to win. Teams are eliminated hole by hole before the finalists are left standing. This year’s event had a record number of teams for the tournament at 84. Chris and Cole Haugen held off AGC member Ray Martin and his guest, Perrin Rome, on the ninth hole. “That’s what made it more fun for us,” Chris said. “On the ninth hole against good fam-
ily friends of ours, Ray Martin and Perrin Rome. Battling it out with them on the final hole made it more sweet.” Stephen Davidson and Robbie Frits were eliminated on hole 8 of the shootout, and Brian Salzer and Patrick Cattoor were also part of the last four teams after getting eliminated on hole seven. The shootout runs as an alternate-shot format between the two team members. The Haugens made par on the ninth hole to earn the win. Cole set things up with a good tee shot before Chris put his approach shot onto the green. “The other team hit it over the green and didn’t get it up and down,” Chris said. “They had a putt for five, and Cole put a putt up there to where I couldn’t miss it a few inches from the hole. That was the end of it.” Cole, a former standout for the Cardinals who graduated in 2015 from Alexandria, now lives in the Twin Cities area.

Many former Alexandria golfers make up the championship division, and former champions like Jacques Wilson (2014), Jim Lehman (2009) and Rose (1979, 1983, 2000) are on the entry list around many others who have come close but are still searching for their first Men’s Championship Division title. “We’ve got a lot of really good college players coming back again,” Rose said. “It seems like every year we’re getting more and more really good young players. It’s kind of a trend in golf. You look at the PGA Tour, there’s a lot more younger players under
some lucky breaks. To do it with my son and have everybody watching and experience that with him is something I’ll never forget.” Email sports and outdoor editor Eric Morken at emorken@ echopress.com.
30 that are performing really well. We’re seeing the same thing here with Sladek last year winning at 16 years old. We’ve got a whole plethora of young college kids coming this year to play in the event.” Rose said the Women’s Division is probably the best in terms of depth of talent that the field has had in years. Osakis native Alayna Eldred is the returning champion there after also winning the women’s title at just 14 years old in 2014. Ale Heinen (2020 champion) of Wichita, Kansas, and Leah Herzog (2019 champion) of Red Wing are in this year’s field, along with last year’s runner-up, Madison Herzog of Detroit Lakes. Story lines exist across all 10 divisions as many top amateur golfers return to Alexandria for the 101st playing of the Resorters. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s so different from when I grew up playing golf,” Rose said. “All these young guys hit it nine miles. They teach them how to generate speed now at a young age. You couldn’t really do that when I was growing up with the ball and the club that we played. It’s fun to watch what’s going on, and we got a lot of talent coming back this year.”
